Businesses Help Care & Share Reach Goal On the 30th anniversary of the K-M Care & Share Auction area businesses played a key role in helping the committee reach their goal of $30,000. According to Care & Share chairperson Lisa Peterson, in her sixth year of coordinating the event, $30,000 was a significant goal since this is the 30th year. A little over $31,000 was raised. Church, civic, community groups and individuals were all a big part of helping the goal be attained at a time when there seems to be more need than ever before. For K-M Care & Share to succeed K-M businesses also must succeed. The formula is very simple. If business revenues are down the business can't give as much and for a high percentage of area businesses Care & Share is a priority whether that means donating merchandise, bidding at the auction or in many cases-both! As Lisa Peterson said, "K-M Care & Share has withstood the test of time." Even through the most difficult times when the recession hit in 2006 the K-M Care & Share Auction continued to generate between $25,000 and $30,000.

K-M Care & Share depends on local support and area businesses have been participating for 30 years. Businesses are very generous when donating merchandise, bidding at the auction or sometimes doing both both!

The holiday season is upon us and like most retailers, this is an important time of the year when it comes to the business' bottom line. They count on local support. The more local support they receive, the more they profit and are able to give back to the community. Like the old saying states, "What goes around comes around." Also, coming up is the 11th Annual Downtown Christmas In Kasson Saturday, December 8 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Businesses sponsor fun family activities and there is also a special visit by two of Santa's reindeer. There will be Christmas crafts, a visit by Santa, a breakfast with Mr. & Mrs. Claus, Christmas ornament making, cranberry and popcorn stringing, coloring contest, cookie cutout fun and much more. Guess what? All of these events and activities are free and sponsored by participating businesses and the Kasson Chamber of Commerce. What makes this all possible are the dedicated customers who support each and every Kasson Chamber business. K-M Care & Share Auction and Downtown Christmas In Kasson. Without local business support none of this would Never know who you might see at the be possible. When you are downtown with your children enjoying the free fun Downtown Christmas In Kasson Saturday, family activities remember to thank a December 8. Last year the Grinch made a special appearance at the Kasson Mini Mall. Kasson businessperson!

Dan Pries not hoping for repeat winter Last year Earl's Small Engine Repair of Byron sold 250 walk behind snowblowers up until two weeks before Christmas. "Then it was like someone shut a light switch off," said owner Dan Pries. "We didn't sell a thing and that was after reordering more blowers". Dan ordered more blowers before the Christmas holiday and from that point on this part of the state experienced one of the mildest winters on record that included very little snow. Pries has walk behind blowers stored in a big shed behind the store and the showroom floor is lined with new ones. He has another 250 blowers and is counting on a late November snow to ignite sales. The problem is if the area does not have snow by the first of the year people will try and get by with that they have. Last year snowblowers were not required any more than a half dozen times. "We need snow," said Pries.

Wednesday, November 21 at approximately 1:20 p.m. the Dodge County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a motorist that the driver of a maroon minivan flashed a gun at him and was now heading south on State Highway 56 from U.S. Highway 14. The minivan was located and stopped south of Brownsdale in Mower County. The suspect was brought back to the Dodge County Sheriff's Office where the investigation into the incident continued. Charges will be filed at a later date. Deputies received assistance from the Mower County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol. According to Dodge County Sheriff Jim Jensen, the incident appears to be the result of "road rage". At 2:35 p.m. that same day the sheriff's office received a 911 call from a Dodge Center maintenance worker who reported the roof had collapsed on the former Dodge Center maintenance building and there were two people trapped inside. The Dodge Center Fire Department, Dodge Center Ambulance and Dodge County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene. One of the workers from Swenke Construction, Inc. of Kasson walked out without assistance and the other was inside the cab of a loader he was working in. The fire department had to cut part of the collapsed building away to free him. He was not injured. The workers from Swenke Construction were preparing the building for demolition Monday, November 26. No one was injured and it is unknown how much damage was done to the loader.

"Making a good first impression is important," said Tatge. It is also important to instill trust with a customer because many customers are unable to distinguish between a high quality diamond and a less expensive one. Larry Tatge will show a customer the difference. When asked about retirement Larry said he is "Qualified. Then what would I do? This is too much fun!" Why give up something like helping a customer pick out a special ring or necklace and know that it is going to make someone else very happy? One short conversation with Larry and you can easily tell he enjoys the business and his customers who come through the door. He is not yet ready to be called "retired". Tatge Jewelry is in the DCI business directory and is located at 625 2nd Street, which is the main street in Kenyon. Call (507)789-6522 or 1-800-58tatge. Larry will meet with customers after hours, if more convenient.

After 40 years in business Tatge Jewelry Store owner still enjoys coming to work L

arry Tatge of Kenyon first worked as a mechanic in town and decided a change was in order. He went into the jewelry business and started Tatge Jewelry 40 years ago on Main Street Kenyon with little knowledge of the jewelry business. So what is the correlation between being a mechanic and a jewelry store owner? Larry Tatge responds by saying, "Nothing". Instead of taking apart engines Larry enjoys breaking down old clocks and restoring them to like new working order. He keeps a restored clock running for days before it leaves the store. Then he knows there are not going to Larry Tatge started Tatge be future problems. Jewelry 40 years ago and In his early 20's, Larry enjoyed the sport of drag racinsists he is still having ing. In fact he even set speed too much fun to consider records in the quarter mile, 170plus miles per hour, which 40 retirement. years ago was a blur! He has several trophies tucked away in a back room at the store to show for his racing efforts. Larry said he worked hard to

support his racing habit. He said taking off from the starting line with all that horsepower kicking in is a feeling he will never forget. Larry was a self taught drag racer. He was also self taught in the jewelry business. At times he learned the jewelry business the old fashioned way, by trial and error. He will be the first to admit some of those errors cost him money too. Today Larry Tatge knows a great deal more about the jewelry business than he knew as mechanic. Forty years ago the small town jewelry store was common. Today stores like Tatge Jewelry are a rarity and Larry would not have survived 40 years in Kenyon had he not done something right! Being in a small community Larry still feels he has an advantage over the stores that are in the city malls. One big advantage is that his overhead is much less. The short drive to Kenyon will be a money saver for shoppers looking for diamond earrings, pendants, necklaces, rubies or sapphires,

engagement rings, wedding rings and bands. A new piece of jewelry the store is promoting this holiday season is called Concepts, ruby, sapphire and emerald earrings. They will not irritate, are doctor recommended and made in the USA. They also sell for only $19.99. (See sample pictured with this article.) Looking for a gift idea? Tatge sells Howard Miller clocks, from mantle and wall clocks to grandfather clocks. He also sells several designs of cuckoo clocks. In addition, Larry does in-store engraving of plaques and trophies. Even after 40 years in business, Larry insists every day is still a learning experience. "I don't know it all about the business," said Tatge. What he has learned is that if you treat people right and give them a fair price, they will be back and they will tell other people too. Many of his customers have been coming back 25-30 years and second generation customers are also common.

Homebodies Dear Homebodies, Most seniors, like you and your husband, want to stay living in their own home. But being able to do so often depends on how easy it will be to get around the house if you develop physical limitations. Here are some helpful resources you can turn to, to get an idea of what types of improvements you should make that will make your home safer and more convenient as you grow older. Get Informed A good first step in making your house senior-friendly is to do a home assessment. Go through your house, room by room as if you’ve never set foot in it before, looking for problem areas like potential tripping or slipping hazards, and areas that are hard to access. To help you with this, there are various organizations that offer published lists of questions to ask, and things to look for to identify problems. The Fall Prevention Center of Excellence (see homemods.org), for example, offers a number of online checklists including one called “How Well Does Your Home Meet Your Needs?” that you can access directly at homeneedschecklist.org. Or, download and print off the National Caregivers Library “Home Modification Checklist” at caregiverslibrary.org – click on “Checklists & Forms,” then on “Housing” to get there. AARP also has an excellent resource called “The AARP Home Fit Guide” that provides a checklist and tips to keep your home safe and livable as you age. You can access it at homefitguide.org, or if you’re an AARP member, call 888687-2277 and ask them to mail you a free copy. Personalized Advice If you want more personalized help, consider getting a professional in-home assessment with an occupational therapist. An occupational therapist, or OT can evaluate the challenges and shortcomings of your home, make modification recommendations and refer you to products and services to help you make improvements. Ask your doctor for a referral to an OT in your area. Your local Area Agency on Aging (call the Eldercare Locator at 800-677-1116 for contact information) can also help you find nearby therapists. Many health insurance providers, including Medicare, will pay for a home assessment by an OT if prescribed by your doctor. However, they will not cover the physical upgrades to the home. Another good option is to contact a builder who’s a Certified Aging in Place Specialist. He or she can suggest ways to modify your home that will fit your needs and budget. To find one, go to the National Association of Home Builders website at nahb.org/hireacaps where you can search by state and zip code. Home Modifications Ideas There are dozens of small, simple things you can do to make your home more user-friendly as you age, such as securing throw rugs with double-sided tape to avoid tripping, installing brighter full-spectrum bulbs in existing light fixtures to improve visibility, and adding grab bars to the bathroom for support. There are also a number of bigger more extensive projects like installing a stair-lift or elevator for multi-floor access, and replacing the tub with a walk-in shower for easier entry and exit. To get a list of more senior-friendly home improvement ideas and illustrations, see the National Aging in Place Council website at ageinplace.org – click on “Practical Advice” then on “Making Your Home Senior Friendly.” Another good resource that’s loaded with tips and universal design ideas is the “AARP Guide to Revitalizing Your Home.” It’s available in book stores nationwide as well as online at sites like amazon.com for around $16. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

Derby Construction recipient of Rochester Area Builders Awards David Derby, owner of Derby Construction, was awarded the Peoples’ Choice Award for new construction at the Fall Showcase of Homes and the Remodelers Tour. The awards were announced at the monthly meeting of the Rochester Area Builders (RAB). David has entered homes for new construction in the Showcase of Homes the last three years and this is the first year he entered in the Remodelers Tour. The remodeled home is a complete remodel. There are all new Marvin Integrity windows, three panel doors, custom beam work, wainscotting, built-ins, extraordinary tile work, a second kitchen/wet bar, theatre room with 154” projector, 8” painted trim on upper level and cherry trim in lower and Amish built cabinets on both levels. The exterior is HardiPlank lap siding and efface to create a stucco look. There are washed aggregate sidewalks and patio, landscaping with fireplace/entertainment area topped with an extravagant tree house. The Fall Showcase Home is Victorian style designed to meet the customer’s needs. There is 8” cherry base and trim and custom crown window tops, arched beam details, hardwood throughout, Amish built cabinets and custom stone. David said they carried the same level of craftsmanship to the exterior. David graduated from Triton High School in 1999. He attended the University of Wisconsin, River Falls with the intent of becoming an art teacher. During the summers he built homes and was hooked. In several ways the degree did not go to waste. Home building and design benefits from an artistic eye. “We build from the ground up,” said Dave. All the homes are pre-sold and he will have two to three crews working at any given time. He currently has a home being constructed at Somerby in Byron that will be entered in the Fall Showcase of Homes next year. The home tours are held in the fall for six days over consecutive weekends. Dave was also the People’s Choice Award winner for new construction in 2010 and 2011.This year was the first time he entered a home in the Remodelers Tour. Four entries, four wins! What is the source of his success? He insists it is the excellent help and support from home by his fiancee Ashley.

Before (above) and after (left) is the home selected for the Peoples’ Choice Award for the Remodelers Tour.
