Claremont couple claim $1 Million Powerball Prize A Claremont couple unknowingly drove around with a $1 million winning Powerball ticket in the glove box of their car for more than seven months. It wasn't until November 24 when Kristi Himle was searching for her registration information in her car that she came across two unchecked Powerball tickets from the April 21, 2012 drawing. "I figured they weren't even good anymore but I brought them inside for Dennie [her husband] to check," she explained. When Dennie had the tickets scanned at a retailer later that day, he got a message that one of the tickets was worth more than $30,000 and must be redeemed at Lottery headquarters. Unaware of the exact prize amount, he went back home and got on the computer to check the Lottery's website and discovered that the couple won $1 million! "We were both in shock," said Dennie. The couple arrived at the Lottery's headquarters in Roseville on November 30 to claim the prize. Kwik Trip, located at 1112 Second Ave. N.W. in Faribault, sold the winning ticket. The winning numbers drawn on April 21, 2012 were 6-8-20-42-51 and the Powerball was 16.

selected Minnesota Restaurant of the Year Recently the Minnesota Restaurant Association presented 2012 awards and the Hubbell House was selected as the Minnesota Restaurant of the Year. Hubbell House owner Don Pappas and several employees attended the awards ceremony November 19 at the Saint Paul Hotel. Over the years the Hubbell House has been bestowed with several awards. Don Pappas said being selected the Minnesota Restaurant of the Year is the biggest honor they have ever received. He also said it was only fitting eight staff members could attend because there are so many people at the restaurant who made the honor possible. “I am proud of the award and our staff,” said Don. The Restaurant of the Year recognizes a company that provides outstanding customer service and distinguishes itself as a leader in the industry and community. The Hubbell House is one of Minnesota’s oldest restaurants, established in 1854 as an important stop between Winona and St. Peter, then the aspiring state capitol. First operated as an inn, famous guests include Horace Greeley, Alexander Ramsey and Ulysses Grant. In 1946 Paul Pappas laid his eyes on the old limestone structure and knew he had found the location of his dream restaurant. Paul and Irene Pappas expanded the Hubbell House from one dining room for 60 customers to six dining rooms that can seat over 300 guests. Designated a national historic site, the Hubbell House continues to host famous guests, from Dwight Eisenhower to Roy Rogers to Mickey Mantle to the Minnesota Vikings, who train in Mankato. Paul passed away in 1996, just a few days before celebrating his 50th year of ownership.

Son Don Pappas represented the family in accepting the award. He introduced eight employees, noting their years of service and how each has contributed to the success of the restaurant. Waitress Jan Smith drew the most applause when Don said she has worked at the restaurant since 1947. "I really enjoy it and would miss all the people I get to see," said Jan. Four other staff members have at least 30 years experience. General manager Doug Kracht (43 years) and chef Jary Gardner (38 years) have a combined 81 years experience between them and waiter Dan Driver and hostess Ann Driver have 30 years each. “These are the people who have made the Hubbell House,” said Pappas. Doug Kracht said Paul Pappas was always a great guy to work for and to be around this long he said, “You have to like the business and the people you work with”. We have tried to keep pace with the trends and I think we have done that,” added Kracht. The Hubbell House is the first southeast Minnesota restaurant to receive the Restaurant of the Year honor. A majority of the honors have gone to restaurants in the Twin Cities metro area. Attending the Minnesota Restaurant Association 2012 awards ceremony representing the Hubbell House were: Seated Karri Burns, Jan Smith who has waitressed at the Hubbell House since 1947, and Heather Swygman, standing: Scott Pappas, Ann Driver, Don Pappas, Jary Gardner, Doug Kracht, Dan Driver and Dick Jensch.

Hubbell House owner Don Pappas introduces employee Jan Smith who has been on the wait staff since 1947. She received the most applause when introduced at the Minnesota Restaurant Association banquet where the Hubbell House was selected by peers as the 2012 Restaurant of the Year.

Over the past 65 years the Hubbell House has had several celebrities dine at the restaurant. One of them was former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Peter O’Malley who typically ate at the Hubbell House when he was in Rochester for check-ups at Mayo. The Hubbell House was a dream come true for Paul Pappas in 1947. Paul died only a couple weeks prior to the 50th anniversary celebration of the restaurant.

Congratulations to Don Pappas and the Hubbell House staff for being selected the 2012 Minnesota Restaurant of the Year by the Minnesota Restaurant Association. The Hubbell House is a valuable asset to Kasson-Mantorville and we are fortunate to have had such a fine restaurant here for almost 65 years.

How to Find a Lost Pension Dear Savvy Senior, How does one go about tracking down a lost pension? About 35 years ago, I worked at a manufacturing company for a few years that offered employee pensions, and I want to find out if I’m eligible for any money now that I’m about to retire. Searching Steven Dear Steven, Losing track of a small pension from years ago is actually quite common, especially if you’ve have had a lot of jobs throughout your working life. To help you locate a lost pension, here are the steps to take along with some free resources that can help you search if your previous employer has gone out of business, changed names or merged with another firm. Pension Proof If you think you have a pension from a previous employer, and the company is still in business, your first step is to call their human resources department and ask them to give you the contact information of the pension plan administrator. Then you’ll need to contact them to find out how much your pension is worth and how to claim it. Depending on how complete the plan administrator’s records are, you may need to show proof that you once worked for the company and that you are pension eligible. Your old income tax returns and W-2 forms from the years you worked at the company will help you here. If you haven’t saved your old tax returns from these years, you can get a copy of your earnings record from the Social Security Administration, which will show how much you were paid each calendar year by each employer. Call 800-772-1213 and ask them to mail you the “Request for Social Security Earnings Information” form SSA-7050, or you can download it at www.ssa.gov/online/ssa-7050.pdf. You’ll pay a small fee for the report, depending on the number of years of data you request. Some other old forms that can help you prove eligibility are your Summary Plan Descriptions (SPD) that you should have received from your employer when you worked there, or any individual benefit statements. Check the PBGC If you can’t find your former employer because it went out of business, or, if the company ended its pension plan, you need to check the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation’s (PBGC) online pension search directory at search.pbgc.gov/mp/mp.aspx. Or, you can call 800-4007242 and get help over the phone. The PBGC is a federal agency that guarantees pensions of bankrupt companies. The agency also maintains information on any pension plan that has been terminated, even if the company is still in business. The PBGC, however, does not cover or have information on lost pensions that are still active, nor will they help you locate lost 401(k) plans. Get Help The best resource to help you track down a lost active pension from a company that has moved or merged with another firm is the U.S. Administration on Aging Pension Counseling and Information Program. This free program encompasses seven pension assistance programs around the country that serve workers in 30 states. To get the contact information of these counseling programs and the states they serve, visit the Pension Rights Center website at pensionrights.org. If your pension happens to be outside the area served by the pension counseling centers, or if you’re trying to locate a federal or military pension, use Pension Help America at pensionhelp.org. Dodge County Public Health will hold a Ban the Bug Influenza Vaccination Clinic on Friday, December 7 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 42 E. Main Street, Dodge Center. The clinic is part of the statewide Ban the Bug effort to encourage Minnesotans to get vaccinated against influenza. Dec. 2-8 is also National Influenza Vaccination Week. “It is not too late to get a flu shot,” said Peggy Espey, Dodge County Public Health Director. “The Ban the Bug Campaign seeks to remind people that there is still time to protect themselves against influenza.” Influenza vaccinations are recommended for all Minnesotans over age six months, but they are especially important for young children six months to five years old, seniors, people of any age with chronic medical conditions, pregnant women, people living with or caring for those at high risk for complications from influenza, and healthcare workers. The vaccination costs $27 and is free to those with Medicare Part B. Residents are reminded to bring their Medicare and supplemental health insurance cards along to the clinic. Also, wearing short sleeves (under a sweater if it’s cold) makes it easier to get vaccinated. For more information about the Ban the Bug Clinic, call Dodge County Public Health at 507-635-6150.

Stroke and osteoporosis screenings coming to Kasson Residents living in and around the Kasson community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke or bone fracture. Kasson United Methodist Church, 801 5th Ave NW, will host Life Line Screening on December 12, 2012. Marijo and Wayne Thoreson of Forest Lake, MN attended a Life Line Screening and said, "If we hadn't gone to the screening, we would never have known about the problem." Four key points every person needs to know: • Stroke is the third leading cause of death and a leading cause of permanent disability • 80% of stroke victims had no apparent warning signs prior to their stroke • Preventive ultrasound screenings can help you avoid a stroke • Screenings are fast, noninvasive, painless, affordable and convenient Screenings identify potential cardiovascular conditions such as blocked arteries and irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk is also offered and is appropriate for both men and women. Packages start at $149. All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. For more information regarding the screenings or to schedule an appointment, call 1-877-237-1287 or visit our website at www.lifelinescreening.com. Pre-registration is required.
