La Catrina
LaCatrinalovers.com
CALLING ALL LOCALS if you haven't been to LA CATRINA Tacos & Tequila Bar recently then you are missing out!
The restaurant has done a complete makeover from the new murals on the wall to new and exciting Authentic Mexican dishes. The secret is out (much to the chagrin of some of the regulars who have been quietly enjoying all the new recipes and cocktails!) and you must revisit this establishment!
Favorite Dishes
First let's talk about the diversity of the food. Of course there are the usual great authentic Mexican suspects but they have included some fun and exciting new dishes.
Start out with the Ceviche- so fresh and light, Shrimp Onions, tomatoes, jalapeños, cilantro, cooked in lime juice, topped with avocado and for fun and flare add the tender Octopus(Pulpo). You won't be disappointed.
Lets move on to some of the main courses. One of my ultimate favorites is the Molcajete- A hot lava stone bowl filled with grilled steak, sliced chicken breast, chorizo, shrimp, grilled cactus (so juicy and good!) onions, peppers and tomatoes, topped with special sauce and oaxaca cheese. This easily feeds two if not three people and is filled with so much flavor that you can't help but reach in for more!
Than there is of course their street Tacos. I recently was introduced to birria tacos, a traditional dish from Jalisco, Mexico, with tender beef, spicy sauce, and crispy tortillas. LA CATRINA steps it up a notch with melty quesabirria tacos - that's right cheese and a flavorful broth to dip all that goodness into!
Gotta love the Jaguar taco - Battered fried fish on a bed of slaw, pico de gallo, cheese, topped with mango habanero salsa. And the Chinola Ribeye Taco -Ribeye steak, topped with house chimichurri (my fav), pico de gallo, and queso fresco. Or how about being a little daring and try the Taco Lengua (you guessed it!) -Beef Tongue Taco: choice of corn or flour tortilla, topped with cilantro and onions. There are so many more to choose from and of course they have special pricing on "Taco Tuesdays!"
And for variety because as you know its the spice of life! Give the Cream of Mushroom Pollo a try - seasoned grilled chicken breast topped with their very own house special cream of mushroom sauce. So creamy and good!
Tequilla & More!
So when you walk in you will be amazed at the "Tequila Wall" There is every kind of Tequila you could imagine so artfully displayed that makes you want to try them all! I mean you can't go wrong with their skinny or house margarita. Tangy and delicious! But how about trying some of their unique flavor combinations like Blueberry Jalapeno or one of their fun concoctions like ROSEMARY Vodka which is Lychee Syrup, Lemon Juice, Grapefruit and Rosemary Tonic, Vodka, Lychee Syrup, Lemon Juice served over Rose Shaped Ice?! One cocktail that I love is an Old fashioned well LA CATRINA surprised me with their Mexican Old Fashioned that has Tequila Blanco, Mezcal, Angostura Bitters, Agave, Cherry and Orange served in this unique smoking bird cage. It was so cool! You must try one!
So go back or try this exceptional restaurant that has some of the most unique authentic dishes and creative cocktails this side of town! And if its your birthday you must let them know...they have this unique way of celebrating..all I can say is that a mini airplane is involved!

STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE WITH ROTATIONAL MED BALL SLAMS
Benefits of the Rotational Med Ball Slams
• Core Stability and Strength: The exercise heavily engages the core, particularly the obliques and transverse abdominis. This helps improve stability and strength, which is crucial for many sports, reaching your goals in Camp, or simply aiding your daily activities.
• Explosive Power Development: The dynamic movement of slamming the ball to either side of your body helps develop explosive strength in the upper body and legs. This is beneficial for athletes looking to improve performance in sports that require quick, powerful movements.
• Improved Coordination and Balance: The rotational aspect of the slam challenges your coordination and balance. When repeated, this can enhance athletic performance and functional movement patterns.
• Full-Body Engagement: While the primary focus of this exercise is the core, it also hits multiple muscle groups, including the shoulders, back, arms, and legs, making it an efficient full-body workout.
• Enhanced Cardiovascular Fitness: Trust us, you’ll break a sweat if you’re performing rotational med ball slams at max reps. This highintensity exercise can elevate your heart rate, providing cardiovascular benefits while also building strength.
• Increased Range of Motion: The rotational movement encourages a
• Greater range of motion in the torso, which can enhance flexibility and mobility in the spine and hips.
• Stress Relief and Functional Movement: Don’t forget about your mental health! The act of slamming the ball can serve as a great stress reliever.
• Versatility and Scalability: Med ball slams can be easily modified for different fitness levels. You can adjust the weight of the ball, the speed of the movement, your range of motion, and the number of repetitions to suit your training needs. You can always talk to your Trainer about how to efficiently mod up or mod down this exercise.
Tips for the Med Ball Slam
Rotational med ball slams are an excellent exercise for building strength, power, and coordination. To perform this exercise safely and effectively, while also minimizing risk to injury, it’s important to focus on technique and follow some key tips.
• Maintain a Neutral Spine: Keep your back straight and avoid excessive rounding or arching during the movement.
• Engage Your Core: Before you start the movement, activate your core muscles. This will provide stability and support for your spine throughout the exercise.
• Controlled Movement: Use controlled motions rather than excessive force, especially when picking up or slamming the ball.
• Use Your Legs: Bend your knees slightly as you prepare to slam the ball. This engagement of the legs helps generate more power and allows for a more explosive movement.
• Control Your Breathing: Exhale sharply as you slam the ball down. This can enhance core engagement and provide more power to your movement.
• Pay Attention to Your Back and Hips: As you rotate, ensure that the movement originates from your hips and torso, not just your arms. This distributes the load more evenly and protects your lower back..
A Message from Krista Joseph, SJC Board of Commissioners Distrcit 4 Chair
As 2025 has begun and we have all settled back into our routines from the holidays, I wanted to update citizens on the exciting news and notes from your St. Johns County Government.
In November, I was proud to reschedule public comments to the beginning of the Board of County Commission (BCC) meetings for the first time since it was moved to a later time during the COVID-19 Pandemic. To kick off 2025, we have already accomplished:
☑ The reopening of the Ocean and Fishing Pier (350 A1A Beach Blvd., St. Augustine Beach, for fishing and site seeing.

The Most Important Heart-To-Heart Conversation
By: Connie Smith, Senior Healthy Living Director, First Coast YMCA
According to the American Heart Association, nearly half of the adult population in the United States has high blood pressure That percentage increases for older Americans, and those with hypertension over the age of 60 are at an elevated risk for heart disease and stroke. Here in Northeast Florida, according to a 2023 community survey, St. Johns County ranked above the state average for total percentage of adults with high blood pressure. Also, heart failure was either the top or second-most common reason for hospitalization in all five counties in our area (Duval, St. Johns, Nassau, Baker, and Clay.) Many people with high blood pressure don’t know what to do following that diagnosis. Fortunately, there are resources that can help people get their blood pressure under control, and the First Coast YMCA is here to do just that.
Lowering your blood pressure starts with eating healthy and exercising regularly, which you can do at any of our branches. But we also offer our Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring program that can serve as a valuable tool in getting your blood pressure under control. The program is personalized to your needs and is facilitated by trained Heart Healthy Ambassadors who walk you through how to use a self-monitoring blood pressure cuff and how to track your readings. The Ambassador will communicate with you regularly during the four-month program, both face-to-face and by phone or email. They will provide support, guidance, and encouragement as you monitor and record your blood pressure at home, plus valuable nutrition information on how to lower hypertension risks with healthy eating.
The goal of the program is to not only educate those with high blood pressure on what may trigger elevated levels, but also to empower them to monitor it safely, while also serving as a resource that participants can come to if they have any questions.
February is Heart Health Month, so if you’re not sure if you have high blood pressure, please talk to your doctor and get checked today.
If you’ve been diagnosed with hypertension, we’re here to help, so please reach out to your local branch. We’re always accepting new members for Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring and want to get you on the right path to maintaining a healthy level. The program is a part of our Healthy Living focus, as we want to serve the needs of the community, including those battling chronic diseases like hypertension. For a full list of our Healthy Living programs, please visit fcymca.org/programs/healthy-living or stop by a branch today.
RECLAIMING STRENGTH: The Science of Sports Rehabilitation
Injuries are a reality for athletes, from elite competitors to weekend warriors. Beyond physical setbacks, injuries can also affect emotional well-being, especially when they interrupt the activities that bring joy and purpose. Recovery requires more than rest—it demands a thoughtful, individualized approach to rehabilitation.
Modern sports rehabilitation focuses on addressing both the injury and its root causes. A holistic assessment of the body is often the starting point. Physical therapists examine areas of weakness, tightness, and loss of mobility that may have contributed to the injury. For instance, a knee injury might stem from weak hip muscles or poor ankle stability. Identifying and addressing these underlying factors is key to preventing future problems.
Treatment typically combines hands-on therapy, such as joint mobilization or soft tissue techniques, with exercises that improve strength, flexibility, and range of motion. Additionally, sport-specific drills are used to prepare athletes for the unique demands of their activity. These exercises simulate the movements and reactions needed in their sport, helping them transition back to competition or play safely and confidently.
Education is another essential component of rehabilitation. Athletes learn proper body mechanics, effective stretching routines, and conditioning exercises to support long-term health and performance. This knowledge empowers them to take an active
role in their recovery and helps reduce the risk of reinjury.
Sports rehabilitation is about more than recovery—it’s about restoring confidence and function. By combining evidencebased techniques with personalized care, athletes can overcome setbacks and return to the activities they love, stronger than before.

LOVE AT FIRST SMILE; How Dental Health Can Add Years to Your Pet's Life!
When it comes to our beloved pets, we want them to live long, happy, and healthy lives. While we often focus on their diet, exercise, and regular veterinary check-ups, dental health is one area that’s often overlooked— despite its significant impact on overall wellbeing. February is Pet Dental Health Month, making it the perfect time to shine a light on how a healthy mouth can lead to a longer, more vibrant life for your furry companion.
The Mouth-Body Connection
Dental disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs and cats. It’s estimated that by the age of three, a staggering 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of periodontal disease. But dental problems don’t just stop at the gums. Left untreated, bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream, potentially leading to serious health conditions such as heart disease, kidney failure, and liver problems.
Oral health is directly tied to systemic health. When we treat a pet’s dental disease, we often see an immediate improvement in their energy levels and overall comfort. Addressing dental issues not only improves a pet’s quality of life but can also extend their lifespan.
Signs Your Pet May Need Dental Attention
Pets are experts at hiding pain, so it’s up to us to notice the subtle signs of dental trouble. Common indicators include:
→ Bad breath (more than just “doggy breath” or “tuna breath”)
→ Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
→ Yellow or brown tartar buildup on teeth
→ Difficulty eating or preference for soft foods
→ Drooling or pawing at the mouth
→ Loose or missing teeth
If you notice any of these symptoms, schedule a dental check-up with your veterinarian. Early intervention is key to preventing more serious issues.
The Power of Professional Cleanings
While at-home care is essential, professional
by a veterinarian are the gold standard for maintaining your pet’s oral health. These cleanings involve scaling to remove tartar above and below the gumline, polishing to smooth tooth surfaces, and a thorough examination for underlying issues such as fractures or resorptive lesions.
Many owners are amazed at the difference a dental cleaning makes. Pets often become more playful and engaged because they’re no longer dealing with chronic discomfort from dental disease.
→ Simple Steps for a Healthier Smile
→ Preventing dental disease starts at home. Here are a few tips to keep your pet’s teeth in top shape:
→ Brush Their Teeth: Daily brushing is the gold standard for dental care. Use a pet-safe toothbrush and toothpaste—never human toothpaste, as it can be toxic to pets.
→ Offer Dental Chews and Toys: Choose products approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) to reduce plaque and tartar.
→ Incorporate Dental Diets: Specially formulated dental diets can help clean teeth as pets chew, while also supporting overall oral health.
→ Use Water Additives: These can be an easy way to reduce plaque buildup for pets who are resistant to brushing.
A REAL-LIFE SUCCESS STORY
Take the story of Max, a 9-year-old Labrador Retriever who had been slowing down and avoiding his favorite chew toys. His owner assumed it was just a sign of aging. However, during a routine check-up, we discovered severe dental disease. After a professional cleaning and a few extractions, Max was back to playing like a puppy. His owner couldn’t believe the transformation, noting, “It’s like I got my dog back.”
A Healthier Mouth, A Happier Life
Dental care isn’t just about freshening breath or keeping teeth sparkling—it’s about ensuring your pet can live their best life, free from pain and discomfort. This February, take the opportunity to prioritize your pet’s oral health. A little extra care today can lead to many more happy, tail-wagging or purring years tomorrow.
BECAUSE WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR PET’S SMILE, LOVE TRULY STARTS THERE.
