You also need to understand the dizzying array of rules that can affect your Social Security benefits, and factor in the various strategies that can increase your benefits if you’re married, divorced or widowed. To help you compare all your options, there are a number of online tools and services that have sprung up in recent years that can help you make an informed decision. Online Tools To get started, your first step is to go to the Social Security Statement web page (socialsecurity.gov/mystatement) and get your personalized statement that estimates what your retirement benefits will be at age 62, full retirement age (currently 66) or when you turn 70. Or, if you don’t mind spending a little money, there are higher-level services like Social Security Choices (socialsecuritychoices.com) which provides a comprehensive customized report for only $30 to help single, married or widowed pre-retirees identify their best claiming strategy. Or Maximize My Social Security (maximizemysocialsecurity.com), which charges $40 for their report, and takes into account the thousands of different factors and combinations to help you maximize your benefits. Personalized Advice If, however, you want or need more help, there are specialized firms and financial advisors that can advise you for a fee. One of the best is Social Security Solutions (socialsecuritysolutions.com, 866-762-7526), which offers several levels of service including their “Premier Plus” plan that runs multiple calculations and comparisons, recommends a best course of action in a detailed report, and gives you a oneon-one session with a Social Security specialist over the phone to discuss the report and ask questions. The fee for this service is $125. Premier Social Security Consulting (premiersocialsecurityconsulting.com, 800-518-0761) is another option that offers several consulting packages, ranging from $75 to $295. Or, you can get help through a fee-only financial adviser who specializes in Social Security analysis and charges on an hourly basis. One year anniversary of Daisy Mae Consignments Wednesday, January 2 is the first anniversary of Daisy Mae Consignments, located in a former Leuthold’s building on Main Street. You don’t have to look very hard to spot the building decorated with “Daisy Mae” yellow. Rick and Kim Rudlong have lived in rural Kasson for the past 11 years. They wanted the business to feel like a home when you walk in. One year after opening the store they have tripled the inventory with a variety of gently used and new items available for purchase at discount prices. Their goal has been to give others the chance to buy quality items at lower prices and provide people a way to sell quality items hassle free. Daisy Mae sells furniture, wall decor, lamps, rugs, bedding, curtains, collectibles, antiques, purses, jewelry, backpacks, mens, womens and childrens clothing, outerwear, baby items, toys, games, books and much more. This holiday season Daisy Mae had a Christmas room with a variety of items. Kim said she is undecided as to whether or not the room will be seasonal or Christmas year round.
Last year the owners noticed that childrens clothing was selling very well after the first of the year. Kim speculates since it was the off season for garage salers the consignment store was the alternative choice. Rick and Kim insist the business could not have survived without local support and that includes customers from surrounding communities. They also have items on Craig’s List and say people come from great distances to make purchases. Kim said she has had people tell them the business is a great asset for Kasson. “We’re glad you opened,” is one of the best compliments a new business owner can receive. The future of Daisy Mae Consignments is not as uncertain as it was at this time last year. They too, are strong believers in shopping local and feel that is the foundation for growing a business-including theirs!
One year ago today Rick and Kim Rudlong opened Daisy Mae Consignments on Main Street Kasson. The former Leuthold’s building is eye catching with the bright yellow paint highlighting the front entrance.
Rick and Kim Rudlong have tripled the merchandise they stock at Daisy Mae Consignments in Kasson since opening a year ago, January 2, 2012.

A retirement open house for Dodge County Commissioners Dave Hanson, Dodge Center, and Don Gray, Claremont, was held Wednesday afternoon at the courthouse in Mantorville. Dave Hanson worked as Dodge County Extension Agent from 1966 to 1989. In 1992 he ran for county commissioner and served from 19932012. Don Gray, dairy farmer, retired as a county commissioner after 22 years of service. A courthouse employee commented, “This place is not going to be be the same without them around the courthouse”. Andry is a six pound Chihuahua who is four years old. He has the appearance of an older dog because of the white around his face, but that's just his good looks.
