Roseville man charged with copper theft at former school Shawn Michael Depew, 34, of Roseville, has been charged with burglary in the second degree for taking copper pipe out of the former Kasson school sometime last winter. Depew will make his first court appearance Wednesday, December 19 in Dodge County District Court. A group of individuals were touring the building with Counselor Realty realtor Kathy O'Malley April 11, 2012 to determine what would have to be done to refurbish the structure and convert the building to senior apartments. Kasson police investigator Jesse Reding and assistant chief Kent Berghuis responded to the former Kasson school when city administrator Randy Lenth called and said someone had broken into the former school building and removed most of the copper pipe from the walls and ceilings. An investigation revealed a window in the door on the northwest side of the school was broken to gain access. Inside officers found windows covered with black plastic so no one on the outside could see in. According to the police report the pipes appeared to have been cut with a saw and the insulation around the pipes was left on Shawn Michael Depew the floor. What appeared to be a "work station" was set up in the main floor hallway. Several hundred feet of copper were removed from all levels of the building, including the basement. A ramp had been set up with planks on the stairs to make it easier to remove the larger copper pipe. October 2, 2012 investigator Reding was contacted by an investigator of the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office in Duluth. DNA from the cigarette butts submitted by Reding to the BCA matched the butts found in a school building in St. Louis County where copper pipe had been removed. The investigation of the St. Louis County case resulted in a possible suspect after the defendant's truck was seen leaving one of the abandoned schools in St. Louis County. A crime alert was sent out to all Minnesota scrap yards. K Ramps were found leading out Shown is left behind insulation & K Metal Recycling in Minneapolis of basement boiler room to make after the copper pipe had been called and said they had done multiple transactions with Depew and he had removal of copper pipe easier. removed. received over $19,000 for the sale of copper piping. Depew was also arrested in Goodhue County in August of 2012 for burglary of an abandoned school in Kenyon. He intended to show up at the Kenyon Police Department to retrieve his impounded truck. Reding responded to Kenyon to meet with the defendant. Depew was read his Miranda warning by Reding and said he did not want to answer any questions at that time. He was then served with a search warrant to get a DNA sample and the sample was sent to the BCA. The home of Albert and Rose Koss, 603 6th Avenue, N.E., Kasson, catches the eye of those driving around looking at Christmas lights. In fact many people stop once they get a good look at Santa on the roof. If you are driving around with the kids tell them Santa is fishing. Otherwise, you be the judge! Rose said they have had many good comments on the lighting and not one negative one yet. Last year neighbors encouraged Albert to set up a Santa. This year he went one step further.

Also, the other photo did not involve a home invasion. There are several inflatable Christmas scenes residents only plug in at night as a way of saving energy. In this lawn Santa had that deflated look, but you can be assured that by nightfall he was looking much more chipper.

Toys for Tots now collecting at local drop off sites It’s that time of year again when donations for the Toys for Tots Program are collected. There are about 100 donation drop sites located throughout Southeast Minnesota at various businesses. New this year are three drop boxes located at the courthouse in Mantorville, including an afterhours drop box in the sheriff’s lobby and another drop box located at the Kasson Police Department. Last year the Southeast Minnesota Chapter collected and distributed over 18,000 toys to nearly 9,000 needy children. This effort was accomplished through the help of many volunteers, both individuals and groups like the Optimists Club, the Marine Corps League and Scout troops. Each year the Southeast Minnesota Toys for Tots Chapter collects, sorts, counts and distributes the toys in a donated warehouse located in Rochester. Volunteers process the toys as fast as they are collected in order to stay ahead of the need. Collection boxes will remain out until December 21 but people are asked to not wait until the last minute to donate. The Toys for Tots Program prefers to distribute toys to families in plenty of time for them to get the gifts wrapped for Christmas, so donate early. The collected toys are distributed through various agencies such as Christmas Anonymous, the Salvation Army and other agencies in the small towns in this area.

Does your family doctor deserve recognition? - Last chance to nominate your Family Physician for State Award-

Is your family doctor the best of the best? Does he or she care for patients in an extraordinary way? The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) wants you to tell us why your family physician should be named the 2013 Minnesota Family Physician of the Year. The Family Physician of the Year Award is presented annually to a doctor who specializes in Family Medicine. This doctor should represent the highest ideals of the specialty. Dr. Andrew Burgdorf of Buffalo, MN, was honored in 2012. Nominations will be accepted in writing through January 4, 2013. Nominators should describe how the candidate’s outstanding personal and professional qualities and community involvement. Often times a person or group in the community will lead the effort encouraging dozens of patients and colleagues to write on behalf of a particular family physician. FAmily physicians who have been nominated in previous years, but who have not received the award, can be nominated again. Nomination letters can be sent to the MAFP office located at 600 S. Highway 169, Suite #1680, St. Louis Park, MN, 55426, or emailed to kthorson@mafp.org. Questions can be directed to the MAFP office at (952) 542-0130 or (800) 9998198 or visit us online at www.mafp.org/awfamphysician.asp. All letters/emails will be carefully read and considered by a task force of family physicians who will select up to four finalists. The MAFP Board of Directors will choose one physician to receive the 2012 Family Physician of the Year Award. The award will be presented to the recipient in April. Finalists will be listed on the MAFP website in mid-February. Please note: Nominees must be members of the MAFP. While a majority of family physicians in the state are members, please feel free to call or email if you would like to check on your physician’s membership status before submitting a letter.
