HUNDREDS of people from Manchester’s Somali community attended a vigil to remember the victims of the Mogadishu bombing.
The memorial service at the Ibrahim Maine Centre in Moss Side raised nearly £4,000 which will be sent to families of victims of October’s terror attack in which 300 people died.
Militant Islamist group al-Shabaab claimed responsibly for the attack in which a truck packed with explosives was driven into a crowded market place in the city centre.
To remember the victims and pay their respects, a memorial event was organised by members of the Somali community in Manchester, with nearly 300 people attending the event, including officials from
Manchester City Council.
Taxi driver Ali Abdulkadir said: “It started at 7.30pm and went on until about 11.30pm. We had speakers and community leaders, as well as representatives from the youth in Moss Side.
“We asked for small donations – whatever people could give – and raised £4,000.
“There is a family in Manchester and they had two members of their family
injured in the attack.
“Thankfully, they did not die.
“The mood at the memorial was sad and a lot of people were crying, especially the women.
“We had images from the attack on a screen and people were very touched.
“I personally don’t have family affected by the bomb attack but a lot of people will have relatives who have been caught up
in it.
“It is the biggest such attack in the country and I think it might even happen again because there is no strong government no law and order.
“We are trying to stay together as a community. We can’t give the victims a lot but people contributed something at least. It is something positive.”

Three community groups in Moss Side have been given grants by One Manchester Housing Association.
The grants are handed out as part of the organisation’s Community Soup events, where residents are invited to enjoy some hot food before listening to a ‘pitch’ from a range of communty groups.
Residents then vote for who they think is the most deserving among the groups.
Those who received grants recently include the Aquarius Over 50s club, which gets £4,000 towards organising keep fit classes and social activies.
The Bee Well at Hulme Garden Centre was given £2,000 and will use the money to construct two bee hives and train volunteers to look after the hives, as well as run workshops promoting the importance of bees.
A total of £1,000 was given to Break Through UK for a project which supports disabled people to work and live independently. The group will use the money to hire mentors to develop the reach of the project.
MANCHESTER’S most prominent law centre is refusing to help implement universal credit and is supporting calls to end its roll-out.
Greater Manchester Law Centre (GMLC) in Moss Side says the new benefit is a “punishment” on vulnerable people.
In a statement, GMLC called the new system “convoluted and ineffective” saying that it would not “be complicit in a scheme which results in further adversity” for the most vulnerable.
This comes after a local Job Centre approached the organisation requesting that they provide computers and supervisors to help people access the scheme.
Experts have drawn attention to multiple problems with the universal credit system, including a minimum six-week wait for payments to be processed.
Development worker for GMLC, Astrid Johnson, said: “The government relies more and more on online services, but what people really need is a person to talk to, because they are being assessed as being fit to work, although they
by Cass Hydehave a severe mental or physical problem”.
Ms Johnson fears the roll-out will led to similar problems as Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
She said: “All the examples of I, Daniel Blake are true. We had one case that hadn’t been resolved, but the person involved had already died. Where was the judgement there when the person was so sick that he died during that period of appeal? Those are the kinds of cases we deal with.”
GMLC have joined the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, MPs and public sector bosses to demand a halt to the policy.
Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell described Universal Credit as “chaotic and broken” and said she was “dreading” its expansion.
GMLC provides access to free, independent legal advice and representation for the people of Greater Manchester. Since opening in August last year, they have helped claim back £370,000 in lost benefits.
AFTER more than 20 years of internal conflict and no central government, extreme poverty is a reality in Somalia.
Figures show the infant mortality rate is currently at 132/1,000 of live births, with a maternal mortality rate of 1,600/100,000 of live births, indicators of health are considered to be one of the world’s worst, and more than 350,000 Somalis are refugees, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Sasca News heard how one Somali refugee and Manchester University student Ruqia Osman is helping her homeland.
Ruqia, pictured, said: “I set up my own campaign to raise awareness of a maternity hospital in Hargeisa, Somalia, founded by the former first lady of Somalia, Edna Adan Ismail. It is the only maternity hospital in the entire region and people come from all over East Africa to have access to it. With many women dying every year during childbirth and hundreds of babies dying due to preventable causes, it’s something that is not readily accessible in Somalia. Here, we take it for granted.
“To raise awareness of the hospital, I set up events such as a bake
by Danielle Keneallysale, and a film night where we showed a documentary about what is happening in Somalia. I got so much support and we raised over £1,000, it was crazy. I ended up getting a phone call from Somalia’s previous first lady herself, Edna Adan Ismail, who called to say she noticed what I had done for them and that she really appreciated it. I was so shocked I didn’t know what to say.”
Ruqia was born in Somalia but when her family decided it was not safe due to the war, she moved to the Netherlands. In 2008 after 10 years in the Netherlands, Ruqia moved to the UK for her education, and has been here ever since.
“I have such a big family, and they live all over the world. After everyone moved from Somalia, it wasn’t feasible to all go to the same place. So, my mum lives in Australia, I have family in Canada, Italy, everywhere,” she said. Studying biochemistry at the University of Bath, she is currently on placement at the University of Manchester, and though not knowing what career path she wants to take, she knows she would like to go back to Somalia to help and volunteer there.
Ruqia said: “I still have
connections there, I wouldn’t feel comfortable living here and not doing anything to help people back home. I am really passionate about helping people and giving back, so that is something that I would like to do.”
Speaking about the urgency of drawing the world’s attention to Somalia, Ruqia felt more people needed to speak out in order for something to change: “I felt people had forgot about Somalia as the war has been going on for over 20 years, I feel like people feel it’s old news, so they don’t talk about it anymore, and I wanted to get people to talk about it, and say ‘hey
it’s still not okay what is going on there, people still need your help’.” She has more and more plans to raise money to help even when she knows it does not always go to plan.
“Most recently to fundraise I went to climb Mount Snowdon, but it was a bit of a disaster, there was a storm when we went, so after trekking for about 45 minutes we were directed to turn back because it wasn’t safe anymore, it was really upsetting, but we’re thinking of going back in spring.
“Myself I raised £199, but as a group we raised over £7,000,” she said.
EARLIER this year Sow the City opened three new community garden sites in Moss Side, Hulme and Rusholme.
The project was awarded funding after a successful pitch at One Manchester’s Community Soup event.
Gardens at City Road and Platt and Worsley Court have been revitalised with the help of residents who attend their gardening skills classes. The most recent site in development is on Grierson Street in Moss Side which aims to become a space the local community are proud of.
Alongside Sow the City, local business Siemens supplied 44 staff volunteers to help develop the land.
“People love to get involved with gardening projects, but there’s often a massive wait to get an allotment, so for a lot of people it’s not really an option,” said Kieron
McGlasson, who leads the project.
Established in 2009, Sow the City aims to build a healthier city where everyone can grow their own food. It also aims to create a real sense of community through the gardens.
Volunteers also planted new beds in the garden at Will Griffiths Court.
Local resident Eddie said: “It’s all about the community involvement. Everybody within the community wants to come and join in.
“These community gardens help to get people socialising and interacting with their neighbours.”
Kieron added: “It’s a really nice way for people to come together and it has loads of social benefits.”
Sow the City works on a variety of projects collaborating with local authorities, housing providers, schools, businesses and the voluntary sector. With each new site looking to improve communities and the aesthetic of the city.
Kieron explained, “We hear about Manchester being an inherently grey place, with lots of high-rise buildings and so if we can find some neglected land and turn that into a productive green space, then it brings the area up and helps it to look great.”
Sow the City is a team of three, supported by a wider team of trusted specialists and contractors who bring support for projects when required. It was founded in 2009 by Jon Ross, Kieron McGlasson joined in 2013 and Sarah Urmson joined in 2017, leading on providing horticultural
and training courses.
Kieron said: “It had gone from literally nothing in 2009, just a small grant that started it off that Jon used to buy some compost and wood. He started making raised beds in people’s gardens, then he got a commission to do weekly clubs in schools. He then landed a contract with the city council for the grow Manchester project.”
As the success of Sow the City has grown, more people wanted to get involved. When starting from nothing it was a larger challenge to maintain multiple projects.
“Jon suddenly found himself with loads of work but not enough people to do it. So that’s when I came on board. It was suddenly having a bit of a lift off in 2013,” said Kieron

CHARITY team: Ruqia and fellow fundraisersA NEW book has been published which chronicles the life of Somalian refugees who have settled in London.
Looking To London by Cynthia Cockburn includes the story of Somalian refugees who found their way to the capital.
“What I wanted to do in this book was biography - real-life accounts of Somali, Kurdish, Tamil, Sudanese and Syrian women finding asylum in London,” she said.
Cynthia arrived in London after leaving school and soon came to call the capital home. Now 83, as a young woman the author was fascinated by the city’s history of migration.
She said: “My book begins by tracking the development of immigration control from 1905, the year of the first Aliens Act [an act which put stricter controls on immigration in the United Kingdom.]”
Looking To London also focuses on today’s efforts to deter asylum seekers, including Somalis, who are unfairly “dispersed” to locations far from London once they have managed to “penetrate the border.”
She said: “If colonisation is to blame for the desperate conditions in places like Somalia, Sudan, Nigeria and other countries from which people
by Freddie Bruhin-Priceare in flight, creating the ‘migration crisis’ in the Mediterranean these last few years, what responsibility do European countries have to receive and resettle them?
“On the one hand we have the Refugees Welcome movement, led by Citizens UK. Yet still we hear the clamour of ‘keep them out’ from the right and its media.”

A NEW scheme to force private landlords in Moss Side and Rusholme to get a licence from the Manchester City Council has been introduced.
The aim is to make sure all rented homes are maintained to a good standard and also to reduce anti-social behaviour.
Under the licensing scheme, landlords will have to show they have:
• An up to date gas and electric safety certificate
• Safe condition of electrical appliances
• Fitted smoke detectors in a working condition
• Providing tenants with a written
tenancy agreement
• A reference for prospective tenants
The news scheme also allows the city council to attach specific conditions to improve specific issues. Landlords have three months to apply for a licence and can be fined if they do not have one
A consultation with local residents about the scheme was carried out earlier this year.
Councillor Garry Bridges, lead member for selective licensing, said: “Manchester’s second Selective Licensing designation follows closely from the pilot area in Crumpsall where more than 300 applications have already been received, showing
a good level of compliance with the scheme, and investigations are on-going to ensure landlords apply for application for the remaining homes.
“Interestingly, around 30per cent of gas safety certificates are dated within days of the applications date, which shows that these landlords are taking the conditions of the licensing scheme seriously, and the scheme is already having an impact making tenants feel safer.
“We want to continue this success in south Manchester – and our message to bad landlords remains strong: take your responsibility seriously, or clear off.”
IT IS estimated that at least 200 million girls have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM) in their lifetime.
FGM is the partial or total removal of the female genitalia or even injury caused to the vagina, and the effects of the procedure can be lifelong and even irreversible in some cases.
To combat this issue, Manchester has implemented a zero tolerance to FGM and is the the first region in the UK to take this approach. The Guardian Project is a pilot scheme in its first year and was set up to raise awareness and help those affected by FGM.
More than 650 cases overall were identified in Greater Manchester alone last year.
A spokesperson at the Guardian Project said that in the last year there had been a steady stream of referrals from organisations, social workers, police, and a dedicated clinic in Greater Manchester, the only one to hold examinations for females affected.
The Somali community is particularly affected by the issue of FGM, with a recent UN figure revealing a reported 98% of women subjected to the procedure.
“We deal with a lot of Somali communities with 70% of our cases coming from people of that
region,” said the spokeswoman
The New Step for African Community (Nestac), which is in partner organisation to the Guardian Project, says: “Our mission is to improve the quality living of the African and immigrant community in the North West of England, especially those from the Greater Manchester area.
“By assisting them with various kinds of support to enable them to their environment and thereby becoming economically active and sustainable.”
The Guardian Project oreganises events to inform
families that there are medical resources available and there is a place to talk about FGM. It is more important now to understand what FGM is about as it is not something that many people want to talk about.
The aim of the Guardian Project to make sure it continues to be a positive and helpful organisation for those in need and for it to become a less taboo topic.
Sarah, speaking on behalf of the Project, said: “I would like it to turn into a real point of call where
everyone is aware that there is this project.
“Some of the things we have set up are new within the Guardian Project, such as the data set. With every case we have strict procedures that we follow to capture all of the information not just about families but organisations that have referred [them], to then collate all the information for research in the future.”
YOUNG tennis players are being encouraged to make use of the new floodlit courts in Alexandra Park in Moss Side.
The four floodlit courts and clubhouse were part of a multi-million pound regeneration of the historic park in Moss Side.
Players can book a court online on mobile phones, computers or tablets and both the Lawn Tennis Association and the council are keen to get more people involved in the sport. Courts can be used throughout the winter months, they say.
Councillor Luthfur Rahman, executive member for schools, culture and leisure, who joined in with the game at Alexandra Park, said: “We’re proud of the work that’s been done at Alexandra Park and in other areas of the city to grow tennis and get more people playing for the first time.
“Tennis is a great way to get active
and meet new people and it’s also a game that anyone can play.
“Having the right facilities in the right places will be crucial to achieving this so we’re excited by the the chance to continue working with the LTA who share our vision for tennis in the city. “
Sam Foakes, NW participation manager for the LTA, said: “The facilities here are fantastic and it’s great to see them being enjoyed today by people of all ages but especially younger players.
“We’re looking forward to working with the council and others across the city to look at the opportunities offered by Transforming British Tennis Together in getting even more people in Manchester playing tennis, particularly during those long winter months.”

A SOMALI football team based in Moss Side has made a successful return from a world football tournament.
The Somali Mini-football Association (SOMFA), based at Moss Side Sports and Community Club, took 28 players and coaching staff to the Men’s World Minifootball Federation (WMF) World Cup held in Tunisia in October.
The team, which was representing Somalia with players from the Moss Side community and the country itself were placed in a difficult group including the teams Brazil, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Russia.
Despite coming last in their group, WMF were so impressed with the team’s organisation and determination to attend the games that they were given an award for overcoming all obstacles and making it to the tournament.
Co-founder of the football team and community club, Abdulkadir Mohamed, said: “Travel was paid for by different Somali communities around the country and accommodation was given to us by the World Mini-football Federation.
“Somalia doesn’t have the best government, and they were surprised how professional we were and able to participate. We don’t have a good government, education system and security and we were able to participate.
“All the other teams except Somalia had great help with pocket money and even plane tickets. Our team had some players who came directly from Somalia who we took to the tournament and flew them back home.”
The next Mini-football World Cup will be held in Mexico next year and Abdulkadir and SOMFA are planning to make it once again.
Abdulkadir, who is the father of former Manchester City player Abdisalam Ibrahim, also runs football coaching sessions open to boys and girls of all abilities aged from four upwards which takes place at the Platt Lane Complex on Saturdays and Fridays.
