2025 ISSUE - ST. JOHNS LIFE & STYLE MAGAZINE
DEBBIE GAYLORD

In this issue, we celebrate the spirit of giving through the story of Community Nutcracker, a beloved local tradition that began with a simple dream and has grown into a powerful expression of generosity and grace. We also honor our Veterans, with a feature on Marine Veteran Chris Gobeli, whose story of service, leadership, and integrity reminds us that gratitude should be more than a feeling, it should be an action.
And of course, November wouldn’t be complete without culinary delights. Our Foodie Bucket List from longtime contributor Lori Allen spotlights dishes you simply have to try in St. Johns, while epicurean Ali Lindenfeld, shares her favorite local plates and why they’ve captured her heart (and taste buds).
To round out the season of celebration, Seri Kertzner, owner of The Social Society and our resident entertaining expert, offers her insider tips for hosting effortlessly stylish holiday gatherings right here in St. Johns.
As always, I’m filled with deep gratitude for this community, for the local businesses that inspire us, and for you, our readers, who continue to support and believe in what we do. Here’s to a November filled with gratitude, connection, and the joy of sharing good food with good people.
On a final note, we are thrilled to announce a significant expansion to our publishing family: the launch of St. Johns Woman, arriving in January 2026. The Community Nutcracker is a holiday performance that blends artistry, volunteerism, and compassion into one enduring tradition. For more than three decades, this locally produced ballet has brought The Nutcracker’s timeless story to life while transforming its proceeds into tangible good for the community. Its origin story reads like a Christmas fable. In 1991, five local dance directors, suddenly separated from a symphony partnership, stood together on a downtown street corner and refused to let their vision fade. “We left the office downtown in May of 1991,” recalls Founding Artistic Director Beth Marks, “and there on the street corner we decided we wanted to create a new Nutcracker production utilizing the newly renovated Florida Theatre as our
home.” With each donating $100, they formed a nonprofit built entirely on passion and purpose. The first performance took the stage in 1992, what Marks calls “a true Christmas miracle.” From the beginning, the Community Nutcracker has stood apart. It’s one of the only nonprofit, volunteer-run Nutcrackers in Northeast Florida, created not just to perform but to give back. “The Leukemia Society was the first foundation to team with us,” says Marks. “Since 2014, Dreams Come True has been our partner and major benefactor. So many of their ‘Dreamers’ have fulfilled their dreams thanks to the Community Nutcracker.” Over the years, the production has donated nearly $1 million to local charities, an extraordinary achievement powered entirely by volunteers.
That spirit of generosity extends to the artistry itself. In the early years, sets were simple, built and painted by local artists like Virginia Fox, whose backdrops first appeared in Jacksonville’s 1972 Nutcracker benefiting the Children’s Museum (now MOSH). Today, audiences are transported by breathtaking production elements: a growing Christmas tree, swirling snow, and a dazzling Land of Sweets castle. “This timeless story, music, and dance continue to mesmerize and delight families,” says Marks.
Each December, more than 200 local dancers, from age 9 to adult, bring Clara’s world to life. “Auditions are open to everyone,” explains Crystal Ponder, 2025 President of the Community Nutcracker’s Board of Directors. “It’s a professional process, but the real magic is in the friendships and growth that happen along the way.”
Behind the scenes, hundreds of volunteers fuel the production’s heart. “It’s not just going to watch a show,” says Angie Kindler, 2025 Costume Mistress. “Knowing we’re helping kids achieve their dreams, that we’re part of something bigger than ourselves”.
More than 30 years later, what began with five choreographers and $500 has become a Jacksonville holiday tradition unlike any other. The Community Nutcracker continues to prove that when creativity meets compassion, magic truly follows, turning every pirouette, every note, and every snowfall into a celebration of community at its best.
“It’s not just going to watch a show... Knowing we’re helping kids achieve their dreams, that we’re part of something bigger than ourselves”.
—Angie Kindler, 2025 Costume Mistress

Audiences knew him best as Drosselmeyer, the mysterious godfather whose gift sets The Nutcracker’s story in motion. With a twinkle in his eye and a commanding stage presence, Dr. George Trotter brought warmth, wonder, and gravitas to the role, leaving an indelible mark on the Community Nutcracker’s history. But Dr. Trotter’s legacy went far beyond the stage. He saw the Community Nutcracker as a gift to the community, a way to share the joy of live performance with everyone.
“When Dr. Trotter walked on stage as Drosselmeyer, you knew you were about to witness magic. He embodied the spirit of the show, part mystery, part generosity, and all heart.”
In his honor, the George Trotter Community Service Night Sponsorship continues his vision of accessibility and inclusion. This cherished evening invites local nonprofit organizations and families who might not otherwise experience live theater to enjoy the magic together—one of the most meaningful traditions of the season.
“George’s dream was to make The Nutcracker something for everyone. Community Service Night is the purest expression of that dream.”
A highlight of the evening is the recognition of a Dreamer from Dreams Come True, Northeast Florida’s only locally based dream-granting nonprofit for children battling life-threatening illnesses. Each year, one child’s dream is celebrated on stage, an unforgettable moment of joy, hope, and unity shared by dancers and audience alike.
Through his artistry and compassion, Dr. Trotter captured the very essence of the Community Nutcracker: the joy of giving, the hope of the holidays, and the enduring power of community.

Meet Lori Allen, St. Johns Magazine’s longtime food writer and culinary connoisseur. With more than 50 restaurant reviews to her name, as My Wandering Fork, Lori has spent years exploring the heart of our local dining scene—one unforgettable plate at a time. Her palate is as discerning as her prose is inviting, capturing the essence of each meal with a storyteller’s touch. From elevated coastal cuisine to the hidden gems only locals know, Lori’s taste for authenticity and flavor shines through every review. Here, she shares a few of her favorite local plates— in the foodie bucket list — each one a delicious reflection of St. Johns’ vibrant food culture.
“If there’s one thing I love as much as exploring new places, it’s discovering incredible food that feels like a little celebration on a plate. Whether it’s something familiar that hits all the right comfort notes or a surprising twist that makes me pause. These are some of the dishes and bites I keep coming back to — the kind that make me smile every time my fork hits the table.”

Miss Cruffin French Bakery
445 State Road 13, St Johns
This is the only spot on the first coast where a muffin and a croissant come together to create the cruffin. They’ve mastered chocolate, butter, and flour — no passport to Paris needed. Swing by for a shot of espresso, a latte, or a cappuccino, and grab a fresh artisanal croissant or cruffin. Keep it simple. C’est simplement délicieux.
Romashka Euro Deli & Bakery
150 Fountains Way, St Johns
Eastern European products right here? Yup! My favorite part: the European chocolate aisle. All the chocolates we usually bring back from our travels — right here in our own backyard! Now I can curb those cravings for deep, dark chocolatey goodness that’s usually hard to find. Pair that with their freshly baked bread, and it’s definitely worth a visit.
Simone's Wood Fired Craft Kitchen
185 Murabella Parkway, World Golf
Check out Two of my favorite foods made fresh at Simones: Marina's Old-World Meatballs. Ground veal, pork, beef, fresh herbs, pomodoro sauce, and a blend of Italian cheeses. I can never pass up a good meatball — and these are some of the best in the area! And then there's the Beef Carpaccio — a rare find around here. Shaved raw beef, capers, Parmesan, house vinaigrette, and greens, all served with a grilled artisan baguette. If you’re a carpaccio lover (like me!), this one’s a must-try — fresh, flavorful, and perfectly done.

Tsunami Sushi & Hibachi
12553 Bartram Park Blvd #304, Jacksonville 32258
Fresh sushi, anyone? This spot offers all-you-can-eat sushi for both lunch and dinner — and yes, it’s as good as it sounds. We love going on weekends for lunch and making it our one big meal of the day. The sushi comes out in small plates, so you can sample a little bit of everything — plus enjoy hibachi, fried rice, and more all in one go. I’m all about the sashimi, hibachi steak, and fried rice — and after that, I’m satisfied for the rest of the day!
Bella Vista
540 State Rd 13 N, Fruit Cove

Start with the arancini, golden, crispy rice balls filled with creamy risotto and a hint of mozzarella that melts with every bite. They’re perfectly fried, impossibly light, and utterly irresistible. Next, the eggplant rollatini, thin slices of eggplant wrapped around a velvety ricotta filling, baked in a bright tomato sauce, and finished with bubbling cheese. It’s comforting, elegant, and exactly what you want from a true Italian kitchen. Pair these with a glass of red, lean back, and soak in the easygoing atmosphere, part trattoria, part neighborhood hangout , where every meal feels both familiar and special.

Poppy's Italiano
104 Ashourian Way ) Suite 101, St. Johns

If you know me, you know I love me some Poppy’s Italiano! Every dish gives me that cozy, home-cooked Italian meal feeling. But one of my absolute favorites and what I like to call a true mouth-gasm, is their Boursin Cheese Bruschetta. Think soft, garlicky, creamy Boursin cheese, fresh tomatoes, and a drizzle of bright, fresh pesto all piled onto crispy ciabatta. The crunch of the bread with the creamy cheese and those fresh flavors? Bite after bite... I can’t get enough.
Salento Colombian Steakhouse
Silver Leaf, 60 Silver Forest Drive, Suite 113
Calling all steak lovers! Of course I love a great steak but for me, the fat is everything. That’s where all the flavor lives! So of course its always going to be Ribeye. Salento’s serves up the perfect ribeye grilled to perfection and bursting with flavor. They use a house blend of spices with rosemary, butter, garlic, salt, and pepper that takes it to the next level. It comes with three sides and you get to choose from options like arroz blanco, frijoles rojos, cassava, ensalada, patacón, grilled veggies, arepa, papa criolla, or sweet plantains. It’s easily sharable, but I won’t blame you if you keep it all to yourself. Pair it with their recommended Argentinian Malbec, and suddenly, you’re transported, maybe not to a fancy steakhouse, but your taste buds will definitely think so.
Moon dog Pie house
116 Bartram Oaks Walk, Fruit Cove,
Love a great slice of pizza? Try the Moon Dog! I always go for pizza by the slice here, and here’s why: The slices are huge. The crust is perfectly crispy. I get to mix it up, one plain, one fully loaded. The cheese and crunch totally remind me of that classic Northeastern-style pizza I grew up loving. And if you’re ready to go all out, do not skip the Chicago-style pie. It’s legit, thick, stuffed with cheese, and seriously so, so, so good.
Chophouse at Nocatee
330 Pine Lake Dr.
Rooftop bar, anyone? Chophouse Nocatee has a really cool rooftop spot that’s perfect for an early evening happy hour. One of my go-to bites? Their Oysters Rockefeller, fresh oysters baked with creamy spinach, parmesan, panko, and a touch of Pernod. It’s the perfect bite after a long day. And yes, I’m back again with the carpaccio. I can’t help it! It’s light but packed with flavor. Its made with thinly sliced wagyu, black truffle vinaigrette, shaved parmesan, and fresh arugula. Simple, elegant, and so satisfying.
Trattoria di Bernardone

425 Durbin Pavilion Dr, St. Johns
I love the bar area in this little hot spot — it’s cozy, lively, and the perfect way to kick off the night. Start with a Basil Martini, made with their own basil-infused syrup, or go for the Espresso Martini, served in a goblet, rich, bold, and so delicious. All of their pasta is homemade using Italianimported ingredients. And as a true olive oil and garlic gal, I had to get the Gemelli con Salsiccia e Funghi Aglio e Olio, “twins” pasta in a zesty garlic and olive oil sauce with Italian sausage and mushrooms. Garlic, sausage, mushrooms… what more could you want? It’s packed with flavor. I’ve also been told their Calamari is a must-try (and I love calamari), so I’ll definitely be heading back just for that. Why don’t you check it out too?
Al Dente
90 Shops Blvd, Unit 60 St Johns,
When dining here, you must get the mussels. It’s a big, warm bowl of fresh mussels drenched in a white wine sauce that’s just begging for a good bread dip. I always pair it with the garlic shrimp, so I can double-dip that fresh bread into both the herby, garlicky shrimp sauce and the mussel broth. Together, they’re basically a full meal. and an absolutely delicious one at that.
For me, Food has this magical way of bringing moments to life, whether it’s a casual lunch, a night out, or just a craving you can’t shake. These favorites are more than just meals; they’re little escapes, memories, and of course, perfect bites I’ll happily chase again and again. Thanks for tagging along on this tasty adventure, where every bite’s a little story. Feeling hungry?
Yeah, same here (always LOL ) . Let’s eat!

When most people imagine the holidays, they picture roaring fireplaces and snowflakes. But here in Ponte Vedra Beach, we do things a little differently. Our “white Christmas” is made of sandy beaches, our decorations sparkle under palm trees, and our celebrations are just as merry—only with a lot more sunshine and in my case, a pink Christmas tree!
I am personally one to seriously take advantage of our warm winter evenings by moving the party outdoors. String twinkling café lights across your patio or backyard, set the table under a canopy of stars, and let nature provide the atmosphere. A mix of candles and lanterns will add a cozy glow without the need for a fireplace. Bonus: kids can roast s’mores over the fire pit while adults sip festive cocktails al fresco.

This season, trade in traditional evergreens for something a little more Florida. Think bowls of bright citrus fruits, magnolia leaves, palm fronds, and fresh greenery. Or use whole or sliced oranges and grapefruits as part of your tablescape—they not only look gorgeous but smell amazing too. Add a few sprigs of rosemary for a natural, fragrant touch that feels both coastal and holiday-ready. At the end of your party, provide gift bags for your guests to load up on fresh fruit to take home with them and enjoy.

Instead of heavy, wintry dishes, serve light, fresh foods that reflect our coastal lifestyle. A chilled shrimp platter, citrus-glazed salmon, or a signature “Florida Fizz” cocktail made with sparkling wine and fresh grapefruit are all crowd-pleasers. Finish the night with key lime tartlets or coconut cake for a sweet tropical twist.
When hosting a sit down dinner for the holidays I always set out place cards so everyone feels welcome and is not anxious about where to sit. We have the sweetest set in the shop right now for easy handwriting.

Mix in hints of nostalgia and fun—Trivia cards at each place setting or at the bar if you’re hosting a cocktail party, holiday tunes with a beachy twist, colorful ornaments in bowls of sand, or napkin rings made of starfish and ribbon. The key is to create a space that feels festive yet relaxed—where your guests feel right at home, whether they’re in flip-flops or sequins.
Here in Florida, we have the unique gift of celebrating the holidays surrounded by sunshine, friends, and the beauty of the outdoors. So this year, open your doors (and your backyards), embrace the coastal charm, and make memories that sparkle as brightly as the lights on your palm trees.

For many, military service ends with the final salute. But for Marine Corps veteran and local business owner Chris Gobeli, the mission took a new form, one grounded in craftsmanship, community, and the enduring values of service.
Gobeli, founder of Outdoor Transformations, brings the same precision, discipline, and integrity he learned in the United States Marine Corps to every project he undertakes in St. Johns. His company, known for its expert hardscaping and landscape design, reflects the ethos that shaped his nine years of service, an ethos that continues to inspire his life, his work, and his community.
“I joined at 19 after suffering a career-ending injury playing football,” Gobeli recalls. “I needed direction, and I was proud of my family tradition in the Marine Corps. Both of my grandfathers were Marines; one served 20 years and trained recruits at Parris Island, the other fought in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War. There was no other option in my eyes.”
From 2006 to 2015, Gobeli served as part of VMA-542, deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to Al Asad Airbase in Iraq’s Al Anbar Province. “We maintained 100% mission readiness and completed every mission assigned,” he says. Later, in 2010, he deployed aboard the USS Bataan as part of a Marine Expeditionary Unit, traveling through Spain, Greece, the UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

has been one of discipline, integrity, and purpose,” Gobeli says. “In the Marines, the mission always comes first, and you take care of your people so the mission succeeds. In business, it’s no different. Our mission is delivering excellence for our clients, and my team is family.”
That sense of leadership extends well beyond the job site. As a husband and father of three, Gobeli’s motivation is deeply personal. “My family fuels my drive to build a company that reflects the values I want to pass down: hard work, honesty, and craftsmanship that stands the test of time.”
"My family fuels my drive to build a company that reflects the values I want to pass down: hard work, honesty, and craftsmanship that stands the test of time.” ”

His years in the Marines taught lessons that would define his second career. “The path from the Marine Corps to Outdoor Transformations
Each project, Gobeli explains, is more than just a business transaction. “Every Outdoor Transformations project represents an opportunity to serve my community, to honor my commitment to excellence, and to demonstrate the same discipline and integrity that defined my military service.”
When asked what advice he’d offer to young people considering military service, Gobeli doesn’t hesitate. “It will be the best worst time of your life,” he says. “You’ll give a piece of yourself, and you’ll miss it every day after. Enjoy each moment, better yourself in every way, and never take it for granted.”
These days, Gobeli finds peace not on distant shores, but at home, tossing a ball with his kids, spending time with his wife, or sneaking in a round of golf when he can.
For Gobeli, the mission of service never really ended. It simply transformed, from protecting the nation abroad to building spaces of beauty, connection, and pride right here in St. Johns.

By: Eric Hernandez, U.S. Air Force Veteran, First Coast YMCA Military Strategy Co-Leader & YMCA at Wildlight Operations Director

For many men and women throughout the First Coast, Veterans Day on November 11th is personal. Florida has the third-highest veteran population in the country, so chances are, if you haven’t served, you probably know someone who has. We also have a high population of activeduty service members here, with several military installations located in Duval and Clay counties. Serving our country resonates with a lot of people, and it’s part of what makes our community so special.
At the First Coast YMCA, serving veterans and those in active duty is a priority for us every day, not just on November 11th. As an Armed Services YMCA affiliate, we have dedicated programming and services for anyone who wears or has worn a military uniform, as well as their families. We offer discounted rates for membership and summer camp, as well as a wellness program called Operation Strong & Ready (OSR), which is specially designed for service members to prepare them to operate at peak performance and pass their branch’s fitness test. OSR is an 8-week program (1.5 hours, twice a week) led by certified First Coast YMCA wellness coaches and personal trainers. We also have a veteran version of OSR that focuses on general physical and mental wellness. Military Outdoor Adventures is outdoor hiking with fellow veterans through our partnership with Sierra Club, which gives participants a chance to connect and enjoy nature on monthly outings. Aside from visiting local parks on these hikes, we have heard how camaraderie and friendships have blossomed from these events, as veterans and active-duty share a special bond after serving in the military.
November is also National Military Family Month, and as mentioned above, we know how important it is to have programs for families of veterans and active-duty service members. It can be difficult to make connections when you’re constantly moving around, and we want to make the transition process to living here in Northeast Florida a little easier. Operation Hero is free for active-duty military children in 1st – 6th grade. This program helps students cope and adjust to the unique challenges of military life, such as frequent moves and deployment separation.
We wouldn’t be able to provide these programs – many of which are at no or low cost to participants – without the support of the community. Organizations like VyStar Credit Union have been instrumental in supporting our mission to give back to the military community, including in our annual Military Back to School Bash in the summer. Individual donors who recognize the impact our programs and services help ensure that military members and veterans have the resources they need to live a healthy life. As cooler weather arrives in Florida, many Northeast Florida travelers are looking for a quick, warm-weather getaway. Few destinations rival the beauty and exclusivity of Turks and Caicos. With its sugar-white sand, turquoise waters, and collection of worldclass resorts, it has become a favorite for couples, families, and groups seeking luxury close to home.
Grace Bay Beach, consistently ranked among the world’s best, sets the stage for relaxation and adventure. Whether it’s snorkeling among colorful coral reefs, sailing to secluded cays, or indulging in a beachfront spa retreat, Turks and Caicos delivers both tranquility and unforgettable experiences. For Floridians, it’s the perfect prewinter escape, close enough for a short flight yet far enough to feel like a true tropical getaway.
The islands boast some of the Caribbean’s finest resorts, ranging from intimate boutique properties to family-friendly all-inclusive options.
The Shore Club: A sophisticated luxury resort on Long Bay Beach, offering spacious suites, private villas, and multiple infinity pools. Perfect for couples seeking romance or groups looking for private villa living with full resort amenities.
Beaches Turks & Caicos: A perennial favorite for families, this expansive all-inclusive resort features multiple villages, a 45,000-square-foot waterpark, and dining options to suit every taste. Parents love the kids’ programs, while adults enjoy the spa and premium dining experiences.
Amanyara and COMO Parrot Cay are also top picks for those craving complete seclusion and personalized service.
Beyond the beach, I recommend a private boat charter to explore uninhabited islands, guided snorkeling in the Coral Gardens reef,
or a sunset horseback ride along the water. Foodies will love the island’s growing culinary scene, with upscale beachside dining offering everything from conch fritters to gourmet seafood.
Getting to Turks and Caicos from North Florida is simple. Travelers can fly from Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) with a short connection, or opt for nonstop service out of Orlando (MCO) to Providenciales (PLS). Flight time is typically under three hours, making it one of the easiest Caribbean islands to reach.
While Turks and Caicos is a year-round destination, peak travel dates fill quickly. Booking early ensures access to the best suites and villas, as well as VIP experiences such as private dining or yacht charters.
Whether you’re craving a romantic getaway, a family adventure, or a luxury beach retreat, Turks and Caicos offers it all. As your trusted luxury travel advisor, I’ll handle every detail from your resorts, transfers, and exclusive perks so all you need to do is relax and enjoy paradise.

Bring warmth, flavor, and a touch of Florida sunshine to your Thanksgiving celebration with this quick guide to a perfect feast.
THE TURKEY (CENTERPIECE OF THE FEAST)
1 whole turkey (12–16 lbs), olive oil or butter, salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, onion, lemon, rosemary, thyme, and sage. How to Cook It: Thaw 24 hours for every 4 lbs. Pat dry, remove giblets, and rub with butter and seasonings. Stuff with aromatics. Roast at 325°F for about 15 minutes per pound, basting every 45 minutes. When thigh temperature reaches 165°F, it’s done. Let rest 20–30 minutes before carving.
CREAMY MASHED POTATOES
Boil peeled Yukon Golds until tender. Mash with butter, warm cream, salt, and pepper until smooth and fluffy.
SAVORY STUFFING
Sauté onion and celery in butter. Mix with bread cubes, broth, and herbs. Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes until golden.
CRANBERRY JELLY ROLLS
Spread cranberry sauce on puff pastry, roll, slice, and bake at 400°F for 12–15 minutes. Serve warm as a sweet-tart side.

FLORIDA CITRUS & CORN SALAD
Grill corn, toss with orange, avocado, red onion, lime juice, and olive oil. Bright, refreshing, and pure Florida flavor.
SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE WITH COCONUT & PECANS
Mash sweet potatoes with butter, brown sugar, and coconut milk. Top with pecans, coconut, and honey; bake at 350°F for 25 minutes.
FINAL TOUCHES
Set the table with golds and greenery, light citrus-scented candles, and play soft jazz. Then pour a glass of wine and savor a Thanksgiving that’s traditional, local, and unmistakably St. Johns style.

Bubbly: Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs — ~$70–80. Bright green-apple and brioche notes make this sparkling Chardonnay ideal for toasting before dinner and pairing delightfully with appetizers.
White: Rombauer Chardonnay — ~$45–55. A lush, buttery California Chardonnay enriched with baked apple and vanilla flavors. A luxurious choice that pairs beautifully with turkey, gravy and creamy sides.
Red: Belle Glos Pinot Noir — ~$65–75. Silky and fruit-forward, this Pinot Noir offers cherry-cranberry tones and soft tannins that echo Thanksgiving flavors and complement both stuffing and turkey.

Obesity is one of the most common — and most preventable — health problems seen in pets today. Studies estimate that over half of dogs and cats in the United States are overweight or obese. While a few extra pounds might look harmless or even “cute,” those pounds can significantly shorten a pet’s lifespan and contribute to serious health problems.
Excess body fat affects nearly every organ system. In dogs and cats, obesity can:
•Increase the risk of diabetes mellitus – Especially in cats, excess fat reduces the body’s sensitivity to insulin.
•Put strain on joints and bones – Leading to arthritis, back pain, and reduced mobility.
•Worsen heart and respiratory conditions – Overweight pets often struggle to breathe comfortably and tire easily.
•Increase surgical and anesthetic risk – Fat around organs makes anesthesia and recovery more difficult.
•Reduce overall lifespan – Studies show that lean pets live up to two years longer than their overweight counterparts.
•Decrease quality of life – Obese pets often become less playful and may suffer from chronic pain or fatigue. Even mild excess weight — just 10–20% above ideal — can have measurable effects on a pet’s health and longevity.
The most common cause is simple: pets take in more calories than they burn. Contributing factors include:
•Free-feeding or excessive treats
•High-calorie diets and table scraps
•Lack of regular exercise
•Neutering (which slightly lowers metabolism)
•Underlying medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism or Cushing’s disease
Genetics can also play a role. Certain breeds — like
Labrador Retrievers, Dachshunds, Beagles, and domestic shorthaired cats — tend to gain weight more easily.
Because pet owners see their animals every day, gradual weight gain can be hard to notice. Some signs your pet may be overweight include:
•Difficulty feeling ribs without pressing firmly
•Lack of a visible waist when viewed from above
•Sagging belly or “pouch”
•Reluctance to exercise or climb stairs
Your veterinarian can determine your pet’s body condition score (BCS) — a standardized way to evaluate weight relative to size and body type.
Weight management should always be guided by your veterinarian, but here are key strategies that make a difference:
Get an accurate starting point.
A physical exam and body condition assessment help rule out underlying diseases before starting a weight-loss plan.
Feed for the ideal weight, not the current weight.
Your veterinarian can calculate your pet’s daily calorie target and recommend a prescription or low-calorie diet that provides balanced nutrition while promoting fat loss.
Measure meals precisely.
Always use a measuring cup or kitchen scale — “eyeballing” portions often leads to overfeeding. Limit treats.
Treats should make up less than 10% of daily calories. Opt for low-calorie options like baby carrots, green
by Dr. Kathleen Deckard,

beans, non-buttered popcorn, or a portion of the pet’s regular kibble.
Encourage daily activity.
Regular walks, play sessions, and puzzle feeders help burn calories and stimulate the mind.
Weigh regularly.
Recheck your pet’s weight every 2–4 weeks. Small, consistent progress is ideal — typically 1–2% of body weight per week.
Obesity is not just a cosmetic issue — it’s a serious medical condition that affects your pet’s comfort, longevity, and happiness. The good news is that with proper nutrition, portion control, and regular activity, most pets can safely return to a healthy weight.
If you’re unsure where your pet stands, schedule a weightcheck or nutrition consultation with your veterinarian. A healthier, more energetic life is within reach — one measured meal and brisk walk at a time.
