they provide the most comprehensive coverage. Plans M and N, the two newest options, are cost sharing plans that have cheaper premiums which make them appealing to healthier retirees who don’t use as much health care. If, however, you live in Massachusetts, Minnesota or Wisconsin you have different standardized Medigap plans that you can buy. For more information on the different types of plans, call Medicare at 800-633-4227 and ask them to mail you a free copy of the “Choosing a Medigap Policy” guide (publication 02110), or see medicare.gov/pubs/pdf/02110.pdf. How to Choose To choose a policy, consider your health status and family medical history. The differences among plans can be small and rather confusing so you’ll need to do some homework to pick a plan that works best for you. To help you choose, use the Medigap online search tool at medicare.gov, and click on “Supplements & Other Insurance” at the top of the page, then on “How to Compare Medigap Policies.” This tool will breakdown what each plan covers along with premium cost ranges, and lists the companies that offer them in your area. Since all Medigap policies with the same letter must cover the exact same benefits, you should shop for the cheapest policy. You’ll get the best price if you sign up within six months after enrolling in Medicare Part B. During this open-enrollment period, an insurer cannot refuse to sell you a policy or charge you more because of your health. You also need to be aware of the three pricing methods which will affect your costs. Medigap policies are usually sold as either “attained-age” policies which are premiums that start low but increase as you get older. “Issue-age” policies that increase prices due to inflation, not age. These policies may start out a little more expensive than attainedage policies but generally have few rate increases over time. And “community-rate” policies, where everyone in an area is charged the same premium regardless of age. Issue-age and community-rated policies will usually save you money in the long-run. No Drug Coverage You also need to know that Medigap policies do not cover prescription drugs, so if you don’t have drug coverage, you need to consider buying a separate Medicare Part D drug plan too. You can compare plans and cost at medicare.gov/find-a-plan. Also note that Medigap plans do not cover vision or dental care, hearing aids or long-term care, either. Alternative Option Instead of getting original Medicare, plus a Medigap policy and a separate Part D drug plan, you could sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan that provides all-in-one coverage. These plans, which are sold by insurance companies, are generally available through HMOs and PPOs. To find and compare Advantage plans visit medicare.gov/find-aplan. If you need help, contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), which provides free Medicare counseling. See shiptalk.org, or call 800-677-1116 to locate a counselor in your area.

Prairie Meadows Dining Room 800 5th Ave NE, Kasson Your presence is your gift.

Happy 90th birthday from your loving family.

The Friends of the Library Books and Beyond monthly event will feature historian Michael Eckers on Monday, April 8th at 7:15 pm. in the Kasson Public Library.

UPCOMING WEDDING

Eckers has developed a new persona of a war correspondent flying bomber missions with the Mighty Eighth Air Force against the German Luftwaffe in World War II. Many people know Michael Eckers for his books and talks on the Civil War, Dakota Conflict of 1862, and dressing as General Sibley. But with this new persona of a WWII war correspondent he is adding yet another chapter in United State history for the public to enjoy. Please plan on joining the Friends of the Library for this interesting evening on World War II. Refreshments will be served.

The Minnesota Farm Bureau Foundation Ag Cab Lab display is made possible through the support of many businesses, organizations and individuals who recognize the importance of sharing the farm story with consumers. AgStar Financial Services donated $10,000 as part of the AgStar Fund for Rural America at the unveiling of the exhibit at the Minnesota Childrenʼs Museum in Rochester. The Farm/Ag Cab Lab four-month exhibit opened on March 27. Pictured left to right accepting the donation are Minnesota Farm Bureau vice president Duane Alberts, Minnesota Farm Bureau Ag Cab Lab Coordinator Jeff Beckman, Marty Kviener and Nate Reid of AgStar. (Submitted photo.)

The Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) unveiled the Ag Cab Lab and Farm Exhibit at the Minnesota Children’s Museum - Rochester. The exhibit includes the Ag Cab Lab – 4-Wheel Drive Tractor, an interactive barn and farming area, a farm book corner and My American Farm kiosk donated by DuPont Pioneer. Ag Cab Lab The Ag Cab Lab – 4Wheel Drive Tractor looks and sounds like a tractor. The Ag Cab Lab places viewers “at the controls” inside the cab so they can “drive” the tractor in the field. Museum attendees can start the tractor and drive it for 90 seconds while the tractor works the field pulling a disc.

“The Ag Cab Lab allows ‘drivers’ to gain a better understanding of what we do on our farms and ranches,” said Minnesota Farm Bureau President Kevin Paap. “Consumers are hungry to learn about what we do to produce their food, fiber and fuel, and the Ag Cab Lab is an interactive way to communicate with them.” My American Farm The My American Farm kiosk features educational games from the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture’s website. The site, resources and kiosk are made possible through the generous support of title sponsor, DuPont Pioneer. Free My American Farm resources, games and activities are available at myamericanfarm.org.

The Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) was awarded a My American Farm kiosk at the American Farm Bureau Federation’s recent Joint National Leadership and Young Farmers & Ranchers Conference in Arizona. Malissa Fritz from Farmington, the winner of the kiosk, was selected through tweets posted to the social media site, Twitter. The farm exhibit will be on display for four months beginning March 27. The exhibit is sponsored by the Minnesota Farm Bureau Foundation and the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation in partnership with Case IH, Minnesota Corn Growers, Minnesota Soybean Research & Promotion Council, AgStar Financial Services, Dodge County Farm Bureau, Mower County Farm Bureau, Seneca, SEMA and Minnesota Ag Group. IRS Releases the Dirty Dozen Tax Scams for 2013 The Dirty Dozen listing, compiled by the IRS each year, lists a variety of common scams taxpayers can encounter at any point during the year. Illegal scams can lead to significant penalties and interest and possible criminal prosecution. Here are some of the Dirty Dozen tax scams for 2013: Phishing Phishing is a scam typically carried out with the help of unsolicited email or a fake website that poses as a legitimate site to lure in potential victims and prompt them to provide valuable personal and financial information. If you receive an unsolicited email that appears to be from either the IRS or an organization closely linked to the IRS, such as the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), report it by sending it to phishing@irs.gov. It is important to keep in mind the IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. Return Preparer Fraud About 60 percent of taxpayers will use tax professionals this year to prepare their tax returns. Most return preparers provide honest service to their clients. But some unscrupulous preparers prey on unsuspecting taxpayers, and the result can be refund fraud or identity theft. It is important to choose carefully when hiring an individual or firm to prepare your return. The IRS also has created a new web page to assist taxpayers. For tips about choosing a preparer, red flags, details on preparer qualifications and information on how and when to make a complaint, visit www.irs.gov/chooseataxpro. Remember: Taxpayers are legally responsible for what’s on their tax return even if it is prepared by someone else. Make sure the preparer you hire is up to the task. “Free Money” from the IRS & Tax Scams Involving Social Security Flyers and advertisements for free money from the IRS, suggesting that the taxpayer can file a tax return with little or no documentation, have been appearing in community churches around the country. These schemes promise refunds to people who have little or no income and normally don’t have a tax filing requirement – and are also often spread by word of mouth as unsuspecting and well-intentioned people tell their friends and relatives. Scammers prey on low income individuals and the elderly and members of church congregations with bogus promises of free money. Con artists falsely claim that refunds are available even if the victim went to school decades ago. In the end, the victims discover their claims are rejected. There are also a number of tax scams involving Social Security. For example, scammers have been known to lure the unsuspecting with promises of non-existent Social Security refunds or rebates. In another situation, a taxpayer may really be due a credit or refund but uses inflated information to complete the return. Beware: Intentional mistakes of this kind can result in a $5,000 penalty. Impersonation of Charitable Organizations Another long-standing type of abuse or fraud is scams that occur in the wake of significant natural disasters. Following major disasters, it’s common for scam artists to impersonate charities to get money or private information from well-intentioned taxpayers. Some scammers operating bogus charities may contact people by telephone or email to solicit money or financial information. They may even directly contact disaster victims and claim to be working for or on behalf of the IRS to help the victims file casualty loss claims and get tax refunds.

This could result in repaying the erroneous refunds, including interest and penalties, and in some cases, even prosecution. Additionally, some taxpayers are filing excessive claims for the fuel tax credit. Farmers and other taxpayers who use fuel for off-highway business purposes may be eligible for the fuel tax credit. But other individuals have claimed the tax credit although they were not eligible. Fraud involving the fuel tax credit is considered a frivolous tax claim and can result in a penalty of $5,000. Falsely Claiming Zero Wages Filing a phony information return is an illegal way to lower the amount of taxes an individual owes. Typically, a Form 4852 (Substitute Form W2) or a “corrected” Form 1099 is used as a way to improperly reduce taxable income to zero. The taxpayer may also submit a statement rebutting wages and taxes reported by a payer to the IRS. Sometimes, fraudsters even include an explanation on their Form 4852 that cites statutory language on the definition of wages or may include some reference to a paying company that refuses to issue a corrected Form W-2 for fear of IRS IRAs FDIC Insured for $250,000.00 retaliation. Taxpayers should resist any temptation to participate in any variations of this scheme. Filing this type of return may result in a $5,000 penalty. Disguised Corporate Ownership Third parties are improperly used to request employer identification numbers and form corporations that obscure the true ownership of the business. These entities can be used to underreport income, claim fictitious deductions, avoid filing tax returns, participate in listed transactions and facilitate money laundering and financial crimes. The IRS is working with state authorities to identify these entities and bring the owners into compliance with the law. Misuse of Trusts For years, unscrupulous promoters have urged taxpayers to transfer assets into trusts. While there are legitimate uses of trusts in tax and estate planning, some highly questionable transactions promise reduction of income subject to tax, deductions for personal expenses and reduced 203 W.
