A message from the president
Addressing barriers in education
Access to education should be nonnegotiable. Yet, every day, so many students face serious challenges preventing them from earning a degree that could change the entire trajectory of their lives. Many of these challenges are financially driven. Students struggle to balance work and attending college. Many students struggle with the price tag a degree represents.
This is the very reason we created and set out to achieve Vision 2025. It’s a vision that is focusing our university to create equitable learning opportunities for all, while delivering a quality education guaranteed to lead to successful careers. Vision 2025 is helping our university address the opportunity gap that prevents so many students from achieving their dreams.
“Vision 2025 is helping our university address the opportunity gap that prevents so many students from achieving their dreams.”
In this issue of DU Review, we plan to highlight a couple of initiatives we have created to address barriers for students, including a major scholarship fundraising event, a new scholarship program for Michigan schools, and a new suite of online class delivery options.
Our Excellence in Business Gala is a great example of the work the university is doing to raise funds to support student scholarships. This event helps raise critical dollars to ease the financial burden for so many of our students. More than 95% of our students receive some form of financial aid for college.
Davenport recently created new scholarships to support school systems statewide. This new Grow Your Own Scholarship program provides school districts with up to a $12,000 scholarship for 75 individuals to become urban STEM educators. It is an incredible program designed to help address the teacher talent gap, create teachers better prepared to serve our urban schools, and will help create a more affordable pathway to becoming a teacher for many.
Earlier this year Davenport launched Online+, a new digital suite of program delivery options to make it more convenient for students to attend class. These new offerings include streaming, on-demand, flex, and blended programs. By expanding our options, we are enabling students to choose the course delivery method that best meets their learning style or scheduling needs.
This issue of DU Review also features our Annual Report, which recognizes each individual and organization that supports Davenport students. It is with great gratitude that we recognize each donor, sponsor, and volunteer for their ongoing support of our university.
Our work to support student education and career development wouldn’t be possible without the continued support of our community, committed donors, alumni, faculty, and staff. It is only through this combined effort that Davenport can continue to deliver creative and consistent initiatives designed to break down barriers and financial challenges for students and ensure they have every opportunity to earn the education they deserve.
Thank you for your continued support,
Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D. President

Helping communities grow future teachers

Michigan’s education system is facing an alarming teacher talent crisis, and nowhere is this felt more profoundly than in urban school districts. Students in these districts are at a significant disadvantage with fewer resources and can ultimately pay the price.
“The teacher talent shortage is a major crisis for Michigan and at its heart is the growth and development of our kids as the talent that will drive our future economy,” said Dr. Richard J. Pappas, Davenport University President. “Davenport University is committed to developing and supporting teachers who will not only be able to address the talent shortage our schools are experiencing but will also be well-prepared to address the unique needs of future students to ensure their success.”
One way the university is living up to its commitment to address the teacher talent gap is by offering two innovative scholarship programs to 10 schools statewide.
The STEM Educator Scholarship will provide up to $12,000 in funding for 75 individuals each year toward earning a
Grand Rapids Public Schools was the first district to sign up to participate in the STEM Educator Scholarship and is optimistic about the future of education in urban districts like theirs.
“Davenport University has been an instrumental partner in helping us enhance the learning of our current staff to address the unique needs of our students for the last decade,” said Dr. Leadriane Roby, Grand Rapids Public Schools Superintendent. “Their approach to weekly mentorship has been revolutionary, and we are thrilled now to extend this scholarship to our students, staff, and community.”
The Urban Education Scholarship Program will provide up to $12,000 in funding per individual, each academic year, toward earning a Bachelor of Science in Urban STEM Education or up to $7,000 per academic year toward earning a Master’s in Urban Education or the Urban Education Graduation Certificate.
The Pontiac School District also signed up to participate in the Urban Education Scholarship Program and is looking forward to working with Davenport University to make a difference in its community.

AGREEMENTS CREATE TEACHING TALENT
Davenport | 6 DU Review University News
Dr. Leadriane Roby, Grand Rapids Public Schools Superintendent, Kelley Williams, Pontiac School District Superintendent, and Dr. Pappas, President, Davenport University, sign agreements for new scholarship programs.
“We are thrilled to work with Davenport to create scholarship opportunities for our students, staff, and community to address the real teacher talent crisis our community is facing,” said Kelley Williams, Pontiac School District Superintendent.
Participating school districts will be eligible for 75 scholarships; up to 25 for current students, up to 25 for school employees, and up to 25 for parents of students currently enrolled in the school district. Individuals are eligible for a scholarship if they have not attended Davenport University as a student in the past 12 months.
“Grand Rapids Public Schools and the Pontiac School District are among the first schools to participate in our College of Urban Education offerings,” said Dr. Pappas. “It is an honor to work with these incredible teams to now create this opportunity for their staff and community.”
School systems interested in these programs are required to sign a memorandum of understanding and work collaboratively with Davenport to encourage students, employees, and parents of the school to pursue a degree in urban education or urban STEM education. The scholarship program is available on a first-come, first-served basis for up to 10 schools statewide.
Davenport University’s College of Urban Education aims to train and support elementary and secondary teachers and administrators in the urban setting and ultimately improve the academic performance of their students.
“The College of Urban Education is designed to prepare future teachers to help children succeed academically by learning strategies that meet students where they are,” said Dr. Susan Gunn, Dean of the College of Urban Education for Davenport University. “We offer bachelor, master, and certificate programs in urban education to develop culturally responsive teachers and educational leaders with classroom experience and mentorship introduced on day one of their programs.”

We are thrilled to work with Davenport to create scholarship opportunities for our students, staff, and community to address the real teacher talent crisis our community is facing.
The year was 2009. The Panthers’ skates hit the ice for the Davenport Hockey homecoming game against rival Grand Valley State University. The first period was scoreless on both sides. It was the second period where the Panthers shone. Within the first 60 seconds, Davenport saw its first goal. Only 90 seconds later, the puck again hit the back of the net. The assist, provided by Jeremey Barber, set the tone for the remainder of the night. Jeremy and the rest of his defensemen only let seven shots on goal in the second period and ultimately defeated the GVSU Lakers in a 3-0 shutout, taking the homecoming victory!
TO COACH FROM PLAYER
Jeremy Barber
Jeremy Barber ’10 always had his sights set on playing Division I hockey growing up. He was drafted into the North American Hockey League early in his life and played AAA and Junior hockey before being recruited to play at Robert Morris University as a Division I player. Injuries prevented him from playing as much as he wanted but left him with eligibility years. He began the search for a school where he could get his Master of Business Administration. The search was over when he found out Davenport offered the MBA program and a specialization in finance, which is where his passion was.
As fate would have it, Barber recognized a name on the Davenport hockey roster– someone he'd known
since they were both toddlers. With the encouragement of that childhood friend, along with hockey coach, Paul Lowden, he started his MBA and Panther hockey career at Davenport. During his time here, his team took home two national championships, the last of which occurred when Barber served as Captain.
The memories that resonate most as he looks back on his time as a player is the “solid locker room,” he says. He further explains that each of his teammates felt the camaraderie, high energy, and love of the game throughout the locker room. He attests that his time at Davenport is why he fell back in love with hockey after injuries dampened his spirits.
“They want to be plugged in. They want to know what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how they can do it better. It’s a positive thing. These kids are more in tune with who they are and what they want for their future.”

An alumni hockey success story
He is taking that same mentality into his Division I coaching position and working to build the same “solid locker room” mentality with the next generation of Panthers. Barber says the most significant shift he’s seen from then to now is their desire for feedback.
Barber shared, “They want to be plugged in. They want to know what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how they can do it better. It’s a positive thing. These kids are more in tune with who they are and what they want for their future.”
He noted that he currently has four players that, in addition to going to school and playing hockey, have also started businesses. While talking
about his current players, Barber quickly noted that, ultimately, his goal is to send these players off into the world with their best foot forward. And as for his assistant coach? Jeremy says, “We need more Boltamas in the world. He is the right person to develop these students into successful adults.”
At the heart of Barber’s passion is the culture that his staff is creating to cultivate happy and successful student-athletes ready to enter their career fields after graduation.
He says Davenport gave him a great head start postgraduation due to his finance specialization, which allowed him to immediately start working for a hedge fund
in Traverse City, Mich. He later transitioned to portfolio management at Fifth Third Bank and is currently at JP Morgan. He says as a portfolio manager, he finds joy in helping families, foundations, and endowments manage their money.
In addition to coaching and working at JP Morgan, Barber is pursuing his Ph.D. and, with his wife, opening a franchise called Stretch Lab, in three West Michigan locations, including Gaslight Village. With all the things Barber does, he does them with passion and a “solid locker room” full of support.

Introducing Online+
A new approach to making education accessible
Saying today’s college students are busy would be an understatement. Many attend classes while working part-time or full-time jobs, are active in extracurricular activities, have family responsibilities to attend to, or have other personal commitments that make attending traditional, in-person-only classes a real challenge.
Davenport University leaders recognize the obstacles that today’s college students face and are committed to continuing to provide them with a world-class education, while allowing them to choose the format that works best for them and their lifestyles.
The university has seen a marked increase in the utilization of its online offerings, with nearly a 200% increase in the number of students taking its Livestream classes. This growing trend prompted the university to reinvest in its online offerings. With its new digital suite of Online+ learning formats, students now have access to the quality education they want – when it is convenient for them.
“Our students are forced to juggle many priorities on a daily basis,” said Dr. Richard J. Pappas, Davenport University President. “Access to learning opportunities shouldn’t be one of them. Online+ is a perfect example of how our university is creating innovative solutions to ensure our students have every advantage in achieving their academic and professional goals.”

It is a source of pride for the university that the new options meet students’ need for flexibility and convenience without sacrificing professional engagement or quality.
“Over half of DUs credits are taught in the Online+ modalities,” said Brian Miller, Dean of Global Campus and Academic Systems at Davenport University. “And every Online+ course is taught by an instructor who was certified to teach online through our internal preparation program.”
While Online+ was launched just a short time ago, it already appears to be a hit among students. “We’ve found that 98% of Davenport students now take at least one class online,” said Dr. Pappas.
Senior Avery Conran, who is studying marketing, is one of those students and says she appreciates the balance that Online+ brings to her life. “The Online+ classes that Davenport offers have been very convenient to me as a
full-time student with a part-time job,” Conran said. “The on-demand format offers a flexible learning experience that allows me to complete the coursework on a schedule that works for me. I’d recommend the Online+ formats to any student who has a busy schedule but still has the goal of pursuing a college degree.”
Online learning is not a new concept for Davenport. The university has been offering online learning for 20 years, more than any other university in the state, making it uniquely equipped to offer these options.
Davenport is currently offering 32 undergraduate and 22 graduate degrees, which includes 10 MBA offerings through Online+. In addition, Davenport is offering through Online+ seven Stackable Certificates, five post-bachelor certificates, 17 graduate certificates, and two post-graduate certificates.

2022 Peter C. Cook
Excellence in Business Award Winner
J.C. Huizenga
The Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business Award is presented to an individual who exemplifies professional success and commitment to community service. This year, we recognized the 23rd recipient of the prestigious annual award.
“It is with great pride that we honor J.C. Huizenga for his contributions to business and his service to the community,” said Dr. Richard J. Pappas. “His contributions have made an incredible impact on our community, our schools, and our future economic growth.”
EIB Award honoree J.C. Huizenga is an entrepreneur, education reformer, and well-respected business leader. Huizenga serves as the chair and founder of Huizenga Group – a privately held firm that provides management services to a diverse portfolio of manufacturing companies, a commercial contracting firm, and a consumer products packaging company.
“This award is particularly meaningful because Peter Cook was a friend,” said Huizenga. “But even more, he was a hero of mine. He was generous to a fault, quick to laugh, steadfast in his resolve. A true servant leader.”
In 1995, Huizenga began National Heritage Academies, now serving over 59,000 students in 80+ public charter schools across nine states. National Heritage was founded out of his conviction that children deserve the opportunity to achieve their dreams. National Heritage was listed in Inc. magazine’s “500 Fastest Growing Private Companies” for four consecutive years.
“To be recognized by Davenport with this award is incredibly humbling,” said Huizenga. “I’m honored to be among this prestigious honor’s many influential honorees.”

On Sunday, Aug. 7, 2022, Davenport lost a friend and tremendous advocate with the passing of Wilbur Lettinga.
“It’s rare that one person can make a long and lasting impact in the lives of thousands of students, but Wilbur Lettinga was certainly one of those unique individuals,” said Dr. Richard J. Pappas, president of Davenport University. “His support of Davenport University and the students who walk through our doors and into incredible careers is a testament to his outstanding leadership and dedication as a community-minded philanthropist.”
Lettinga served on the board of trustees for Davenport University for nearly 50 years. He was a generous donor, mentor, and leader for students and staff alike.
“He was a friend to this university on so many levels, and he will be missed by each member of our community,” added Dr. Pappas. “I will personally miss his guidance.”
Wilbur’s legacy at Davenport University started nearly 70 years ago when he decided to attend Davenport College in Grand Rapids.
DU Review Davenport | 20 Features
As Wilbur Lettinga once said, the key to his future was quite literally the same one he used to ignite his Chevrolet Bellaire one summer morning in 1953. “I grew up on a farm, not knowing where to go after high school,” Lettinga explained. “So, I got in my car and drove to Davenport. It was the beginning of my career.”
The decision was not quite as spontaneous as it sounded, although it did represent a complete change of direction. ‘Bill’ (his lifelong nickname) already had been accepted into Milwaukee’s Berean Bible College to begin studying for the ministry, but by his own account he was “never comfortable with that decision.” Fred Kamminga, his boss at Kamminga Auto Wash in Grand Rapids where Bill worked part-time, suggested he consider Davenport Institute.
Talented in math, Lettinga enrolled as an accounting major, financing his education by working as a bookkeeper at a nearby Texaco gas station. After graduating in 1955, he apprenticed at the accounting firm of Davenport instructor James Rugg and began studying for his CPA exams. Eager to go into business for himself, Lettinga opened his own office.
Wilbur became a force in the West Michigan community as a leader and creator of multiple businesses. He possessed the entrepreneur’s instincts for recognizing opportunities early, including computerized journaling and lasers when they were both emerging technologies. (Laser Alignment, the firm Lettinga founded in 1968, patented a process that helped excavate the route of the Chunnel beneath the English Channel.) From underground sprinkling systems to finance, he pursued virtually every idea that interested him. His original accounting firm, which he later named Lettinga and Associates, and Kentland Corporation, which managed mobile home parks and office buildings, operated successfully for decades.
The son of Dutch immigrant farmers always considered Davenport’s
modest beginnings analogous to his own. Referring to Davenport Institute’s first-floor retail space at 2 East Fulton, Lettinga recalls attending classes on the second floor “above the shoe store.”
But these memories are infused with his loyalty and unwavering support. Prospering with his successful firms, Lettinga has remained a lifelong major benefactor, helping Davenport grow from the single two-story building he attended to an elegant Heritage Hill campus, and eventually to the 43-acre Caledonia campus that features his name.

name. The new campus propelled the university into a full-service academic institution offering new residential opportunities and expanding its programming to include bachelor’s and graduate programs.
Over time Lettinga has impacted so many students through the establishment of the Wilbur and Sharon Lettinga Endowed Scholarships. Most recently, together with his children, Bill Lettinga, Jr. and the late Michael P. Lettinga Trust (via Connie Lettinga), he donated the Prairie Creek Investors building to the university.
Other prominent organizations have benefited from his legacy. Lettinga initiated the Hope Network Foundation in 1987 and named the Coral Lettinga Campus for his granddaughter. He was a founding member of the Butterworth Foundation board and in 1996 donated the funds that made the Lettinga Cancer Center possible. He has also served on many other community boards, including Hospice of Michigan, and holds an honorary Doctor of Law degree from his alma mater.

They’re going to be working around us in every area. So, what better way to make a difference in someone’s life?

Continuing a culture of philanthropy, one class at a time
Every year Davenport Board of Trustees member, Keith Klingenberg, '71 and his wife, Kathy, commit to donating a $5 gift on behalf of every Davenport graduate. The Klingenbergs do this not only as a way to give back to his alma mater but also as a commitment to build and encourage a long-term culture of philanthropy at Davenport among his fellow alums. A huge thank-you goes out to the Klingenbergs once again, as well as to all of our alums who find value in giving back to the students, programs, and initiatives that make up the fabric of Davenport University.

EyQuan Cobb, a member of Davenport University’s football team, was an innocent victim killed in a driveby shooting in Detroit on July 31, 2022. In September, Davenport University presented EyQuan, in the care of his family, with a posthumous award, honoring him with an official associate degree in sports management.
“The loss of EyQuan Cobb to a tragic and senseless act of gun violence is heartbreaking for our football team and the entire DU community,” said Paul Lowden, executive director of athletics for Davenport University. “EyQuan was a player that continually modeled the attributes of leadership, commitment, and hard work.”
A native of Detroit, Michigan, EyQuan was an integral part of the football team for the past three years after graduating from Detroit Central High School. He appeared in 10 games during his career with eight tackles on the defensive line.
EyQuan’s family attended a Davenport football game in September to accept his degree.
