Welcome to the second Edinburgh Festival of Cycling, supported by Sustrans, the Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative, City of Edinburgh Council, Spokes, SEStran and others. The Edinburgh Festival of Cycling Ltd is a not-forprofit social enterprise which runs the festival as part of Edinburgh’s annual festival programme. Now, get on your bikes and let it roll... For rides, please contact the relevant organiser with any specific ride-related questions you may have. All rides’ end times are approximate and will of course depend on the speed of the group. 2 - 22 June 1 This is a a ‘do-it-yourself’ tour using resources supplied from Sustrans

Discover Edinburgh by bike using a series of Sustrans Scotland maps that highlight some of the many traffic-free paths across the city. These leisure rides are designed for those new to cycling, nervous of traffic, or accompanying young children – but even experienced cyclists might find an unexplored turnoff from their regular route. This 26 mile tour takes in Calton Hill, Holyrood Park – circling Arthur’s Seat, Craigmillar Castle, Braid Hills, Easter Craiglockhart and Corstorphine Hills, and Ravelston Woods. The effort is rewarded by the commanding views over Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth. 2,900 feet of ascent and descent. We will stop for lunch at Mortonhall. Bike 2 the Botanics START

13, 16, 17, 18, 20 June, 14:00 A three hour round trip following the cyclepath network to The Royal Botanical Gardens Edinburgh. We ride through the New Town and along the Water of Leith with stops for historical commentary. Meet Chris Oliver, the CyclingSurgeon is an inspirational Edinburgh Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. Eight years ago he could not climb a flight of stairs let alone ride a bike. He was over 27 stone and had weight loss surgery. Twelve stones lighter, he cycled 3,500 miles across USA in the summer of 2013 with his daughter. Come and be motivated by Chris’s incredible transformational journey and fight against obesity.

The ride takes a lovely route through the Fife hills, with well organised refreshment stops to assist you on your way. Qualifying rounds open on Thursday 12th June, any time between 11:00 and 14:00, repeated on Tuesday 17th, Wednesday 18th and Thursday, 19th June. Tam Dean Burn follows the Queen’s Baton Relay route while undertaking The Marathon Storytelling Cycle Challenge. He will read the complete works of Julia Donaldson (that’s 184 books – and counting!) during stops as the baton travels throughout Scotland. Starts 11:00. Free. Suitable for children. Edinburgh Schools Mountain Bike Competition 2014 START VENUE

This is the first ever inter-schools mountain bike race to be held in Edinburgh and will take place on the newly built trails at Liberton High School. Open to school children from all City of Edinburgh secondary schools. Competition categories: Under 12, U 14, U 16, and U 18. The competition comprises of 3 disciplines - downhill, skills and cross country (XC) sprint that will make up the overall score. An Evening at the Proms START VENUE

Tuesday 17 June, 18:15 - 20:00 Roseburn Viaduct, NCN1, EH12 6AG Had a rubbish day at work? Wind down with a ride along a route linking Cramond and Portobello. Mooted as the ‘Boardwalk’ route in the original Waterfront proposal, the remaining parts of this should be a priority for improvement over the next few years. For this short ride you’ll be in the capable hands of Liz Farnworth. The route is varied and takes in the traffic-free prom at Silverknowes with great views over the Forth to Fife. The middle section involves some cobbled-together (but safe) road riding as we thread through historic Leith. The last section is mainly traffic-free on the recently improved Leith Links to Seafield path which leads to Portobello prom. To finish we’ll be heading up the Innocent Railway into Marchmont where participants are welcome to park their bikes and have a refreshment at one of the local pubs. A dramatic rehearsed reading of the play “Marco Pantani – The Pirate” by Stuart Hepburn. Marco Pantani was arguably the greatest Italian Cyclist of the modern era. In 1998 he became a national hero when he won the two most prestigious races in the cycling calendar, the Giro D’Italia and the Tour De France. Five years later he was found dead and drugridden in a lonely Rimini hotel room. What drives a man to the pinnacle of professional cycling, yet Marco Pantani in 1997 © Aldo Bolzan leads him to the depths of squalor and despair? “The Pirate” traces Marco’s journey from the poverty of his upbringing in the streets of Cesena, to his ultimate tragic end at the cruelly early age of 34. David Brennan (aka Magnatom) has been cycling for eight years and filming his commute using a helmet camera for six. Ever wondered what it’s like to cycle through the night, on quiet roads? Last year’s sold-out ride was described as a ‘magical experience’ despite the downpours, so we are doing it again. The ride (60miles / 100km) takes place around the summer solstice, with groups accompanied by experienced ride leaders. We’ll be meandering through scenic East Lothian at an easy pace, with a rest stop and refreshments in Dunbar, before heading back to Leith for a full breakfast. Leith Cycle Co. will provide mechanical support again, and are offering a discounted tune-up for your bike the week before the ride (proof of registration required), or you can rent one of their bikes for the night. Saturday 21 June, 10:00 - 13:00 Farmers’ Market, Castle Terrace

Arrive at the Farmers’ Market by bike and you will be greeted with some goodies from Spokes, the Lothian Cycle Campaign. There will also be a Spokes stall with maps for sale and free information and advice for cyclists of all ages. See you there! We will be running our usual stall at the market and will have extra volunteers spotting cyclists at both ends and near racks, handing out goodies and making them aware of the stall. The point is to thank cyclists for doing their shopping by bike and to encourage others to do so. FREE EVENT

Cycle Speedway ‘Come and Try’ Family Day START VENUE

Saturday 21 June, 11:00 - 17:00 Redbraes Park, Redbraes Place, EH7 4LH

Cycle speedway racing takes place on an oval blaze track where four riders compete over four adrenalin packed laps on bikes with no brakes! If you can ride a bike you can Cycle Speedway! Watch elite riders from the Edinburgh Falcons, then have a go yourself. Any riders wishing to take part in the coaching and racing taster sessions are strongly advised to wear long sleeved tops and long, preferably tight fitting bottoms. Trainers are fine but laces must be tied up or tucked way. Helmets are compulsory! Bring your own or borrow one of ours. The sessions will be supervised by a British Cycling coach who holds a current outdoor first aid qualification. Spills are part of the thrills, but rarely result in more than dirty clothes and a wee graze here and there. Edinburgh’s very own Enduro race. The race is on to find the men and women who can master the known and unknown trails of Corstorphine Hill, a long time favourite with the city’s MTBers. Expect the unexpected, a little gnarl and lots of singletrack. It’s no Innerleithen, but there’s plenty of variety on Corstorphine Hill. Practice in the morning and race in the afternoon. Junior (U20), Senior and Vets (40+) categories for men and women.
