A message from the president We believe that the long-term success of our economy rests on the success of Michigan’s youth and the teachers that are helping them achieve their greatest potential.

Yet Michigan continues to face significant challenges in order to deliver equitable success for all of its youth. Why? According to the Institute for Student Achievement, urban schools often serve students living in poverty, students of color, English language learners, and special education students.

These schools often don’t have the necessary resources to support both the success of their teachers and students.

That is why nearly a decade ago, Davenport launched Michigan’s first College of Urban Education with master’s degrees and certificates designed to equip teachers with the unique skills necessary to support the needs of students within urban schools.

Our Urban Education program has yielded incredible results – not only do well-supported and trained Davenport teachers retain longer – their students’ academic performance accelerates. In fact, students of teachers who have participated in our programs have seen a 35% increase in overall education attainment and engagement.

Now, to launch the careers of more successful teachers and to expand the reach and impact of the College of Urban Education, Davenport is introducing two new undergraduate programs for individuals interested in teaching within elementary or secondary schools.

In this issue, you’ll have a chance to learn more about the progress of the College of Urban Education and its dean, and you’ll hear from one of its alum.

Our ability to launch this program and expand its great works wouldn’t be possible without the continued investment of our community and alumni.

As a result, teacher turnover rates within urban schools far exceed their peers. An issue that is escalating an already alarming talent shortage for Michigan teachers. Further, students within urban schools often have lower performance scores than their suburban counterparts.

I hope you are as inspired as I am in what Davenport has accomplished within the College of Urban Education and what we plan to accomplish in the next few years.

It’s a pivotal time for Michigan. Education — how we approach ever-changing dynamics at all levels for students and administrators — is vital to our state’s success.

Ahja Crosby is leaving her mark both on and off the course. Working hard to be top of her class in cyber defense while also being a strong member of the women’s golf team would seem daunting to most students — but not Crosby. This past summer, she even found time to intern at the United States Pentagon.

Originally from Nevada, Crosby first heard of Davenport when she was searching online for schools with strong cyber defense programs. Being drawn to Davenport’s small class sizes and the opportunity to join the women’s golf team, Crosby quickly decided to come to the Midwest for school. She was also awarded a prestigious CyberCorps Scholarship for Service (SFS) through Davenport’s partnership with the National Science Foundation.

Giving it her all Crosby always knew she wanted to study cybersecurity, which she also knew would mean working hard.

According to Adeva, a global talent network, only 25% of all jobs in the tech industry are held by women. That number gets cut down to less than 10% when considering women of color.

This is all despite the fact that women make up half of the total workforce.

“Being a woman in tech I know I will have to work hard to achieve success,” said Crosby. “I have to put my all into everything I do. It’s not easy, and sometimes it can be exhausting, but the reward is what keeps me going.”

The reward for Crosby is not only evident in academics but has also shown through her involvement on the women’s golf team. It has only been five years since Crosby began playing golf competitively, something she attributes to her father. “He taught me how to play and never missed a tournament in high school,” she said. Davenport allowed her to continue this passion.

In her second season playing golf for Davenport, she is looking forward to things being a bit more normal, after last year’s season was cut short as a result of the pandemic.

Her biggest advice to other students trying to juggle it all, “Find what works best for you and get organized to stay ahead of deadlines,” said Crosby. For her, this means writing everything down on a giant whiteboard.

Gaining real-world experience Crosby heard about a cyber defense internship at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., through her sister who is an active member of the United States Air Force. After applying, she was offered a summer internship with Space Force.

Over the summer, Crosby and a team of fellow cyber defense interns worked on a variety of projects that covered not only innovative technology but also business practices. Her favorite project was UI Path, an automated processing system used to increase efficiencies when working with repetitive tasks. She was assigned with getting acquainted with this system and presenting its usage to military personal.

Crosby has since been offered to continue her internship in summer 2022 and hopes this opportunity will turn into a full-time position after she earns her degree. She has always seen herself working for the government in a role where she can feel like she is contributing to the nation. Crosby credits her classes at Davenport for helping her feel prepared for the projects and tasks she faced as an intern.

Beyond the basics As the new Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dr. Gerald Nyambane is eager to prepare students for career success

As the new Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Gerald Nyambane is eager to do all he can to help Davenport students succeed.

Although he only recently began his term as dean on August 1, Dr. Nyambane is no stranger to the university and its mission.

Dr. Nyambane first joined Davenport as an adjunct instructor in 2004 and continued on to earn the rank of associate professor. In addition, he has served as associate department chair and program director, associate dean, and most recently, the interim dean of the college.

He also received a post-graduate certificate in finance and a graduate certificate in data analytics from Davenport, which he earned after completing his Ph.D. from MSU in agricultural economics.

“Dr. Nyambane has shown a keen interest in serving the institution when and how it has needed him,” said Dr. Gilda Gely, provost and executive vice president of academic affairs. “He redesigned the Data Analytics program and developed two Data Analytics concentrations for the MBA degree program. These became graduate certificates that enable students to get stand-alone credentials in data mining or predictive analytics. We look forward to working with him as he continues to expand the college’s offerings to meet Davenport’s Vision 2025 goals.”

One focus over the upcoming year for Dr. Nyambane will be leveraging partnerships to explore new program opportunities.

“I am excited to lead the college at this pivotal moment when it is projected that STEM jobs will be the future of our economy,” said Dr. Nyambane. “With our first-class faculty, we have countless opportunities to create in-demand programs such as mental health counseling, strategic communication and media literacy, data science, and many more that will guarantee our students strong careers while also providing essential services to our communities.”

The College of Arts and Sciences is committed to providing a foundation of excellence for students, equipping them with the core skills necessary to achieve the highest level of academic and professional performance.

“Now, more than ever, employers seek graduates who are not only professionals in their chosen fields, but are also equipped with the critical skills needed to be productive members of their organizations and communities,” said Dr. Nyambane.

Devin Neu is a first-generation graduate who worked multiple jobs while maintaining a high GPA during his attendance at Davenport University. As he navigated a childhood that was met with many challenges, he continued to strive for success by working toward his business degree on our Lansing campus, graduating with his Bachelor’s of Business Administration. In five short years, Neu has received the National Engaged Leader Award from the National Society of Leadership and Success and is part of the CUNA Lender Development Program and currently works at Community Choice Credit as a lending manager.

He continues to proudly hang his DU tassel from his rearview mirror and wears his Panther gear on game days.

Wesley VanDenburg is the vice president and general manager of Alert Logic and has been recognized both as a leader with Forrester and also as a lead visionary with Gartner. Prior to being at Alert Logic, VanDenburg was part of two cybersecurity companies in which he was an integral part of their development and growth, making them an attractive acquisition by larger venture capitalist organizations.

In his personal life, he has volunteered for four years with two Grand Rapids’ homeless shelters. VanDenburg was also the team captain of the men’s basketball team while he attended Davenport.

Leyanet Gonzalez has used her degree from Davenport to make an impact in the Florida Keys by supporting the homeless population, primarily those impacted by HIV/AIDS and mental illnesses, as a care coordinator. She is currently in her fourth year of medical school and will begin her emergency medicine residency training in the upcoming year. During her time as a medical student, she has had the rare opportunity to provide care for COVID-19 patients in the ICU, which she credits as an extended opportunity to learn more about the industry, public health and humanity.

Anas Alkatib is the advisory manager for Deloitte Consulting where he assesses and builds high-level endpoint security programs. His knowledge on cybersecurity and willingness to share it with his colleagues is a point of pride for him.

Prior to his time with Deloitte, he was the director of IT security, risk, and network administration with CCI Systems. He also had a career at IBM in Cybersecurity. Alkatib currently teaches at Davenport and established a scholarship at the university that supports women in STEM.

Rebecca Dutcher is a respected marketer and digital marketing agency owner in Michigan. Dutcher’s agency, Red66 Marketing LLC, is a digital agency that solves business problems through strategic marketing. She currently serves as the president of the West Michigan Chapter of the American Marketing Association. She is also a board member for GROW (Grand Rapids Opportunities for Women) and serves on its marketing committee. Additionally, Dutcher is a board member and marketing chair for FSA counseling center and is an advisory chair for Terre Haute Young Leaders. She has also volunteered for the YWCA and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The Davenport football team’s Homecoming victory streak continued, with an 18-13 win against Northern Michigan University.

Our Panthers have never lost a game at Homecoming.

To kick off the game, alumni award-winners Rebecca Dutcher and Devin Neu lead the coin toss.

The Homecoming celebrations continued at halftime where we recognized the DU Dance team as 2021 National Dance Association (NDA) Champions and the Panthers Baseball team as 2021 GLIAC Champions. Baseball Coach, Kevin Tidey, was also recognized as Coach of the Year.

A college built to make a difference Davenport University’s College of Urban Education invests in teacher and student success

Michigan’s education system is facing an alarming teacher talent crisis, and nowhere is this felt more profoundly than in urban school districts.

Teachers and administrators within urban schools often lack the resources and adequate training to support their students. This results in an especially high turnover rate for teachers and leaders because those new to the profession may not be prepared to address the challenges encountered in underserved urban communities.

As a result, students in urban schools are at a significant disadvantage. According to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, only 27% of high school students from schools with low income and high diversity complete college within six years, a 24-percentage point gap compared to students from higher-income and lessdiverse schools at 51%.

Dr. Susan Gunn took over as dean in 2015, which is the same year the Master of Urban Education program was launched. In the years since, the College of Urban Education has also developed a master’s degree in urban educational leadership designed primarily for individuals looking to become an assistant principal, principal or dean of students in urban schools and districts.

The college also offers two graduate certificates as well — one in urban education, which allows students to receive an interim teaching certificate to teach in Michigan schools while they fulfill credential requirements, and another in urban education leadership that provides an alternative route to school administrator certification.

And it’s evident that the College of Urban Education’s programs yield results.

“We know that our programs are effective because we have seen the data that proves when teachers have the right training their performance excels,” Gunn said. “By the time they graduate, they have between a 40 and 105%

This is where Davenport University’s College of Urban Education comes in.

The mission of the Davenport University College of Urban Education, established in 2013, is to train and support teachers and administrators in the urban setting and ultimately improve the academic performance of their students.

According to a Michigan Educators Survey, teacher retirements are up 44% since August 2020, while 18,000 educators are eligible for retirement and 12,000 are eligible for early retirement.

This growing retirement trend exacerbates an already difficult talent shortage for urban schools, who already see as many as 70% of new teachers leave their position within five years.

Why is this important? According to the Learning Policy Institute, attrition rates are two to three times higher for teachers who enter the profession without full preparation than for teachers who are comprehensively prepared.

The success of the College of Urban Ed’s programming also extends to graduate’s classrooms as well. Teachers who have attended the college have seen double digit increases in their students’ overall education attainment and engagement.

Gunn also pointed out that from the first cohort of Master of Urban Education graduates in 2016, close to 50% of them have since been promoted to a leadership role in their schools and districts.

“When you talk to them, they credit their fast rise in their careers to what they learned through the College of Urban Education,” she said.

Creating a college of practice One of the college’s unique offerings is its dynamic mentoring program.

The college partners with mentors

and coaches who have extensive teaching experience in urban school districts and pair them with a teacher candidate. The mentors then go into the teacher’s classrooms every week, spending an hour observing and evaluating them.

In a traditional teacher education program, an observer might only come into a teacher candidate’s classroom twice a semester.

She noted that teachers who are earlier in their career need a lot of support, so the College of Urban Education is committed to offering them three years of coaching — a tremendous benefit. And since students take courses through the college at night, they can take what they learn and apply it in the classroom the very next day. This is why Gunn refers to the College of Urban Education as a “college of practice.”

Another unique aspect of the college is its focus on cultural competency.

Throughout all of its courses, the college embeds culturally responsive teaching principles so that whether someone teaches in an urban, suburban or rural setting, they can meet their students where they’re at.

“They know how to adapt their instruction to be culturally relevant

and engaging for all their students,” Gunn said.

The College of Urban Education also encourages community family partnerships. Often in underserved communities, students face challenges that a teacher cannot address directly. What they can do, though, is partner with people or organizations in the community that are able to provide wraparound services to support these students.

“Once you get those needs met, that provides an even better learning environment,” Gunn said. “We train our teachers on how to partner with community stakeholders and that’s really key to having successful teachers who will succeed in engaging students and promoting positive changes in student achievement.”

The college’s next chapter As part of its growth, the College of Urban Education will soon offer two new undergraduate programs.

The program will recruit diverse candidates and train them to be highly qualified STEM elementary or secondary teachers who can teach in urban environments.

She added that the college is ready to address these needs by training individuals who will be committed to the communities in which they teach — teachers who are confident because they’ve been well-prepared.

The college recently received a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program that will directly benefit this effort, as it will provide scholarships for juniors and seniors who are STEM majors and wish to become K-12 educators. For each year they receive the scholarship, the students will commit to two years of teaching in an urban setting.

“This scholarship is very instrumental in attracting great talent,” Gunn said.

The grant will also benefit the college’s Future Urban STEM Educators (FUSE) Club, which addresses STEM inequities in underserved communities by introducing high school students — to the wonders of STEM teaching.

Ultimately, Gunn believes the hallmark of the College of Urban Education is its commitment to students who truly want to impact the lives of K-12 students in an urban setting and the guided coaching and mentorship it helps provide.

Meet Dr. Susan Gunn

At Davenport, Gunn designed and managed the implementation of several certificate and degree programs,

including the bachelor’s degree in biological laboratory sciences, the certificate in urban education, the certificate and master’s degree in urban educational leadership and the new bachelors of science in urban STEM education degree. She has also developed STEM-based community outreach academic summer camps and afterschool programs.

As a product of Detroit Public Schools, Gunn is passionate about urban education and helping develop welltrained STEM educators who can share the importance of science with K-12 students. She’s also invested in ensuring students of color receive a high-quality, career-ready education.

Before becoming dean of the College of Urban Education at Davenport, Dr. Susan Gunn held the dual position of associate dean of the college and chair of the science department in the College of Arts and Sciences. She received a bachelor’s degree in education and a doctorate in microbiology and immunology from the University of Michigan. She also completed a Howard Hughes Medical Institute postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical School. Gunn has experience teaching at the high school, undergraduate, graduate and medical school levels.

One educator seeks to inspire his urban classroom by applying his training from the College of Urban Education

DU Review

As public schools fight to provide foundational education opportunities for urban students, Davenport University equips educators with the resources necessary to help these students achieve academic success.

Derrick Martin, a secondary English Language Arts teacher to juniors and seniors at Grand Rapids Preparatory Academy, enrolled in the teaching certification College of Urban Education program in the fall of 2018. Before taking classes, he worked at the academy as a longterm substitute teacher and as a campus supervisor and a treatment specialist at Wedgwood Christian Services, a mental and behavioral health organization. There he provided supervision, counsel and care to children in the facility.

a.m. to start substitute teaching. Then I would leave the school at 2:35 p.m. to eat, sleep, and grade papers and then go to Wedgwood from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.,” he said.

“As a person who was working two fulltime jobs, Davenport's real-time online courses offered a flexible platform for me to go back to school to earn that certification,” he said.

He was hired at Grand Rapids Preparatory School in September 2019, where beyond teaching, he also spearheads the school’s afterschool programs and serves as senior class advisor.

Once enrolled, Martin was impressed with Davenport’s professors, its K-12 classroom experience and the richness found in the urban education curriculum.

“I wanted to go back to school and pursue a degree in education. That led me to research Davenport's urban education program to get a teaching certificate so I could continue to work here as an English teacher,” recalled Martin.

Martin chose Davenport's College of Urban Education program on the recommendation of colleagues and due to the program’s flexibility with his schedule.

just researchers telling you things they looked up or found. These are people who are in the classroom every day,” Martin said.

“So, for me, it's the faculty that has made this program impactful because I'm getting that advice and education from people who are actually in the classroom doing these things.”

As a teacher in Grand Rapids Public Schools, the largest urban district in West Michigan and the area in which he was raised, Martin knows the needs of the neighborhood, the kids and understands the socioeconomic impact data surrounding the district.

He believes Davenport’s curriculum takes the needs of children in urban school environments into consideration as it prepares teachers for the classroom.

“I think the curriculum is very applicable in terms of cultural diversity and culturally responsive teaching. So just a focus on those types of things is helpful in working in urban education,” he said.

“It's an urban ed program, and it's focused on making sure you keep students engaged. You're going to need to motivate students. You're going to need to understand where they're coming from,” While Martin admired all of those within the program who taught him, he reserved glowing recommendations for two — Dr. Rajah Smart and adjunct professor Sheree Joseph-Bos.

“To be honest, I want to give everybody a shout-out, but those were two professors that were passionate about education. They're passionate about urban children being successful, and that type of passion is contagious,” said Martin.

It’s that level of love for and commitment to the youth of Grand Rapids that Martin emulates while inspiring the students in his classes.

He remembers his time in the public school system and how much it prepared him for life, and he wants to give today’s kids the same opportunity.

Martin hopes his commitment in the classroom will inspire his students to be future educators that can help to carry out the mission of the College of Urban Education.

“I hope they leave [my class] with more than English Language Arts skills. I want kids to leave with excitement for their future,” he said.

Building a culture of philanthropy, one class at a time For three years in a row, Alumni Board of Directors’ chair, Keith Klingenberg ’71 and wife, Kathy, have committed to donating a $5 gift on behalf of every Davenport graduate.
