DEER SHED FESTIVAL 3 I thought this would be an easy bit of the programme to write but this is at least the tenth attempt, think I“ve nailed it now though.

Here goes.

Fun, that“s why you“re here. You“ve all come here to have fun from the youngest to the oldest. There are lots of things at festivals that aren“t fun and as always we hope we“ve addressed these issues.

So now you“ll have no excuse. Go forth and cut loose.

MAIN STAGE 7.35pm-8.25pm Home for Cashier No.9 is Belfast, though listening to their music you would never have guessed it. They could be from California, or Manchester, or any number of places, having been variously compared with The Byrds, Beach Boys, Stone Roses, Pavement, CSN, The Flaming Lips and many others.

Yet with their rich vocal harmonies, bold guitar textures and supremely catchy melodies, they’ve created a sound that’s indeterminably none of these yet equally vibrant.

Cashier No. 9’s debut, To The Death Of Fun, is produced by acclaimed DJ, film and music producer David Holmes. Combined with the mature, wryly humorous song-writing of frontman Danny Todd, the result is eclectic, layered, guitar-jangling country-laced pop.

SAINT ETIENNE MAIN STAGE 9.40pm-11pm It was twenty-one years ago, when a pop phenomenon emerged in the guise of Saint Etienne. Bob Stanley, Pete Wiggs and the honeyed vocals of Sarah Cracknell gave us those joyous pop classics - Nothing Can Stop Us, and the hugely infectious, He’s On The Phone. They may remind us of a time when life was less complicated, but no need to get nostalgic; Saint Etienne are back this year to remind us about what matters. That the magic of the charts, of Top Of The Pops, was - and still is - about reality, as well as fantasy. That pop can take everyday lives and make each moment sing.

2011 saw Saint Etienne venture back into the studio together and record Words and Music, their ninth studio album. They collaborated with Ian Catt, KLF & Sugababes producer Nick Coler, Girls Aloud lynchpin Tim Powell, and Richard X. They took the spirits of high disco, metallic house, Brill Building pop. They took the preset rhythm, the sampler, the fireside warmth of a string quartet, the strange and important sound of the synthesiser and created a set of songs that tells us this: pop never ends.

MOODY GOWNS IN THE DOCK STAGE 5.30pm-6.00pm Leeds-based Moody Gowns are an abrasive bunch of art-poppers. They’re quirky, hard to get your head around at first, but listen to their songs and you’re soon enjoying looking at life the Moody Gown way.

Their songs are typically topical. Whether it’s about the bane of the bus driver and his refusal to smile (Misery Guts) or the struggle and strife of being the powerless newcomer in a tight knit household (Stepmother), Moody Gowns are a band with something worth saying.

If there was going to be a band that nudged you out of your comfort zone this weekend, then Janice Graham Band is probably going to be it.

A clever set of Manchester lads putting intelligent, insightful - more than occasionally hard hitting -words to guitar-based reggae in the tranquil surrounds of North Yorkshire parkland… who’d have thought?

Described quite brilliantly as “the mutant offspring of The Specials and The Happy Mondays”, they have a reputation for creating a unique carnival atmosphere during frenzied live shows.

People are left open mouthed, literally - they can’t believe what they’re seeing and hearing from these young lads. Grab a stiff drink and get yourself down to this one.

Whilst being one of around five bands on earth that can actually claim they sound like no one else, comparisons and relations can be drawn to the likes of: The Divine Comedy, Ian Dury and The Blockheads, Stanley Holloway, Talking Heads, Eels, The Fall and Mr Bungle.

Leaving the Brit-pop laddish stereotypes of former Manc groups behind, Dutch Uncles offer up a rich and sophisticated version of their forefathers. Pulling unlikely influences from Steve Reich, XTC and Talking Heads, the band have an unconventional approach to songwriting with

As a result of this heady mix of old and new, you get to experience jaw-dropping musicianship, whip-smart hooks and strangely danceable beats, and that’s before you’ve got to the flamboyant stage presence of lead singer Duncan Wallis. All of this makes Dutch Uncles one of the most interesting pop dichotomies in a very long time. Enjoy.

THE GLENDALE FAMILY LAKE STAGE 6.40pm-7.30pm The Glendale Family is a collective of musicians based in the North West, with members ranging from Scotland to Australia and a number of places in between. They can most aptly be described as a modern folk band, influenced by sea shanties, heroic figures, tall tales and the natural world. They are the purveyors of good vibes, which radiate out in abundance to the audience; you’ll leave feeling like you’ve been hugged for fifty minutes. They are back at the Deer Shed for the third year, which speaks volumes. Lovely people, lovely music.

ARTHUR RIGBY & THE BASKERVYLLES LAKE STAGE 5.30pm-6.00pm TUPELO

Arthur Rigby & the Baskervylles is an 8-piece orchestral pop band, based in Leeds. The sound the band creates is a beautiful mixing pot of lush orchestrations, poetic lyrics, romantic melodies and powerful energy.

The music is the invention of front man and guitarist Benjamin, scoring songs for violins, piano, bass, trumpet, trombone, saxophone and flute. With his vocal talents sounding remarkably like Neil Hannon, this band make for an interesting listen.

THE GLENDALE FAMILY

TUPELO LAKE STAGE 8.30pm-9.30pm Being one of the hardest working bands in Ireland means Tupelo’s live shows are something special to look forward to. They are five young men who take the essence of deep south, dixiestyle, fiddle-led acoustic and combine it with gutsy Irish-folk. Their music is a flurry of roots, rockabilly, bluegrass, country, folk and rock ‘n’ roll… often displayed all in the same song.

Tupelo owes its name to Van Morrison’s Tupelo Honey album, a favourite of frontman and songwriter, James Cramer. Morrison is also a massive influence on his songwriting, leaving even the most musical killjoy unable to prevent unconscious toe-tapping, head nodding and general all round enjoyment of Tupelo, even when Cramer sings about heartache and sadness.

FRIDAY MUSIC

Friday night on the Deer Shed Stage will be curated by Leeds filmmakers, Anthologies; a voluntary, not-for-profit, project. They work with musicians, promoters, venue owners and other individuals to capture unique performances by musicians with artistic integrity.

They will be filming the artists on stage as well as capturing them on film during private performances around the festival site. The end result will be a collection of unique and intimate films that show aspects of the artist, their performances and the festival that you won“t get to see anywhere else. GRANT K FENNELL DEER SHED STAGE 6.30pm-7.30pm Twenty-one year old acoustic-folk artist Grant K Fennell is fresh out of University and ready to take on the music world full time. After moving North from Essex he has certainly made his mark on the Leeds music scene over the past 3 years, releasing his EP ‘Cold Home & The Family Bones’ (aired on BBC6 Music) and supporting acts such as Sea of Bees, Cherry Ghost and Daniel Martin Moore.

Some of his biggest influences include Iron and Wine, Kate Bush and Van Morrison, resulting in his own utterly original approach to songwriting, often described as being beyond his years.

MONUMENT VALLEY DEER SHED STAGE 7.30pm-8.30pm Formed whilst living aboard in Madrid, Monument Valley is the musical creation of London-born and raised songwriter Ned Younger.

The first release (No Air EP) introduced an exceptionally talented singer/songwriter to the world, one with both huge originality and a lyrical talent to clearly mark him out from the crowd. His latest EP is a collection of songs based around found photographs – however, it’s in the whites-of-eyes live arena where his poetic verses set to music really come into their own.

SAM AIREY DEER SHED STAGE 9.30pm-10.30pm Being compared to Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen could be quite a burden, but not to young gun Sam Airey. He resides in Leeds, but hails from Wales, so is in the fortunate position of being the product of quite possibly the two most grounded places on earth.

RM HUBBERT DEER SHED STAGE 8.30pm-9.30pm RM Hubbert is a fantastically gifted guitarist from Glasgow. He writes music about love, death, friendship, mental illness and occasionally a dog called D Bone. His music is not as depressing as the previous sentence suggests; however, it is thoughtful, melancholic, enchanting, but most

of all beautiful. You will be hypnotised by this man’s phenomenal melodies and left pondering on how on earth one man can extract so much emotion out of one guitar.

Raised on various types of folk and country music, Sam blends these influences with the sounds and experiences he has encountered along the way. Being the clever chap he is, he plays a lot of the instruments himself. His most recent work sees an exciting departure away from the more conventional folk stylings, exploring uncharted territory in terms of instrumentation and production. Sam is definitely on the ‘one to watch’ list. In the past eighteen months he’s supported both The Villagers and Willy Mason on tour, recorded a Maida Vale session for Radio 1, as well as beating The Manic Street Preachers to BBC Radio Wales’ Song Of The Year!

Scottish band, Washington Irving, may well seduce you with their lilting accents, but are most likely to blow you away with their powerful blend of raucous folk pop. Skillfully mixing sounds reminiscent of The Arcade Fire, The Waterboys and The Pogues, these boys will raise you to the roof, have you dancing your socks off… but beware, so emotive are their melodies and lyrics (sung in that accent), they can have you in a big wet heap on the floor in the space of a song. Thankfully, normal service is resumed quite quickly and your socks will be once again departing from your feet in no time.

TREE TOP FLYERS MAIN STAGE 1.55pm-2.40pm Winners of last year’s Glastonbury ‘Emerging Talent Competition’, Tree Top Flyers aren’t hanging around. All five of the rock-revved, sepia-toned soul’n’roll sound they are today, have cut their teeth in other bands, and that wealth of experience (from both sides of the Atlantic) has meant they’ve got a head start on the making music front.

Flyers lead singer Reid Morrison describes their sound as “’Pure Country Soul’…We’re not fullon country or Southern rock or soul. We have this cauldron, and we put all those influences in.”. Influences that evoke the sounds of such heavyweights as Van Morrison, Neil Young and Crosby, Stills & Nash. It’s a heady mix, but one that works exceptionally well with beer and afternoon sunshine, so charge your glass, pray for sun and watch these guys fly.

To describe The Staves’ music as merely comforting or enjoyable would be to severely under-egg the pudding. Their songwriting is as striking as it is exquisite, a melding of still, bright English folk and sublime West Coast pop that, performed live, is capable of plunging an audience into awed silence.

THE STAVES MAIN STAGE 3.40pm-4.25pm The musical evolution of The Staves - Emily, Jessica and Camilla - has been a slow, steady process; an adventure that began in the stew of family car journeys, sing-alongs and squabbles over the stereo, and immersed in the music of artists like Feist, Fleet Foxes, Simon & Garfunkel, Buffalo Springfield, and Motown.Influenced by their Welsh mother, who had communal singing in her blood, the sisters’ vocal arrangements are indeed something that marks out The Staves - a mingling of dusky sweetness and high, beaming radiance.

Beth Jeans Houghton is one of the most selfassured new artists of the year, a pop polymath who skillfully blends psychedelia, glam rock and chain gang folk into fantastic ear-catching songs. It’s quite unlike anything else you’re likely to hear in 2012, and nor will you see anything else quite like her, as her stage outfits are equally unique.

Houghton’s home town is Newcastle-upon-Tyne, a far cry from her new base in LA, where she and The Hooves released their debut album earlier this year, produced by Ben Hillier (Blur, Depeche Mode, Elbow).

Like some sort of musical and sartorial Heston Blumental, she combines ingredients that by rights shouldn’t be together, but the results are quite astounding… glamorous, stylish, sophisticated and wholly unconventional. This lady has got it all going on.

Expect an incendiary live show with big beats, hook laiden tunes, spanning clumsy teenager years to inevitable heart-breaks.

Los Campesinos! is an indie-pop band who met at Cardiff university in 2006. Their name roughly translates as ‘the peasants’ in Spanish; and so into their band name is this bunch, that they all refer to their surnames as Campesinos! e.g. guitarist, Neil Campesinos! Crazy lot.

Hello Sadness is their fourth and most recent record, and if 2009’s Romance Is Boring marked a giant step on from their genesis – seven kids and a glockenspiel, ricocheting off the four walls of a Cardiff rehearsal room – their latest stuff, constitutes another step, and a turn of the corner.

“It feels like we’ve done all our growing up while in this band,” says vocalist Gareth Campesinos! (we did warn you) “Not like we’re Hanson, or anything. But we’ve been Los Campesinos! since finishing university, and in that time we’ve all LOS CAMPESINOS!

VILLAGERS

VILLAGERS MAIN STAGE 9.40pm-10.55pm Main Stage headliner, Villagers, released their debut album, Becoming A Jackal, just two short years ago on Domino Records - a Mercury Prize nomination and a Mojo Honours Best Breakthrough Artist nomination swiftly followed.

Things continued apace for Villagers creator, Conor J. O’Brien. The album continued to create much excitement in musical quarters and receive overwhelming critical acclaim, culminating in an Ivor Novello for the title track in 2011.

It’s an understatement to say that a follow up album is greatly anticipated. Which is why Deer Shed is excited to be one of the few places where some of the new material can be heard this summer. Peppering their very latest work, we can still expect to hear those debut stand outs, like Becoming a Jackal, Home and The Pact.

O’Brien’s live performance has the same intensity as his songs. His enigmatic presence draws the audience in, ensuring your undivided attention for the entire set. His engaging manner doesn’t only have a hold over the audience, quite often it seems that the rest of the band are under his powerful spell, so precisely executed are the dark tales and moving melodies of this musical genius.

This year has seen the band release their second album (their second in two years, these guys don’t muck about), gain record of the week status on Radio 2 and embark on their first US tour, including a showcase at South by SouthWest. We’re glad we caught these guys now. You’re in for a foot stomping good time!

AKϟDK IN THE DOCK STAGE 11.30am-12.10pm AK/DK are Graham Sowerby (drums and synths) and Ed Chivers (drums and synths). Their shows include improvisations; ranging from the chaotic to the beautiful. Their mix of abstract electronics and raucous energy has already earned them support slots with artists as diverse as Fujiya & Miyagi and Three Trapped Tigers.

The simplicity of the line-up allows them the freedom to create improvised layers of fuzzed-up synths, delays and arpeggios, and thunderous double drums.

LAKI MERA IN THE DOCK STAGE 2.45pm-3.30pm Laki Mera are a four-piece electronica band, from Glasgow. They blend guitars and synths to create a magical mix of folktronica and ambient trip hop that conjures up memories of Portishead and Massive Attack. Laura Donnelly’s voice coasts sweetly over the top of these sounds as the icing on the cake. She makes a captivating focal point of the band with a charming, Bjorkish vulnerability that makes for a tantalizing performance.

LAKI MERA

Expect to be moved (in all directions) between Punk and Dance with the occasional beautiful melodic section…just to keep you on your toes.

WOODEN BOX

PAUL THOMAS SAUNDERS IN THE DOCK STAGE 4.30pm-5.15pm Paul Thomas Saunders returns to Deer Shed Festival after his first performance here in 2010.

Full of promise and raw talent then, he doesn’t disappoint now.

WOODEN BOX IN THE DOCK STAGE 1.05pm-1.50pm A six-piece of pan-Scottish provenance, Woodenbox’s thrilling folk-blues with a Mariachi twist, has seen them garner a reputation as one of the country’s most compelling live acts, captivating audiences from Brighton to Berlin.

FIELD MUSIC IN THE DOCK STAGE 6.20pm-7.10pm Field Music - aka Sunderland brothers, David and Peter Brewis - formed in 2004 and have racked up four albums since their conception.

Their latest being Plumb which was released earlier this year.

Read any review or write up of these guys and descriptions like ‘art-rock’, ‘progressive’, ‘highbrow’ and ‘anti-fashion stance’ get thrown at you; stuff that can frighten the heebie-jeebies out of your average music lover. They are essentially clever people making clever music, and there’s nowt wrong with that. The sounds are complex but well crafted and easy on the ear. They have elements of all those labels, but fundamentally they are a delight to listen to and a real stand out band.

If any further endorsement were needed, these guys were personally chosen by Belle and Sebastian to perform at their acclaimed Bowlie Weekender festival.

SATURDAY MUSIC

This Leeds-based singer-songwriter laces his songs with power and emotion, making them nothing short of spellbinding. That wonder is sublimely recreated when performing live with his band, The Fever Dreams. This young man can silence the rowdiest of crowds, so make sure you’re amongst them.

SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS IN THE DOCK STAGE 8.30pm-9.30pm School of Seven Bells (SVIIB to those in the know) are a cool duo from New York City, consisting of Benjamin Curtis and Alejandra Deheza, and are named after a mythical South American pickpocket training academy.

The pair met whilst on tour with their respective bands (Secret Machines and on!air!library!) back in 2007. Their debut album garnered much attention for the band’s eclectic mix of introspective rock and poppy electronic tunes.

Three albums in, the duo has evolved into a slick creative team. They have an unorthodox songwriting process that begins with lyrics, which are then supplemented by the music.

Curtis has said this is the most important part of the band with “everything else [being] accompaniment”.

FIELD MUSIC

As a result it’s hard to put your finger on exactly what makes up the SVIIB sound. It has been described as dreamy and ethereal, and the lyrics as abstract. Though singer, Deheza, apparently insists that their music is neither… answers on a tweet please...

PIP MOUNTJOY LAKE STAGE 11.30am-12.10pm It’s great to have budding talent on your doorstep, and there’s none more budding than 17-year-old Pip Mountjoy from up the road in Richmond. In the summer of 2011 Pip was invited to record a live session for the BBC Introducing programme. This was swiftly followed by an invitation to the BBC Introducing Masterclass at Abbey Road where she performed and generally schmoozed with the music glitterati of BBC Radio 2 and 6.

Pip continues to hone her talents by supporting a range of artists, including Idlewild’s Roddy Woomble, Beth Jeans Houghton, Slow Club and Greg Holden. Her songs are honest and fresh and sung with that husky clarity you hear in Beth Orton.

LAKE STAGE 2.45pm-3.30pm Pale Seas are a Southampton five piece with the ability to craft stunningly beautiful songs. Their tunes are tinged with Americana folk yet jarred with English self-depreciation. If there were to be a hallowed union of Beach House and Galaxy 500, then Pale Seas would surely be that lovechild.

They cite Serge Gainsbourg, Velvet Underground and Jeff Buckley as influences, all of who can be heard in the mix. However, Pale Seas’ intimate and hypnotic sound is theirs alone and it will send you off to a tranquil, calm place that you’ll be reluctant to leave.

THE LOST BROTHERS

Gary Stewart is a Scottish singer/songwriter who has carved out a strong fan-base in his adopted home of Leeds. Gary’s strength is the energy of his live shows; his performances are filled with songs and stories of love, paranoia and prostitution, and he always delivers them with honesty, passion and a good measure of Celtic Flair.

THE LOST BROTHERS GARY STEWART

LAKE STAGE 4.30pm-5.15pm The Lost Brothers are two Irish lads, Oisin Leech and Mark Mccausland. They’ve been described as a ‘ragged Everly Brothers’, which seems just about right. Gorgeous harmonies, melodies that make you smile, but without the sugary sweetness that that sixties sound can evoke.

ELLEN AND THE ESCAPADES LAKE STAGE 8.30pm-9.30pm The past two years have been an exhilarating journey for Leeds-based quintet Ellen and the Escapades. Blending elements of folk, pop and rock, the band’s distinctive and unabashedly appealing sound seems to have everyone talking.

After winning 2010’s Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition and playing BBC Introducing stages at both Reading and Leeds Festivals, the band have gone from strength to strength.

Ellen’s dusky, enchanting vocals and strikingly well-crafted songs have already captured the attention of BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music, and having fans such as Lauren Laverne and Steve Lamacq hasn’t hurt either. Supporting the likes of Josh T. Pearson, First Aid Kit and Paolo Nutini has brought the band’s music to even bigger audiences all over the country. Deershed are delighted to have them headlining the new lake stage, a perfect setting for this band.

RACHEL SERMANNI LAKE STAGE 6.20pm-7.10pm Nineteen-year-old Scottish singer-songwriter Rachel Sermanni packs an almighty punch with her earthy folk melodies and dextrous fingerpicking. She also has a voice that will blow you away.

Based in Glasgow her tunes have a hint of the alternative and contemporary, but their essence lies in her Highland upbringing where traditional folk is the mainstay.

This young lady is already creating quite a buzz, and not letting age or inexperience stand in her way. She has a confidence on stage that many of her elders would relish. Her razor-sharp wit and natural affinity with audiences have led to support slots with the likes of Elvis Costello, Ron Sexsmith and Michael Kiwanuka – a definite ‘one to watch’.

Her songs are passionate and poignant and are delivered with such conversational ease, it often seems as if she is reading from an intimate letter or a book, set to music. Her straightforward lyrical style, sharp ear for wordplay and crisp, lilting vocals offer listeners a front-row seat to her stories, as they take shape above the understated music.

Beginning as a solo university project, Boat To Row has evolved into a confident band, delivering intelligent, intricate folk.

Recently sharing stages with Willy Mason and John Flynn, they are fast gaining a reputation for delivering an infectious, uplifting set.

BECCY OWEN DEER SHED STAGE 8.30pm-9.30pm Beccy Owen is a formidable and openhearted talent, arming herself with an arsenal of eccentric, literate and heartfelt pop songs.

Beccy is an all round good egg who, as well as performing herself, is involved in many local music projects and educational programmes. You can capture some of Beccy’s magic for yourself at her singing workshops at the festival, or if you don’t fancy giving your lungs a work out, just sit back and enjoy her as is.

The Parisian trio were born in 2008, after a new year’s resolution that, for once, actually stuck. Brought together by a shared fondness for all kinds of pop music and nursery rhymes, they tell stories of small trees growing too fast, of yodelling yaks and children flying south for the winter: stories of adolescence, of things lost, then found – then lost again.

There’s a gorgeously naïve freshness to their toylike instruments, and their mellow-yet-uplifting choruses will inevitably get caught in your brain – just throw in some live sampling, a lot of percussions and a dash of electro, and you’ll find your hands and feet joining in too.

Rae Morris is an 18-year-old singer-songwriter from Blackpool and is the epitome of raw talent.

Learning piano at an early age and forever underestimating her ability, Rae recently found a voice she didn’t know she had, and what an incredible voice it is.

Rae cleverly matches that hard-to-define voice to songs of new experiences and challenges, like love and not always being able to have the answers. She has an understated strength to her and is yet another Deer Shed Festival young performer with a ‘one to watch’ label on her… well worth a listen.

MAIN STAGE 1.25pm-2.15pm Introducing former Arab Strap guitarist Malcolm Middleton with his self-titled debut album, Human Don’t Be Angry. Named in honour of the German version of board game Frustration (“Mensch ärgere Dich nicht”).Middleton

describes the creation of Human Don’t Be Angry as “a facade, a front so I can have fun again musically”.

This alter ego allows him to explore somewhere new creatively, departing somewhat from his previous ‘serious’ songwriting and allowing him to concentrate on an all round more breezy affair, that sometimes has lyrics, but...hey, sometimes doesn’t. It’s a laid-back sound that helps showcase Middleton’s often under-rated skill as a guitarist. Essentially, a great listen.

CHERRY GHOST MAIN STAGE 2.45pm-4.00pm We’re privileged to be having the phenomenal talent, which is Cherry Ghost, closing our festival for 2012. From the same Manchester barn as Elbow, Doves and I Am Kloot, Cherry Ghost have left nothing but a trail of critical acclaim since starting out, just seven years ago, as the solo enterprise of Simon Aldred. Before even releasing any material, the buzz around their music was so great they were invited onto Jools Holland, something few bands can claim.

Then, after releasing the first album in 2007, the next accolade was an Ivor Novello award for Best Contemporary Song.

Cherry Ghost have been a fully-fledged six-piece band, for a few years now and that collaborative relationship means a more rounded and developed sound. Described as country/ folk-tinged rock, their songs are more like stories to music and often have a brooding darkness pervading through them that is nothing short of captivating.

The late night performers at the bar are second to none, and our good friends The Glendale Family curate both evenings. A fair few you“ll spot on the big stages earlier in the day coming back to do a special after hours, kickingback-with-your-pint-after-kids-are-down sort of set; others, can only be seen during the darker hours. So, organise a willing (and able) member of your group to be babysitter for one night and get yourself some festie time sans the kiddiewinks.

– STARTS 11PM Alx Green played guitar in rock bands until a couple of years ago, when he decided he could hide his love of acoustic/folky sounds no more.

In 2010 he began playing acoustic covers at open mic nights and since then has not looked back. He’s now writing and recording his own material to growing acclaim.

Arthur Rigby And The Baskervylles is an 8-piece orchestral pop band, based in Leeds.

The sound the band creates is a beautiful mixing pot of lush orchestrations, poetic lyrics, romantic melodies and powerful energy, all sung with a tinge of Neil Hannon. After playing their socks off at the Lake Stage earlier, they’ll be ready to help you kick back and lounge.

Al Shields is an Edinburgh-based songwriter, with influences rooted in old-time country, folk and blues music. He released his debut album ‘Slow Burner’ in October 2011.

The Mark Henderson Band is a trio from Chester. When asked to describe their style of music, band member, Thor, replied ‘we play some kind of country-folk blues’. So there you have it…

ZOMBIE TENT, FRIDAY 4pm-7pm To those not in the know about what a freedom boot is, it’s the finest homemade percussion instrument in the world, involving a big boot, a broomstick and beer bottle tops.

Seeing is believing, so come and help our master craftswoman create the festival’s own freedom boot and whilst you’re there make a percussion instrument of your own to take and shake your way through the weekend.

Illustrator friend of the Deer Shed Matt Pattinson returns again this year to run the four towering expanses that are our doodle walls. Matt will of course be adding to the wall himself with his own distinctive take on our Monsters theme

Terry, our resident huge monster maker, has constructed a sea beast that could scare the scales off Nessy. Unfortunately, he hasn’t had time to dress our monster of the lake, so is going to need many hands to make her decent before she’s floated onto her watery home. We’ve got three thousand green file dividers waiting to be turned into sea monster scales, and it would make Terry’s day to see her all finished!

BELLY DANCING DEER SHED STAGE, SATURDAY 2pm-3pm, BIG TOP, SUNDAY 4pm-5pm The name “Belly Dancing” is something of a misnomer as every part of the body is involved in the dance, especially the hips! Come and learn how to get your hips to do things you never thought they could and learn a traditional Middle Eastern dance whilst you’re at it, with professional Belly Dance teacher, Charlotte Blackburn.

DRUMMING WORKSHOPS BIG TOP STAGE, SATURDAY 9.30am-10.30am, 5pm-6pm You may have seen a number of blue plastic containers strategically placed around the site, you may have wondered what they were for.

Other than stacking, den-making and sitting on, they are also for drumming.

Drumming teacher, Kevin Shaw, will be enslaving you to the rhythm as he shows how to get the best beat out of blue plastic.

TEESSIDE UNIVERSITY’S COMPUTER ART TENT, SATURDAY 10am-4pm, SUNDAY 10am-2pm Teesside University has an international reputation for courses in animation, games and computer graphics. The calibre of its graduates is so high, that many have gone on to work for the likes of Pixar. Lecturers and students will be on site giving workshops, demonstrations and basically creating cool stuff from scratch.

This is the sort of animation that Aardman produce. It takes years to make a feature length film, but our friends from Teesside Uni will be producing a short from inception to completion across the weekend, with plenty of opportunity for budding filmmakers to get stuck in and have a go.

Green Screen Video Production Never trust TV again, once you’ve sampled just where you can end up thanks to the clever green screen that the Teesside crew will be setting up.

See you and your friends and family in all kinds of places you’d never imagine yourself in. Once they’ve been filmed we’ll try and host all the videos online afterwards, for you to enjoy again and again.

3D Modelling If you thought Photoshop was difficult to master try adding an extra dimension. The Teesside techies will be creating amazing 3D models on their super whizzy computers.

In a series of experiments you will help the Doctor learn anything from where your intestines go to how the nervous system works. No (major) surgery is required for these positions!

DUNCAN KENDRICK“S BUSHCRAFT DEER SHED STAGE, SUNDAY 10am-11am, 12noon-1pm, 2pm-3pm Come and get some Ray Mear’s style lessons in how to survive in the wild. Duncan has over 15 years experience teaching Outdoor Education in a range of environments both nationally and on International Expeditions. Over the past several years he has specialised in Bushcraft, happiest in his canoe exploring woodlands around lakes and rivers.

Duncan is running 3 sessions this weekend: Fundamental Fire Lighting methods: using a range of techniques to light fires; Fire by Friction: have a go at using a Bow Drill to get your fire started; and Natural Cordage Making: ever wondered how often you need string when surviving in the wild?

No ball of string handy, then make your own – Duncan will show you how!

SPORTS & PLAY Our sports field, which sits amongst the campsite, will be available for use throughout the festival. It will be littered with interesting things to build, throw, catch, hide behind and hula hoop. We ask you to supervise your children when using this facility and be respectful of others and the equipment that“s been provided for everyone“s fun.

Find out what they did and how they did it, in this rather icky show exploring the workings of the human body. Be warned, it might put you off your festival picnic!

TENNIS ON A STRING After soon realising we had an entire festival of swingball champions last year, which resulted in operational malfunctions on a major scale, we have designed our own to withstand abnormally high levels of whacking and smacking. Our bespoke sets have been fabricated out of heavyduty steel and our custom-made tennis balls really set it of. Do your worst, we dare you!

The silver screen becomes the focus, and monsters feature quite heavily in our celluloid selection for all ages, which includes screenings, but also discussion about film and a chance to see some of the techniques used to make them. would have when it was first released, with an atmospheric and sometimes spooky-sounding piano accompaniment.

MONSTERS INC. (U) IN THE DOCK STAGE, SUNDAY 9am-10.30am A much-loved film, and now practically a Pixar classic. Monsters generate their city’s power by scaring children, but they themselves are really afraid of being contaminated by children. One enters Monstropolis, leaving top scarer, Sulley and his friend, Mike, to sort it out. Possibly the best casting for animated voices as John Goodman and Billy Crystal take the lead roles.

LAST SHOP STANDING Preview and Talk by Graham Jones

IN THE DOCK STAGE, SUNDAY 3pm-4pm Graham Jones author of Last Shop Standing, documents the demise of the independent record shop in light of the music industry going into crisis as markets and listening trends have changed beyond recognition.

Based on his book, a film documentary is due to be released this September and the Deer Shed is pleased to be screening a 20-minute exclusive preview the film, with the author present. After the preview, Graham will talk more about his experiences of working with independent record shops, his hopes and fears for the future of music retail and a few amusing anecdotes along the way.

THIRSK TRAIN STATION SHUTTLE BUS The shuttle bus costs £4 one way. The shuttle bus stop is the main entrance gate 1. The bus will have our logo displayed in the window.

Please use the bins provided around the site for your rubbish. All the rubbish is sorted and recycled by our waste management company and zero percent will end up in landfill. Bin bags are available from the Campsite wardens or Information.

MERCHANDISE Deer Shed Festival has a wide selection of branded tshirts, hoodies, glow sticks, snuggly blankets, wristbands, badges and loads of other goodies. All are great quality and something to suit all budgets. We are also selling kids ear defenders. The merchandise tent is next to the Main Bar in the arena.

CRIME Whilst we have had extremely low levels of crime at Deer Shed in the past please do not encourage criminals. Please look after your valuables at all times. Don’t leave anything of value unattended in your tent.

If you are a victim of crime please report it immediately to a member of security. We will take it extremely seriously. Similarly if you see anyone acting suspiciously please report it to a security staff member. Only in an extreme emergency should you call 999.

There are fire points on all stages and arena tents. Additionally fire points are located and clearly marked throughout the campsite.

Please contact a member of staff or security immediately if you discover a fire in progress.

WATER Drinking water is available in the campsite as well as in the arena at the bars.

TOILETS We have a variety of toilet types on site.

Standard portaloos are situated in the campsite with larger disabled units containing baby changing facilities. Within the arena are our own very popular composting eco-loos and gents straw urinals.

SHOWERS We are trialing showers for the first time this year. They are situated in the campsite next to the lake and campervan field. They are open during the following hours and cost £5 for 10 minutes.

FIRST AID AND MEDICAL ASSISTANCE If you are in need of first aid or medical assistance please make your way to the medics tent adjacent to the arena entrance open 24 hours. There are frequent medical patrols over the whole site during daylight hours. If you need a medic urgently and are unable to relocate please contact any member of staff who will contact the medical team.

CHILDREN Whilst we want to encourage your child’s enjoyment of the festival please remember that all workshops and performances are for the family and children should not be left unaccompanied. Please do not treat them as free childcare.

On arrival please ensure that you familiarise your children with the site layout and the location of Welfare. Lost and unaccompanied children will be taken to Welfare and in the event of being lost they should contact a member of security or a Deer Shed volunteer for help. James Alfred Wight, who wrote under the pseudonym of James Herriot, became one of the most popular writers of the twentieth century. His books, a series of stories based on his experiences as a young veterinary surgeon working among the farming community of North Yorkshire, sold

in their millions throughout the world. Their great success spawned two feature films in the mid 1970s, followed by a BBC television series, All Creatures Great and Small, which enjoyed global success in the late 1970s and early 80s. Most recently a TV series was commissioned showing the life and times of James Herriot in his younger days.

Alfred Wight died in 1995 but his books still sell, the television series is still played throughout the world.

Since it’s opening in 1999, The World of James Herriot has attracted over half million visitors worldwide. It continues to attract people far and wide, looking to get an insight into the life of Yorkshires best loved author.

A BRIEF HISTORY

BALDERSBY PARK The Deer Shed Festival is into its third year, and we“re chuffed with that, yet it“s a mere pimple on the great and grand history of the festival“s incredible backdrop.

As you look around you see a stunning Georgian house and in front of it an ornamental lake (home to this year’s Lake Stage). You may also notice the huge pile of earth at one end of the lake. This is a small part of the preservation and restoration work that the whole parkland is currently undergoing.

The park in its current form dates back to Georgian times, when a rich businessman by the name of Sir William Robinson decided to build the first neo-Palladian villa in England, set in designed landscape. The house was designed by the celebrated architect, Colen Campbell, and was built in 1729. It appears in Campbell’s third volume of Vitruvius Britannicus, the earliest book on country house architecture.

As for the land attached to the house, it has a much richer and darker history. Underneath the house and grounds was a medieval village by the name of Newby. It was ransacked by the Scots in the fourteenth century, and believed to have never really recovered after they set

it alight in 1320. Marking the road into this ancient settlement are two surviving ancient oaks, over six hundred years old.

You should also know that your cars are parked on the remains of a medieval farming system, called rigg and furrow and instead of a sea of tents, you’d be looking at a Georgian cricket pitch, ready for the genteel folk of the area to get together for a match.

The twentieth century proved a tumultuous time for the house, beginning with a terrible fire that nearly saw it ruined. During both the wars, the military requisitioned the house for its own use; evidence of which still exists to this day. An archaeologist found a long screw type object on one of the last remaining Georgian tree guards and found that it was used by WW2 soldiers to twist barbed wire.

It was between the wars that a large portion of land was leased, and subsequently sold, to a local farmer. Ninety years later his family are still farming the land, and with the help of grants restoring this fabulous piece of history.
