Welcome Edinburgh prides itself on being the City of Festivals, so it is only fitting that the Edinburgh Festival of Cycling continues to be a real showcase for all aspects of cycle culture and the City. Now in its 4th year the festival continues to grow with great talks, films, rides and a host of other events. This year we’ve decided to say “YES!” to firsts! We’re joined by adventurer and yes-champion Dave Cornthwaite to hear about his record-breaking global challenges; Scotland’s very own voice of the pro cycling scene, The Velocast, stage their first ever live show and the festival of cycling team bring you our first Velo Market. We’ll hear about voyages of discovery; struggling to compete in male-dominated cycle sport; learn new skills; upcycle old steeds and possibly find love in the saddle at Cycle Speed Dating. Roll on the summer! Kim Harding, Festival Director. @edfoc edfoc

What is RTPI?

An example of the initiative at Waverley Mall, Edinburgh.

RTPI (Real-Time Passenger Information) is a computer-based tracking system providing live bus times to public transport users for individual vehicles operating on bus service routes. Building upon Edinburgh’s successful Bustracker system, SEStran has introduced RTPI throughout South East Scotland, on over 400 vehicles operating on First and Stagecoach services, as part of our strategy of building a passenger-focused, sustainable transportation system for South East Scotland. BustrackerSEStran aims to make bus travel easier for everyone. The system takes account of traffic conditions, delays, unforeseen problems and breakdowns. You can find out exactly when your bus will arrive without spending time waiting at the bus stop. It saves time and puts you in control of your journey. Our Initiative In order to expand the availability of live bus times, SEStran has received funding from Transport Scotland’s Bus Investment Fundfor the implementation of digital signage (TV screens) in public premises throughout South East Scotland to display real-time bus information (trains and trams

can also be included) to encourage people to use public transport. The displays can also show other information and are flexible and adaptable to any organisation. Your organisation can choose the information to be displayed, such as: upcoming events; marketing information; sustainable travel initiatives; weather/news RSS feeds, videos and many other options. SEStran is also very interested in commercial/corporate locations to trial the system on existing television screens, as has been achieved at Waverley Mall.

For further information, please contact enquiries@sestran.gov.uk or call 0131 524 5150

This year Balerno Village Screen brings the documentary of Italian cycling hero Marco Pantani – “Pantani: the Accidental Death of a Cyclist” (cert15) to the festival. This film tells the story of Marco Pantani, who was an early sensation in the mountains before injuries, race expulsions, humiliation, absence from the sport and eventually his lonely death in an out-of-season beach resort. It’s a well-told tale featuring archive footage alongside interviews and narration from his family, journalists and peers.

Direct cycle routes to the venue from the city centre exist along the Water of Leith, and bikes can be stored securely. As well as the event being free, you will be offered a free drink, popcorn and a warm welcome from the Balerno team. Balerno Village Screen is a community cinema - screenings are free to attend but are funded by donation. Please reserve tickets in advance on the Balerno Village Screen website www.balernovillagescreen.com TICKETS

Ride to the Sun Times 1 9:00 - 04:30 VENUE 24 Starts Bitts Park in Carlisle Make Ride to the Sun your next cycling challenge. 100 miles through the night on lovely quiet roads from England across the border to Scotland.

This is the second Ride to the Sun; in the first year it was huge success, far exceeding expectations, and had phenomenal feedback.

Follow in the footsteps of the Roman legions who trudged the long road from Luguvalium (Carlisle) to the old garrison camp of Caer Amon (Cramond). Sol Invictus was the Roman God of the unconquered sun and was the Roman legionnaires’ guide through war and battle, and it is with that spirit that we ride through the night to arrive for sunrise on Cramond beach, tired but unconquered!

It’s not like your average sportive - there are no goodie bags and no support. It’s just like-minded folk getting together to do something different and for a bit of adventure.

Ride to the Sun is an unsupported overnight ride from Carlisle to Cramond beach, via Moffat (with chip shop stop!) and the Tweed Valley. It is free to enter.

30 Image: Jenny Badge Routley

The ride start from Bitts Park in Carlisle, with the aim to get to Cramond beach for sunrise at 04:26. Riders can leave at any time they want, most will leave between 20:00 – 22:00, but the organisers will be there from 19:00 onwards. FREE
