How did the Avocado Toast Society get started?

Christmas Market Collaboration!

It all began with a fun, quirky name that sparked a bigger idea! Nikki-Lyn Holm, owner of The Coastal Home Group and Business Development Director (co-owner) of Stageology, is well-known for her passion for building relationships and connecting people within the community.

Inspired by her friend’s daughters, Nikki enthusiastically adopted the fun name and idea (with permission, of course!) and shared her vision for a networking group with her close friend and collaborator, Angie King of Allstate Insurance.

One of the creative ways the Secret Toast Society collaborates is by many of the members coming together to support an annual Christmas Market, held in Nocatee at Clean Juice each year for the past five years.

Their 5th annual holiday event will be held on Saturday, December 7th, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Join them for an afternoon of photo ops with Santa, festive fun with local vendors, unique holiday shopping, and delicious treats. Plus, don’t miss the fall-inspired seasonal menu at Clean Juice featuring flavors that perfectly capture the essence of autumn!

In April 2023, Nikki and Angie launched an intimate networking group on the patio of Clean Juice Nocatee, owned by Angie Lacey, who is always open to hosting events that spotlight small businesses in the area.

Foodie Vibes

What makes this group unique? They hold consistent monthly lunch meetings to foster intentional connections and allow just one representative per business category, but ensures the members are a good fit, and in it for the long haul. From the beginning, the group has been supported by influential community leaders, including Leighann Triplett of Milestone Title and Rhian Richard, owner of Primp Mobile Salon.

The rest is history!

La Dolce Vita

I love sharing a meal with family, and somehow it's even better when we go to a restaurant, whether locally or on our travels. As we sit around the table sharing stories, laughing, and appreciating the food and wine, I am transported to my happy place. I remember our trip to Italy in the summer of 2023. On the last night, we were in Lake Como and decided to attend a wine tasting to celebrate my son's birthday. We had never been before and weren’t sure what to expect. It was a small group, including our family of six, a couple from Australia, and a solo traveler. We tasted delicious Italian wines paired with perfect meats and cheeses. We laughed, learned about the wine, and connected with one another, with food as our central meeting place. As we left, thanking our gracious host, we all agreed it was the perfect way to end our trip In our November issue as we savor the best of food and wine in Northern St. Johns, I’m reminded that great food is more than sustenance—it’s an experience, a gathering of flavors and memories shared with friends and family. Whether it’s the comfort of a familiar dish or the excitement of discovering something new, food has a way of connecting us to each other and to the world around us.

In Northern St. Johns, we’re blessed with a culinary scene that truly embodies la dolce vita. From charming local cafes to elegant fine dining, there’s a place for every palate and occasion. BBQ & STEAK Woodpecker's BBQ (CR13) was the runaway winner for best BBQ. Locals know it’s the goto spot for brisket, ribs, and their famous datil sausage. If you’re new, it’s time to indulge!

For steak, readers crowned Ember & Iron in northern St. Johns. Whether it’s Chef Michael Cooney’s Chimichurri cteak or ribeye with frites, you won’t be disappointed.

Asado Life in St. Augustine emerged as another top pick, with Chef Matt Brown (formerly of Collage) mastering the art of grilling. Don't forget Salento for a unique Columbian steakhouse experience—they’ve recently expanded to Silverleaf.

Comfort Food

Burgers, Sandwiches, Wings & Pizza The Loop's burgers took top honors for their simple, juicy perfection - Pair with fries and house-made ranch for a perfect meal. Ice Plant in St. Augustine also dominated, winning several categories, including best burger for their use of delicious grass fed beef and housemade ketchup with a bonus atmosphere steeped in history.

For classic sandwiches, or "Hoagies" DeRita Italian Deli (CR210) was a crowd favorite, especially their Chicken Cutlet with Caesar and Old Italian hoagies. As voter Alexis raved, “DeRita’s Italian Deli is the real deal. I’ve never had a better sandwich. Better get there fast on Phillysteak Wednesdays because they sell out fast but the line out the door is worth the wait! Their monster-size sandwiches like the Caesar Cutlet or the Classic Italian NEVER disappoint. Great food and familyrun businesses with excellent service.” It doesn't get more authentic and old school than this!.

DeRita Italian Deli

Ah Pizza, the ideal Friday night meal, or any night really! Loyal pizzaloving voter’s chose Serafina’s Pizzaria on Racetrack Road as the favorite! It is no wonder their pizza is phenomenal! According to their website, Serafina’s promises a little taste of Brooklyn, NY, “...each pizza pie is handcrafted with one goal in mind, a mouthwatering pie that is waiting to be devoured from the first bite”. Try the New Yorker or the Vodka Margherita Prosciutto Pie. When it comes to wings, V Pizza, Treylor Park (Nocatee), and Serafina’s Pizzaria (again!) emerged as fan favorites. www.stjohnsmag.com

When it comes to finding the perfect bottle of cabernet, enjoying a wine tasting, or just relaxing, Tim’s Wine Market was voted Best Wine Bar! Its in the heart of northern St. Johns at the Forum at Greenbriar near Stonehurst. Readers loved its excellent selection, calm atmosphere and knowledgeable staff.

If you are heading to Nocatee, Coastal Wine Market is beloved by voters for its food, wine, and perfect night-out experience.

For cocktails, the Pistachio Martini at Bella Vista stole the show, alongside the expert mixology at Ember & Iron. If you're in St. Augustine, Ice Plant also received rave reviews.

Looking for craft beer? Ice Plant in St. Augustine and Wicked Barley Brewing Co. in Jacksonville were top choices, with 2nd Bay Brewing Co. in Bartram Walk in northern St. Johns gaining recognition for its comfy, pet-friendly vibe, and incredible tasting beer.

For health-conscious drinkers, Clean Juice (Nocatee) and New Leaf Nutrition (Fruit Cove) were reader favorites for smoothies and freshpressed juices.

Grumpy’s on CR210 at the Fountains Plaza took home the top prize for breakfast, perhaps for their yummy waffles, biscuits and gravy, or their upbeat friendly staff!

This was followed by the old school perfection of Cafe Genovese and a newcomer to St. Johns, Canopy Road (CR210 & St. Johns Parkway) as strong contenders. Don’t forget the best cup of Joe - that would be Pour Mike’s on CR210 just past I-95. The perfect spot to enjoy reading St. Johns Magazine!

In the diverse cuisine category, Jax Spice at Fountain Plaza was voted best Indian. Oola Mala - Sushi, Hot Pot, & Seafood Boil on St. Johns Parkway and Nori at the Forum at Greenbriar won for sushi. For the best Irish pub experience, locals loved Fionn MacCool’s (near Palencia), while Culhane’s was a hit in Jacksonville.

La Catrina on CR210 stood out for its Mexican food, fun décor, and unbeatable margaritas. Cantina Louie with multiple St. Johns locations and Casa Reina (St. Augustine) also ranked highly for Mexican cuisine, with Urban Back 40 earning high praise for their tacos.

Our readers voted overwhelmingly for Bella Vista Italian Restaurant, tucked away in Julington Creek just off 13N, as their favorite Italian restaurant. They received the most votes in the most categories!

Best Ambience, Best Appetizers, Best Al Fresco, and Best Cocktails! If you are dreaming of a trip to the Amalfi Coast, look no further than Bella Vista. The Chef and owner, Giovanni Prignano is from Salerno, Italy so the flavors are pure perfection. Like the house-made Caesar salad, with its subtle garlic deliciousness! Perhaps best known for their Signature Cacio e Pepe, fettuccine in a creamy sauce with black pepper, tossed table side in our signature cheese wheel! But choose any one of their entrées and you will be singing Amore!

People love the divine appetizers, (Burratta Bella Vista!), and the cocktails (yes - a pistachio martini!)

You will savor the sense of La Dolce Vita you feel when you experience a delicious meal with their sweet and friendly Italian-speaking staff paired with a delicious chianti! It will keep you coming back time and again.

Loyal patrons were showing them love in the voting comments… As Corrado said, “The food is absolutely delicious, with authentic flavors that transport you to Italy. The ambiance is warm and inviting, and the service is top-notch. The owner even takes the time to personally greet each table, adding a special, personal touch to the experience”.

In St. Augustine, you can’t beat The Reef for fine dinging oceanside, or for a fun family-friendly place enjoy the peace of the Intracoastal and the best low country boil at Aunt Kate’s. In downtown St. Augustine proper, voter's loved Collage. Try the Shrimp and Scallops All’ Imperiale Sautéed with artichokes, sundried tomatoes and peach brandy, finished with cream and fresh basil tossed with linguine. Oh yeah!

RECOMMENDATIONS TIM’S WINE MARKET ST. JOHNS

2022 Garzon Cabernet Franc Reserva - $22 What makes this wine so interesting is that it is from the country of Uruguay. Although this country does not have a long history of exporting wine, they have been producing it on a commercial scale since the 1870’s, and are the fourth largest producer in South America. Their industry was started, much like Argentine winemaking, by Italian and Basque immigrants who flocked to South America around that time.

This Uruguayan Cabernet Franc is crafted by Bodega Garzon, known for its LEED-certified winery and top-tier winemakers. The wine is fermented in concrete tanks and aged on lees in French oak. Decant for 30 minutes and serve at cellar temperature to enjoy its dark cherry, black raspberry, oolong tea, and bay leaf flavors. Ideal pairings include pasta Bolognese, skirt steak with chimichurri, or tea-smoked salmon.

2021 Sleight of Hand "The Spellbinder" - $35 For this incredible blend Cabernet Franc plays the lead role in a diverse ensemble. The wine is made by Trey Busch, who is a Washington State winemaker.

A blend of 42% Cabernet Franc, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and 10% Syrah from Washington's Walla Walla and Red Mountain AVAs. This wine, aged in a mix of oak tanks and neutral barriques, showcases rich fruit, with notes of bing cherries, cocoa, and roasted coffee. Decant for an hour before You will want to decant this wine for at least an hour before serving, as it is young and quite powerful. As soon as you pour the first glass, this wine explodes with notes of bing cherries, tangerine peel, cocoa powder, roasted coffee beans, clove and cardamom pods. On the palate it shows a deep core of fruit framed by polished tannins and relatively low acidity.

Serve with lean meats like filet mignon or smoked pork loin. Best enjoyed between 2024 and 2030.

St. Johns County Honors 101-Year-Old World War II Veteran Joe Shomo

Order of La Florida Awarded to Bill Dudley Longtime veterans' advocate Bill Dudley was honored with St. Augustine’s most prestigious award: the Order of La Florida. The award honors people over 55 for service to the community. Dudley, himself a veteran, serves as the chairman of St. Johns County's Veterans Council. He was instrumental in establishing the county’s Veterans Treatment Court and aids a number of other veterans' groups and causes. Dudley is only the 25th person St. Augustine has recognized with the Order of La Florida since its creation in 1975; it's capped at only 10 living recipients at a given moment.

A heartfelt ceremony on September 17 marked a tribute to a living piece of history, Mr. Joe Shomo, a 101-year-old World War II veteran and one of the last of his kind. The recognition event, held in the St. Johns County Administration Rotunda, celebrated his remarkable life, legacy, and service to the nation.

Mr. Shomo, who turned 101 on August 21, was honored with a Certificate of Recognition presented during the St. Johns County Board of Commissioners meeting. Family, friends, and local officials attended, and he was escorted by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office. His story was also commemorated through a video produced by the St. Johns County Office of Public Affairs.

Born on August 21, 1923, in South Fork, Pennsylvania, Joe Shomo was part of a generation that served in World War II and is now dwindling—a true embodiment of the term “last of his kind.” Raised in Derry, Pennsylvania, he developed a passion for baseball and basketball before attending the University of Indiana in Pennsylvania. His college years were interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army on May 24, 1943.

Specializing as a T5 radio repairman, Mr. Shomo provided critical technical support during World War II, including a deployment to France. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he pursued higher education and built a career with companies such as IBM, Mack Trucks, and Hamilton Oil. He also lived in various cities, including Baltimore and Jacksonville, before settling in St. Augustine in 1996.

Born in Williamston, N.C., William Dudley graduated from Williamston High School before joining the U.S. Air Force in January 1955. After completing Basic Training, he was accepted into the Officer Candidate School Program (OCS) and commissioned as an officer. He spent 10 years on active duty, primarily flying heavy cargo aircraft and serving as a maintenance officer, with deployments during multiple global crises. After transitioning to the Air Force Reserve, he retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Bill pursued higher education at East Carolina University, majoring in Industrial Management, and later earned a degree in Financial Management from Wake Forest University's Babcock School of Management. His 45-year aerospace career saw him rise to executive leadership, including roles as President and CEO of several Fortune 500 companies in the U.S., U.K., and Singapore. His career afforded him global travel and a deep appreciation for diverse cultures.

Motivated by his military and professional experiences, Bill is passionate about giving back to the community through volunteer work, driven by a desire to serve and help others.

Cadets from the St. Augustine High School Junior ROTC also attended to pay their respects to Mr. Shomo’s dedication and service.

Helping Our Heroes As long-time resident of the Northeast Florida, a retired member of the United States Air Force, and the current Military Outreach Director for the First Coast YMCA, I can honestly say that vast amount resources available to the military community in our region is absolutely astonishing. But for me, there was only one problem: I didn’t know they were there prior to taking on my role within the YMCA. During my 20 years of military service, all of my resources (mental health, physical health, medical, financial, etc.) were tied to the military installations I was attached to. Even after my retirement in 2020, the idea of seeing someone outside of my proverbial military circle seemed very foreign to me. I didn’t know about the abundance of resources available until I joined the First Coast YMCA’s Military Outreach Strategy and began networking with all of the amazing organizations. Our team’s mission is to provide, facilitate, and connect the military to community with the resources and programs needed to support our unique family.

Florida has the third highest veteran population in the country and with several military bases and facilities located in our local six-county region, those who have served and are currently serving (and their families) play an integral role in the fabric of Northeast Florida.

Supporting and serving our military community is an honor and a privilege that is fueled by the love and respect that we have for them.

The First Coast YMCA is designated as an Armed Services YMCA affiliate, which means we’re able to provide active-duty families with programs and services that otherwise would not be available in Northeast Florida. The First Coast YMCA has made service members, veterans and their families a priority. We offer a variety of free or low-cost programs to the military community, including discounted membership rates for individuals and families. We will also work with anyone on a payment plan that fits their budget, as we never want finances to be a barrier to living a healthy life.

We also recognize that connecting with other veterans or active-duty military can be vital, which is why we provide

interactive opportunities throughout the year in multiple locations. Our partnership with the Sierra Club and our Military Outdoor Adventures program gives local veterans, current service members, and their families the chance to explore nature on hikes throughout the region while creating supportive relationships and bonds with others in our military community. It’s an amazing group to be a part of!

Establishing those relationships and bonds is just as important for kids in military families, especially for those who have gone through the PCS (Permanent Change of Station) process and/or deployments. Our Operation Hero program is a free, 10-week after-school enrichment program offered to kids in grades 1-6 whose parents are active-duty military. The curriculum is designed to address the challenges related to frequent moves and family separations. We also offer Operation Little Learners and Operation Strong and Ready.

Operation Little Learners is a 13-week program for active-duty parents with children 18-months to 5 years of age. It is a parent and child program with a focus on teaching a pre-school age curriculum while connecting military families together. Operation Strong and Ready currently has two different versions. Our Veteran version is 8-weeks long and is focused on improving the physical and mental health of the veterans. Our Teen version of Operation Strong and Ready is a 12-week long program that focuses on developing leadership, communication, and team building skills through fitness.

All of our programs, including those mentioned above, have something in common: developing relationships and interpersonal connections. Additional opportunities to do so include our Summer Day Camp, as well as our overnight camp at our Camp Immokalee location in Keystone Heights, both of which we offer scholarships to military families. These are valuable offerings for families to build bonds with others, which we realize can be difficult when moving to a new community.

We’re able to provide these resources thanks to donations from the community and to VyStar Credit Union, who

is the Official Military Partner of the First Coast YMCA. They help us host our annual Operation Salute: Military Appreciation Back to School Bash, where we provide free back to school supplies to military families. Our supporters help ensure that we continue to provide these resources to the community and we’re actively exploring new and innovative ways to reach those who have served.
