Minnesota department of natural resources Q: With snow just around the corner, folks are getting ready to ride their snowmobiles. What are the educational requirements for the legal operation of a snowmobile? A: Current statute requires anyone born after Dec. 31, 1976 to take a safety-training course before operating a snowmobile on public lands or waters. Two types of courses are available. First, for those 11-years-old and older, an 11-hour introductory course designed for youth or the rider with little or no experience, which includes hands-on training. Second, for those 16-years-old and older, an independent study CD-based course where students learn at home. Once they have successfully completed their courses, students follow a path by age to receive a certificate of completion from the DNR. Both these courses show students the most common causes of snowmobile accidents in Minnesota, and how to avoid them. Volunteers teach classes across the state. Information regarding snowmobile certification classes can be found on the DNR's website at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/vehicle/snowmobile.

Stevie Ersland to begin internship in hospital massage therapy course by Randy Carlson Stevie Ersland owns You Knead Therapy in Byron and also teaches massage therapy at the Minnesota School of Business. This month Stevie begins yet another challenge in her career as she starts a hospital based massage therapy course/internship through the Mayo Clinic. Stevie is one of nine massage therapists who will begin working in St. Marys and Methodist Hospitals and the Mayo Clinic, along side clinic massage therapists. Mayo currently has three in house massage therapists and another who focuses on outpatient massage therapy. "I am looking forward to the internship," said Stevie. Massage therapists from around the country will be among those participating in the internship. A co-worker and mentor at the Minnesota School of Business recommended Stevie for the program. She has already completed three weeks of online work and 40 hours of classroom time at Mayo. The next phase, which begins November 12, will allow her to work with a Mayo massage therapist for a 25 hour period. The program is limited to 12 students and offered twice a year. Stevie said the hospital internship will give her a different experience in massage therapy since she will be working with people who have suffered injuries and are on different medications. "With someone who might have been injured, different positioning for massage therapy is important," said Stevie. They will learn how to utilize massage therapy and incorporate that with medicine in a hospital atmosphere. According to Stevie, there is more of a demand for massage therapists in the hospital setting. "I'm excited to be in the first class," said Stevie. “This will give me a different perspective of massage therapy in a health care setting.”

Librarian Bonnie Adams retires Had you always wanted to be a librarian? Yes. I loved books and the people that worked in libraries. When I was a high school sophomore at John Marshall in Rochester, I was selected to work in the library with two great librarians who taught me library skills. I worked in the high school library for the next three years and perfected my library skills and at the beginning of my senior year I was thinking about a future career and decided to talk with the librarians about being a librarian. They told me I had the right aptitude to be a librarian so I decided to pursue a library degree at Mankato State University. Do you ever think you would be a librarian for 39 years? Yes I did. But, I did not know what type of library I would serve. Over the past 39 years I have worked in 6-8. K-12, 7-12 schools, Arrowhead Regional Library System in Wisconsin, Dodge Center Library Board member, and a public library. I feel I am one of the lucky ones who was able to pursue my career for 39 years. What do you like best about your job? Seeing all of our patrons on a regular basis

and helping them find the right book and teaching new skills. I really like meeting new people who have just moved to the Kasson area and know the value of a library and its services. Best experiences here in Kasson? Working for and being supported by the Library Board of Trustees and the Friends of the Kasson Library. These two groups have believed in me and my staff and allowed us to try new ideas to better reach over 11,500 people in our service area. Biggest disappointment? The lack of a larger facility for the KM library service area during my time as Director of Library Services. This community wants and needs a library that will match their needs today and in the future. Library supporters need to advocate for the library and have their 15 second speech ready to inform those who do not know what a gem we are and all of the services we provide. What are you going to miss the most? Patrons, Library staff, Library Board and the Friends of the Library and their friendship over the past 8 1/2 years working at Kasson Public Library.

The K-M Care & Share Auction is a great opportunity to help people in need in the Kasson-Mantorville area. This year the auction will be held at Events by Daniel's, Saker & Schmitz beginning at 5 p.m. with a spaghetti and meatball dinner followed by the live auction at 6 p.m. To find out more go to www.kmcareandshare.com. Pictured are auctioneers Charlie Sinnwell (at the podium) and Kevin Maring looking for bidders on a product being held up by 2011 Kasson Ambassador Jake Riess.

Mark Brissette of Byron was this week's Kasson State Bank football contest winner with two incorrect picks. Mark wins the $15 cash prize from the Kasson State Bank. The two games Mark missed were the Indiana win at home over Iowa and Pittsburgh come from behind win at the New York Giants. A Nebraska win at Michigan State and Tampa Bay win on the road over Oakland are games many entrants missed. Surprisingly, quite a few people picked K-M to win over Faribault Friday night. This week's contest will include Friday night first round state football tournament games. See page 10A of the Shopper for details.

Á November comes from the Latin word root “novem”, which means nine. It was originally the 9th month in the Roman Calendar. Á November 5th, 1959 the National Football league was formed with eight teams: the Houston Oilers, New York Titans, Buffalo Bills, Boston Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, Dallas Texans, Oakland Raiders, and Denver Broncos. Á On November 5th 1935, Parker Brothers introduced the game Monopoly to the world. Á The infamous Berlin Wall began to come down on November 9, 1989.

As our Armed Forces serve to protect our freedom abroad, we’re reminded of the sacrifice made by so many brave soldiers before them. On Veterans Day, we pause to recognize and thank all of the veterans who have served our country. We are eternally grateful for their dedication and service.

Kasson State Bank will be closed on Monday, November 12 in honor of Veterans Day.

I think that Kasson is a great place to live. There are a number of organizations that help make it so, and I want to tell you about one. The Kasson Chamber of Commerce is an organization made up of people who have businesses in this community and want to keep this town as vital as it is and insure growth in the future. I think you would be surprised at the number of events that involve the Chamber. They help pay for the lit Christmas decorations that line the main streets during the holiday season. They help sponsor The Care and Share Auction, which this year will take place on November 15th at Events by Daniel’s, Saker & Schmitz. As in the past, the event will start with a dinner featuring spaghetti and meatballs beginning at 5:00 p.m. with the live auction beginning at 6:00 p.m. The cost will be $10.00 for adults and children under 12 are $6.00. The proceeds go to those in need. The Chamber sponsors Kasson Downtown Christmas with fun activities for all, including cookie decorating, coloring and ornament making, with the highlight being the special appearance of the reindeer. All of this will be available in town on December 8th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Make sure to plan this as a family activity as there will be fun for all ages. It isn’t just Christmas. The Chamber sponsors the Easter Egg Hunt and Dollars for Scholars scholarships in the spring, and there is also bingo and the Kasson Ambassador program during the Festival in the Park in the summer. Just as important are the contributions made by these businesses to other organizations in town. Each year businesses are contacted by many to donate to worthy causes from school athletic organizations to fundraisers for individuals and families that need help. These members of the community always respond with monies or in-kind donations. Keep them in mind when you see their names in the list of donors or on a sports program, especially the next time you plan your shopping trips. The Kasson Chamber continues to thank you for your ongoing loyalty to local businesses which are needed to provide the diverse number of professional services, personal services and shopping varities that Kasson has to offer.

K-M Care & Share celebrating its 30th year! Ask any resident of Dodge County about K-M Care & Share and most of them could tell you about the organization and its fundraising efforts, but do they realize that this organization has been serving the K-M area for 30 Years? This year marks the 30th anniversary of the birth of K-M Care & Share. In a world where foundations are here today and gone tomorrow – K-M Care & Share has proven the test of time. We thought it only fitting to sit down with the current K-M Care & Share Auction chair, Lisa Peterson to find out what this milestone means for the organization. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the birth of K-M Care & Share. What does that mean to you as the Auction Lisa Peterson, chair? Auction Chair I will say that in all the hustle and bustle of planning this year’s event I was stunned to realize that this marks our 30th year. Our earliest records go back to 1982 which would indicate when K-M Care & Share came to be an “official” charity and driving force in this community. As the Auction Chair, it fills me with pride that we (the auction coordinators past and present) have been able to keep this fundraising effort alive and thriving for so long. Some might say that it’s a little sad that the need for such an organization exists - I don’t think of it that way. Instead I like to focus on the fact that over those 30 years there have been generations of donors who have supported this effort and believed in helping their fellow neighbors. As long as our donors continue to support our efforts, we will strive to help as many of our neighbors as possible. Over the past 30 years, I can’t even fathom how many thousands of citizens we have been able to help. What are some of the significant changes K-M Care & Share has experienced over those 30 years? While I have only been Auction Chair for the past six of those years, I have heard stories of the humble beginnings of the K-M Care & Share organization and how it all started as just a handful of local business people who gathered in the basement of the Kasson American Legion with items they had made or purchased, auctioned them off to each other and raised a few hundred dollars here and there. At the time, I’m sure none of them imagined how far this idea could go and how large it would become. Today, we have moved to a much larger venue with hundreds of items up for auction and raising on average $25,000-$30,000/year. We owe our eternal gratitude to those founding members in the basement of the Legion for their generosity. Without their kindness and concern for others we wouldn’t be the driving force we are today. What do you attribute to K-M Care & Share’s long running success? Without hesitation, it’s the people. The people of this community – those who donate, those who bid, those who volunteer and those who do all three. Every year there are countless moments where I am struck with awe by the generosity of this community. Charlie (Sinnwell) and I are humbled to be a small part of it and be surrounded by such talented, cre-

ative and generous people. They say every Auction chair leaves their mark, what is the mark you have made to the K-M Care & Share story? I think every Auction Chair over the years has “left their mark” in some way, shape or form. I came into this job with no experience (only having attended the auction one time) and a passion to serve. I would say my biggest concern at that time was breaking some of the molds or ideas that people had about K-M Care & Share. So often I would hear that K-M Care & Share was “the Christmas charity”, that statement really started to get to me because I wanted people to understand that while, yes, we did package holiday gifts and meals for families we also provided assistance year round. The first step I took in trying to break that mindset was by branding ourselves. Up until this point we didn’t have a “face” to our name. While people knew of us, there was no logo or branding to speak of that when you saw it you would immediately think: K-M Care & Share. So we set to work producing brochures with our signature “paper people”. The brochures focused on our mission and provided answers to the most commonly asked questions by donors. While many people had heard of us and had been supporting us for years, we would still field the same handful of questions from year to year so it became apparent that we needed a way to communicate with our current donors as well as any potential donors. The second phase was to realize that, like it or not, we are living in a digital age and when people have questions - the first place they turn is the internet. We needed to have a digital presence and with the help of a former K-M resident (Nicholas Dibble) we were able to create a website that covered everything in the initial brochure and so much more. Nick showed us how we could feature our auction items so that donors could be recognized and bidders could preview the merchandise prior to the event. What is your hope or vision for the future of K-M Care & Share? Initially I would say my hope is that someday my four children will take on the task of Auction planning (laughing). Already they have far more experience than I did coming into this job and over the years there has been no shortage of program-related jobs for them. As an organization, my hope is that we can continue to have great success for another 30 years. How we plan to do that is by staying current, moving with the times, communicating with our donors and recipients to identify needs and provide answers to their questions. On the business side of things, I believe we need to expand our horizons and update our policies and procedures to reflect the current size and scope of this program. Encouraging involvement by more interested community members will ensure that we move into the future as a vibrant, healthy and cohesive organization. This year’s K-M Care & Share Auction will take place at EVENTS in Kasson, Thursday, November 15th, 2012 starting at 5 p.m. The event will feature live and silent auctions, a raffle, dessert samples and much more, please plan to join us!

Deanna Kay’s now The Hair Barn

C.O. BROWN AGENCY, INC.

The KoMet

One day a customer complimented the barn wood trim around Deanna Kay’s Hair Styling remodeled salon in Dodge Center. She suggested owner Deanna Kvam rename the business The Hair Barn. Deanna liked the idea, especially since the barn wood came from a barn on her father’s farm. Deanna Kay’s Hair Styling became The Hair Barn three weeks ago. Located on Main Street in Dodge Center, Deanna said the name change has been a little confusing for some customers. She did have one ask if she moved the business out of town with the name change. “No way,” she said. Deanna has been cutting hair for 33 years, 19 in her own shop. She made the move from West Concord to Dodge Center eight years ago. “This is always what I wanted to do and I still enjoy it,” said Deanna. Jesse Phelps started recently at The Hair Barn and is a booth renter from Deanna. They do hair cuts, razor cuts, styling, color, highlighting, perms, tanning and waxing. They also sell a variety of hair care products. Monday from 9-2 Jesse offers $10 haircuts. The building itself has an interesting history. It has been anything from a jail to a municipal library. Deanna said upstairs there are still bars on some of the windows. Deanna could have possibly named her business the Jail Break Salon or Book Rack Hair Styling, but the Hair Barn is a little more down to earth and does have a special connection.
