Another record-breaking number of students move onto the W.A. Lettinga Grand Rapids Campus
Families, students and educators all get a sense in fall that something exciting is happening. Of course, weāre learning all the time, but the start of a new academic year brings heightened optimism that what we learn and how we grow during formal educational experiences will propel positive changes in our lives.
The positive boost that comes from learning is what Davenport University is all about. In the last 15 years, our retention rate has increased more than 30%, and our graduation rate has improved by 163%. More than 90% of our graduates are employed in choice careers within six months of picking up their diploma.
Behind these statistics are people, Davenport alumni, who contribute to our businesses and nonproļ¬ts, who take care of us when weāre sick, who rise to leadership positions in their ļ¬elds and in our communities. They provide for their families and are role models for the next generation. The degrees they earned at Davenport have enriched them personally and professionally and have given them conļ¬dence and opportunities they would not have had.
Weāre optimistic about higher education and conļ¬dent about our alumni! Youāll meet many in this issue of DU Review. We have a feature that includes the event coordinator for the Detroit Lions, the manager of Community Engagement at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the owner of a boutique and a managing director at IMA Financial. We have a story about our First-Generation Student Success Initiative that has a peer mentorship program that clearly is working. Nearly 80% of students who participate continue at Davenport. That is in stark contrast to national research by EAB (formerly the Education Advisory Board) showing that 33% of ļ¬rst-generation students drop out within three years. Davenport University is proud of our impressive statistics and our accomplished graduates.
Statistics tell stories; people tell them better. People also make sure Davenport University and its students are supported and thriving. You can read about our Excellence in Business Gala that supports scholarships for our students and featured CNN anchor Anderson Cooper. Thank you to those who are involved with our ELEVATE Campaign, which is securing much-needed resources for students, our mental health initiatives and our online, bilingual
Casa Latina program that has its ļ¬rst enrolled students this fall. Your support allows Davenport to be innovative with unique programs like Casa Latina and be ready to move quickly with new degrees when employers tell us the skills they need to close the talent gap.
This universityās responsiveness to what we see and what we anticipate has resulted in an academic year that is oļ¬ to a great start with another recordbreaking year of students moving onto our W.A. Lettinga Grand Rapids Campus, and students everywhere participating in our Global Campus (Online+).
Your participation in our campus life has set us up for success. Davenport University has an impressive history and an even more promising future. Thank you for being part of our university community. For good reasons, we are optimistic.
Sincerely,
Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D. President
The 25th annual Excellence in Business Gala was held in May to raise scholarship funds for Davenport students. The event recognized Rick Keyes, president and CEO of Meijer, as this yearās Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business Award winner and featured special guest Anderson Cooper, author and CNN anchor.Ā The gala was attended by more than 400 guests and raised $285,000 in support of student scholarships.
The university also celebrated the 2024 Gerald R. Ford Memorial Scholarship recipient Makayla Brown.
All proceeds from the event benefit the Davenport University Scholarship Fund, which provides critical financial support for deserving and talented students. Thanks to the generous support of donors and event sponsors, 90% of Davenportās students receive ļ¬nancial assistance.
The annual Excellence in Business Dinner Gala is possible due to the support of our community.
Thank you to everyone who joined us to support student scholarships at the 2024 Excellence in Business Gala.
MAKAYLA BROWN
BSN Major
Makayla Brown graduated from West Catholic High School in June with an impressive list of accomplishments and accolades. She is a member of the National Honor Society, earned academic awards each year in high school and received the Viva en Espanol award in 2023. She was captain of the West Catholic swim and dive team and competed at the varsity level all four years.
She actively volunteers in her community as a tutor and mentor to other students and served as an international diplomat helping foreign exchange students acclimate to school in the United States.
Makayla is excited to join the Panther pack this fall.

The prestigious Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business Award is presented annually to someone who exempliļ¬es professional success and commitment to community service. This year, we recognized our 25th recipient, Meijer President and CEO Rick Keyes.
āWe are recognizing Rick for his proven leadership at Meijer and within the larger community, reļ¬ecting the entrepreneurship, business acumen and character of the awardās namesake, Peter Cook,ā said Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D., president of Davenport University. āRick is a visionary leader, from his start at Meijer as a pharmacist thirty-ļ¬ve years ago to his current role as president and CEO,ā he said.
Keyes became president of Meijer in 2015 after rising through the company ranks, ļ¬rst as a pharmacist and later as executive vice president of Supply Chain and Manufacturing.Ā His proven leadership at Meijer, his attention to Meijer team members and the impact Meijer has on communities throughout the Midwest are invaluable.
āReceiving this award is an incredible honor for me and my colleagues at Meijer, and when I think about the long list of honorees over the past 24 years, I am humbled to be among them,ā said Keyes. āIt really is an honor to lead an organization like Meijer and a team committed to its purpose of enriching lives in the communities we serve,ā he said.
Keyes went on to say that what makes West Michigan special is its leadersā commitment to inspiring growth and prosperity.
āGreat leaders in our community have a ripple eļ¬ect that lasts far longer than their time here on earth,ā said Keyes. āOne such leader and past Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business Award winner was Fred Meijer, who once said he wanted to leave the world a little better oļ¬ than when he entered it. And I think weāre all doing that here tonight by supporting Davenport,ā he said.
This yearās Excellence in Business Gala featured CNN anchor, veteran journalist and author Anderson Cooper. He sat down with Davenport President Richard J. Pappas for an exclusive conversation about his personal life and diverse and illustrious career.
āIt was wonderful to welcome Anderson Cooper back to our Excellence in Business Gala,ā said Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D., president of Davenport University. āHe has led such an interesting life, and we thank him for sharing his story with us.ā
During the discussion, Cooper talked about his coverage of Nelson Mandelaās ļ¬rst democratic election and described it as one of the greatest days of his life.
āBeing in Soweto, South Africa, on the day when black South Africans could vote, many for the ļ¬rst time in their lives, was unforgettable,ā he said.
The conversation then turned to American politics when Pappas asked Cooper what had changed in civil discourse since his last visit to the Education in Business Gala in 2016.
āA sense of community doesnāt exist in politics today,ā answered Cooper. āBoth sides of the aisle are more focused on getting reelected or scoring political points than making laws and getting things done, and thatās a real threat to democracy,ā he said.
The problem with our culture today is we are encouraged to brand someone who sees something diļ¬erent than we do as un-American or evil instead of someone with diļ¬erent perspectives. And yet, weāre not terrible people.
ā Anderson Cooper
When it comes to the mediaās role in politics, Cooper said he doesnāt believe TV anchors should tell viewers what they should think and who they should vote for. He credits viewers for being incredibly smart, savvy and capable of making up their minds without the help of an overpaid anchor.
Cooper shared a great deal about his personal life, including the fact that he considers himself a catastrophist. He uses the ļ¬ctitious word to describe himself as someone who expects the worst so he wonāt be disappointed. This defense mechanism has allowed Cooper to traverse some pretty tragic waters. His father died when he was just ten years old, and his brother later died by suicide.
āNo one in my family knew how to deal with grief and itās something we never talked about,ā said Cooper. āThe pain and loss is something I never dealt with. I just buried the pain deep within myself and didnāt realize until a few years ago that by not allowing myself to experience the great lows I was also not allowing myself to experience the great joys,ā he said.
He admits to being a shell of the person he was meant to be and not being present in his own life, all of which he blames on not dealing with his fatherās death.
This realization prompted Cooper to produce a series on grief called, āAll there is.ā Cooper said the motivation behind the series is his own grief and the fact that itās something our society doesnāt talk openly about. āWeāre expected to grieve in private so we donāt upset people, but there is great value in talking about it,ā he said.
Cooper reminisced about his mom, Gloria Vanderbilt, and the rise and fall of the once-powerful family. By the time Cooper came along, the fortune was long gone, which he considers a blessing. āIf I had grown up thinking there was a pot of gold waiting for me, I wouldnāt have been as driven to achieve things,ā said Cooper.
He also talked about having children later in life and how it changed his perspective.
āI woke up to the joy of it, and itās extraordinary,ā he said.
Story by Leslie Kinnee
Davenport Universityās cheer and STUNT teams have enjoyed great success over the years, but if you talk to the coaches and players, theyāll tell you that winning titles is great, but itās not what matters most.
Whatās most important, they say, is the supportive culture at Davenport and the desire to do their best, not for themselves but for their teammates.
āWe have something really special here at Davenport,ā said Celia Kiogima, head coach for the cheer and STUNT teams.
āThese athletes have a winnerās mentality and a competitive spirit because of the culture weāve created. To us, itās more than just about trophies and the win.ā
Kiogima has had a front-row seat from which to watch the steady progression of these teams, ļ¬rst as a volunteer coach in 2012 and as an assistant coach in 2013. When she took over as head coach in 2015, the cheer
teams had already made a name for themselves as a force to be reckoned with at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA).
Her team saw continued growth in 2013 when Davenport added STUNT to its athletic program. The ļ¬edgling group was impressive enough to be invited to compete at nationals that ļ¬rst year and ļ¬nished as ļ¬rst runner-up. Just two years later, they were crowned national champions. They are even featured on the USA Cheer website, which is a testament to their standing in the STUNT community.
Under Kiogimaās leadership, the cheer and STUNT teams have ļ¬ourished. Collectively, they have brought home an impressive nine NCA National Championship titles, eight STUNT National Championship titles and four Mid-America STUNT Conference Championship titles.
Yes, these teams are champions many times over, but the programās mantra is that trophies donāt make them winners. They say it is their attitude that makes them winners. Itās their desire to lift each other up and their outlook on teamwork that drives their motivation and hunger to succeed as students and as athletes.
The members of the cheer and STUNT teams understand that they are students ļ¬rst and athletes second. Kiogima
sees to that. She stresses the importance of succeeding in the classroom just as they do in competitions. And itās a message they hear loud and clear. They have a combined spring semester 3.23 GPA, something they continuously strive to improve.
Assistant coach and second-year nursing student Mackenzie Brower also credits Davenportās culture as one of the teamās most powerful guiding forces.
āThis program is unlike any other, and itās truly a gift to be able to experience the culture that we have built,ā said Brower. āThese athletes are the perfect balance of fun and hard work, and they know what it takes to be successful. They also know that the journey is what is important, along with having fun and building relationships along the way.ā
It is natural for coaches to think their team has a great culture, but when players also believe it to be true, it means itās been embedded in every aspect of the program.
At the beginning of every season, Kiogima asks her teams what motivates them. Some usually say they came to DU because of the cheer or STUNT program, but little by little, their āwhyā changes. Their āwhyā becomes less about them as individuals and more about each other.
This season will be Payton McHughās fourth year on the competitive cheerleading and STUNT teams. She is pursuing a BBA in Marketing with a specialty in digital promotion and an ABA in ļ¬nance.
She feels the program is successful because everyone is committed to the same work ethic and because they have fantastic and knowledgeable coaches.
āOur teamās work ethic is unlike anything Iāve seen before, and itās great to know my teammates always have my back,ā said McHugh. āWinning these titles has been amazing, but itās not what we focus on. We are coached under the principle that this is so much more than just cheer and STUNT and more than the win.ā
Success is great, but to us, itās more than just about trophies and the win.
ā
Celia Kiogima, cheer and STUNT head coach
The ultimate success, she says, lies in the bonds they make as a team and lessons learned.
This season will also be Keaghan Ottoās fourth year on the cheer and STUNT teams. She is pursuing a bachelorās degree in HR management.
She appreciates the level of trust on the team and says itās special to be part of such a hardworking and talented group. She is also thankful to the coaching staļ¬ for pushing them to be the best in and out of the practice room.
āWinning titles is, of course, a great feeling and something I will rememberĀ forever,ā said Otto. āThe most important thing, though, is being able to do something I love, surrounded by my best friends.ā
Kiogima has 58 athletes on the cheer team and 48 on the STUNT team and is proud to say they are all committed to their craft and the bigger purpose of it all.
āThey all know they have to work hard as student-athletes and are held to high expectations,ā she said. āThis, in turn, teaches them that there is no limit to their potential in athletics, academics and all other aspects of their lives.ā

Everyone has a story. Davenport alumni explain how Davenport ļ¬ts into their life stories and their successes. Here are a few faces of DU.
Jessica Maw, ā14
Bachelor
The community that developed under the boutique name is something I am insanely proud of and love. Obviously, I love shopping for clothes and playing dress-up as āwork,ā but the community takes the cake. The name of the boutique really speaks for itself. The clothing and community bring so much joy to my life!
My nursing friends, meeting my husband and learning the skills to be a successful nurse are so valuable to me. My relationships built during those four years were forever!
My husband - 100%. (Shout out to the man who agreed to let his wife ļ¬ll rooms with boutique inventory!) Iām the type of person who loves to throw ideas around and never execute them, because I donāt think I am capable. After my decision to stay home with young children, and in the middle of the pandemic, when I mentioned the idea of owning an online boutique out of our house, he gave me the extra push to make the dream a reality! After that initial push, the joy that came from inspiring other women to feel conļ¬dent in their clothing was my #1 motivator and drove my success. We built a positive community of women who love fashion and encourage each other!

Job Title
Manager of Community Engagement, Grand Rapids Art Museum
Work Passion
I love introducing or reintroducing audiences to the wonderful world of art and how expressive it is. Art is a spectrum that can be shown to people who either grew up loving it or who werenāt exposed to it. Itās a vehicle to have community conversations around health and wellness, equality and many other initiatives that may have been overlooked. I came into the art world as an individual with no background creatively, but socially I was able to relate to people who didnāt recognize how great it can be. Itās amazing to see people walk into our galleries and be amazed at whatās on display.
Job Title
Event Coordinator, Detroit Lions
Work Passion
The event cycle and my co-workers. We are able to work on a wide range of events, such as concerts, athletic events and various shows. Seeing these come to life, from planning to execution, is extremely rewarding ā when all in the building are enjoying the event. I am lucky to work with great, experienced people. That has allowed me to learn and develop my own skills. We also share the same values and passion for the work we do.
Job Title
Managing Director, Global Risk & Beneļ¬ts at IMA Financial
Work Passion
Collaborating with people from all over the globe. Itās a dream to be able to communicate and build relationships with individuals who are in diļ¬erent parts of the world. Itās challenging, exciting, interesting and keeps me on my toes!
Tanja Lumpp, ā13
Master of Business Administration
Coming to Davenport in fall 2015 as a part of the ļ¬rst-ever football class was an opportunity of a lifetime to lay the foundation for something bigger than myself! I got on campus at 19 years old, and by the time I left at 23, my life was completely transformed by the many relationships formed within the sports community, the clubs and groups and with many of my professors and support staļ¬. Dr. OāNeal, Coach McEwen, and many others helped form me into the adult I am today.
At Davenport, I was able to learn about the wide range of career ļ¬elds in sports and develop a stronger sense of what I wanted. I worked as a student athletic assistant my freshman year. That led to the building manager role under Nicole Tibbe, which allowed me to gain experience in Event Operations. Working while taking courses, I could apply what I was learning right away. I began to develop a passion for this work at Davenport. The experience was vital in leading me to where I am today.
Davenport has superior professors! I truly enjoyed listening to their backgrounds, learning from their experiences, soaking in their stories and being able to connect it to my professional and educational growth. Everybody has a story, and my time at DU felt very real with professors and mentors who are real people with real professions and personal commitments who are dedicating time to pass on their wealth of knowledge!
In 2016, my daughter Kambry was born. At 20 years old, I was still trying to ļ¬gure out being an athlete, working and navigating fatherhood. It was a rough adjustment, but my football team wrapped themselves around me and my family. She went from a community of two to a community of 150-plus instantly. Most of those men knew her by name, would spend time with her, and make her feel welcome. That laid the groundwork for me wanting to succeed as part of her village. Launching my career in human resources in 2020, I saw that many communities lack the village that surrounded my daughter. I was able to see the bigger picture and understand that art can be a tool. It can be plain or complicated. It can be radical or conservative. It truly is a language that can be spoken with no boundaries.
I have been extremely lucky to have had great mentors, and many key decisions come to mind. At the core of all those decisions, was choosing to attend Davenport University. Having grown up in a relatively small town, the smaller class sizes were perfect for me and allowed me to develop relationships with other students and professors. I was also able to take sport management classes immediately. The relationships and opportunities were vital to my success as a student. DU also introduced me to mentors, from professors to those I worked with in the Athletic Department. That hands-on work experience was vital when I was interviewing early in my career. I can honestly say my career path would likely look signiļ¬cantly diļ¬erent if it were not for Davenport.
My parents are my inspiration. They appreciate how quickly life can change, and this has taught me to embrace the here and now, take risks, do hard things, start and start again, be positive, be authentic and stick with the people who give me energy. My husband and my girls are my motivation, and I am grateful to have a support system that gives me vigor to stay inspired!

According to the National Center for Education Statistics data, ļ¬rst-generation students face signiļ¬cant academic, ļ¬nancial and cultural challenges and tend to graduate at lower rates than their peers. Currently, 52% of DU students are ļ¬rst-gen, meaning neither parent has a bachelorās degree.
āAsking another student is a little less pressure than asking a professor. Itās often easier to shoot a text to someone your age.ā
Dr. Jodi Hicks, Director of Student Transitions and Academic Readiness at Davenport, has made it her mission to change this.
āMy purpose is to support and encourage students to be the best they can be,ā said Hicks. āAny program like this that is successful requires a passionate champion and thatās my role.ā
āWe reach out with intentionality during the ļ¬rst year as itās the most critical,ā said Hicks. āIf we can get a student to succeed and stay the ļ¬rst year, their chances of graduating increase.ā
Since Davenportās First-Generation Initiative launch in 2020, the team has developed a ļ¬rst-gen and parent/family website, celebrate National 1G day annually, and are now featured in the āIām First! Guide to Collegeā book.
In the fall of 2023, academic mentors were embedded in seven math classes to provide additional support to students. Student persistence in those classes was 93%, compared to other sections at 85%. To date, Davenport has trained more than 400 faculty and staļ¬ on ļ¬rst-gen needs and numerous departments have contributed to a student success handbook.
āEveryone has a piece of it,ā said Hicks. āAll our departments have come together for a uniļ¬ed need.ā
Arguably, the most impactful element of the program is peer mentoring. It provides another connection point at the university, helping foster feelings of belonging.
Participation in the mentoring program has grown each year since its inception. Retention has also increased each year. From Fall 2023 to Fall 2024 the retention rate of mentees was 79% compared to those who chose not to participate (50%).
Remon Samara, 45, is a ļ¬rst-generation student who attends classes through Davenportās Lansing campus. Heās always had a passion for helping others and after working in the
restaurant and construction ļ¬elds, he wanted a change. Heās now pursuing his Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
As a ļ¬rst-gen student, he said his toughest challenge was ļ¬tting in at his age. He was able to connect with Hicks through the ACES class, a ļ¬rst-year success course designed to help ļ¬rst-generation students acclimate to university life.
āIām not computer savvy and taking online courses was new to me,ā Samara said. āCareer advisors, coaches, everyone is available, and I utilize them when I can.ā
While not a ļ¬rst-generation student herself, Cassidy Townsend is a ļ¬rst-generation mentor and the new part time mentoring program coordinator. Cassidy is scheduled to graduate in December with a bachelorās degree in business administration.
āAs a mentor, Iām a friendly face around campus, helping others make friends, helping with homework,ā said Townsend. āIf students are struggling, I get them in contact with the right people. I help them feel at home in a new place.ā
āAsking another student is a little less pressure than asking a professor. Itās often easier to shoot a text to someone your age.ā
Through Davenportās Online Global Campus, a motherdaughter ļ¬rst-generation duo in Kinross, Michigan, is pursuing associateās degrees in health information technology. Through research, they each discovered this degree would allow them much-needed ļ¬exibility and a chance to work from home. They now support and encourage each other.
Karen Lieb works as an LPN in the upper peninsula and her daughter Katelin Britton, 26, cares for her disabled brother full-time at home.
āI didnāt have to take the ACES class. I wanted to,ā said Lieb. āIām so thankful I did. The tools Iāve gotten from it are amazing.ā
Britton agreed. āThe course helped me ļ¬gure out how to better manage my time,ā said Britton. āI thought I was more of a visual learner. But through ACES, I found I have so many diļ¬erent ways to learn ā Iām not just in one or two categories. I learned so much about myself in just seven weeks.ā
As persistence and retention rates continue to rise, Hicks is committed to expanding the programās reach.
āThe most signiļ¬cant aspect of our ļ¬rst-gen programming is the powerful impact it makes on the friends and family members of the ļ¬rst-gen graduate,ā Hicks said. āIt inspires others to strive for a degree and reach their goals.ā
Over 400 faculty and staļ¬ participated in 1G training
Over 60% of faculty and staļ¬ are 1G themselves
51% of all DU students are ļ¬rst generation
Designated three sections of the ACES course
92% of students continued their studies the next semester, versus 86% of all other ACES100 sections at 86%

Story by Whitney Rivest
Astronaut, police oļ¬cer or doctor are all the typical answers when sevenyear-olds are asked what they want to be when they grow up. But when Thomas Drew, BBA, Marketing ā15, was asked to present a report to his second-grade class on what he wanted to be, the answer surprised many, āentrepreneur.ā
Drew, who grew up in West Michigan, set goals for himself at a young age - to become an entrepreneur, play college basketball and live in New York City. Drew was well on his entrepreneurial journey when he graduated from Davenport University. While attending Davenport and keeping a rigid basketball schedule as the team captain, Drew started a clothing and events business. He credits menās basketball coach Burt Paddock for encouraging him to continue his strong leadership skills in his career as he prepared to graduate.
āDavenport allowed me to be the leader that I naturally was,ā Drew said.
As he prepared to graduate, Drew had his sights on New York City and an Ivy League masterās degree. With a strong letter of recommendation
from Davenport University President Richard J. Pappas, he was accepted into Columbia University, becoming the ļ¬rst in his family to have an Ivy League diploma.
āOnce accepted, I asked the admissions reps what got me in. The answer was the character reference from President Pappas. I am indebted to Davenport University for that.ā
In his career, Drew draws on inspiration from his executive coach who told him, āIn your childhood, you dream of who you want to be with no shackles.ā That mindset helps him envision a future where anything is possible.
Drew and his business partner Corey Lewis created 1AND1, a holistic wellness platform that provides expert insights, in-depth supplement reviews and personalized habit building, all built into an app for ease of use. At 1AND1, their mission is to make mental health and wellness more accessible, inclusive and eļ¬ective. Their motto, ā1% Better, Togetherā¢,ā was created with the goal that users focus on getting 1% better each day, but they donāt have to do it alone.
āWe have some really exciting partnerships in the works,ā Drew said. āWe are focused on getting the app in more peopleās hands.ā
Drew described his own mental health journey and how our mental wellness, physical wellness, and accessibility to all of this information are vital to each individualās well-being. The 1AND1 app is currently free to use with plans to monetize once certain user milestones are reached. Drew feels deeply that wellness, good habit-forming behavior and mental health need to be accessible to all. To do this, Drew and his business partner focus on aļ¬liate revenue and ad placements for many of their business ventures, especially 1AND1.
āWe keep our web content free and accessible while focusing on monetization strategies that donāt directly impact the consumer,ā Drew explained.
As a way to de-stigmatize mental health through transparent conversations, 1AND1 produced a mental health podcast titled Oļ¬ The Cuļ¬ with Danny LoPriore.
āWe bring in athletes, celebrities, doctors, therapists ā professionals in their ļ¬eld. This allows the listener
to receive free tools, help and frameworks to use in their everyday life.ā
Their holistic approach to wellness focuses on seven interconnected dimensions: physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, environmental and ļ¬nancial. In the app, you can take a short quiz, set your goals, track your progress and receive tailored recommendations. So whether youāre just starting your wellness journey or looking to take your wellbeing to the next level, the 1AND1 app can support you.
So whatās in 1AND1ās future? Drew and team are planning on launching in-app community and accountability features, an AI-companion, and an Enterprise solution focused on helping organizations foster community engagement and holistic well-being while reducing burnout.
Drew tends to revisit one of his favorite quotes by the late, great Steve Jobs: āEverything around you that you call ālifeā was made up by people who were no smarter than you.ā Drewās own advice: āYou have to believe that you can make things real and believe that you can do what you can see. Nobody else will believe in you unless you believe in you ļ¬rst.ā
In fall 2023, Davenport University launched two new degree programs that develop talent in the mental health industry and meet the needs of our communities. The Master of Science in Nursing, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner concentration provides nurses with comprehensive, well-rounded instruction across all disciplines. This will help build skills needed to address psychopathology, substance use disorders and behavioral health. The Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling program takes a unique approach with a curriculum that builds cultural competency so that graduates can be eļ¬ective in the community at the highest professional level. Course materials and assessments reļ¬ect the diverse reality that mental health counselors experience.

Study Abroad Annual Award, General Scholarship Fund, and Terri Tomaszek Endowed Scholarship
āI give to the Study Abroad Annual Award and the General Scholarship Fund because I believe in expanding horizons and supporting student success. These programs provide invaluable opportunities for students to grow academically and personally. Helping to create the Terri Tomaszek Endowed Scholarship was a way to honor a legacy of dedication to education and to ensure that future generations have the resources and support they need to thrive at Davenport. Investing in these scholarships is investing in our collective future.ā

"As someone who has experienced the ļ¬nancial challenges of attending college ļ¬rsthand and the obstacles imposed on students and their families, I understand the profound impact that scholarships can have. By supporting Davenport scholarships, we hope to ease some of the burden for students in need and help them focus more on achieving their academic and professional goals. An education at Davenport is a powerful catalyst for personal growth, career advancement and societal progress, opening doors to new opportunities and perspectives while equipping students with the skills to make an impact in the world. It is a pleasure to contribute to a scholarship providing access to these outcomes."
āSince I began working at the university, being a foundation donor has been incredibly rewarding. I love giving back to support student success and helping to reduce out-of-pocket costs for students. Seeing them achieve their career aspirations ļ¬lls me with immense joy. Itās an honor to be part of a community that values education and empowers the next generation to succeed.ā

Every year Davenport Board of Trustees member, Keith Klingenberg, '71 and his wife, Kathy, commit to donating a $5 gift on behalf of every Davenport graduate. The Klingenbergs do this not only as a way to give back to his alma mater but also as a commitment to build and encourage a long-term culture of philanthropy at Davenport among his fellow alums. A huge thank you goes out to the Klingenbergs once again, as well as to all of our alums who ļ¬nd value in giving back to the students, programs, and initiatives that make up the fabric of Davenport University.
Thank you to Keith & Kathy

Did you know you can leave a lasting legacy to future students at Davenport University through a planned gift in your estate?
Choosing to include DU in your long-term financial planning will positively impact access to education for students in perpetuity.
⢠Consider including Davenport University in your will or living trust
⢠Review beneļ¬ciary designations on your retirement plan
⢠Stock transfers and IRA rollovers are also great non-cash ways to have an impact
For more information or to discuss how you can leave a lasting legacy for Davenport University students visit davenport.edu/legacy-society
