A message from the president I know many of us are facing unique challenges as a result of the pandemic and its impact on our families, communities and local economies.

I trust this letter finds you well and that you and yours are healthy and safe.

This fall has certainly been one of the most challenging in Davenport’s history.

Students and faculty alike have been asked to accommodate a new approach to their classes, additional safety protocols and many other changes we’ve made to protect the university community during the pandemic. Yet, despite these challenges, Davenport’s staff, faculty and students have responded with incredible focus and commitment to protect each other’s safety.

How students can graduate from high school with a college degree

For high school juniors and seniors, taking dual enrollment courses through area colleges and universities is becoming more popular. Dual enrollment courses, which are typically offered in-seat and online, allow high school students to secure college credits at reduced prices or even for free.

Not only do dual enrollment courses help students save on tuition, they’re also an excellent choice for students who want to take higher-level, specialized or technical courses that aren’t offered at their high school.

Being proactive can result in huge savings and a faster path to earning a degree Nate Van Huis is one of these students. Nate was homeschooled for the majority of his elementary and secondary education. During his sophomore and junior years in high school, he enrolled in the Entrepreneurship & Global Business program at Careerline Tech Center, a technical school in Holland, Michigan.

It was during this time that Nate realized the potential opportunity

to transfer his business course experience to Davenport University for college credit. His mom set up an exploratory meeting and encouraged him to talk with Davenport’s dual enrollment advisor, Stacy Faulkner, to explore credit transfers. During this meeting, Stacy brought up dual enrollment options that Nate could take advantage of for the remainder of his high school years.

That meeting resulted in an action plan. As a first step, Nate enrolled at Hamilton High School, which allowed him to take two dual-enrollment college courses each semester during his junior year and four courses each semester during his senior year, in addition to the classes he was taking at Careerline — all for future college credit.

Two years later, when Nate graduated from high school, he also graduated from Davenport University with an associate degree in business administration.

“It was my mom who signed me up for my first business class,” said Nate.

“I wasn’t going to do college. I saw a degree as a piece of paper with no benefits — just a ton of money and time wasted. But after taking classes and getting into the business realm, certain assignments got me more interested in the work. I found it was a passion and something I was good at.”

“During my senior year of high school, my Davenport accounting professor, Tamara VandenBerg, showed me where I could go based on the skills and traits she saw in me. She convinced me to switch my major from business management to managerial accounting and pursue more education — my bachelor’s degree,” he said.

A strong relationship with his academic advisor, Michelle Sall, also helped Nate earn his degree quickly.

“Michelle knew I didn’t want to spend money or waste time on stuff that doesn’t matter,” said Nate. “She was always willing to organize my class schedule in a way that worked around what I wanted and allowed me to continue working full-time during the day. She knew what drove me and what I wanted to accomplish.”

At 20, Nate is preparing for a successful career while many of his peers are working to complete their general education and prerequisite courses.

“To be honest, I’m a very frugal person,” said Nate. “I don’t like to waste time or money. Initially, through Careerline, I was able to find my passion. And the team at Davenport helped me recognize the path needed to make that passion a career.”

While dual enrollment may not be for everyone, it’s worth talking with a high school advisor about your options. For homeschool students, a direct conversation with a college dual enrollment advisor works, too. It’s important to understand your options as you chart a course for both your high school and college years — as Nate discovered, being proactive can result in huge savings and a faster path to a successful career.

Davenport University has opened its dual enrollment program to junior and senior high school students statewide.

Courses are offered at an 80% savings, making the cost for each three-credit, seven-week online course less than $500.

If a student’s home school approves them taking a dual enrollment course, the state will reimburse the student for each credit hour.

In spring of 2021, Nate will graduate from Davenport University with his bachelor’s degree in accounting and a managerial accounting specialty. He has already passed both of his Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exams and is now working to meet his 4,000 hour work experience requirement.

“Healing is an art, medicine is a profession, and health care is a business.” Katie Winiarczyk, M.D., has never forgotten the words that a good friend once shared with her.

In fact, that perspective is one of the reasons she decided to pursue a master of business administration (MBA) in health care management from Davenport University atop her doctor of medicine degree from Saba University School of Medicine.

Now an internal medicine physician at Marshfield Medical Center in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, a palliative care provider at a local clinic and the medical director of two nursing homes and a “swing bed” hospital program, she’s more convinced than ever that having business smarts as well as medical credentials has prepared her for success in today’s everchanging health care landscape.

By focusing on strategic, financial and ethical decisionmaking skills, Davenport’s program is designed to advance students’ practical expertise in managing the diverse health care processes necessary for individual and organizational success. These skills are integrated through interdisciplinary approaches of health care organizations, ethical and legal issues, financial management, managing projects, information management and strategic management — all using case analysis and interactive technologies.

That perspective is shared by Mark Hamed, M.D., a boardcertified family doctor in southeast Michigan who is medical director at eight rural health departments, medical director of the ER and hospital medicine department at McKenzie Health System in Sandusky, Michigan, and a senior staff physician with Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Hamed was also elected president of the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians in August.

“I use the knowledge learned from my Davenport MBA in health care management daily. It helps me clearly identify areas where cost-saving opportunities tie in with enhanced quality of care. This allows me to help direct patients to care that provides the most efficient, safe and high-value care while reducing excessive and unnecessary expenditures,” he says.

Expanded career opportunities In an era when doctors increasingly need to be as familiar with the language of business as they are with medical terms and practices, an MBA is more valuable than ever, whether a physician intends to practice medicine throughout their career or aspires to a leadership position somewhere down the road.

“I feel that my MBA helps me to better understand the drastic changes we’re seeing,” says Dr. Winiarczyk. “I think younger physicians really have to have a broad understanding of the business of health care because, in the long run, it’s only going to benefit them.”

Dr. Hamed agrees. “I think it’s vital that every physician have a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the business aspect of health care management. With the focus on health care cost savings, quality of care and value-driven safe care being stressed now more than ever before, it would be difficult to practice medicine and stay ahead without such knowledge,” he says.

“For me, it’s actually been a joy learning these business skills and continuing to use them,” concludes Dr. Winiarczyk. “It’s made me more versatile and a more independent individual.”

“When I’m trying to generate new ideas for my business, I like to listen

I work directly with farmers in Papua New Guinea, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras. By doing this, I know all of the funds are going directly to their farms where they can invest them in sustainable efforts and best practices. I purchase coffee from farmers who are protecting adjoining rain forests by purchasing acreage as well as those who are providing free housing, health care and schooling to families who work on the farm during the harvesting season.”

He’s also inspired by other local businesses that he frequents. A friend opened a fly fishing store in a Chicago suburb and Wingo is most impressed by the community that has been built around it.

“This scholarship means a great deal to me. Not only does the financial assistance provide the opportunity to expand my education, it also sets me up for a career path rooted in service to our country,” reported one scholar.

“After I graduate, I’m hoping to get involved in incident response, which incorporates aspects of forensic examination and cyber defense.”

“I decided to get into cyber defense because there has been major growth in the industry, and I wanted in. I worked in retail management for 10 years and saw cyberattacks for credit fraud firsthand, which sparked my interest,” reported one scholar. “There’s so much opportunity out there, it's amazing. Wherever I end up after graduation, I’m just happy to know that I’ll be protecting America and stopping the bad guys.”

Nursing students face pandemic to earn new skills

Students support health department with contract tracing

For university students, acceptance into an externship program is paramount to dipping a toe into your first career experience. The COVID-19 pandemic caused Davenport University senior Courtney McInerney, a student in the registered nurse in primary care (RNPC) program, to jump into her first experience with both feet. McInerney spent her externship as a COVID-19 contact tracing monitor with the Kent County Health Department.

Communities use contact tracing to help slow the spread of coronavirus.

When a person tests positive for COVID-19, clinics and hospitals send the names of those people to their local health department for further investigation.

“Every case that’s positive in Kent County is reported by physicians and laboratories. If someone tests positive, we receive that result as a positive case in our database,” said Brian Hartl, epidemiology supervisor at Kent County Health Department.

In turn, the health department asks the infected person about people they’ve been in close contact with recently. The health department alerts those people within

24 hours, warning them of potential virus exposure. The process is anonymous to protect all parties.

“We have a team of investigators that are responsible for contacting these folks, gathering information from them, and contacting their close contacts to quarantine those folks,” said Hartl.

He calls COVID a public health anomaly like nothing he’s experienced.

“I’ve been here 18 years, and we haven’t had to do anything like this — never to this extent where we’re doing isolation and quarantine,” he said.

Prior to performing her externship at Kent County Health Department, McInerney was among four students in the RNPC program preparing for an externship at the Wyoming Veteran's Affairs (VA) Outpatient Clinic. Stay-athome orders altered those plans.

“Students in the RNPC program have an opportunity to do a 12-week externship at the Wyoming VA where they offer not only primary care but a huge array of ambulatory and specialty care services to veterans,” said Heather Hunt, RNPC grant coordinator.

“When COVID happened, we were sheltered-in-place and our spring semester was abruptly interrupted as classes went from in-person to online.

It affected summer externships — they were put on hold.”

That’s when the Kent County Health Department contacted Davenport University seeking students to assist with contact tracing and monitoring.

“The crisis led to a need for contact tracing calls in Kent County and I said, ‘I have the people!’” said Hunt.

Not only do these opportunities allow students to gain real-life experience and technical skills, but they also build important soft skills

“I learned how to communicate with contacts on the phone and to provide guidance and education on how to decrease the spread of COVID-19 throughout the Kent County community,” McInerney said.

“Through these calls, I learned to communicate with patients by using terms that could be understood and invited questions to be asked. While these skills were specific to contact tracing, they will be valuable in my future practice. In learning the process of contact tracing, I also learned how it can decrease the exposure and spread of the virus in the community.”

McInerney also discovered that ambulatory care can be different with each patient. One case she recalls was of a Spanish-speaking person.

During her time at Kent County Health Department, McInerney was tasked with contacting the close contacts of infected people over the phone to encourage them to quarantine themselves and monitor their symptoms. She also provided direction for additional assistance.

“I had to utilize an interpreter to relay important information regarding their health status. Luckily, the information was relayed, and the client was able to quarantine appropriately. It opened my eyes to the many barriers that can impede people from receiving the information and care they need,” she said.

McInerney said the lessons learned in personal communication will stick with her wherever she works next.

“Sensitivity is a skill that I learned and will take with me in my future career. Having empathy for the client’s feelings and providing comfort during challenging times are important skills to have as a health care provider.

Through speaking to individuals and answering questions, I was able to practice and improve these skills,” she said.

“This is a part of a nurse’s role. We need to do our part in public health

within the community to make a positive impact,” Hunt said. “For the students to be involved in their community and to help decrease the spread of COVID — not only are they learning about it, but they are also doing it. And that is important.”

According to Hunt, the COVID-19 climate provided nursing students experience in frontline ambulatory care, also known as outpatient care.

These externships are tremendously important for nursing students, who typically move directly into hands-on roles after graduation. Not only do these opportunities allow students to gain real-life experience and technical skills, but they also build important soft skills such as empathy, tenacity, communication and critical thinking.

Matthew Weaver’s (BS ’13) dream has always been to have a career in technology. Now, he works as a software programmer at a nonprofit in Lansing, Michigan, and holds an undergraduate degree in computer gaming and simulation and a graduate degree in software engineering.

“I was born premature, and my lungs weren't fully developed,” said Weaver.

“So, my brain didn't get enough oxygen.

That's basically what causes cerebral palsy. But every case of cerebral palsy is different. I'm in a wheelchair and

It affects balance and posture, making either difficult, if not impossible.

“I've had to go through the struggles of figuring how to do things,” he said. “I do things somewhat differently than a ‘normal’ person would, but I end up using technology to overcome a lot of that.”

With his love of technology and his analytical personality, it’s easy to see how Weaver fell in love with software engineering — a passion that led him to Davenport University.

When my parents and I moved to Grand Rapids, I was starting college and we lived five minutes from the university. So, I ended up going there — mainly because of their technology department and computer gaming degree,” said Weaver.

Davenport University presented an opportunity for him to experience the freedom to live and learn without being too far from home.

“I was looking for something close to home but far enough away where I could be independent and live the college experience,” he said.

Weaver majored in computer gaming and simulation in Davenport's College of Technology. He chose to pursue a career in the technology field, so he could have the ability to do meaningful work and do it independently.

“I went into programming because I wanted to have something that I knew would be long-term, but also something I could do by myself because I already have to have assistance with a lot of stuff throughout my life,” he said.

He credits the university for providing a campus where he could flourish. His favorite part about Davenport is its focused curriculum.

“With that focus, your degree could get really specific, and there were plenty of professors who knew what they were talking about. I remember several life

experiences professors shared that helped me when I got out into the working world. I liked that,” said Weaver.

He credits that real-world experience passed on to him by his professors as vital to his transition into the working world after leaving Davenport.

“My first job, six months after I graduated college, was working for an IBM office in East Lansing. We did a lot of contract work for other companies, and I applied my skills right away. I ended up recalling a lot of the examples, discussions and information that my professors taught me. So, it was very shocking how quickly and how easily those lessons were applied from the classroom to the real world,” Weaver said.

Today, Weaver works as a software programmer for Peckham, a nonprofit organization where he builds apps.

He’s since added a master’s degree in software engineering from Penn State University to his repertoire. He’s still as fascinated with technology as ever and finds joy and satisfaction knowing that what he builds benefits others for good.

“I believe that technology is supposed to help people. That's the entire point, anything that helps people accomplish a task or assists them in accomplishing a task. I love seeing a project go from the ground up and saying, ‘I helped out here or I did that.’

Technology can break down so many barriers if used properly,” he said.

As for other students with physical challenges, Weaver offers this encouragement.

“I'm one of the rare people in my situation that has a full-time job and went to school to get his master's. I know there are a lot of people similar to me that can do it, too. It will be difficult, but they can do it,” said Weaver.

“There are ways to get around everything that life throws at you if you have enough stamina and enough courage to ignore what other people tell you and follow your heart. If you have enough confidence in yourself, you can accomplish anything; anything can happen.”

at Davenport. The campus life team has recognized this jump and sought to create additional accommodations to make academic and campus life more successful for every student.

“Those students receive accommodations either in the classroom, housing or both.

Accommodations include a wide range of resources, depending on what the student needs to thrive — it could be additional time on tests, an emotional support animal in housing or an interpreter,” said Bishop.

“Cassie Clark, our campus life coordinator, started a mentoring program specifically for students with disabilities. It helps them connect with each other and talk about what it's like to be an individual with a disability on our campus and about how to navigate the social landscape of living on campus or participating in the classroom. It's been a wonderful resource for our small group of students,” said Bishop.

Building a culture of philanthropy, one class at a time

Last year, Alumni Board of Directors’ president, Keith Klingenberg ‘71, and his wife, Kathy, decided to pay it forward with a $5 gift on behalf of every 2019 Davenport graduate. It was their intention to not only give back to the university, but also to introduce a culture of philanthropy amongst the newest members of the Alumni Association.

We’re happy to report that the Klingenbergs’ gift has made an impression and helped create a natural culture of philanthropy at DU. The 2019 Davenport University graduates gave seven times more in the year following their graduation than those in the year prior who had not had a gift given on their behalf.

The Klingenbergs are at it again.

This year, they are continuing their philanthropic endeavors with a $5 gift on behalf of all 2020 graduates listed here.

They are also creating a matching gift for the class of 2019 for gifts up to $500 to the President’s Visionary Fund. The focus of this fund is to allocate resources to students, programs and initiatives on behalf of the university.
