You ask the Senior question
We find the Savvy answer How Medicare Covers Diabetes Dear Savvy Senior, What does Medicare cover when it comes to diabetes? I’m 65 and have pre-diabetes, and would like to find out what all is covered. Fat Albert Dear Albert, Medicare actually offers a wide range of coverage to help beneficiaries who have diabetes, as well as those who are at risk of getting it – but they don’t cover everything. Here’s a breakdown of what Medicare covers when it comes to diabetes services and supplies along with some other tips that can help you save. • Doctor’s services: If you’re a Medicare beneficiary, Medicare Part B will pay 80 percent of the cost of all doctor’s office visits that are related to diabetes. You are responsible for paying the remaining 20 percent after you’ve met your annual 2013 $147 Part B deductible. • Screenings: If you don’t currently have diabetes, but you do have pre-diabetes or some other health conditions that put you at risk of getting it – such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and triglycerides, are overweight, or have a family history of diabetes – Medicare will pay 100 percent of the cost of up to two diabetes screenings every year. • Education: If you have diabetes, Medicare covers 80 percent of the cost of self-management training (after you meet your Part B deductible) to teach you how to successfully manage your diabetes. • Supplies and medications: Eighty percent of the cost of glucose monitors, test strips and lancets (100 per month if you use insulin, or 33 per month if you don’t), glucose control solutions and insulin (if you use an insulin pump) are covered by Medicare Part B, after you’ve met your deductible. If, however, you inject insulin with a syringe, Medicare’s Part D prescription drug benefit may help pay your insulin costs and the supplies needed to inject it – if you have a plan. Part D plans also cover most other diabetic medications too. You’ll need to check your plan for details. • Nutrition: Medicare will pick up the entire tab for medical nutrition therapy, which teaches you how to adjust your diet so you can better manage your condition. You’ll need a doctor’s referral to get this service. • Blood sugar tests: Also known as a hemoglobin A1c test, this checks your average blood sugar level over the past three months to determine how well your diabetes is being controlled. Medicare covers this test when your doctor orders it. • Foot exams: Since foot problems are common among people with diabetes, Medicare also covers 80 percent of foot care every six months for diabetics with diabetes-related nerve damage, and therapeutic shoes for people with severe diabetic foot disease. Orthopedic shoes are not covered. • Eye exams: Because eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and cataracts are more common in diabetics, 80 percent of dilated eye exams are covered each year, but eye exams for glasses are not. For more information, call Medicare at 800-633-4227 and ask them to mail you a free copy of the “Medicare’s Coverage of Diabetes Supplies & Services” booklet (publication 11022), or see medicare.gov/pubs/pdf/11022.pdf. Other Insurance If you have a Medigap (Medicare supplemental insurance) policy, it may pay some of the costs that Medicare doesn’t cover. Call your plan’s benefits administrator for more information. Or, if you’re in a Medicare Advantage plan (like an HMO or PPO), your plan must give you at least the same diabetes coverage as original Medicare does, but it may have different rules. You’ll need to check your policy for details. Financial Assistance If you’re income is low, and you can’t afford your Medicare out-of-pocket costs, you may be able to get help through Medicare Savings Programs. Call your local Medicaid office for eligibility information. Also, find out if you are eligible for “Extra Help” which helps Medicare Part D beneficiaries with their medication expenses. Visit www.ssa.gov/prescriptionhelp or call Social Security (800-772-1213) to learn more. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

greater percentage of its GDP to health care than any other country, according to a report released by Anytime Fitness. In fact, $147 billion a year is spent in direct medical costs related to obesity. If that money were to be reallocated, America could invest in five hundred thousand newly built homes, 1.6 million full college scholarships, or 35 billion healthy meals. The economic impact of obesity extends beyond rising health care costs to include $153 billion per year in lost productivity to companies, and $1 billion per year in medical care for active duty members. These statistics are part of the third annual Anytime Fitness "Weight of the Union" report, which examines the macro implications of obesity on the nation’s health, and provides recommendations to curb the growing epidemic. Anytime Fitness is the world’s fastest-growing fitness franchise, with nearly 2,100 locations in more than a dozen countries. “We’ve reached an unhealthy tipping point in America,” says CEO and co-founder of Anytime Fitness Chuck Runyon. “The report is a sobering reminder that the state of the nation’s health is still very weak, but there are meaningful steps we can take towards reclaiming our health – chief among them: increasing incentives to encourage and reward physical activity.” In December, 2012, Runyon spearheaded a coalition of Minnesota-based fitness clubs – “FitMN” – which proposed: •Providing tax incentives for businesses to pay for fitness club memberships for their employees. •Allowing individuals and families to use pre-tax dollars from their Healthcare Spending Accounts (HSAs) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) to pay for fitness club memberships •Allowing expenses an individual incurs for wellness services, in the form of dues, fees or membership expenses (up to $500 per individual or $1,000 per family annually) to be subtracted from the individual’s adjusted gross income. Money really does influence behavior. An internal Anytime Fitness case study concluded that from October 2011-October 2012, members in MN and WI who were reimbursed $20 per month as a reward for visiting the gym 12 or more times per month, exercised four times as often compared to members who did not receive $20. Members who received $20 reimbursements averaged 12.4 workouts per month, whereas, members who were not reimbursement averaged 3.1 workouts per month. In 2012, Anytime Fitness members saved nearly $5 million in reimbursements from their benefits providers, a 25% increase compared to the previous year.

Hot Air Ballooning by Randy Carlsen
Like driving a car with no brakes or steering wheel! Russ Lucas bounced the hot air balloon over a light post in front the of the K-M Middle School New Year's day. The basket dragged along the ground a short distance until the crew on the ground could get into position with the ropes. It was the perfect landing. Russ Lucas of Dodge Center owns Claremont Cloud Dancers, a business that gives hot air balloon rides. Russ does some substitute teaching at Triton, but other than that, says, "I don't have a real job. His significant other, Kay Fate, is vice president, the real boss and champagne chiller. Russ Lucas says he has been adventuresome since birth. He first started flying airplanes, dropped sky divers and even sky dived out of a hot air balloon. He took to hot air balloons some seven years ago. "Any day I can fly in a hot air balloon is a good day," said Russ. What does Russ Lucas like most about hot air balloons? "I like the challenge of flying them. Imagine driving a car with no brakes or steering wheel," said Lucas. The balloon lifts off when winds are not more than six miles per hour. The 5,000 pound balloon is 90,000 cubic feet and measures nearly 10 stories from the ground. At 4,200 feet the balloon will travel at approximately 15 miles an hour. With no brakes and no steering wheel the balloon is controlled by ascending and descending and calculating the wind at the different levels. Common questions asked are, "What are we going to see?" and "When is the best time to fly? "Ever seen the top of a tree?" said Russ to a customer. He might tickle the top of a tree with a basket or "touch" or drop down and "touch" the water in a stream. The best time to fly is one half hour before sunrise or two hours before sunset. Last year Russ returned from a 10 month stint in Cappadocia, Turkey where he piloted a 425,000 cubic foot balloon that could take up to 24 passengers. By comparison, the balloon he has at home can take up to three passengers and himself. Cappadocia is a tourist area in the center of Turkey and known as one of top areas in the world for hot air ballooning. The area is known for its incredible landscapes, geological formations, volcanic rock formations and history. Russ said churches and houses carved into the rocks can only be seen as the balloon climbs to 1,000 feet. On New Year's Day temps dipped to a season low 12 below. That did not deter Russ and another guest from taking to the skies just before sunrise. As the hot air bal-
loon traveled west they dipped down and came within 100 yards of Russ' home’s rooftop. The flight ended at the west end of Kasson. Russ looked at several landing options before deciding to drop down in front of the middle school. New Year's day was a good one for Russ Lucas. He was able to fly. If a hot air balloon ride is on your bucket list contact the Claremont Cloud Dancers at (507)351-7001 or go to their web site at: www.ccdballoonco.com.
Russ Lucas guides his hot air balloon over Kasson.
New Year's Day brought a clear sky, below zero temps and the perfect opportunity for Russ Lucas to go for a hot air balloon ride.
A flight for a customer will last one hour, but plan on three to three-and-a-half hours for pre-flight preparations, taking down the balloon after flight and return transportation.
Set up and tear down requires a crew. New Year's Day Russ Lucas, president of the Claremont Cloud Dancers Balloon Co., took an early a.m. flight from Owatonna and landed in front of the K-M Middle School. At the left is crew member Billie Cowell and at the right, pilot Russ Lucas.

business directory Danny Linbo, Linbo Agency; good working relationship with Vernon Edda Mutual Fire Insurance Company Danny Linbo of Sargeant, MN started to sell crop insurance with his brother Kevin in 1985. He sold crop/hail insurance along with fire, wind liability. He partners with the Vernon Edda Mutual Fire Insurance Company to write the fire coverages of farm policies. He packages the policies through the Vernon Edda Company with the North Star Mutual Insurance Company and Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company. Danny runs the business out of his home and is working his way into full retirement. Son Kirk started with the company this year. "I like to get out and see the people," said Danny who considers himself more of a public relations person than salesman. The fire/wind insurance policy customers renew every three years, but renewing with the crop farmers is an annual ritual. Danny owned a grocery store in

Sargeant and sold out in 1994 because he could see the handwriting on the wall for the small town grocery business. He called it a good move on his part at that time. As a semi-retired insurance agent Danny has always worked out of his house and his son does the same. Danny served as the secretary/manager of Vernon Edda from 1994-2010 and is a board member. "The company goes back a long way," laughed Danny. "In that day you had to be Norwegian and able to speak it to get a policy." For some that might be hard to believe, but it's true. The Vernon Edda roots can be traced back to the late 1800's. April 1, 1874 the company was created and is one of the oldest of the 95 farm mutual insurance companies in the state of Minnesota. As settlers moved into the Vernon Township area they sought protection from the ravages of fire. Working together was necessary for survival so spreading out the losses among the settlers grew in popularity and the Vernon Edda Mutual
FINANCIAL SERVICES
Fire Insurance Company was formed. Vernon comes from the township and Edda means 'powerful'. The first records and policies were written in Norwegian and policy holders had to be of Norwegian descent. Of the 234 policy holders today a good percentage of them are of Norwegian descent, but that is not a requirement. The Vernon Township area is where the first policies were written. They have grown to serve the counties of Dodge, Mower, Olmsted, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Steele, Waseca and Winona. According to company manager Michelle Vigeland there are currently four agencies within those counties that are authorized to write policies with Vernon Edda. They are: Bryon Wolf, Claremont Agency, Claremont (507-528-2179) and Jay Klemmensen, Claremont Agency, Claremont (507-528-2179), Danny Linbo, Linbo Agency, Sargeant (507-5846881) and Kirk Linbo, Linbo Agency, Sargeant (507-259-4097), Dave Jorstad, Safeway Agency, Hayfield (507-477-3242), Joe Waugh, Safeway Agency, Mantorville (507-635-5949) and Brian Nystuen, C.O. Vernon Edda is licensed to write the fire peril portion of farm policies, which is a majority of their clients. They also write homeowner policies and partner with North Star Mutual Insurance Company and Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company to provide additional coverage for wind, hail, liability and inland marine. According to Vernon Edda company manager Michelle Vigeland, what makes Vernon Edda attractive is the fact that they are local and easily accessible to customers in a time of need. "We have a strong commitment to provide excellent customer service by providing adequate coverage, competitive rates and strong investments for a strong financial base," added Michelle. The fact that Vernon Edda Mutual Fire Insurance Company has been around 138 years says something about the stability of the company. Danny Linbo has sat on both sides of fence as director/manager and agent knows what makes Vernon Edda a successful company for so many years. "The agency and customers have been good to me," added Danny.

Mr. Timothy A. Woessner, born and raised in Byron and a 1999 graduate of Byron High School, has joined Weber & Leth, Attorneys at Law, with offices in Dodge Center and Kasson. Tim graduated from the University of Minnesota with a major in political science and minor in history. Tim worked for the Mayo Clinic two years prior to entering law school. He earned a law degree in 2008 from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul and returned home to begin practicing in the areas of administrative law, including licensing disputes involving state agencies; family law, including marital dissolutions, custody disputes, and adoptions; personal injury; and commercial litigation, including con-

He acts as a volunteer attorney with Legal Assistance of Olmsted County by donating legal services to indigent clients. He serves on the board of directors for Legal Assistance of Olmsted County as well as the Rochester Public School Foundation. Tim is currently a member of both the Dodge and Olmsted County Bar Associations and the Minnesota State Bar Association. Tim said he enjoys the everyday challenges in serving his clients as an attorney. "Every day is different and I like the idea of working with and

In June 2006 Attorney Melanie J. Leth, a KassonMantorville graduate, left a Twin Cities law practice to return to Dodge County. She started practicing at the Weber Law Office in 2006 and in 2008 Brian Weber and Melanie Leth became partners in Weber & Leth, Attorneys at Law.
