FEBRUARY 2013 ~ St. Johns Magazine Dear Readers, At the end of last month I celebrated my seventeenth wedding anniversary! When my husband described our time together as “weird” I had to agree! We started out our married life living in South Korea, we were blessed with natural triplets, moved across the country, twice, experienced highs and lows we never expected and through all this our love has kept us together (as the old song goes). Love is powerful.

Love is also romance. The February issue is focused on love with our article on romantic places in St. Johns County.

Love is also giving. We proudly support the American Cancer Society’s Cattle Baron’s Ball that will help raise money for this important cause. (see details on page 12). Having lost my Mother, Faye Gaylord to Ovarian Cancer in February 2006, I dedicate this issue to her memory.

Photographer Mason Mozo (9 years old) is a third grader at Liberty Pines Academy. He is very involved in sports including football and soccer. He took the photograph of the St. Augustine Lighthouse on page 14 while at the Conch House during a Christmas party and it was recognized by the Lighthouse staff after his mother posted it on Facebook.

For ladies (or gentlemen) looking for a place to get all dolled up for a special evening, look no further than Envy Salon.

Located near Claude’s Chocolates off US 1, the stylists at Envy can have you ready for a night on the town, aka, a night in the Old Romance is in the air all over St. Johns County. From overnight at a Bed and Breakfast to watching the sunset, there is something for every budget.

St. Augustine is abundant with B & Bs, many of which offer special romance packages. The Cedar House Inn on Cedar St. has a Romance and Roses package which includes wine, chocolates, and a carriage ride. They also have honeymoon and anniversary specials.

Casa de Suenos Bed and Breakfast on Cordova Street offers five different “Dream” packages. These range from Sweet Morning Dreams, complete with robes, coffee mugs and a journal for keeping all the memories made at this over 100 year old house; to Bubbly Dreams , which includes champagne in engraved glasses, strawberries, rose petals, and a romantic CD to take home.

Also on Cordova is the Southern Wind B & B. Here, couples can splurge on the Romantic Rendezvous package. This comes with a carriage ride, lunch and dinner at two different local restaurants, and a professional massage at a nearby spa.

For those who prefer a beach setting, the Beachfront B & B on F Street is the answer. Their Romance Package contains a bottle of chilled Korbel champagne and an assortment of Godiva chocolates. They also offer a buildyour-own package with many different options to choose from. For couples who get bitten by the love bug, House of Sea and Sand on B Street has an elopement/small private wedding-on-the-beach package. There are numerous economical as well as romantic places to spend time with your honey in St. Johns County. The sunset at Vilano Beach Pier costs nothing but is a truly stunning place to experience the beauty of the sun setting against the backdrop of St. Augustine. Young and old can delight in the carousel in Davenport Park on San Marco Ave., which is still just a dollar.

All our beaches are wonderful places to take a stroll, enjoy a picnic, or even “pop the question”. From Guana Tolomato Matanzas Reserve with its wild, natural beauty, to Crescent Beach on Anastasia Island, sweethearts can find a quiet place to be “alone together”.

For couples looking for a place to “tie-the- knot”, Nocatee’s Crosswater Hall offers an ideal location. The Green is a perfect outdoor location for a wedding ceremony, and guests can move right into the Nocatee Room for the reception. Another longstanding wedding site is the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, as well as the Lodge and Club, both located on Ponte Vedra Blvd. For a wedding or for a dinner for two, The Reef, just north of Vilano Beach, is a romantic beach front restaurant. Here you can watch the waves break from indoors, or sit on the deck to hear the surf and feel the ocean breeze.

With so many choices, it may be hard to decide what to do for that special night. Fortunately, for those who live in St. Johns County, these opportunities are available year round. So, perhaps making date-night a regular thing is a good idea. It can be as simple as climbing the lighthouse, to a more elaborate night out at the Casa Monica. earing is one of our sensory systems. Let’s review what keeps us connected to our world through these systems. Our vision lets us see our family, friends, beautiful flowers and birds, as well as dangerous items, whether it is a chair in our path or a car coming towards us. Our feeling of touch keeps us from burning ourselves on a hot stove. Our sense of smell alerts us to pleasant fragrances such as a rose bloom or freshly baked cookies and protects and alerts us both from a stinky skunk or a forest fire. Our ability to taste needs no explanation.

I believe it is our sense of hearing that keeps humans connected. Our ability to communicate involves expressing and receiving information, ideas, and feelings. Hearing loss affects our quality of life. What happens if one cannot hear and understand conversation? This was studied by the National Council On the Aging (NCOA) by interviewing 4000 people. This group included hearing aid users, non-users and family members. NCOA concluded that hearing loss causes worry and anxiety, less social interaction, depression and paranoia. But treating hearing loss, specifically with hearing aids resulted in improved relationships with family members, improved self image, improved

February 1 to May 11, 2013 PICASSO Art & Arena St. Augustine Visitor Center; ABOUT THE EXHIBITION; PICASSO Art & Arena is an educational exhibition of graphic work and ceramics by the Spanish master showcasing 39 art pieces from the Fundación Picasso, Museo Casa Natal of Málaga, Spain. The exhibition includes original Picasso art pieces created between 1929 and 1961. The art was produced in different styles, techniques and media, providing unique insights into one of Picasso’s main themes: bullfighting. PICASSO Art & Arena is a tribute to the Spanish cultural and artistic traditions that were introduced to Florida by Juan Ponce de León in 1513 and St. Augustine by Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1565. This exhibit includes original Carrere and Hasting and McGuire drawings and blueprints, photographs, a copy of an 1885 map, and construction documents. Additionally, the exhibit highlights a group of artists who made the Hotel Ponce de Leon their seasonal home during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. First Coast History in St. Johns County The St. Augustine Lighthouse

f you’re a native Floridian, and local to the ‘First Coast’ region, you’re luckier than most. As a student you probably took more than a few field trips to historical sites that exist up and down the local coast.

Now as an adult, re-visit some of the most interesting historical sites in America with family and friends and impart on them the importance of a local past that literally changed the world.

One historical site literally stands above the rest. As you drive to St. Augustine, look east to the sea and you would be hard pressed to miss the St. Augustine Lighthouse. Painted in a black and white spiral scheme with a red ‘lantern’ at top, the St. Augustine Lighthouse stands 165 feet tall and has 219 steps. Completed by the US in 1874, the current lighthouse replaced an older coquina ‘watchtower’ that was approximately 52 feet tall and built by the Spanish in 1737. While in use for nearly 150 years, it collapsed from a shifting coastline and beach erosion in 1880.

For the area though, 1737 only scratches the surface. The history of St. Augustine dates from 1565, a full 172 years earlier that the coquina watchtower!

Records indicate that the Spanish built a wooden ‘sentry tower’ as soon as they settled the area, near where the current lighthouse now stands. Serving dual purposes,

the original ‘sentry tower’ not only helped Spanish galleons loaded with Mesoamerican silver and gold navigate to St. Augustine in preparation for a trans-Atlantic crossing, but warned of enemy ships approaching. In hindsight, everything seems clear, but did those original Spanish soldiers, sailors and settlers know of the strategic importance of their ‘sentry tower’? The fact is that over the next three centuries of turbulent history, the succession of towers and lighthouses had a part in changing the fortunes of the Spanish, British and French Empires.

mounting the largest, a ‘first order’ lens.

The complete assembly was huge, roughly 12 feet tall by 6 feet wide. With nearly 400 individual glass prisms set together, today the lens is able to project an intense beam of light up to 19 miles! Great distances were not always possible as lard oil and then kerosene were originally used to light the beacon. All that changed in 1936 and 1955 when the lighthouse was electrified and then fully automated.

As with all things, technology bypassed the need for a fully functioning lighthouse. Sadly neglected for a time, a painstaking effort to restore the grounds and tower began in 1980. Today the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum is a destination, with hundreds of thousands of tourists and school children visiting the grounds and museum annually. Whether it’s the personal challenge of climbing 219 steps without becoming winded, taking in the area from a bird’s eye view, finding out if the lighthouse is really haunted or just embracing the areas historical importance, a visit is a must.

by Dr. Peter Veling, DVM Last month’s article was about avoiding cheap cat vaccines in order to prevent Vaccine Associated Sarcomas. That will never happen to your cat, right? Unfortunately, that may be wrong. Yesterday, a client of mine brought in their neighbor’s cat that they love. He is a huge, beautiful, medium-haired orange tabby, 2 year-old cat, named Harley. (The name has been changed to protect the innocent.) Harley is a real people-oriented cat. He is the type of cat that every cat owner wants. Harley has a lump the size of a golf ball on his upper right shoulder. It is very hard. It is irregular in shape. It does not hurt.

It was first noticed by my client about two months ago. It got a little smaller initially but has grown larger recently.

This is a very sad situation. The actual owner of this cat thinks that the lump is being caused by fleas. The tumor should be removed surgically soon with a large amount of tissue around the tumor in every direction. If this surgery is not done by an experienced, aggressive surgeon, there will be another beautiful dead cat. It will grow back if it is not removed with a wide surgery.

When it grows back it will grow back faster and be more malignant. The first surgery is the best chance for Harley to survive. If he survives he will be normal.

The tumor is caused by adjuvant in cheap, killed vaccines for cats. “Killed” vaccines all contain adjuvant. The adjuvant travels from the injection site over weeks, months or years. As it travels it can cause a tumor at any time. There have been cats that have had this type of tumor develop three years after being vaccinated and not receiving another vaccine.

There is an agreement in veterinary medicine that vaccines are to be given in different places on a cat’s body. Right front leg is used for Feline Distemper Vaccine. Right hind leg is used for Feline Rabies Vaccine. Left hind leg is used for Leukemia Virus Vaccine. The veterinarian who vaccinated Harley did not follow the vaccine site protocol. It was vaccinated by a veterinary practice in nearby before being seen by my practice. Someone used the wrong vaccines in the wrong spot on this cat’s body. Harley may pay with his life. I hope that I will get the chance to save Harley. The frustrating part is that it is not up to me to save Harley. It is up to an owner that I have never met, who does not know me or how passionate I am in preventing this terrible disease. Ask your veterinarian what kind of vaccine they use for cats. Run away if it is killed.

e are so fortunate to live in an area with a rich tradition of both history and art. Now as part of St. Augustine’s 450th Commemoration, we are treated with Picasso Art & Arena, 39 art pieces from the Fundacion Picasso, Museo Casa Natal of Malaga, Spain from February through May. The exhibit centers around one of Picasso’s main themes: bullfighting, a theme to which he consistently reverted throughout his artistic career. Drama and tribute, fascination and freedom, balance and dynamism are combined in most unsuspected ways in these engravings and ceramics that show Picasso’s absolute originality inspired by one of his main obsessions.

The series of 11 lithographs of this exhibition, created between December 1945, and January 1946 present a simplification of a bull’s profile beginning with a realistic and traditional representation of the animal and gradually reducing the elements to a simplified form. The sequence demonstrates his innovative process and variety of creative options of working on one subject.

Other images in the exhibition offer different representations of the bull, ranging from the bull’s forehead to the whole bodied animal. In other images they are turned into winged, frolicking creatures. The bullfighting scenes are full

of drama and movement.

In addition, Picasso created illustrations for Honoré Balzac’s 1929 book ‘La chef d’oeuvre inconnu’, which capture the extreme tension of the bullfight.

Pablo Picasso was born on October 25th, 1881 in Malaga Spain. Son of a painter and drawing teacher. He attended the Art Academy La Longa in Barcelona in 1895.

Picasso’s imagery went through a constant process of metamorphosis. Each technique inspired a new direction and innovative outlet in his work. His early work in France began with the melancholic images of the Blue Period, followed by the cheerful Rose Period. After meeting his muse Fernande Oliver, he began his circus paintings (1905-1907). His well-known Demoiselles d’ Avignon marked the beginning of Cubism in 1907; a revolutionary art style which Picasso developed together with Georges Braque.

Picasso’s women played a paramount role in his artistic oeuvre. They were his models, his muses, and his lovers. While working on designs for Sergej Diaghilew’s Russain Ballet, Picasso met ballerina Olga Khoklova, who became his lover after Fernande. Around 1917, the artist was also working as a costume and stage designer for Jean Cocteau’s ballet Parade. Pablo Picasso’s works after 1918 cannot be clearly categorized in terms of

stlyle, since they contain realistic, classicist, sybolist, surreal and also abstract elements.

Picasso died in Mougins, France on April 8th, 1973 and is one of the greatest artists of our times.

The exhibit is housed at the recently renovated St. Augustine Visitor Center. Picasso Art & Arena is designed for families as well as for the art connoisseur. The exhibit offers guided tours led by specially trained guides who interact with the audience (in Spanish and English).

Photographic and video presentations feature the artist throught the eyes of his contemporaries and historians of his work.

Wall panels accompanied by photos of the artist, information about his life and work, along with other relavant, historic events at the time of his creations, are part of the exhibit fabric.
