For more information on the animals below, call Camp Companion at 951-7801. www.campcompanion.org Jett or Mama Jett as she is called is a sweet girl with beautiful green eyes and gorgeous flowing fur! She is estimated to be about a year old. Jett was discovered protecting her babies under a bench in Hayfield in August. We are guessing that Jett was dumped just before giving birth to her kittens. When she was found, Jett was extremely thin but managed to raise three healthy loving babies in foster care. Now that her babies are weaned and adopted, she has gained some much needed weight and is ready for a safe and loving home. Jett is always friendly and loves all people. She likes some adult cats once she gets to know them. All adoptable pets have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. For more information about adoption, please contact Camp Companion at 507-9517801, www.campcompanion.org, or find us on Facebook!

How to Save Money by Donating Your Body to Science Dear Savvy Senior, What can you tell me about body donations? With little money to spare, I’m looking for a cheap way to die and have heard that donating my body to science is free, not to mention it benefits medical research. Old and Poor Dear Old If you’re looking to eliminate your final farewell expense and help advance medical research, donating your body to science is a great option to consider. Here’s what you should know. Body Donations Each year, an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 Americans donate their whole body, after death, to medical facilities throughout the country to be used in medical research projects, anatomy lessons and surgical practice. After using your body, these facilities will then provide free cremation – which typically costs $600 to $3,000 – and will either bury or scatter your ashes in a local cemetery or return them to your family, usually within a year or two. Here are a few other tidbits you need to know to help you decide on whether whole-body donation is right for you. • Organ donors excluded: Most programs require that you donate your whole body in its entirety. So if you want to be an organ donor, you won’t qualify to be a whole body donor too. You’ll have to choose. • Not all bodies are accepted: If, for example, your body has been badly damaged in a care accident or if you’re morbidly obese, you many not qualify. • Body transporting is covered: Most programs will pay to transport your body to their facility unless your body must be moved from out of state. • No special requests: Most programs won’t allow you to donate your body for a specific purpose – you give them the body and they decide how to use it. • Funeral services are not covered: Most programs will allow your family to conduct any final services they wish before taking custody of your body, but they won’t pay for it. • Your family won’t be paid: Federal law prohibits buying bodies. What To Do If you do decide you want to donate your body, it’s best to make arrangements in advance with a body donation program in your area. Most programs are offered by university-affiliated medical schools. To find one near you, the University of Florida maintains a list of U.S. programs and their contact information at www.med.ufl.edu/anatbd/usprograms.html. In addition to the medical schools, there are also a number of private organizations like Anatomy Gifts Registry (anatomicgift.com), BioGift (biogift.org) and Science Care (sciencecare.com) that accept whole body donations too. If you don’t have internet access, you can get help over the phone by calling the National Family Services Desk which operates a free body donation referral service during business hours at 800-727-0700. Once you locate a program in your area, call and ask them to mail you an information/registration packet that will explain exactly how their program works. To sign up, you’ll simply need to fill out a couple of forms. But, you can always change your mind by revoking your authorization in writing. After you have made arrangements, you then need to tell your family members so they will know what to do and who to contact after your death. It’s also a good idea to tell your doctor and put your wishes in writing in your advance directives. These are legal documents that include a medical power of attorney and living will that spell out your wishes regarding your end-of-life medical treatment when you can no longer make decisions for yourself. If you don’t have an advance directive, go to caringinfo.org or call 800-658-8898 where you can get free statespecific forms with instructions to help you make one. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

Helping Hands Thrift Store in Kasson benefits those who have a need n
By Randy Carlsen
Proceeds from the Helping Hands Thrift Store in Kasson, located in the former post office on Main Street, help those who have a need. If someone has a fire Helping Hands is there. Someone loses a job and falls on hard times, Helping Hands will assist them. They have donated to the Dodge Center Ambulance service, to cancer fundraisers, Semcac and the Ronald McDonald House. The Helping Hands Thrift Store was started by Larry Smith in Dodge Center. Dan McKittrick has since taken over the business and moved it to Kasson in the former Main Street post office. The business operates six days a week, 10:30-5:30 Monday-Friday and Saturday 10-3. Most recently Dan said they gave a back massage heater to an elderly gentleman, donated a pair of crutches, donated an older computer to a family and two televisions to another family. "What we give to God he is going to give back to us," said Dan. The business features a wide variety of items, from collectibles and antiques to clothing, housewares, comic books, games, furniture and seasonal merchandise such as Christmas items. The clothing that does not sell goes to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) drop box next to the Kasson American Legion. They also donate items to the Salvation Army Store in Rochester. Many of the products are donated, but Dan does buy some on the internet and at garage sales. Churches are also good about donating items because they know the profits go for a good cause. Dan will also sell merchandise on eBay or Craig's List. The new location for Helping Hands has a restroom and two dressing rooms. "We did not have that in Dodge Center," said Dan. On Monday the store has 50% off all clothing and on Saturday they have 50% off everything in the store. A new addition is a line of vitamins and herbs being sold by Corrine Burke at Helping Hands. In 1987 Corrine started working as a clerk in the Country Health Store. After working there two years
Corrine and her husband Pat bought the store and moved it to a larger location. They bought another store in east Las Vegas. Upon his death she moved to Kasson to be closer to her daughter Brenda (Kevin) Kochevar.
Corrine, who works in the fabric department at Kasson Variety, said she likes the small town atmosphere and is hopeful that by selling vitamins and herbs at Helping Hands it can benefit the business.
Corrine Burke and Dan McKittrick are pictured in the Helping Hands Thrift Store in Kasson, located in the former post office. Dan owns and operates the non-profit thrift store and Corrine recently started selling a line of vitamins and herbs there.

MANTORVILLE TOWNSHIP SNOW REMOVAL POLICY
“MERRY HOUR”
PURPOSE: To give the citizens of Mantorville Township a realistic expectation of the snow and ice removal services that will be provided during the winter season. This policy is based on a similar policy developed by the Dodge County Highway Department. GOAL: The general goal of the Township is to keep the township roads passable during the most heavily traveled periods of the week. Service is prioritized by traffic volume and the most logical routing pattern. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES: The first priority is to make ALL roads passable. Once all roads are passable, the lanes will then be widened, and abrasive/chemical mixtures applied if necessary. Finally, additional clean up will be done, if time allows before the next snow. Mantorville Township has only one operator, one snow plow, and one truck. Operator duty shifts must be limited to 12 hours per day for safety reasons, therefore in no case is 24 hour a day coverage provided. Icing bridges or snow drifting on roads are an expected aspect of winter travel and generally are not adequate justification to dispatch the snow plow. Hours of operation will be determined by weather conditions and/or traffic volume. *The township will not be responsible for vehicles parked on township roads during snow removal emergencies. Week-ends and holidays will receive a reduced level of service, due to lower traffic volume and limited resources available. (We do not have access to sand/salt if our supplier is not open.) If the weather service has recommended no travel, it is assumed there will be low traffic volume, resulting in a lower level of service. Operations will be halted when conditions are too hazardous, or if reasonable accomplishments cannot be made. State statute 169.42 requires that NO snow be pushed onto township right of way. EMERGENCY CALLS: Snow plows will not be dispatched at night on most roads except for true emergency calls such as assisting, fire departments, ambulance crews, or searching for known stranded motorists. business directory Replace worn out garage doors before the reality of winter sets in! Now! May be the best time to replace an overhead door at your home or business. The technology and insulating factor of a new garage door can help keep out the summer heat and have you prepared for colder winter days that are on the way. A new garage door can not only save energy, but adds value to your home. Lorne DeRaad, owner of DeRaad Overhead Doors, has been in the overhead door business since 1993. He started on his own eight summers ago. Every garage door Lorne installs he does as if it were his own. He had the same work ethic as an employee installing a garage door as he has as business owner today. "I take pride in my work and that has not changed since I started the business," said De Raad. Lorne does both installation and service work. He installs doors of all types, from residential and commercial to farm buildings. There are no hidden costs in his prices and he includes the door, labor and installation in that price. He places a great deal of emphasis on "service" and that includes service after the installation. He features C.H.I doors and Liftmaster openers. Lorne grew up in Dodge Center and graduated from there. He lives in the area and is working on "growing" his business in the Dodge County, Byron and Rochester areas and establishing longstanding working relationships with customers. Lorne's work ethic, business philosophy and fair pricing have proven successful for seven years so there is no reason to change. "Doing quality work and being competitively priced can reap rewards in the form of work," said Lorne. "Doing good work is good for business referrals too." Lorne is insured, bonded and willing to give customers a free estimate. Give Lorne a call at (507)634-7074 or (507)421-4845.

If the condition your garage door is "marginal" at best now might be a good time for replacementbefore winter settles in for the next few months! Give Lorne a call at (507)421-4845. Lorne DeRaad has been busy doing service work lately. With winter just around the corner now might be the best time to replace your "marginal" garage door.

Crop acreage reporting dates change for forage crops in Minnesota Minnesota USDA-Farm Service Agency (FSA) State Executive Director Linda Hennen has announced that some crop acreage reporting dates have been changed to reduce confusion and eventually be the same as those established for crop insurance. This change applies to all forage crops, regardless of crop insurance coverage. Producers that have perennial forage crops must file a 2013 acreage certification by November 15. Due to the timing of this change for the 2013 crop year, late-file fees and associated spot checks will be waived for these crops to accommodate producers that come in after November 15 through July 15, 2013. “FSA and the USDA-Risk Management Agency (RMA) have been working to make crop acreage reporting dates consistent for all farm and insurance programs,” SED Hennen stated. “It is important for producers of forage crops in Minnesota to be aware of this change,” said Hennen. For more information regarding crop acreage reporting deadlines, producers are encouraged to contact their local FSA office or visit http://www.fsa.usda.gov/

Saturday morning October 27th, a safety drill sponsored by Vestas, was held at the windmill farm south of Dodge Center. Vestas is the company that operates and maintains the wind turbines at the windmill farm. Emergency response units from Hayfield and Dodge Center Fire Departments along with Dodge Center and Hayfield Ambulances responded to participate in the drill. The Dodge County Emergency Manager and the Dodge County Sheriff's Office also participated. Vestas employees set up a scenario at one of the wind mill towers simulating an employee injured in the tower. 911 was called by a Vestas employee in the tower and the injured person (which was actually a fire department training dummy) was lowered to the bottom of the tower by a harness and winch system that is part of Vestas safety equipment. Emergency responders arrived and assisted on the scene. When the drill was complete, a debriefing was held to answer questions. The safety drill was conducted to demonstrate to the responders Vestas safety equipment and safety procedures so they would be accustomed to the location of the wind mills and the equipment that Vestas employees use. Vestas will hold regular drills in the future to provide ongoing training with area Fire Departments, Ambulance Services and the Sheriff's Office.
