Habitat for Humanity Home Build Ann (Castner) Thompson looking forward to having a new place to call home! by Randy Carlsen Last winter Ann (Castner) Thompson dropped her daughter Alex off at a friend’s house located adjacent to the future Habitat for Humanity home build lot in Mantorville. Alex, 14, suggested to her mom that she put in an application for the home build. Lo and behold the Thompson family, consisting of Ann, Alex (14), Riley (11) and Sam (6) were selected for the second home build in Dodge County. “That was a nice surprise. The kids are really excited, too,” said Ann, a single mom. The Dodge County Chapter of Thrivent for Lutherans is providing 55% of the financial support for the home located at 704 Sixth Street West in Mantorville. Jeremy Hunze, financial associate for Thrivent in Kasson, Ann Castner Thompson with children Sam, Riley (in front) joined the organization and Alex in Mantorvilleʼs Riverside Park, not far from the four years ago. “I like the place they will call home by the end of the year. Photo by fact that they are faith Karla Johnson. based and the organization is conservative in nature,” said Jeremy. Another aspect of Thrivent Jeremy can appreciate is that they give back to the community. They do that in a big way by funding a percentage of the home build. There is also a little sweat equity in the form of volunteer work that goes into the project. Nationwide Thrivent Financial for Lutherans awards grants to Thrivent affiliates. Thrivent also helped finance the home build for the first home built in Kasson. “I like what Habitat for Humanity stands for,” said Jeremy. “They help families with a need and show them how to be responsible homeowners.” Ann Castner graduated from K-M High School in 1991. She attended RCTC on a full scholarship with the intent of becoming an elementary school teacher. Ann met someone while going to school and they were married six months later. “I did things a little backward and should have finished school before getting married,” said Ann. The couple had three children and Dodge County agent for Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, were married 17 years Jeremy Hunze, addresses the crowd attending the Mantorville before divorcing. divorce that was tough on her and the kids. As a result of the divorce Ann had to file bankruptcy. She and her children had to move out of their home and rented a home in Kasson. Going through such a difficult time in her life Ann said, "I always tried to be positive." Ann had a full schedule before the divorce and now had even more on her plate with full responsibility for three children. She was taking classes at RCTC to earn an RN degree, was working at Prairie Meadows Senior Living in Kasson and being a parent to three young children. “There was not a lot of free time,” said Ann with a smile. The RN program was scheduled to be completed in two years. Ann however was required to attend classes around family and work and was attended school considerably longer than that. In December of last year she passed the boards. Along with work, school and family Ann had to find time for 200 sweat equity hours and assist with the home build. She said family donated 50 hours and that helped a great deal. Ann presently works days and nights and has worked out a schedule with Mayo so she does not have to work the 3-11 p.m. shift to be able to be at home with the children. Once they get settled into the new home Ann said she would like to go back to school next fall and get a masters degree so she has more opportunities for advancement. “We are happy about moving into the new house,” said Ann. “It’s going to be nice to get back to a home in Mantorville we can call our own.” Habitat for Humanity home builds are not considered a handout. The partner family purchases the home and pays off the mortgage with no interest rate (biblical financing). Along with the 200 hours of “sweat equity” (for a single parent) the family must also complete classes to learn about indoor and outdoor maintenance, budgeting and credit, crime safety, fire prevention, being a good neighbor and more. “The kids and I have gone through some really dark times. We have stuck together and can now see a light at the end of the tunnel, which is getting closer and closer every day,” said Ann. Welcome home Thompson family! Saturday, December 8 there will be a dedication for the Ann Thompson family home build at 3:00 p.m. “That is going to be a good day for us,” smiled Ann. For Jeremy Hunze this project is one of the big reasons he chose to become an agent at Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

Kasson Municipal Liquor Store benefits community 63 years!

December 9, 1949 a municipal liquor dispensary was established by adoption of Ordinance #402. Sixty three years later the Kasson Municipal Liquor Store remains a success story that has benefitted Advertise in the Dodge County Independent members of the community-even if they do not patronize the business. The Kasson Municipal Liquor Store is a perfect example of a city Kasson Liquor Store clerk business that gives back to the community. Profits benefit many different areas. "We do Jodi Benda and manager a lot of good things for the community with the profits," said liquor store manager Cathy Cathy Pletta show one of Pletta. the select gift boxes for Going back to 1983 here is a sampling of what some of the profits were used for: 1983- sale. The gift boxes are $50,000 for sewer collection system construction; 1989-$40,000 for a new grader; 1991- something new the liquor $35,000 for a new Pierce fire truck; 1992-$20,000 for public bathrooms, $15,500 dedicat- store is selling this holiday ed to economic development and $15,000 for a softball field; 1994-$50,000 toward pur- season. chase of a dump truck; 1998-$10,000 toward purchase of a police vehicle; 2000-$75,000 for liquor store remodeling; 2003-$30,781 toward Main Street improvement project; and most recently in 2010 $10,000 went for LED Christmas lights and $40,000 for play equipment at Lions Park. Charitable donations are also made to Kasson Festival In the Park and K-M Care & Share just to name a couple. Cathy insists it is always a challenge to do business competing with the large volume and chain stores. However, she feels the Kasson Municipal Liquor Store has competitive pricing in most areas, has a good variety of beer, wine and liquor and is convenient for local residents. A first this holiday season is the offering of pre-made and custom gift baskets for purchase. Cathy is in tune with customer suggestions for stocking products not on the shelf and is always open to new ideas. She said it is important to keep as much variety as possible on the shelves so when something isn't selling, it's off the shelf and a new product takes its place. The good news about the Kasson Municipal Liquor Store is even if you don't frequent the business you benefit indirectly because profits stay in the community.

Stopping the spread of pertussis Adults need to get vaccinated •  Patient Education from the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians

Pertussis, known to most people as whooping cough, is back. Older generations remember the disease, in the era before widespread immunization, as a scourge among infants and small children that caused spasms of rapid, short, barky coughs interrupted by gasps for air. The swelling in the windpipe and voice box of the victims gave a characteristic "whoop" sound to the inhalation from which the disease gets its common name. "Whooping cough would last for weeks. There was no effective treatment, and once in a while the swelling would close off the windpipe or voice box completely, said Dr. Glenn Nemec, a family physician in Monticello, MN. "Unless the child was actually in the hospital when this happened, it frequently resulted in death." That's why the pertussis vaccine was hailed as a near miracle. For many decades, the disease all but disappeared. Unfortunately, that is no longer the situation. According to the Minnesota Department of Health, there have been 3,950 cases of pertussis reported in the state this year. That's the highest number since the 1940s, before the vaccine was developed. So why is it back? Where did it come from again? The original vaccine was created using crushed pertussis bordtedella bacteria injected into the muscle in a series of 5 shots over the first Shears of life. It was very effective, but it caused a lot of sore arms, fevers, and occasionally more serious reactions. Over the years, the vaccine has been refined so that there are fewer side effects. Today, anything more than a day or so of mild soreness at the injection site and/or a lowgrade fever, are almost unheard of. The bad news - recent evidence shows that the modern vaccine starts to wear off as soon as Shears after the last dose. By age 15, a person only has 50% protection from the pertussis germ. and the protection becomes less and less each year. This means that adults can get pertussis fairly easily. Fortunately, (or perhaps unfortunately) adults usually do not get very sick from pertussis. Sometimes they will get the "100 day cough" where they feel like they will split a gut, but mostly it acts like a mild bronchitis and most patients never even get sick enough to seek care. If they do go in, the symptoms are often so mild that pertussis is never considered as a possibility. These adults then go out and cough on infants and children who are too young to have completed a full series of shots, and now you have outbreaks of potentially fatal whooping cough in infants and children, just like in the "old days." "On a positive note, supportive care for pertussis is much more advanced than in the past which means death due to the disease is very rare," said Dr. Nemec. "That doesn't mean pertussis shouldn't be taken seriously. It's not unusual for patients to be hospitalized due to the illness and some even need to be put on ventilators (breathing machines)." Today, there are rapid tests for the germ which help detect pertussis in patients. There are also antibiotics that can decrease a person's chance of spreading the disease, but according to Dr. Nemec, antibiotics help little, if at all, to treat the symptoms of pertussis. "Antibiotics are prescribed to decrease the chance of epidemics and they are effective for that,” said Dr. Nemec They generally don't help a patient feel better, but they do help make them less contagious." Experts have also learned that booster doses of pertussis vaccines for adults replenish their immunity to the disease. So what can the average person do to help? First, have your family physician check your shot record to see if you have had a pertussis shot in the last 10 years. It is almost always given as a combination vaccine with your tetanus shot (a Tdap vaccine), but was not routinely used until about five years ago. This is especially important if you are around infants or young children. Unvaccinated adults often unknowingly spread the disease to kids around them. By getting a vaccine when you are older, you are actually protecting others. If your last tetanus shot didn't have pertussis in it. get a booster that does, even if you only had the shot a year or two ago Second, if you have kids. make sure they are all up to date on their shots. Third, if you have a severe cough, a cough that comes in spasms (cough 'attacks' interspersed with cough free intervals), or a cough that lasts over a week and is getting worse or not getting any better, see your family physician and ask about pertussis. If you have had close exposure for a prolonged time to someone who has a positive test for pertussis, you should also call your doctor, as you may be a candidate for preventive antibiotics. "It is not likely we will ever exterminate pertussis," said Dr. Nemec. "But if everyone gets their shots, watches for the symptoms and gets in early for testing, we can relegate whooping cough to the rare disease file."

Single-Family Housing Loans Loans are available through USDA Rural Development for lowincome families to buy, build, rehabilitate or improve homes located in rural communities with a population of 20,000 or less. Faribault and Owatonna are currently eligible areas as these communities are “grandfathered” into the program. The maximum loan limits for the counties served throughout the SE Region range from $152,800 in Blue Earth County to $197,800 in Goodhue County. Approval for the maximum amount is based on household income and monthly debt obligations. NO down payment is required and a portion of the loan closing costs may be included into the loan. The applicant must be unable to obtain the needed credit from another lending source, have an acceptable credit history, meet income guidelines, have repayment capacity to service any existing obligations and the home loan payment, be without adequate housing, be a United States citizen or a non-citizen legally admitted for permanent residence and have the ability to personally occupy the home on a permanent basis. Funding is based upon an annual appropriation. Loans may be made for up to 100% of the appraised value of the home. The Rural Development loan may be subsidized based on financial need in order to show repayment capacity. The repayment period of the loan is typically 33 years. For information pertaining to the following counties: Blue Earth, Dakota, Dodge, Faribault, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, LeSueur, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Scott, Steele, Wabasha, Waseca and Winona, contact the USDA, Rural Development office at 1408 21st Ave NW #3, Austin, MN 55912. This photo of a full moon was taken Wednesday, November 28 from County #15 near the intersection of Highway 57. It's ironic that the final full moon in 2012 will be exactly one month later on December 28, a Friday.

Steve Gronseth of Rochester purchased the Kasson Speed Wash June 1 from John and Betty Brandli. He completely remodeled the business from floor to ceiling and reopened last week under the name of The Coin Laundry. Steve began to look into the possibility of purchasing a laundromat four years ago. He asked the Brandlis if they were interested in selling and at that time they were not. Earlier this year they called Steve and asked if he was still interested and he said "yes". The business now has all new electrical wiring and plumbing, new high pressure gas system, high efficiency furnace, central air, and new doors and windows. The front door has an automatic door opener and the bathroom is ADA compliant. There are 16 new front load state of the art washers and 16 dryers. There are fewer machines, but they have twice the wash capacity and the dryers have three times the drying capacity. The washers weigh the load and use the correct proportion of water. The washers also have hot and cold soft water. Two of the washers are giant load

Hi, I’m Dr. Katie L. Elmore, D.C. Professional Qualifications Did you know that becoming certified as a chiropractor requires a minimum of six years of highly specialized college trainings? Today’s Doctor of Chiropractic must complete 4,485 hours of classroom instruction and pass a rigid chiropractic board examination before earning a license. In most states, continuing educational seminars must be completed for annual license renewal. Personal Background In addition, I have completed courses in biology, exercise science and nutrition and hold a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and a minor in Chemistry from North Dakota State University, and a Doctorate of Chiropractic from Northwestern College of Chiropractic. To further my continuing education, I received special training since college in Pediatric and Post-natal Training from the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. And, I have visited a number of other chiropractic clinics to study their methods and procedures including: Bloomington Natural Care Center in Bloomington, MN. Additionally, I devote two days every six weeks attending a nationwide seminar in Orlando, Florida, to stay current on the latest chiropractic advances. This is the kind of training and professionalism I offer you. If you have hesitated visiting a chiropractor, perhaps you didn’t know that chiropractors go to such great lengths to continue their education and provide you with the latest techniques and the most qualified service. Call me today and let me help you.

machines for washing sleeping bags, comforters, quilts and other bulky items. "People use to wait up to an hour to use a dryer. They won't have to do that any more," said Gronseth. The Coin Laundry has a high definition television, WiFi, four folding tables with shelves, new seating, two change machines and a small office. Steve also plans to have an audio system up and running soon. If a patron has a problem with a machine there are green tags with a place for name and phone number so the patron can be contacted and receive a refund. "The first words out of customers' mouths when they see the new look is, 'Wow'," said Steve. "When I bought this I wanted to do things right and I think we accomplished that," he added. The Coin Laundry is open 5 a.m.-11 p.m. seven days a week, 365 days a year. The doors have an automatic locking and unlocking system. Steve plans to have a grand opening in January.
