1 can (28 oz.) diced tomatoes, undrained 1 T. chili powder 1/4 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. pepper 1 c. shredded Cheddar cheese Cook noodles according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, cook beef, onion, celery and garlic over medium heat until meat is no longer pink and vegetables are tender; drain. Add tomatoes, chili powder, salt and pepper; mix well. Cook and stir for 10 minutes. Drain noodles; stir into beef mixture and heat through. Remove from the heat. Sprinkle with cheese; cover and let stand for 5 minutes or until cheese is melted. Yield: 8 servings.

1/4 c. butter or margarine 1/4 c. all-purpose flour 2 c. milk
2 pkg. (2 1/2 oz. each) dried beef, cut into strips 4 slices bread, toasted and halved
In a microwave-safe bowl, heat butter on high for 45 seconds or until melted. Stir in flour until smooth. Gradually stir in milk. Microwave, uncovered, on high for 3-4 minutes or until thickened, stirring every minutes. Stir in beef; cook on high for 1 minute or until heated through. Serve on toast.

Free Family Fun Day rescheduled Due to inclement weather on Sunday, January 27th the Free Family Fun Day Speak-out event has been rescheduled for Sunday, February 10th from 35:30 p.m. That afternoon the KM Early Childhood Initiative and Community Education will host a “Speak Outâ€? forum on the state of early childhood in our community. The event will include a presentation of “Did You Know?‌Valuable Information for all Families/Parents with Children, Newborn and Beyondâ€? which will include statistics, developmental information, and resources available to parents in the Kasson-Mantorville area. In addition, Tina Fiegel, author of the Nurtured Heart Approach will share helpful information for parents or caregivers searching for new ideas, strategies and techniques in the area of discipline for their children. Dear Savvy Senior, What’s the best, conflict-free way to divvy up my personal possessions to my kids after I’m gone? I have a lot of jewelry, art, family heirlooms and antique furniture, and five grown kids that don’t always see eye-toeye on things. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Seeking Peace Dear Seeking, Divvying up personal possessions among adult children or other loved ones is a task that many parents dread. Deciding who should get what without showing favoritism, hurting someone’s feeling or causing a feud can be difficult, even for close-knit families who enter the process with the best of intentions. Here are some tips to consider that can help you divide your stuff with minimal conflict. Problem Areas For starters, you need to be aware that it’s usually the small, simple items of little monetary value that cause the most conflicts. This is because the value we attach to the small personal possessions is usually sentimental or emotional, and because the simple items are the things that most families fail to talk about. Family battles can also escalate over whether things are being divided fairly by monetary value. So for items of higher value like your jewelry, antiques and art, consider getting an appraisal to assure fair distribution. To locate an appraiser, visit appraisers.org. Ways to Divvy The best solution for passing along your personal possessions is for you to go through your house with your kids (or other heirs) either separately or all at once. Open up cabinets, drawers and closets, and go through boxes in the attic to find out which items they would like to inherit and why. They may have some emotional attachment to something you’re not aware of. If more than one child wants the same thing, you will have the ultimate say. Then you need to sit down and make a list of who gets what on paper, signed, dated and referenced in your will. You can revise it anytime you want. You may also want to consider writing an additional letter or create an audio tape, CD or DVD that further explains your intentions. You can also specify a strategy for divvying up the rest of your property. Some fair and reasonable options include: • Take turns choosing: Use a round-robin process where family members take turns picking out items they would like to have. If who goes first becomes an issue, they can always flip a coin or draw straws. Also, to help simplify things, break down the dividing process room-by-room, versus tackling the entire house. • Have a family auction: Give each person involved the same amount of “play money,â€? or use “virtual pointsâ€? to bid on the items they want. This can also be done online at eDivvyup.com, a website for families and estate executors that provides a fair and easy way to distribute of personal property. For more ideas, see “Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate?â€? A resource created by the University of Minnesota Extension Service that offers a detailed workbook or interactive CD for $12.50, and DVD for $30, that gives pointers to help families discuss property distribution and lists important factors to keep in mind that can help avoid conflict. The naval engagement pitted two experienced captains and experienced crews against each other: Captain John Winslow (USN) and Captain Raphael Semmes (CSN). The backgrounds of the respective commanding officers, and naval tactics, ordnance, and ship technology will be considered as well as the significance of the battle and international issues. Tom Ostrom is a retired history-geography-anthropology instructor from Rochester Community and Technical College. He does a political commentary show on KROC-AM Radio in Rochester on Tuesday and Friday mornings with news anchor Andy Brownell. Tom is also authored several books on U.S. Coast Guard and Naval history. The Old School Cafe kitchen will open at 6:15 p.m. for those who wish to eat and the roundtable discussion will begin at 7:00 p.m. Civil War Roundtables are sponsored by the Dodge County Historical Society. The Mantorville Area Chamber of Commerce will be holding its annual meeting on February 7 at the Mantorville Art Guild Gallery on Main Street. Meeting begins at 7:00PM. Current President Terry Eckstein will present a brief recap of 2012 Chamber sponsored events and outline plans for 2013. Nominations for board positions will be made at this meeting. The Mantorville Area Chamber of Commerce works to promote the community by sponsoring a variety of services and activities. The Chamber, in co-operation with the Mantorville EDA, maintains a web site (www.mantorvilletourism.com) with links to local businesses, events and attractions. Brochures, walking tours and MantorMoney gift certificates are available through Chamber businesses. The Dodge County Expo, Easter Egg Hunt, Olde Tyme Days, Marigold Days, Fall Festival and Olde Fashioned Christmas are a few of the activities that the Chamber hosts or promotes. The Chamber meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Mantorville Art Guild Gallery (521 North Main Street). BJ is a ten year old black and silver Miniature Schnauzer. BJ might be getting up there in years but does not show it. BJ currently weighs 14.5 pounds and should weigh about 12 pounds. Her foster mom and BJ are working on that! BJ likes to play and run like a dog half her age. Her favorite toys are squeak toys and bones. She is also happy to just run and play outside. BJ likes to cuddle as close as she can. Her favorite is when she is on her back and someone rubs her belly. She gets excited, covers her eyes and smiles! She is a friendly dog and likes all people and dogs. BJ is ® also housetrained. She can be talkative and at times likes to sing in the house. After being reminded to be quiet she usually quiets down pretty quickly. BJ is spayed and up to date with shots, was also treated for heartworm and has fully recovered. Country Pleasures Cafe owner to have surgery To all of our loyal customers: as of February 8 we will be temporarily closed for about three to four weeks as the owner Denise Hazuka undergoes surgery.
