You ask the Senior question
We find the Savvy answer Employment Resources for Older Job Seekers Dear Savvy Senior, What resources can you recommend to help older job seekers? I’m 62 and have been out of work for nearly a year now and need some help. Looking For Work Dear Looking, While the U.S. job market has improved slightly over the past year or so, challenges persist for many older job seekers. Fortunately, there are a number of free online tools and in-person training centers scattered across the country today that can help you find employment. Here’s what you should know. Online Resources If you have Internet access, there are a number of 50and-older online employment networks that can help you connect with companies that are interested in hiring older workers. Two of the best are workreimagined.org, a resource developed by AARP that combines career advice, job listings and online discussion tied to LinkedIn’s professional networking platform. And retirementjobs.com, which offers a job search engine that lists thousands of jobs nationwide from companies that are actively seeking workers over the age of 50. It also provides job-seeking tips and advice, helps with resume writing and allows you to post your resume online for companies to find you. Some other good 50-plus job seeking sites to try are workforce50.com, retiredbrains.com, retireeworkforce.com, and encore.org a resource that helps older workers find meaningful work in the second half of life. In-Person Help Another good place to get help finding a job is at a Career One-Stop center. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, these are free job resource centers that can help you explore career options, search for jobs, find training, write a resume, prepare for an interview and much more. There are around 3,000 of these centers located throughout the country. To find one near you, call 877348-0502 or go to careeronestop.org. Depending on your financial situation, another program that may help is the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). Also sponsored by the Department of Labor, SCSEP offers access to training and part time job placements in a wide variety of community service positions such as day care centers, senior centers, governmental agencies, schools, hospitals, libraries and landscaping centers. To qualify, participants must be over 55, unemployed and have poor employment prospects. To learn more or locate a program in your area visit www.doleta.gov/seniors or call 877-872-5627. Work at Home If you’re interested in working at home, there are many opportunities depending on your skills, but be careful of rampant work-at-home scams that offer big paydays without much effort. Some of the more popular work-at-home jobs include “customer service agents” who fields calls from their employers’ customers and prospective customers – you don’t place telemarketing calls. Agents earn an average of $8 to $15 an hour and many also receive incentives and commission, too. To find these jobs see arise.com, alpineaccess.com, liveops.com and workingsolutions.com. If you have good typing skills there are “transcriptionist” jobs that pay around $10 per hour for typing verbatim accounts of board meetings, presentations, conference calls, etc. Companies that hire transcriptionists are tigerfish.com, ubiqus.com, ctran.com. And if you have a college degree, online “tutoring” or “proofreading” jobs are always available. See tutor.com to find tutoring opportunities which pay between $10 and $15 per hour. Or, if you have some writing or editing experience, proofreading pays $12 to $20 per hour. See firstediting.com and cactusglobal.com to look for proofreading jobs. For more work at home ideas and resources, see retiredbrains.com and click on the “Work from Home” tab on the left side of the page. Start a Business If you’re interested in starting a small business but could use some help getting started, the U.S. Small Business Administration offers tips, tools and free online courses that you can access at sba.gov.
Registration for the Dodge County Home and Business Expo is running well ahead of schedule with 80% of the exhibitor booths already taken, Expo co-chair Larry Dobson said Monday. “We could be filled by the end of the month this year,” he said, “So anyone who wants to participate should get registered as soon as possible.” As usual, there will be door prizes of baskets prepared by the participating chambers of commerce and community clubs with items donated by their community businesses. The value of each of the baskets is at least $50 and usually more. “Exhibitors should start making arrangements to have the items on hand that they want to place in the baskets,” Dobson said. “Many exhibitors also give away items at their booths and should make sure those items are ordered as well.” Activities at the Expo will begin at 8 a.m. with the Farmers Share Breakfast, which is always well attended. The menu will be similar to previous years and will be announced later. The Expo ends at 2 p.m. The layout of the exhibits will be changed somewhat because of construction taking place at the school. This will be the 15th annual Dodge County Expo. Each year, between 2,000 and 3,000 people attend the Expo where they can learn about a hundred or more businesses and organizations providing products, services and jobs in Dodge County. The Expo takes place on Saturday, April 13 at Triton High School in Dodge Center and is sponsored by the chambers of commerce and community clubs representing the communities of Dodge Center, Hayfield, Kasson, West Concord, Mantorville and Claremont.
Thank You
Due to the recent accumulations of snow it becomes very important for residents to help the City of Kasson Street Department keep the fire hydrants clear of snow. Many home owners are very good about keeping hydrants clear on their street corner and we appreciate that effort. We would appreciate it if all homeowners on a block where there is a fire hydrant would pitch in and help keep hydrants clear of snow. Some day that could make a difference in the fire department’s ability to access a hydrant and could even save a home or life. Thank you for your help.

This year, evaluate whether you can benefit from: 1. Tax-advantaged investments. If appropriate, consider tax-free municipal bonds to provide federally tax-free income.* 2. Tax-advantaged retirement accounts. Consider contributing to a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or 401(k) to help lower your taxable income.
Our sincere thanks to Dr. Paul Donnay!
3. Tax-advantaged college savings accounts. Contribute or gift to a college savings plan for your children or grandchildren. *May be subject to state and local taxes and the alternative minimum tax (AMT).

Sisters soon become sensation! By Elouise Clemintine The show that started off as a simple show has become a sensation! Nunsense, the play written by Dan Goggin, directed by Laura Nordland, and musically directed by Paula Sorensen, has been a hit at the Mantorville Opera House. So much so, they are adding another weekend! On Friday through Sunday, March 1-3, you can see the musical that has people talking about what a great production is at the Mantorville Opera House. Starring the Little Sisters of Hoboken, this show goes through the trials of Reverend Mother Regina (Paula Sorensen) and her fellow sisters as they try to raise funds for a very important cause: the burial of the last four dead sisters that were some of the 52 that died after one bowl of Sister Julia, Child of God’s, poisonous soup. With the help of the Mistress of the Novices, Sister Hubert (Melanie Dobson), their feisty fellow sister, Sister Robert Anne (Priscilla Ruemping), the aspiring nun ballerina Sister Mary Leo (Alexa Nash), and even the unfortunate soul who lost her memory, Sister Mary Amnesia (Cheryl Frarck), they plan together to make their show a success and get the audience’s generous donations by showing off their talents. With the help of Sister Mary Martin (Shari Welsh), Sister Mary Cardelia (Cindy Saunders), and Sister Mary Poppins (Wendy Schleeter), along with Brother Lycus Flahrety as stage manager and Dan Shietel as pianist, this show makes audiences roll with laughter and holler for more! Show times are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., March 1 and 2, and Sunday at 2 p.m. March 3. Adult tickets are $18, and Senior and Children tickets are $16.

Nathan Davidson and Phil Johnson are the founding members of the Lost Faculties. Fifteen years later they are planning a homecoming performance Friday, March 8 at the Hubbell House from 7:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. Fifteen years ago the group was "born" while playing a K-M homecoming pep fest followed by the faculty Christmas party. Both Davidson (band/music) and Johnson (industrial technology) were on the staff at the high school at the time. According to Davidson what has "sold" the band is that they play a variety of music; classic rock 'n roll with a touch of country. Over the years they have attracted a strong local following in southeast Minnesota from Wabasha to Rochester and the K-M area. Over the years they have played at many festivals, clubs and private parties. As Davidson said, "All bands change personnel". The Lost Faculties started as a four piece band, went to a five, then six pieces and are now a five piece band. The present members are Nathan Davidson (guitar, trumpet, sax and vocals), Phil Johnson (guitar and vocals), Bobbi Vogel (trombone and vocals), Alex Nahvi (bass) and Scott Kovar (drums). Alex and Scott are the newest members of the band, but are experienced and have played in a variety of bands. A couple of the highlights over the last few years have been the opportunity to open for Peter Noone and Herman's Hermits in 2001 with 14,000 people in the audience. They also opened for Big Brother and Holding Company (Janis Joplin's band) in Zumbrota where three original members continue to play. Relating to Paul Simon's (Simon and Garfunkel) "Still crazy after all these years". Davidson ponders, "Even at our age, we like to think we are a little like that too". In addition to playing at the Hubbell House as part of a homecoming performance, the Lost Faculties will also be playing at Michael's/Papageorge's Saturday, March 9 from 7-10 p.m.

‘Captured Moments’ The name of Jill Moosbrugger's business explains what the business is all about. Captured Moments Photography specializes in capturing moments customers can keep forever. She has been preserving special moments for clients for over 20 years. Jill specializes as a wedding photographer, but also photographs a number of other special events from senior portraits to reunions and family portraits. She is able to provide traditional and candid photography to record your special occasion. Jill has had an interest in photography since she was very young. The youngest and only daughter of four siblings Jill always had a camera at her side starting at a very young age. With the help of her father Jill built her own dark room at home and was developing her own film as a young teen. Jill shot her first wedding at 18. While living in the Twin Cities she would shoot 30 weddings a year. Since moving to Kasson over nine years ago Jill has been establishing and growing her business. Jill Moosbrugger specializes in photographing some of the most important moments in peoples’ lives. Photographs enhance a lifetime memory and can be passed on to the next generation. Digital photography has opened up new opportunities for Jill and her clients. She is able to retouch photographs and add special effects. As a wedding photographer Jill realizes the importance of the special day for the couple and their families. "I am sharing in the happiest day of their lives. It's important to make them as relaxed as possible, knowing there is so much going on in their minds," said Jill. She will typically meet with the couple and ask if there are any special shots they want.
EYE CARE
FINANCIAL SERVICES
She also has a recommended list of poses. All of Jill’s sessions include the editing and enhancing of the images, an online gallery that can be shared with others, and a CD with release of every image. She also offers a free engagement session with every wedding booked to have the opportunity to get to know the couple better, and for them to get to know her too. One of the biggest challenges in shooting a wedding is being timely. If someone is late that could mean shifting to another shot with people who are present to keep the photo shoot on schedule. Jill emphasizes shooting the pictures the bride and groom want. By the time she finishes photographing a wedding Jill will know the family fairly well. Now that Jill has children of her own, she sees first hand the value and importance of family and children's portraiture, so she has been focusing on that more recently. Jill provides the flexibility of being able to shoot on location, at the client’s home, or at her home, typically without any travel fees. She charges by the sitting, not the hour so that there is no pressure. If the subjects need time to ease into things in order to capture their true character, For that is just fine! more information on Captured Moments Photography
