Welcome Welcome to the seventh Edinburgh Festival of Cycling. Our aim is to celebrate all aspects of cycling and this year is no different. This year is about pushing boundaries – physical, mental and cultural. Hear from record breakers Jenny Graham, the fastest woman around the world, and Karen Darke, human-powered speed record holder and Paralympic champion, on her quest to hand-cycle the 7 continents. We welcome back human rights activist and film producer, Shannon Galpin as she asks What would you be willing to risk in order to ride a bike? along with the Scottish premiere of her film Afghan Cycles. Jenny Tough invites you to think about pushing your own boundaries, and Monika Sattler broke what was widely perceived impossible, a woman to cycle the 3-week Vuelta at the same time as the men’s race. Or join a family picnic ride, intrepid photo expedition or discover the hidden tapestries of Edinburgh by bike. Be inspired by Rob Ainsley who takes you on a journey through Britain’s oddest bike rides, and Christopher Boyce telling us why Happiness is a road at least 10,000-miles long. We also offer you the chance to ride pro-cyclists’ dream machines on a closed road circuit, in collaboration with Cyclist magazine. Whether you are a hare or a tortoise, there is something for you in this year’s programme… Kim Harding, Festival Director. P.S. If you like our cover image, it is also available on limited edition t-shirts and prints, see EdFoC website for details.

HSBC Breeze ride for women: Russell Road zig zags to Stockbridge Times 1 9:00 - 21:30 VENUE 18 R ussell Road ramp,

EH12 5HY

HSBC Breeze is a programme of free, volunteer-led bike rides for women which runs across the UK. We aim to encourage and support more women to get on their bikes and ride, or to ride more. Breeze rides are relaxed, friendly and sociable and nobody is ever left behind. This ride heads to Stockbridge, mostly on cycle paths with a couple of onroad sections, where we will stop for a refreshing drink in Stockbridge before returning to the start. This is a lovely, fairly flat route, suitable for all bikes. Bring money for our refreshment stop, and if you do have a spare inner tube for your bike, please bring that, too. Firsttimers welcome! Full details and booking information via the EdFoC website Ticketing: Free, booking required Free Event

Jenny Tough - pushing boundaries Times 20:30 - 21:30 VENUE 15 Greyfriars Charteris Centre,

EH8 9RR

Jenny came into unsupported bike racing from solo touring. She dipped her toes into racing in the inaugural 2017 TransScotland race, cross-country from Inverness to Glasgow, nonstop, coming second overall as the only woman to take part. Later that year, she took on the Transcontintental Race, but was unsuccessful - a failure that still haunts her. She bounced back in 2018 to finish 2nd woman in the Transatlantic Way (TAW) race along the Atlantic coast of Ireland, riding >2000 km in just over 7 days, battling navigational challenges, relentless headwinds, swarms of midges, and finally Storm Hector. After only a few weeks of recovery, Jenny attempted the Silk Road Mountain Race, an epic off-road adventure across remote mountains and steppes of Kyrgyzstan, among a list of who-is-who in ultra-racing. She surprised herself – and the ultra bikepacking community - when she came home as the first woman. On the way, she encountered snow storms, warm local hospitality, river crossings, and friendship with her fellow racers. Come and hear Jenny’s tales of her racing, about pushing boundaries, learning from mistakes, and what makes her come back for more. Ticketing: Adult £11, Concession £9 3 Stop Press: double bill with The world at 15 mph(ish!), 19:00 - 20:00

Saturday 8 June

A Sunday in Hell Times 1 9:30 -21:45 Venue 22 Balerno Village Screen,

EH14 7DZ

For the 7th year running, Balerno Village Screen is bringing you a night of cycling related films. A Sunday in Hell is a Danish documentary film by Jørgen Leth about the 1976 Paris Roubaix road race over the cobbles of Northern France, the most famous and usually the most dramatic of the spring classics. Described as “arguably, the best film about professional cycling”, it shows the race from the perspective of participants, organizers and spectators. The narrow, cobbled tracks choke with dust on dry days and become slick and muddy in rain, a challenge for the riders to keep going without puncturing or crashing. Warning: there will be mud, and maybe some beer. Please reserve tickets in advance on https://balernovillagescreen.com/edfoc/ Ticketing: Free (donation), booking required

Belles on Bikes is a developing network of women’s cycling groups across Scotland. The Edinburgh Belles (http:// www.meetup.com/EdinburghBelles/) have been providing informal, friendly and relaxed rides for the last two years, with a membership of 400+ and growing. Š Andy Catlin

The event is intended to highlight the vulnerability of cyclists in traffic. Hence, the option of minimal clothing or nudity and why the event is held on public roads. A cyclist might as well be naked in traffic. It would be therefore pointless to hold it anywhere other than on the public highway. The World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) is intended as a protest against oil dependency, in favour of alternative means of transport. There is also a subtext of body positivism. For more details, see http://www.worldnakedbikeride.org/ Adults only (over 16). Free event Ticketing: Free Free Event

Karen Darke: Quest 79 Times 20:30 -21:30 VENUE 11 G rassmarket Centre, EH1 2QA Karen is somewhat of an expert in overcoming challenges- she was a keen runner and mountaineer before becoming paralysed in a rock-climbing accident and has since pursued alternative ways to access the outdoors – most passionately, by hand-cycle. Currently a full-time athlete with the British Paracycling Team, Karen became Paralympic Champion in the Rio 2016 Games, among many other achievements, and gained two Land Speed World Records for arm power in the Nevada desert in 2018. Karen’ current project, Quest 79, is to ride the 7 continents and fundraising for the Spinal Injuries Association, taking her through the wilderness of Patagonia,

along the Pacific Coast from Canada to Mexico, down Australia’s Murray River from source to sea, the River Ganges from high in the Himalayas, and through the mountains of Ethiopia. Her three books “If You Fall”, “Boundless”and “Quest 79: Find Your Inner Gold” are available at karendarke. com ‘Karen’s captivating story shines a bright light on the meaning of challenge, and on the limitless capabilities of the human spirit.’ Sir Ranulph Fiennes, polar explorer. “I am an addict, but there are far worse addictions! The combination of physical, social and mental benefits that cycling brings are what keep me turning the pedals… my love is to be outside, in beautiful places, with special friends, the wind in my hair, and the sense of freedom and inspiration that brings…” “What is life if it isn’t an adventure? RAD Monika: The first woman to ride the Vuelta a España route Times 19:00 -20:00 VENUE 15 Greyfriars Charteris Centre,

Monika Sattler, aka RAD Monika, is the first female in history to complete one of the toughest cycling challenges in the world, the 3,300 km Vuelta a España. Because she rode every stage on the same day as the professional men’s race – just hours ahead – she was under daily pressure to reach the finish line before the pros. The project seemed impossible, not only because of the distance and relentless time limits every day, but also because of the logistics, with the disbelief of others especially apparent in trying to get funding. Adventure Syndicate member Jenny Graham rode her way into the Guinness World Records last year, becoming the Fastest Woman to circumnavigate the world by bike. Completing her ride solo and unsupported, she covered 18,427 miles (ca. 29,655 km) in 124 days, knocking almost three weeks off the previous (supported) record of 144 days by Italy’s Paola Gianotti. Starting in Berlin on 16 June 2018, Jenny cycled 15 hours a day, often riding through the night when the roads were quieter. She managed an average of 156 miles (251 km) a day, keeping an average speed of 14 mph (23 km/h). The route took her across four continents and through 16 countries. Battling through tornados, bear country and Russian traffic, Jenny tells her story with a humorous take on the highs and lows. There will also be complementary speakers, focusing on Edinburgh in depth, with some challenge from progressive thinkers on how Edinburgh will become a “City fit for cycling”. Catalysts for change. As Transformation Area described further in the document, these are areas that Key Intersections will drive the transformation. Combined, they offer a reinforced identity of the city centre, they create a network of spaces. Locally, they produce a ripple out effect within character areas, allowing the transformation reach deep inside the neighbourhoods.

Play Together on Pedals Drop-In Session

Watermans Free Bike Check

Times 1 0:00-12:00 VENUE 21 Saughton Park, EH11 3HT

Times 11:00-14:00 VENUE 3 Dock Place, EH6 6LU

During our drop-in sessions, your child will be supported to have fun learning to ride a bike, beginning by learning to “scoot” on a balance bike. Then if they’re ready, they can progress onto a pedal bike. The sessions are delivered by fully trained and experienced Play Together on Pedals instructors. Once you’ve tried it as part of EdFoC, you can drop into more at our regular venues around the city! You don’t have to attend the full session and can “drop-in” at any time.

Watermans Solicitors is delighted to bring you a free bike check drop-in session in partnership with Singletrack Bikes and EdFoC. At our new office premises in Leith, the mechanics will check your bike over and do their best to fix minor problems on the spot. If there is something they can’t fix, they’ll let you know exactly what needs to be repaired and give you a rough estimate of the cost.

Sessions are aimed at children age 5 and under, and bikes and helmets are provided. Our instructors will happily help older children, too, but please bring along a working bike (two working brakes essential!), as the our bikes are sized for pre-school children. The emphasis is on fun and the sessions are delivered at a pace to suit your child. Ticketing: Free Free Event

What would you be willing to risk in order to ride a bike? Times 1 9:00 -20:00 VENUE 15 G reyfriars Charteris Centre,

EH8 9RR

What would you be willing to risk in order to ride a bike? What does it take to create a women’s right to ride movement in a conflict zone? National Geographic Adventurer and human rights activist, Shannon Galpin, worked in Afghanistan for a decade. She travelled across the country to create projects in support of women’s rights, and for years she hoped but failed to find girls allowed to ride a bike. She worked with groups of girls bravely challenging the gender barriers that exist in Afghanistan, trained and coached the Afghan National Cycling Team, and provided bikes and leadership to clubs springing up around the country as girls realized they have the right to ride. Time and time again, she was forced to ask: Why is the bicycle the last taboo? To answer that question, she and a group of female filmmakers created the documentary, Afghan Cycles, helping to nurture the story about breaking barriers on two wheels and the spirit of freedom in a conflict zone. Afghan Cycles Times VENUE

19:00 -21:00 TBC (at time of printing)

Afghan Cycles is a feature documentary about Afghan women who are pedalling their own revolution, challenging gender and cultural barriers by using the bicycle as a vehicle for freedom, empowerment and social change. Following a new generation of young Afghan women cyclists, Afghan Cycles uses the bicycle to tell a story of women’s rights – human rights – and the struggles faced by Afghan women on a daily basis, from discrimination to abuse, to silencing of their voices in all aspects of contemporary society. These women ride despite cultural barriers, despite infrastructure, embracing the power and freedom that comes with the sport. Intertwined, their stories lead us on a journey into a country of beauty and contradictions, through decades of upheaval and repression, to today; their innocent act of revolution a harbinger of a brighter future for women in traditionally male-dominated societies around the globe. Following the screening, there will be a Question and Answer session with the film’s producer Shannon Galpin Ticketing: Adult £11, With support from Bikes for Refugees Concession £9

The 7th Original Edinburgh Night Ride Times

23:00 - (finishing with breakfast Sat 22 June) VENUE 7 Leith Cycle Co, EH6 5BX

In its first year, the ride was described as a ‘magical experience’ despite the downpours, the following years were dry and we were told it kept getting even better - so we are doing it again.

If you’ve never cycled through the night, on quiet roads, here is your chance to give it a try: the ride (approx. 60 miles/100 km) takes place around the summer solstice, with groups accompanied by experienced ride leaders. We’ll be making our way along a new mystery route through scenic East Lothian at an easy pace (~12mph rolling speed), with a rest stop and refreshments around half-way, before heading back into town to finish with breakfast. Our mechanical support partner Leith Cycle Co will again open from 22:00 for any last-minute needs and accompany the ride. You can also book your bike in for discounted tune-up during the week before the ride (proof of registration required).

“ For me, it was definitely Long enough to be challenging, but with the right Speed to make it a thoroughly joyful experience. Absolutely loved it, many thanks to all leaders and organizers!” “Found the attitude of the ride leaders and their assistants great. Very supportive and friendly. Was greatly impressed by the whole organisation of the ride. THANKS” “ I was a little nervous in advance (thinking it would be full of racing snakes wanting to go flat out), but it was absolutely fantastic - very enjoyable and at a perfect pace.” For more information and booking (over 16 years old only), see edfoc.org.uk.
