Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mindbending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Minnesota department of natural resources DNR reminds county residents of deer feeding ban Feeding deer is prohibited in four counties of southeastern Minnesota. In Dodge, Goodhue, Olmsted, and Wabasha counties it is illegal to put out food that may attract white-tailed deer, said the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The ban was put in place early in 2011 to reduce the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), which was found in one deer harvested late in 2010 near Pine Island. Extensive sampling since then has found no other deer in the area with CWD. CWD is a fatal brain disease of deer, elk, and moose. Though it is not known exactly how CWD is transmitted, it is thought to be primarily passed from animal to animal by infectious agents in feces, urine or saliva. Concentrating deer around feed has the potential to spread the disease to healthy animals. By prohibiting feeding, deer will be more dispersed and the opportunity for disease transmission is reduced. People who feed birds or small mammals in the four counties should do so in a manner that precludes access by deer, such as by placing the food at least six feet above ground level. Food placed as a result of normal agricultural practices is generally exempted from this rule; however, livestock owners are advised to take steps that minimize deer access to forage.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

The Old Pop-Up Tent Trailer The old pop-up, 1991 Jayco tent trailer sits in my driveway, sometimes screamin’ at me for use. It’s had plenty of use through the years; these are its senior years. Don’t make it out much these days. Still, it’s function-able, a comfortable place to sleep, a furnace that never fails, an oven top that still boils water. The dings of hail are medals of honor upon its roof. Its MVP years were when the kids were too young for summer jobs, young enough to be thrilled with campfires, campfire stories, campfire food, young enough to enjoy the wonderful campgrounds and provide the memories all kids should have. And they did. A good summer of camping is best preceded with springtime planning, where

reservations are made that you commit to. Without commitment, you might just stay home and mow the lawn. We had a few summers where this fine RV (really valuable) Jayco made 10-12 trips each summer, a dozen times where we fished, saw the Black Hills, got rained on hard and sometimes even sought shelter in the campground bathrooms. A tent trailer provides a good Plan B when rain happens. Plan B is a game of cards while the rain dances on the roof. Serious stuff… Go Fish, Uno, Spades and Hearts! Intense competition! But kids grow and summer jobs become the focus. Every kid likes makin’ money! And then they move away. The old trailer and me get lonely. We still pop up once a year for the annual Cousin Reunion in South Dakota. This old cabin on wheels still tows smooth, sets up and expands to give just a few more magnificent memories. Its senior years are golden as the rest. In my RV Hall of Fame, the old 1991 Jayco pop-up tent trailer has earned its spot. Nuff said!

PAMPER YOUR PETS!!!!

Dogs love fresh baked goods at Leashes & Leads Beggar's Bakery Michele Wencl is a baker. Her customers are humans, but a majority of the treats she bakes are for their pets. She runs Beggar's Bakery at Leashes & Leads located at 6214 14th Street N.W., Byron (visible up on the hill from Highway 14). Michele Wencl is serious about her baking-for pets. She uses human grade ingredients so the gourmet doggie donuts, wheat free cheesy bears, paw shaped candy, banana pup cakes and peanut butter biscuits are edible for pet owners too. The peanut butter biscuits

come in a large and small size and are the most popular treat (for the pets). It's quite evident Michele has been very clever in naming her pet treats such as the lollipaw, Grrrnola bites and the puppy conversation hearts for Valentine's Day. Each has a message like "Woof" or "I Bark You". There are the after dinner doggie mints made of mint and parsley. Then there are Barkday Cakes (translation-birthday cakes). Michele makes a couple of those a week with the main ingredients of unbleached flour,

pureed banana or applesauce. She uses no sugar or other preservatives so for sweetness she will use a limited amount of either honey or molasses. "We want the treats to be healthy for the pets," said Michele. The treats are made in Beggar's Bakery. Before those treats get on the shelves Michele has done her homework and experiments at home. She researches on the internet and has even tapped ideas from the Rachel Ray television show. Once she experiments with a recipe and has it fine tuned the sample is sent in to be tested in a lab so when the product goes on the shelf all the exact ingredients and percentages of ingredients are on the back of the package. Michele had a beagle in 2002 with many allergies. She had to be selective about what was in the dog food she was buying. "It was amazing the ingredients I found in pet foods that are not good for dogs with allergies," said Michele. At that point she realized it was important to know what ingredients were in a product and not just look at the name brand. "Nutrition is very important," said Michele. She then started baking dog treats for family and friends. There was an opening at Beggar's Bakery last July and it turned out to be a perfect fit for Michele and Leashes & Leads. " One thing about baking for pets is they are not as finicky about their treats," grinned Michele. Treats are available at the Mantorville Farms website

Beggar's Bakery baker Michele Wencl shows off one of the barkday cakes which happens to have the name of her dog "Mauer", named after the MN. Twins Joe Mauer.

Beggar's Bakery has a variety of treats for spoiling your pet or maybe a "grand-dog".

A batch of doggie biscuits are about to go into the oven. Baker Michele Wencl said they are baked no differently than human baked goods.

If you need to satisfy your own sweet tooth Beggar's Bakery also has fudge, jelly bellies and fresh baked chocolate chip cookies to go with coffee, hot chocolate and cappuccino. With the healthy ingredients in pet treats such as doggie donuts you can even share one with your pet!

By: Beth Twaddle Editor’s note: Beth is a 2006 Kasson-Mantorville High School graduate who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology. As a pet owner, providing proper nutrition for your pet is extremely important. With so many brands claiming that their pet food is the most nutritious and balanced, it’s hard to know which one to choose. Feeding your pet a proper diet will benefit not only them, but you too! Poorly formulated pet foods contain substantially more “filler.” Fillers are lowquality, indigestible ingredients that make the pet feel full without providing real nutritional value. Fillers pass through the body without being digested, resulting in more feces for you to pick up. High-quality foods skip the fillers and only use nutritional ingredients, resulting in much less feces. A good diet will keep your cat or dog’s coat strong and soft and their skin healthy, which means less shedding and dander left behind. Also it will help prevent uncomfortable dry and itchy skin for your pet. Well balanced pet foods also prevent health issues ranging from minor illnesses to major diseases, keeping vet bills down. When you ask someone the average life span of a cat for example, they typically say anywhere from 10-15 years. With a high quality well-balanced diet, that number could be closer to 20-25 years of life for your furry friend! You may be wondering if your current brand of pet food is good or what foods are considered good. It’s easy to believe that a food is great for your pets based on the claims made by the pet food company’s commercials, advertising verbiage, and imagery on the bags of pet food sold. Unfortunately, this information can be misleading. To find the best food, go straight to the natural food section in the pet food department. Most of these foods are going to be a healthy, well-balanced diet for your dog or cat. You may experience a bit of “sticker shock” when you first check out the natural food section but keep in mind that natural food is often the same price if not cheaper in the long run because since it is not full of fillers your pet does not need to eat as much each meal. The best way to find out which foods are the healthiest for your pets is to learn how to read the ingredients label. That way you can weed out any biases from advertising and people’s personal preferences. There are many informational

websites and books you can read to learn all about it. Here are a few basic tips. Protein sources should be the top ingredients. Acceptable protein sources include chicken, beef, turkey, lamb, etc. for dogs and cats and also plant protein for dogs. Be cautious though, because these protein sources can be labeled in different ways. Chicken ingredients, for example, are frequently labeled as chicken meal, chicken, chicken by-product, or chicken flavoring. Chicken meal is chicken flesh and skin that’s been dehydrated and ground into a powder. It contains approximately 6-8% moisture and 65% protein. “Chicken” is the flesh of the chicken. It has approximately 65-70% moisture and 13% protein. Chicken by-product could be any part of the chicken such as flesh, bone, feathers, intestines, beaks, and feet. Chicken flavoring is typically artificial flavoring and contains no actual chicken. Chicken and chicken meal are the best options for pets. It’s also good to avoid by-products, which are low on nutrients. Like any other business, pet food companies try to keep their costs low. They use by-products because it’s much cheaper. Grains are something to avoid as well, especially corn. Few grains have much nutritional value for dogs and cats. Grains have even been linked to allergies, urinary issues and other health issues in cats and dogs. How do you choose from the multiple protein sources for your dogs and cats? One is not necessarily better than the other, so it’s best to choose whichever your pet likes most! Things to keep in mind when choosing: some pets may be allergic or have digestive issues with some protein sources; some research has suggested that fish protein sources are not healthy for long term use; dogs can benefit from a vegetarian diet and research has even suggested that it can lengthen their life expectancy; cats are some of the purist carnivores on the planet and would suffer from a vegetarian diet; cats benefit the most from a wet food diet which can help prevent urinary problems such as UTIs and crystal formation; cats should not be fed a dog food formula because it lacks the

proper levels of taurine, a necessary organic acid that cats require for life. Similarly, it is not recommend for dogs to be fed a cat food formula. Once you know how to read an ingredients label and know what to look for, feeding your pets a healthy well balanced diet is easy and results in a healthier and happier pet! Your pets will look and feel healthier and you will be happier too with less shedding, waste, and vet bills! Your pets will thank you for it!

Won’t ya’ be my neighbor? Munchkin here! And that is exactly what I am, a little munchkin! I am the cutest little two year old Toy Poodle you have ever seen. I only weigh about four pounds! I was found outside at Christmas time. Luckily someone found me. It is COLD out there for a little fella like me! I love to cuddle and be held and carried around. My foster mama says I'm a big baby. I do well with older respectful kids who know how to be gentle. I am very fragile! I am housetrained for the most part, but I need to be let outside often. I love to cuddle with other dogs, but I ® also would be okay as being the only dog. I am looking for my forever home. A place where I can be cuddled and loved forever. Munchkin is neutered and up to date with shots, is heartworm and intestinal parasite free and microchipped. Train / vehicle accident in Dodge Center

For more information on the animals below, call Camp Companion at 951-7801. www.campcompanion.org Gloria is about a year old. She is a gorgeous tabby girl who was rescued from a farm where she was sleeping curled up with chickens to keep warm. Gloria gets along with people and hasn't met a person that she doesn't like. Actually, Gloria doesn't just get along with people- she absolutely adores people and will do anything to be close to her person. She is a petite girl and likes to climb on her person’s shoulders to be as close as she can. Gloria is fine with other cats after a proper introduction and other animals don’t bother her. All adoptable pets have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. For more information about adoption, please contact Camp Companion at 507-9517801, www.campcompanion.org, or find us on Facebook!

WELCOME...ATTORNEY TIMOTHY A. WOESSNER as an associate to Weber & Leth, Attorneys at Law. Tim is a 1999 graduate of Byron High School and earned his law degree in 2008 from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul,

At about 2:50 p.m. Monday, February 4th, the Dodge County Sheriff ’s Office received a 911 call of a vehicle/train crash at Dodge County Road “H”. Dodge County Sheriff ’s deputies, Dodge Center Ambulance, Dodge Center Fire Department and Minnesota State Patrol responded to the scene. The Canadian Pacific train was west bound just leaving Dodge Center. A 2005 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Mallory Myer of Hayfield was west bound on County Road “H”, had stopped at the railroad crossing stop sign, started to cross the tracks and was hit by the west bound train. There was no one else in the vehicle with Mallory and no one was injured on the train. The vehicle was pushed into the ditch. Mallory got out of her vehicle on her own and walked up to the road. She was transported to St. Mary’s in Rochester to be checked over. The crash is under investigation by the Dodge County Sheriff ’s Office.
