OPEN ALL HOURS: NEW COMMUNITY POST OFFICE

NEW beginnings: Councillor Ali cuts the ribbon at the opening of the new Post Office on Princess Road by Mawliid

Qalib’s stint with BBC Somali service

A ‘vital’ resource for residents

MOSS Side has a new Post Office which is open seven days-a-week and which also offers late night openings.

The new Princess Road Post Office was officially openined by Moss Side Councillor Sameem Ali.

Councillor Ali said: “I am very pleased to be officially opening Princess Road Post Office and I want to congratulate postmaster Mohamed Abdi on his hard work and to formally declare the Princess Road Post Office open.

She added: “Post Offices are vital to the communities around the country and I’m sure the new home of Princess Road Post Office, with the long opening hours, will be warmly welcomed by people who live and work locally.”

The new post office is open every day

from 9am-9pm. The opening hours have been increased by an extra 46 hours-a-week to ensure it is more convenient for people, with no more lunchtime closures and with a new service on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and Sunday.

Post Office services are now provided from a screened counter in the internet cafe. The new branch has been designed to ensure easy access and that adequate space is provided inside for customers using a wheelchair to move around the store.

There is a hearing loop at the counter for deaf and partially-hearing customers and all staff have been trained to meet Post Office professional standards for service and security.

Mr Abdi said: “I am delighted to have

the opportunity to present the new style branch and I am very pleased to be officially launching it for the community. I hope our customers like their new home for Princess Road Post Office and I’d like to thank the Councillor Ali for taking time from her busy schedule to come here today.

“I’d also like to thank the local community for their continued support and use of the branch.”

Richard Hall, Post Office public affairs manager, said: “We understand how important having a post office is to residents around Moss Side and I am confident that this new modern post office will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

“This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the post office.”

WHEN Qalib Barud held the first edition of SASCA News in his hands, he probably didn’t think it would change his life.

But that’s where he first saw the advertisement for the Manchester Metropolitan University journalism scholarship that would take him all the way to Broadcasting House in London and the BBC Somali Service.

Not only did Qalib (pictured) win the Al-Habeeb scholarship enabling him to study full-time for a Masters degree in Multimedia Journalism at MMU, he beat off 500 applicants from around the UK to win a place on a prestigious training scheme at

BBC World Service. The high point of the four-week internship was broadcasting live on the BBC Somali Service to audiences in the Horn of Africa and across the diaspora.

Qalib, 28, who lives in Hulme and has a baby daughter, said: “I wanted to make a positive contribution to the reconstruction of my home country and I thought the best way to achieve this was through fair, impartial and objective journalism.”

We’re here to help

THE Somali community team offers comprehensive local services for people living in Manchester and the surrounding area. This project focusses on women of all ages and especially on elderly woman who may need help in different ways.

We have a variety of programs, including:

Socialising: Life can be lonely. Therefore, it’s important that we as a community communicate among ourselves and feel that we are a community. Even if you just come in for a cup of tea or a bite of cake, we all need to share our problems, sufferings and issues so they can be discussed.

Cultural activities: As Somalis we are very traditional. A culture that we all recognise and understand gives us a sense of belonging, almost like unity. That’s why we have included some cultural activities that may bring people together.

Mental health: Some days are more depressing than others. It’s not embarrassing to admit that. Unfortunately, mental health seems to be a stigma in the Somali community and that is something we need to fix. Part of this project focusses on that issue and we have qualified individuals in the mental health sector who will rise awareness in the Somali community.

Fitness / Nutrition: Many of us wonder how to do things right when it comes to diet and fitness. We are more than happy to help and there is a team that can guide and advise you through this journey. We understand how lonely and hard it can be trying to get fit and that many people can easily lose motivation and their will power to carry on drops off. That’s why we are here to provide all the support needed.

Counselling: For those who are very private by nature, it can make them uneasy speaking about their problems in a group. Here is a way for you to feel comfortable and speak about any discomfort you may have. Sometimes all we need is someone to be there just to listen.

Time for Somali Voices to be heard in media

MEMBERS of SASCA attended a series of workshops last month to launch a new scheme called Somali Voices.

Somali Voices mentors and trains members of the Somali community in media skills to raise the profile of the community and counter any negative publicity.

Somali Voices has already been established in London and is now being rolled out to Manchester and Bristol.

Training sessions were held at Manchester Metropolitan University with professionals in the media industry offering advice and training on how to write press releases, how to pitch stories to editors and journalists, and how to get the most out of media interviews

Mohammed Wadi and Ahmed Mohamud from SASCA both took part in the workshops and found them to be very useful.

Mohammed said: “It was a very useful workshop. We got to learn some very valuable media skills, such as how to conduct a TV interview and how to write a press release. The professionals who ran the courses were very friendly and knowledgeable and made us feel very welcome.

“It’s great that a scheme like this is being launched in Manchester, especially when you think of some of the negative publicity that has surrounded the Somali community in Manchester recently.”

The project is run by The Media Trust and the Open Society Foundation. Details can be found here: www. mediatrust.org/our-projects/community-media/somali-voices

Mental health risks for Somali women

SOMALI Women in Manchester are up to 40% more likely than men to develop mental health conditions, according to a new study by a clinical psychologist at Oxford University Somali Adult Social Care Agency is introducing new sessions on health and well-being, as well as counselling and healthy eating, for Somali women this summer.

Two Somali female doctors have volunteered to run the clinics each Monday morning at 25, Great Western Street, Moss Side.

Only 15% percent of the Somali female population in Manchester are known to have been diagnosed with depression, but according to a survey last year, more than 35% of Somali women in Manchester reported that they have suffered from mental health issues at some time in the their life.

SASCA aims to support Somali women by providing free, confidential, practical and emotional support for clients who are suffering from stress and depression.

The research, based on analysis of epidemiological studies from the UK, US, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, has significant consequences for public health, according to the report author professor Abdi Mohamed.

He said: “Millions of people in the

Vote in election

UK are affected by mental illness, the consequences of gender disparities are widespread. I am particularly concerned at the high levels of mental illness amongst Somali women in Manchester” Mental health campaigners said GPs needed to be aware of such disparities when deciding how to commission resources for treatment and support. Mariam is honoured for her work with asylum seekers

Show respect to your parents

IN SOMALI culture, parents have special rights and are highly respected by their children, which obligates them to fulfil their religious and cultural duties.

Within Somali culture, it is believed that if a person fails to meet such obligations, they will meet divine, negative consequences.

During the olden times when the majority of the Somalis were nomads, there was a father who had a son and loved him very much.

The father cared the son very much and after years, the father grew old and became blind. Therefore, it fell upon the son to take care of his dad.

One day they went on a journey and after walking for a while, the son told the father to wait for him, and the father asked the son where they were.

The son told the father where they were, stating that they were under well-known tree. The father sadly said: “Carry on your journey, I know that you will never come back”.

The surprised son asked why, and then the father said: “This is the spot where I left my dad in a similar situation so I know this is the consequence of my action.”

A SOMALI woman who works with women refugees in Manchester has been named Woman of the Year in a prestigious awards ceremony.

Mariam Yusuf, who helps run a support group called Women Asylum Seeks Together (WAST), was presented with the award for her work with women who have fled violence in their own countries.

The awards are organised by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and Migrants Organise and seeks to raise the profile of women refugees.

Like many other asylum seekers in the UK, Mariam says she is “stuck in limbo” unable to work or claim benefits and reliant on handouts from charities to survive.

Mariam, who is a member of minority Bajuni tribe, arrived in the UK in 2008 with no English and having been separated from her two children. She was caught up in the asylum system for six years, during which she was detained in Yarl’s Wood, and made destitute and homeless.

But despite the extreme hardship and injustice that she has suffered, Mariam learned

English, made friends, stood up for herself and went on to provide essential support to many other women in need of support.

She told Sasca News: “Most of us have been victims of detention and have been traumatised. We are campaigning for the closure of detention centres and are planning a protest with the choir at the reporting centre in Manchester. We don’t sing for entertainment but to raise awareness and campaign.

“Most of the people who come to WAST are destitute and need a place where they can feel at home. They are homeless and don’t have a place to go. They live with friends and can become vulnerable to abusive relationships.”

Mariam, 38, said that winning the award has given her “the courage and energy to go out there and do more”.

Together with her family, she fled Somalia’s civil war in 1991 and ended up in the Jomvu refugee camp in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa, where she became pregnant .

Ashamed that she was having a child outside

of marriage, her family arranged for Miriam to marry an older man from the same tribe. But he was already married and Yusuf says his other wife physically and mentally abused her.

Miriam lost contact with her husband and when her brother was killed. Her father told her to flee to Europe, saying he would follow with her two children.

She has lost contact with her children but thinks they may be in Kenya.

For three years, she was homeless, living with friends in London before coming to Manchester. Here she found a place to live with other female asylum seekers through a Christian charity called the Boaz Trust which helps destitute asylum seeks.

Miriam is a vocal member of WAST and is part of the group’s choir.

WAST provides a twice-weekly drop-in center for female asylum seekers and organises awareness campaigns, including running the choir, producing plays and giving workshops in schools about the dangers of FGM.

Research finds carers lose out

A NEW report by SASCA outlines the problems and challenges faced by Somali carers in Manchester.

The research was conducted by Somali Adult Social Care agency with co-operation from 65 members of the local Somali community.

Speaking at the launch, the chairman of the SASCA, Mohamed Jeilani, said: “This is the first piece of research on Somali carers in Manchester, which has been undertaken by SASCA and was carried out by 12 community researchers from the Somali community who received training from Manchester Metropolitan University’s community audit and education centre.”

He said researchers had attempted to identify the kind of tasks undertaken by Somali carers, whether individuals were in receipt of a carer’s allowance, as well as the relationship between the carer and the person cared for.

Mr Jeilani further emphasised the importance of such research, saying: “If we do not find out the problems that the Somalis are facing, then it will be very difficult for those willing to support them.”

The launch event was attended by dignitaries from the council, guests from non-governmental organisations and members of the Somali community.

The service Somali carers provide are varied and limited to members of the Somali community. The vast majority receive a carers’ allowance to assist in looking after an individual with substantial care needs.

It was evident that most carers had not had any support or training on things such as first aid, safer handling skills and the care system.

MMU thanked for help setting up Sasca News

As a carer is usually a spouse or other relative, the role is often seen as supporting a loved one by cooking, dispensing medicine and other responsibilities generally taken on by families. In the survey, 61% of carers said they did not find it easy to get information and assistance on benefits.

This reflects findings in the wider community where carers from a minority or immigrant community face particular difficulties in accessing and using support services, over and above those experienced by white carers.

Carers involved in the research stressed the importance of having somewhere to meet, as well as activities for those they cared for.

It was acknowledged that being a carer is stressful and impacts on an individual’s social life and physical well-being and any support in tackling this would be beneficial.

THE Somali Adult and Social Care Agency has honoured MMU journalism lecturer Dave Porter for his contribution to SASCA News.

Mr Porter has been instrumental in setting up SASCA News, a quarterly, bilingual newspaper run by SASCA.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Phil Martins Centre in January, Mohamed Jeilani, chairman of SASCA, said: “Without you and your students in the media and journalism department of Manchester Metropolitan University, this newspaper would not have got off the ground.

“The appreciation and the debt that SASCA owes to you is ineffable and SASC will always remember what you have done for us.”

Accepting the certificate, Mr Porter said: “It is an honour and privilege for me to be awarded such a certificate and it has been my pleasure to work with and empower the Somali community.”

He added that working with SASCA had been great fun and that he had learned a lot about Somali culture by working with the SASCA News team.

SASCA chairman Mr Jeilani praised the SASCA partnership with MMU and said: “MMU and SASCA have undertaken joint projects and all these projects have been

successful and our staff and volunteers have improved their skills as the result of our partnership with MMU.”

THANKS: Dave Porter receives the award from Sasca News editor Ahmed Mohamed

Somali pupils succeed in new homework club

A HOMEWORK club for Somali children in Greater Manchester is helping hundreds of pupils succeed in their GCSEs.

The club in Bolton is run in partnership with the town’s university and was set up in response to figures showing that only 40% of children from the Horn of Africa, including Somalians, achieve A-C grades at GCSE.

The success of the club run by Bolton Solidarity Community Association has seen that figure rise to 60% in just a matter of years. The club is for young people aged between six and 16.

BSCA supports families from new and emerging communities such as Somali, Eritreans, Ethiopians and others from the

Horn of Africa. The homework club provides session that focuses on three core areas; English, Maths and Science (KS1 up to GCSE). It runs after school during the week and at weekends.

According to feedback from parents, the homework club has improved the confidence of the young people involved.

Organiser Mohamed Jama Duale said: “We have seen some of the students, who achieved brilliant GCSE grades. The homework club has improved the relations and communication between parents, schools and the homework club itself.”

For more information on the club, ring 01204 334004

RESIDENTS of Moss Side held a dinner event in support of Mahadi Sharif, the Labour candidate for the ward of Moss Side, at the Aljamhuriyah restaurant, which was attended by lots of young people.

Ali Mohamed, one of the organisers of the meeting, reminded the attendees of their civic duties to participate in the politics of the country and to contribute to the development of their communities.

Mr Ali said: “If you, the youth do not become fully engaged in the social and political activities of the country, I don’t know who else will do that for you.

“You have to be active member of our communities and the society as whole so that we can achieve our goal which is prosperous Moss Side and prosperous Britain.”

Mr Mahadi Sharif, who also spoke at the meeting, thanked the organisers and those attending the event, saying: “If I am elected I will serve for the communities of Moss Side as equal and I promise that I will work all year round and will be a voice for all Moss Side residents.”

The event ended with a lively atmosphere and some of the young people whom SASCA spoke to expressed

their delight at attending:

“It is sometimes good to remind ourselves our respon-

sibility as citizens of this country be active members of our society.”

Joy mixed with sadness on return visit to homeland

SALAH Abdisamad, who has worked with SASCA on various projects, recently returned to Somalia to help set up youth and community initiatives.

Salah, who is an associate lecturer at MMU, here recounts his experiences:

At Kismayo, a relatively peaceful town, I had mixed emotions about returning after 27 years, happy in one way and sad in another. Happy that I was able to go back to the city of my birth and visit my old neighbourhood and see some childhood friends after all this years. But also sad to see the devastating consequences the 21-year-old civil war had on the city and the people.

Somalia has just come out of a civil war that went on for more than two decades and as a result needs a huge reconstruction effort including peace and reconciliation, education, health and livelihood programmes, to mention a few - work that only developed countries and organisations with the biggest resources can tackle.

After talking to the local people and the leaders of the regional government in Somalia, some of whom are school friends of mine, I think the following programmes are the most needed:

 Poverty reduction programmes –short and long term

 Health and nutrition programmes –Immediate, medium and long term

 Education – general primary education and children with special educational need

 Livelihood programmes – long term

 Youth empowerment – including de-radicalisation programmes

 Capacity building – for the local institutions and civil society in general

 Empowering women – including campaigns to end female genital mutilation (FGM)

Even then it won’t be easy. While in Kismayo, my colleagues in Manchester and I managed to set up a football team

Still work to be done on ground to keep youths out of trouble

for the young people to start to engage them so that they don’t fall into the wrong hands.

I also managed to set up teaching volunteers, which we placed into the local schools.

While in Kismayo, I had discussions with local government leaders, some of them former schoolmates of mine who are now MPs in the Jubaland Regional Government Assembly, who said to me that they would welcome any effort from international aid and development agencies.

I also talked to Somali diaspora communities and other organisations and individuals who want to help us back on our feet and would provide whatever help they need to be able to do their job locally.

My visit to Somalia led to the Somali Community of Greater Manchester setting up HornEmpower – a Community Interest Company (CIC) in Manchester, Kenya and Somalia to help deliver some of the above programmes in Kismayo to help local communities.

We believe local communities have the power to find their own solutions for their own problems in the long-term.

In the meantime, all we have to do is make this happen for them in an environment where they can think and work freely and encourage them to strive toward that goal. Young people in Kismayo are prone to radicalisation by groups who take advantage of their plight.

Sasca’s friendship club for the elderly

SOMALI Adult Social Care Agency has received an award from the Big Lottery fund to set up for older Somali people friendship club in the community. The club will provide them with fitness sessions and one-to-one counselling, as well as providing support with physical activities to help reduce isolation for Somali elders and iunprove their health and wellbeing.

Xaq-dhoorka iyo

Xuquuqda Waalidka

Xuquuqda iyo xanaanaynta waalidka dhaqanka soomaalida waxa ay ku leeyihiin qiimo aad u sareeya oo cidina dafirikarin, taas oo ubadka ku waajibisay gudashada xilka culus ee guudkooda saaran, isla markaan waxaan shaki ku jirin in cidkasta oo ku guuldaraystaa ay la kulmi doonto cawaaqib-xumadeeda.

Xiligii dadka soomaalida ahi ay u badnaayeen dadka reer baadiyaha ayaa waxa jiray aabo hal wiil lahaa oo had iyo jeer u dadaali jiray daryeelka ilmihiisa. Sidii markii ay muddo u wada noolaayeen waxa dhacday in odaygii uu indho-beelo oo uu waxba arki waayo. Ka dibna wiilkii ayaa bilaabay in uu hago aabihii oo uu hadbada meesha uu rabo geeyo.

Muddo markii ay sidii ahay ayaa maalintii danba iyagoo safara wiilkii inta uu odaygii meel joojiyey ku yidhi; “ Aabo i sug waan soo noqonayaaye”

Odaygii ayaa wiilkii waydiiyey oo yidhi; “ Halkaynu joognaa”

Wiilkii ayaa u tilmaamay odaygii halka ay joogaan una sheegay inay ku sugan yihiin meel uu ku yaalo geed caan ah oo ka duwan dhirta kale ee meesha ku taal.

Odaygii ayaa wiilkii cod murugo leh kula hadlay oo ku yidhi; “ Aabo igu soo noqon maysid iska soco”

Wiilkii ayaa ku celiyey su’aal oo wadiiyey sababta uu sidaa u yidhi?

Odaygii ayaa yidhi; “ Halkani waa halkii aan aabahay oo sidan oo kale u indhala kaga tagay, markaa aabo cuqubadii aan aabahay ka galay oo igu soo noqon maysid ee iska soco.”
