From the Maestro Dear Friends, Welcome and thank you for joining your Arkansas Symphony Orchestra as we embark on our 47th season! As I envisage this year and those beyond, I am always struck by how each season possesses unique personality and character. Indeed, a season’s individuality often develops and blossoms throughout a year, and a first glance toward 2012-13 reveals penchants for drama, celebrity, virtuosity, and beauty. A closer look uncovers an affinity for friends, fervor, and favorites. Our collective excitement over what is to come is palpable, but how will we top two seasons together of artistic milestones, growing audiences, and ever increasing engagement with our community and great state? We will endeavor to meet this challenge by combining star power, captivating performers, favorite friends and treasured music, all while bringing the great talents of ASO musicians closer to you around the city and state in fresh and even surprising ways. We are thrilled to present iconic violinist Midori and Grammy and Pulitzer Prize winning composer Jennifer Higdon replete with favorite orchestral works like Scheherazade and Don Juan, joined with masterpieces of Beethoven, Sibelius and Brahms. Fiery virtuoso pianist Elisso Bolkvadze will bring her passion to the stage with Saint-Saëns romantic, frolicking 2nd Piano Concerto. New perspectives hit town with celebrated film composer Tan Dun and dynamic guest conductor Guillermo Figueroa. In February, we’ll hear full ASO forces with Shostakovich’s monumental and awe-inspiring 10th Symphony in the kind of performance that reminds us all of the power of music. Our Acxiom Pops Live! series opens and closes with can’t miss headliners, the smash-hit Classical Mystery Tour: The Beatles, and the magical and visually spectacular Cirque du la Symphonie; while A Night at the Movies and American Songbook offer our favorite hits from the stage and silver screen, Gershwin, and Cole Porter. Of course, we also continue our beloved Happy Holidays program that has become an Arkansas family tradition. Thank you to all who have assisted in our artistic growth and efforts, as well as to those who have offered support and encouragement. The musicians of this splendid orchestra are artists, and all artists savor those moments where their efforts are shown to have made an impact. It is through your continued support and the tireless work of musicians, board, volunteers, and staff that we continue building from a position of success. I thank you sincerely for making the extraordinary aspects of this season possible.

Musically yours,

Philip Mann, Music Director

Artists Philip Mann Music Director Hailed by the BBC as a “talent to watch out for, who conveys a mature command of his forces,” American conductor Philip Mann is quickly gaining a worldwide reputation as an “expressively graceful yet passionate” artist with a range spanning opera, symphonic repertoire, new music, and experimental collaborations. Philip is in his third season as Music Director of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, which has seen audience and artistic growth, new energy, and financial health under his tenure. Formerly as the San Diego Symphony’s Associate Conductor, he conducted hundreds of performances of Jacobs Subscription Masterworks, Symphony Exposed, family, young people’s concerts, Kinder Konzert, pops, and other special programs and projects. As an American Conducting Fellow, the San Diego Union Tribune raved, “Mann was masterful… a skilled musical architect, designing and executing a beautifully paced interpretation, which seemed to spring from somewhere deep within the music rather than superimposed upon it.” As winner of the Vienna Philharmonic’s Karajan Fellowship at the Salzburg Festival, Mann has relationships with orchestras and operas worldwide: including the Cleveland Orchestra, l’Orchestre symphonique de Québec, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Georgian State Opera, and the National Symphony of Cyprus. His recent Beethoven 9 was described as “Titanic” and his Canadian debut with the OSQ was dubbed by Le Soleil as a “Tour de Force” and led to an immediate reengagement in 2013. Other upcoming engagements include the Grand Rapids Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic, Little Orchestra Society of NY, and the Georgian State Opera. Previously, the music director of the Oxford City Opera and Oxford Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra, he has also held conducting positions with the Music in the Mountains Festival and Indianapolis Symphony. Mann has worked with leading artists such as Joshua Bell, Sharon Isbin, Dmitri Alexeev, Midori, and Marvin Hamlisch and has given premiers of major composers including John Corigliano, Jennifer Higdon, Michael Torke, continued

Lucas Richman, and many others. He maintains a lively schedule as a guest conductor having conducted at New York’s Avery Fischer Hall and London’s Barbican Center. Elected a Rhodes Scholar, Mann studied and taught at Oxford, and has served as assistant conductor to Franz Welser-Möst, Simon Rattle, Leonard Slatkin, Jaime Laredo, Mario Venzago, Bramwell Tovey, Pinchas Zukerman, and many others. At Oxford, he won the annual competition to become principal conductor of the Oxford University Philharmonia. Under his leadership, the Philharmonia’s performances and tours received international press and acclaim. Mann studied with Alan Hazeldine of London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Colin Metters at the Royal Academy of Music, and Marios Papadopolous of the Oxford Philomusica. He worked with Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center’s National Conducting Institute and Michael Tilson Thomas at the New World Symphony. Mentorship with Esa-Pekka Salonen and Jorma Panula followed at the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Conducting Masterclasses, and Robert Spano with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s international Mozart Requiem masterclass for the League of American Orchestras annual conference. He has also worked under Imre Pallo, David Effron, John Poole, and Thomas Baldner at Indiana University, where he was appointed visiting lecturer in orchestral conducting, and worked as assistant conductor at the IU Opera Theater. Additional studies came under the Bolshoi Theater’s music director, Alexander Vedernikov at the Moscow State Conservatory, Gustav Meir, Kenneth Keisler, and with Pulitzer Prize winning composer Robert Ward. He is the recipient of numerous awards including commendations from several cities, and the state of California.

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Vesper Choir The internationally recognized University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Vesper Choir, under the direction of Dr. Michael J. Bates, Professor of Music, is nationally recognized among historically Black colleges and universities for its diverse repertoire and excellent performances. This 65-70 member select ensemble, founded in the 1940s by Professor Ariel Lovelace and conducted for more than 40 years by Professor Shelton J. McGee, has a rich choral tradition that includes numerous performances on radio and television, as well as performances across the United States and most recently internationally over the Internet. In 2006 the UAPB Vesper Choir took a performance tour to Italy. The Choir performed eight concerts in four cities: in Rome, including presenting the music for the Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican; in Venice, including a performance at historic St. Mark’s Cathedral; and two concerts each in Florence and Milan.

Dr. Bates, assisted this year by new Voice Instructor Ms. Melissa Davis, conducts the Vesper Choir in an entertaining and varied program of classical choral literature, spirituals, choral jazz, commercial music, music of popular appeal and gospel selections. The Choir continues the tradition of studying and performing choral masterpieces and contemporary choral compositions that are of the highest quality. On December 2, 2012, the Vesper Choir presented its 59th annual performance of Handel’s Messiah with full orchestra. The Vesper Choir has had several performances with the Pine Bluff Symphony and in March

of 2010 the Vesper Choir performed the concert version of the opera Porgy and Bess with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Most recently, the UAPB Vesper Choir joined with the Arkansas Choral Society in its 83rd annual performance of Handel’s Messiah which was presented at the First Pentecostal Church in North Little Rock. The Choir has presented concerts in cities across the country during the annual spring tours. A highlight of the 2010 performance schedule was a performance at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The Vesper Choir has a mission that is educational, artistic and cultural. It is a service organization and as such performs for significant campus and community events. The Choir also performs for schools, churches and community organizations around the state. The Choir also functions as a laboratory for music majors who will become choir directors when they leave college. Beecher Hicks, prominent theologian, pastor and author; Rev. Smokey Norful, noted contemporary gospel artist; Mr. James McKissic, concert pianist performing in Europe and the U.S. The Chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is Dr. Calvin Johnson and Dr. Michael J. Phil Kaplan & Leslie Singer Since their last appearance with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Holiday Concert in 2010 , the performing careers of Phil Kaplan and Leslie Singer, also known as the Two Jewish Guys has completely stalled out. They return this year to make another go of it. When Phil is not at his primary job as an esteemed attorney with Williams & Anderson, PLC, he seeks work as a mime for children’s parties and bar mitzvahs. Leslie continues his primary position as president, CEO and creative director at his one- man ad agency which specializes in strategic marketing plans for bait shops and all-night car washes. Both men also run a school for senior citizens teaching judo, sky diving and French neo-classic poetry. They also like to help raise money for KUAR public radio even though they themselves don’t make a dime on the deal. In addition to occasionally appearing at the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s Holiday Concert (for which they are very grateful), they appear once a year at the Clinton Presidential Center for their Two Jewish Guys Chanukah Special. Even their loyal fans agree that once a year is enough already.

Artistic Initiatives Please join us in extending special thanks to supporters contributing to the Artistic Initiatives Fund. These donors are, in many cases, making gifts above and beyond their annual giving to ASO. Their generosity is allowing the ASO to explore new ways to bring music to underserved areas of our community and develop concert enhancements for performances at Robinson. To date, we have used the funds for guest artists such as Dmitri Alexeev, George Takei and Michael Torke. Strategic Plan Purpose Statement The ASO exists to connect, enrich, inspire and advance Arkansas through the power of music.

Values The forces that drive the ASO’s aspirations and guide decision making and planning. 1. Courage. Courage to be innovative, creative, curious, adventuresome; courage to undertake risk, demonstrate integrity, and lead. 2. Continual Learning. A culture of being great listeners, of being open to new ideas and applying new learning. 3. Connectivity. Catalyzing relationships through music in diverse geographic, technological and cultural communities. 4. Artistry. Our work is marked by discipline, focus, and accountability. ASO members act upon these values in all aspects of ASO activities. 5. Agility. Demonstrating the ability to respond and adjust to changing circumstances; being flexible, quick, responsive, creative.

At Entergy, we understand that great performances don’t just happen. They are the sum of many parts, each working individually yet in perfect harmony to contribute to the whole.
