Outside School Hours Care and Vacation Care

Bees Creek School Outside Hours School Care and Vacation Program welcomes all new families to our service.

The importance of sport and physical education in schools is often debated when concern is expressed about health and obesity problems in our modern society. One school that sees Sport and Physical Education as an important part of its educational program is The Essington School Darwin.

The Essington School Darwin’s sporting programme develops skills acquired in the curriculum subject of Physical Educ ation. This is taught from Transition to Year 10 by specialist physical education teachers. Students are able to participate in a variety of sporting activities during the year including swimming, athletics, tennis, cross country, rugby, Australian Football, netball, and soccer to name a few. The School sees sport as providing an opportunity for its students to develop a sense of achievement and pride in their effor ts. They also learn teamwork, selfless behaviour, trust, loyalty, socia l skills, responsibilities, sportsmanship, manners and leadership . These skills are seen by the School as also excellent for later life. The Essington School Darwin aims to provide as many oppo rtunities as possible for students to participate in sport within the School, with other schools and within the local and national comm unity. The Principal, David Cannon, said: “We feel it is impo rtant for students to experience the benefits of being in a team as well as being a solo competitor. Many of our students parti cipate in community sporting clubs and represent the School, scho ol zone, Darwin and the Northern Territory in various sporting activities each year”. Beyond the School’s sporting facilities, students also have access to nearby community and commercial sporting facilities such as ovals, tennis courts, a fitness centre and swimming pools . Students at the School’s Senior College at Charles Darwin University are able to use the University’s excellent sporting facilities. Each year all Transition to Year 6 students complete a Swim ming Program on a daily basis over three weeks. In this program students learn confidence in the water and develop various skills assoc iated with water safety and swimming. The School seeks to affirm the efforts, sportsmanship and success of students through Award Certificates at our weekly assembly, and with various awards at different times of the year. Where possible the school develops alliances with local sporting bodies and organizations to facilitate its students’ opportuni ties to participate in sport within the School, between schools and within the Darwin community. The School has a growing sporting competition in its internal House system with students competing in school carni vals in a number of areas including athletics and swimming. Students are also affirmed for their involvement and success in the House Sports system. For further information about The Essington School Darw in and its programs, please phone 8948 1255.
