City of Kasson, Minnesota Statement of Net Assets Proprietary Funds December 31, 2012 and 2011

Minnesota department of natural resources Q: I understand that two peregrine falcons have returned to a nest box on top of the Bremer Bank Building in St. Paul. Is this the same pair that was there last year? A: The female is the same as last year, but unfortunately biologists have not seen the male, Sota, who was fledged 18 years ago from a nest near the Minnesota River. We suspect Sota died over the winter. He and his partner, Jill, had spent nine years raising young together. Jill is 10 years old and was fledged from a box at the high bridge in St. Paul. This will be her 10th year at this box. She and Sota raised 28 chicks together. A new male started coming around and Jill has laid three eggs. Biologists have not been able to identify the male yet. A live camera inside the nest box was paid for by donations to the nongame checkoff. Now the public can watch them lay their eggs and raise their young in real-time. Watch them live: http://webcams.dnr.state.mn.us/falcon/

May 10th & 11th, 2013 City-Wide Garage Sales

May 8, 2013

Garage Sale Success Tips It's prime garage sale season. Those interested in conquering the clutter once and for all and offering items to willing buyers can improve their chances of success by following some key tips. Individuals have different reasons for holding garage sales. Some people are moving and want to thin out items before packing. Others are looking to make a little extra spending cash. Still others simply enjoy the socialization garage sales provide.

Garage sales can garner a person a good profit. However, if the goal is to make as much money as possible on high-end goods, such as antiques or collectibles, a garage sale is probably not the best place to do this type of selling. Instead, choose a reputable online bidding site or advertise specialty merchandise in the local newspaper. Those who want to clear out their home, cull through the excess clutter and make a few dollars along the way will find that

20c

garage sales can be the ideal way to do so ... if done the right way. Otherwise they can be a waste of time. Here are some pointers to maximize success. • Wait until there are enough items to fill a few tables and spread larger merchandise on the driveway or lawn. Individuals will be drawn to a sale that looks like it has a good quantity of items to pick through. • Think about a joint garage sale. Getting together with neighbors enables a larger amount of sale items and may attract a bigger crowd. • It's better to have the sale on one main day than stretch it over two or three days. Weekends provide the most action, particularly Saturday. Avoid long weekends to hold a garage sale because most people go out of town. • Garage sale visitors tend to be early birds. Therefore, schedule the sale for the early morning into the afternoon. An 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. sale will enable a good number of people to make it to the sale. • Set up the merchandise the night before and house it in the garage or another locked area. Simply move it out onto the display tables before the sale. • Realistically set prices. Remember, a garage sale is an opportunity to unload

items quickly. Don't expect to earn what was originally paid for each item. Be prepared to part with things for a steal. • Advertise the garage sale in the local newspaper several days in advance. Some people like to post signs in high-traffic areas as well, such as traffic intersections or by the entrance to the local supermarket. • Have easy-to-read signs that mark the way to the sale, including the address and any directional markers. Balloons and streamers can help make the signs more visible. Be sure drivers can read the signs from the car. Writing that is too small will be ineffective. Keep the signs brief: GARAGE SALE DATE ADDRESS • It is best to host the sale in the front yard where passersby can easily see the items on display. Garages are ideal for poor weather conditions but are more difficult to scan for possible treasures. The backyard should only be used as a last resort because it is the least visible. • Remember that the goal is to sell the most items so they don't have to be packed back up and either put inside or taken to the dump. Be able to part with items for less than originally marked. Consider slashing prices as the end of the sale draws nearer.

The K-M Lions Club will once again be having their annual rummage sale in K-M Lions Park, from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday 7 a.m.-noon.

You ask the Senior question

We find the Savvy answer Assistive Technologies That Help Elderly Seniors Stay at Home Dear Savvy Senior, What types of new home technologies can you recommend to help me keep tabs on my elderly mother? She lives alone, about an hour’s drive from me, and I worry about her safety. Concerned Daughter Dear Concerned, Helping an aging parent remain independent and living in their own home has become a little easier in recent years, thanks to a host of new and improved assistive technology products. Here are some top rated options you should know about. Medical Alerts If you’re worrying about your mom falling and needing help, one of the most frequently used products over the years for seniors living alone is a medical alert device – also known as a personal emergency response system, or PERS. These devices provide a wearable “SOS” button – typically in the form of a necklace pendent or bracelet – and a base station that connects to the home phone line. At the press of a button, your mom could call and talk to a trained operator through the system’s base station receiver which works like a powerful speaker phone. The operator will find out what’s wrong, and will notify family members, a neighbor, friend or emergency services as needed. If you’re interested in this, there are dozens of services to choose from including the Philips Lifeline (lifelinesys.com, 800-380-3111) which is the most widely used medical alert service in the U.S. and costs around $35 per month. Phillips also offers a new Auto Alert option (for $48 per month) that has fall detection sensors in the SOS button that can automatically summon help without your mom ever having to press a button. This is helpful because many seniors after a fall become confused or disoriented and forget to press the button. If you’re interested in a more budget-friendly option, consider an unmonitored medical alert like the new VTech CareLine Home Safety Telephone System for $120 (vtechphones.com), which doesn’t require professional monitoring services, therefore has no monthly monitoring fees. Or, to deal with falls or health emergencies that happen outside the home, there are mobile-alert GPS products now available that work anywhere. To find these, see GreatCall.com, MobileHelpNow.com and PhilipsLifelineGoSafe.com. Monitoring Systems Another more sophisticated technology for keeping tabs on your mom is with a home monitoring system. These systems will let you know whether she is waking up and going to bed on time, eating properly, showering and taking her medicine. They work through small wireless sensors (not cameras) placed in key locations throughout the home. The sensors will track her movements, learning her daily activity patterns and routines, and will notify you or other family members via text message, email or phone if something out of the ordinary is happening. For instance, if she went to the bathroom and didn’t leave it could indicate a fall or other emergency. You can also check up on her patterns anytime you want through the system’s password-protected website. And for additional protection, most services offer SOS call buttons as well that can be placed around the house, or worn. Some good companies that offer these services are BeClose (beclose.com, 866-574-1784), which runs $399 or $499 for the sensors, plus a $69 monthly service fee if paid a year in advance. And GrandCare Systems (grandcare.com, 262-338-6147), which adds a fantastic social component – through a senior-friendly computer – to go along with the activity monitoring. GrandCare leases for $150 to $300 per month. Medication Management If you want to make sure your mom is keeping up with her medications, there are medication management devices you can now rent, that will dispense her medicine on schedule, provide constant reminders, and even notify you if her medicine is not taken. Two products that offer this are MedMinder (medminder.com, 888-633-6463), which rents for $40 per month, and the Philips Medication Dispensing Service (managemypills.com, 888-632-3261) that costs $75/month.

New plant cultivars appeal, but will they perform? Paging through plant catalogs in search of exciting new cultivars is a time-honored tradition during Minnesota’s long winter. But Kathy Zuzek, a University of Minnesota Extension horticultural educator, advises: “Before investing, find out if the cultivars you desire have been shown to perform well in Minnesota gardens.” Nurseries and catalog retailers should provide customers with the best performing plant selections for the climate and other growing conditions of the customer’s location, but the trend in horticulture is to move new plants onto the market in the shortest possible time frame. “In the blink of an eye, newly introduced cultivars disappear from garden centers and catalogs and new plants take the limelight,” says Zuzek. This creates some problems. Cultivars—plants developed for distinctive traits that set them apart from other plants in the same species—are now introduced to Minnesota gardeners from around the world. When rushed to the market, the plant's performance in Upper Midwest gardens might skip their turn in evaluation trials. Purchasing inexpensive, fast-maturing, un-trialed cultivars might be worth the risk. You could get lucky and discover a new favorite plant. Zuzek warns that it is much riskier to buy expensive un-trialed shrubs and trees that take years to reach maturity. If newly introduced cultivars are displaced quickly by even newer cultivars, they might prove to be a good performer in our Minnesota gardens after they have already been removed from nursery catalogs. Alas, you’ll never know what could have been. The emphasis on the new and exciting may also eliminate older cultivars from the nursery trade. What if older cultivars that have proven their long-term landscape value are replaced with un-trialed cultivars that fall short of the mark? Zuzek suggests that wise gardeners can help solve these problems by asking "What's good?" rather than "What's new?" Need help finding out “what’s good”? Here are some of Zuzek’s suggestions: Look to land grant universities and affiliated Extensions. The University of Minnesota is home to research programs that develop cultivars of turfgrasses, herbaceous perennials, ornamental shrubs and trees, and fruit crops for the Upper Midwest. These cultivars are highlighted on Extension’s Minnesota Hardy website (www.extension.umn.edu/go/1101). Information on garden plant selection can also be found on Extension’s Garden website www.extension.umn.edu/Garden. Ask an Extension Master Gardener. County-based Master Gardeners regularly educate in their communities, so don’t hesitate to approach them when you see them. You can also ask online (www.extension.umn.edu/go/1100) and receive an answer within approximately 48 hours. Visit the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum to view plants that grow in Minnesota’s hardiness zones. The arboretum (www.arboretum.umn.edu) is home to thousands of ornamental cultivars of annuals, herbaceous perennials, ornamental shrubs and trees, and vegetables and fruits. Also, check out the Plant Info section (plantinfo.umn.edu) on the arboretum website. Take advantage of the information available from plant evaluation programs. The All-America Selections program (www.all-americaselections.org) and the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Plant Evaluation program (http://bit.ly/yF3YyU) evaluate and identify garden plants for superior performance. The horticultural garden at the West Central Research and Outreach Center in Morris, Minn. is home to one of the 47 All-America Selections test sites.

business directory JEFF REHWALDT IN 14TH YEAR OF TREE MOVING BUSINESS Last year at this time Jeff Rehwaldt would have already been busy moving trees. This year he is just now thinking about taking his tree mover out of storage. Spring fever is at a peak and Jeff, owner of Jeff's Tree Moving LLC., of Kasson, is anxious to get out and dig in the dirt. Tree moving has been a good change of pace for Jeff in his 30th year working at IBM. "I like the idea of running a tree moving machine, helping other people and maybe making a little money, too. It's a good change of pace from my indoor job," said Jeff. He likes to be outdoors and this business provides that opportunity. His tree mover is mounted on the heavy duty chassis of a Schwan's Ice Cream truck. He has moved pines, hickory, maple ash and more over the years. Pines are most common because the DNR and Pheasants Forever have provided them for cover and habitat. They are generally planted close together when young and some need to be moved as they grow, so that's where Jeff and his business come into the picture. Jeff can easily move a tree with a 5" trunk diameter. Tree moving is not an exact science, but it is necessary to follow a good procedure to insure the tree has the highest percentage for survival. Landscapes, access and grade all affect success but Jeff has seen just about every situation possible in his first 13 years of business. The tree should be centered in the dirt ball and watered regularly....not over-watered. He charges by the tree plus mileage. He believes that is the fairest way to deal with a customer. He does not have a nursery, but does have several sources available where a customer can purchase trees. Jeff can move one or two trees in the yard for ornamental value or help build a better wind break with dozens of trees, depending on the customers needs. If that nice tree is right where you want a new shed and you'd rather have it 'over there', no problem. "It's a fun change of pace for me" said Jeff, who never settles for anything less than doing a good job for the customer. If interested in having trees moved or new trees planted give Jeff a call for an estimate at (507)634-4343 and leave a message during the day. Jeff and his tree moving machine can handle most residential and commercial tree moving/planting needs.

The Mantorville Restoration House will open for the season on Saturday May 18th in conjunction with Mantorville’s Spring Fling celebration. The 1856 Restoration House was acquired and restored by the Mantorville Restoration Association (MRA) in 1963. Furnished in the style typical of a late 1800’s residence, it is now open to the public for tours during summer months. Guests will also receive a guided tour of the two story log home directly behind the Restoration House. This was the home of the cooper (barrel maker) for the Mantorville Brewery, and showcases a large display of artifacts related to the brewing industry. It is furnished in a style typical of a log home of the mid -1800’s. In addition, the limestone Carriage House on Clay Street will be open for self guided viewing of farm related displays. May is National Preservation Month, and preservation organizations across the country will take the time to celebrate history and historic places. This year’s theme is “See! Save! Celebrate!” This theme works to shine a spotlight on each community's distinct historic resources, and to encourage visitors and residents to see these places, work to save them, and celebrate their vital role in the community. The Restoration House is located at 540 North Main Street. Tours will be available Tuesday – Sunday from 1-5pm through October, with a small donation requested. For more information or to book group tours, please call 507-635-5140 or 507-273-8499. Visit us for an adventure in nostalgia, and for pleasant memories of the past.
