Fairview Care Center staff decorate for the holidays! A Fairview Care Center staff member decorated an office door in the business office. That triggered an avalanche of Christmas spirit from staff. Someone came up with the idea of decorating the community doors and have a competition with the staff. “Something simple turned into something that mushroomed and grew,” said Fairview administrator Jane Sheeran. “The staff came together and really made it look festive here.” Some two dozen community doors were decorated by staff. Each staff member chose their own theme and many of them did some of the work on their own time. “For our staff here at Fairview this is more than a job. They take pride in the work they do,” said Sheeran. So many of the residents are unable to be at home for the holidays so the staff brought the home, holiday feeling to Fairview last week. “Residents love it,” said the Fairview administrator. Resident Ted Singfiel from Kasson commented,

“It’s darn nice around here.” Activities director Alyssa Huisenga commented, “It really brightens up the place and we had fun doing it.” They decided to decorate the community doors because there were too many resident

doors and they did not want to single people out. Thursday will be the door decorating judging by a resident, family member and staff member. Prizes will be awarded at the fun day.

Judging by the comments made about the festive holiday look at Fairview Care Center this could be the first of many annual staff decorating competitions.

Jodi Liebenow stands by the door she decorated. She works in social services.

Bridgett Donkers and Sandy Nunez are working at the festive looking wing two nurses station. nBy

Randy Carlsen

Staff member Robin Vicker decorated her door saying, “Thatʼs me. It looks like something that would be at my house.”

Courtney Brinkʼs door was of Christmas trees and stuffed animal toys. She said the idea just came to her.

Maintenance personnel had a real sense of humor on their door. They came up with a naughty and nice door. One of the two dozen community doors decorated at the Fairview Care Center is at the entrance to the physical therapy room.

For a Dodge County Free Fair 4-H project this year Hannah Bigelow-Ehmke did a church project and took it one step further. Hannah is a member of both the Vernon Victor 4-H Club and St. John's Lutheran Church in Kasson. The church supports a school in Pignon, Haiti. During vacation Bible school Hannah and her grandmother Darlene Bigelow tied 357 hair ribbons for young girls in Haiti. The girls there have long hair and many of the families are too poor to purchase something as simple as a hair ribbon. The photos here show that the colorful hair ribbons did reach their destination at a school in Bouyaha, Haiti. In fact one of the photos shows the article done on Hannah and her project that appeared on the front page of the Dodge County Independent Newspaper the week after the fair. The pastor of the church/school is holding the article. Hannah won a reserve champion ribbon for the 4-H project that also made many young girls in Haiti very happy. At the time Hannah said she might even give up her ribbon just to see the faces on the girls in Haiti when they opened the package. That was not necessary because photos of several of the girls wearing the ribbons and one of them unpacking them were sent.

Hi, I’m Dr. Katie L. Elmore, D.C. Professional Qualifications Did you know that becoming certified as a chiropractor requires a minimum of six years of highly specialized college trainings? Today’s Doctor of Chiropractic must complete 4,485 hours of classroom instruction and pass a rigid chiropractic board examination before earning a license. In most states, continuing educational seminars must be completed for annual license renewal. Personal Background In addition, I have completed courses in biology, exercise science and nutrition and hold a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and a minor in Chemistry from North Dakota State University, and a Doctorate of Chiropractic from Northwestern College of Chiropractic. To further my continuing education, I received special training since college in Pediatric and Post-natal Training from the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. And, I have visited a number of other chiropractic clinics to study their methods and procedures including: Bloomington Natural Care Center in Bloomington, MN. Additionally, I devote two days every six weeks attending a nationwide seminar in Orlando, Florida, to stay current on the latest chiropractic advances. You ask the Senior question

We find the Savvy answer

KASSON CITY COUNCIL MINUTES

Financial Considerations for Remarrying Later in Life Dear Savvy Senior What are the financial issues that come with remarrying later in life? I’ve been seeing a wonderful man for two years, and we’ve been talking about marriage, but I want to make sure we understand all the possible financial consequences before getting hitched. Single Senior Dear Single, That’s a great question. Getting remarried later in life can actually bring about a host of financial and legal issues that are much different and more complicated than they are for younger couples just starting out. Here are some common problem areas you need to think about, and some tips and resources that can help. • Estate planning: Getting remarried can have a big effect on your estate plan. Even if your will leaves everything to your kids, in most states spouses are automatically entitled to a share of your estate – usually one-third to onehalf. If you don’t want to leave a third or more of your assets to your new partner, get a prenuptial agreement where you both agree not to take anything from the other’s estate. If you do want to leave something to your spouse and ensure your heirs receive their inheritance, a trust may be the best option. • Long-term care: You may be surprised to know that in many states, spouses are responsible for each other’s medical and long-term care bills. This is one of the main reasons many older couples choose to live together instead of marrying. Staying unmarried lets you and your partner qualify individually for public benefits, such as Medicaid (which pays nursing home costs), without draining the other one’s resources. But, if you do remarry and can afford it, consider getting a long-term care insurance policy (see longtermcare.gov) to protect your assets. • Real estate: If you’re planning on living in his house or vice versa, you also need to think about what will happen to the house when the owner dies. If, for example, you both decide to live in your home, but you want your kids to inherit the place after you die, putting the house in both names is not an option. But, you may also not want your heirs to evict him once you die. One solution is for you to give your surviving husband a life estate which gives him the right to live in your property during his lifetime. Then once he dies, the house will pass to your heirs. • Social Security: Remarriage can also affect the benefits of many divorced or widowed seniors (especially women) who receive Social Security from their former spouses. For instance, getting remarried stops divorced spouse’s benefits. And getting remarried before age 60 (50 if you’re disabled) will cause widows and widowers to lose the right to survivors benefits from their former spouse. Remarrying at 60 or older, however, does not affect survivors benefit. For more information, see ssa.gov/women. • Pension benefits: Widows and widowers of public employees, such as police and firemen, often receive a pension which they can lose if they remarry. In addition, widows and widowers of military personnel killed in duty may lose their benefits if they remarry before age 57, and survivors of federal civil servants that receive a pension will forfeit it if they remarry before 55. If you’re receiving one of these benefits, check your policy to see what the affect will be. • Alimony: If you are receiving alimony from an exspouse, it will almost certainly end if you remarry and might even be cut off if you live together. • College aid: If you have any children in college receiving financial aid, getting married and adding a new spouse’s income to the family could affect what he or she gets. To get help with these issues, consider hiring an estate planner who can draw up a plan to protect both you and your partner’s interests. Also see elderlawanswers.com, a contributor to this column and a great resource on many other legal topics. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

Jeff McCool, West Concord Public Charter School

The West Concord Public Charter School (WCPCS) announces the Board of Directors has entered into negotiations with the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) for a $125,000 federal grant! In October 2012, WCPCS participated in a competitive application to receive a Charter Schools Program (CSP) Federal Grant. Ten Minnesota schools applied for this grant, and WCPCS was one of five schools to receive notice to enter into negotiations to complete the grant contract for the $125,000! It is anticipated the grant will start in mid-January and end in August. WCPCS will be eligible to apply for two additional CSP grants. What is the CSP Grant? The primary purpose of the CSP Grant is to expand the number of high-quality charter schools available to students across the nation by providing federal financial assistance for program design, initial implementation, and planning; and to evaluate the effects of charter schools, including their effects on students (in particular, on student academic achievement), staff, and parents. The program also encourages, through the use of funding priorities, the creation of strong charter school laws, in the states, that are designed to provide for the establishment of high-quality charter schools. In addition to this news, WCPCS has also been moving forward with negotiations on establishing a site for the school. After further analysis, the site chosen is located on the south end of Fifth Street, and south of where it intersects South Street. A purchase agreement has been established between the local non-profit owner of the school facility (buyer) West Concord Friends of the Library and the land owner (seller) City of West Concord. The next step for the charter school will be to begin implementation of the grant, after negotiations have been completed with MDE. This implementation will include, but not be limited to hiring staff, purchasing curriculum, and student recruitment efforts. Separately, building construction and lease negotiations will be taking place in the near future with the landlord (Friends of the Library). Please stay tuned for future press releases. WCPCS is currently on schedule to open fall 2013 at the new facility site. Construction is expected to begin April first weather permitting.

Dodge County awarded funds to aid households in crisis The National Board of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program has awarded $3,213 to Dodge County. The money is used to provide food and shelter services to households in crisis. The local board is made up of Salvation Army, Victim’s Services, Semcac, Human Services, and other interested organizations. The local board determines how the funds are to be distributed among emergency food and shelter programs run by local service organizations in the area. Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local governmental or private voluntary organizations chosen to receive funds must: 1) be non-profit or an agency of government, 2) have a checking account and accounting system 3) practice non-discrimination, 4) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 5) have a voluntary board if private, not-for-profit. Qualifying organizations may apply. Anyone wishing more information about the Emergency Food and Shelter Program and how to apply for funding should contact Wendy Todd, Semcac, P.O. Box 549, Rushford, MN 55971-0549, (507) 864-7741.
