Darwin Darwin is the largest city in the sparsely populated Northern Territory, with a population of only 136,245. As the only tropical capital City in Australia, it is also the smallest and most northerly of the Austaralian capital cities, and acts as the Top End’s regional centre. Darwin has plenty to offer the traveller. Chairs and tables spill out of street-side restaurants and bars, innovative museums celebrate the city’s past, and galleries showcase the region’s rich indigenous art. Darwin’s cosmopolitan mix − more than 50 nationalities are seamlessly represented here − is typified by the wonderful markets held throughout the dry season. Enjoy Darwin’s balmy weather and eclectic food and culture at outdoor festivals, waterfront restaurants, tropical parklands and art precincts. Get a taste of Darwin at Mindil Beach Markets, sail Darwin Harbour and trace the region’s dramatic history at museums. Nature is well and truly part of Darwin’s backyard and is the gateway to the Litchfield National Park, Kakadu and Arnhem Land that are only a few hours drive away, and lets not forget the unique Tiwi Islands that are a boat-ride away. For locals the perfect weekend is going fishing for barra in a tinny (small boat) with an esky full of cold beer.

Seasons

Eight thousand years of annual monsoon cycles dictate the Top End’s swing between wet and dry seasons.

Referred to as the ‘wet’ season, the months inclusive of November to April are characterised by increased humidity followed by monsoonal rains and storms. The Indigenous inhabitants of this region characterise the wet season by the changes in seasonal fruit and flowers, lush greenery and flowing water, with the weather greatly influencing their campsites and traditional food sourcing. The ‘dry’ season, between May and October, provided opportunity for the nomadic Indigenous communities to move freely and partake in ceremonial activities. The biting cold of the Central regions during this season sees the mercury drop below zero degrees through the evening. The changing of the seasons in October sees an increase of wildlife within the region with animals breeding, the emergence of hibernating reptiles and an increase of native fauna looking for the fresh fruit and seeds provided by the incoming wet season.

Things TO DO IN DARWIN

No matter your holiday preference, there are ‘musts’ for every visitor to Darwin that should not be missed. The famous outdoor markets at Mindil beach (April-October only) or the Parap markets offering fresh, local cuisine and dishes from nearby South East Asia and beyond, combined with street performers, live entertainment and market stalls offering artisan items are compulsory! The Museum and Art Gallery NT is a great starting point for a cultural and historic journey through the region. The Aboriginal art collection is a highlight, as is the entire room dedicated to Cyclone Tracy. Set in a scenic location overlooking the Arafura Sea, a trip to the museum can be paired with lunch next door enjoying breathtaking ocean views. No trip to Darwin is complete without a stroll along Darwin’s Waterfront to enjoy a sumptuous meal or a chilled beverage at one of the superb establishments dotted across the promenade. There’s also fun for the whole family with safe swimming in the Wave Lagoon all year round.

DARWIN HAS PLENTY TO OFFER TRAVELLERS, WHETHER IT’S AN ADVENTURE-FILLED ESCAPE OR A RELAXING BREAK WITH ALL

You can also take a cruise along Darwin Harbour at sunset, get as close as you’ll ever want to get to the amazing creatures at Crocosaurus Cove, or enjoy a movie at the Deckchair Cinema. The natural beauty of the outdoors can be enjoyed while fishing, camping, swimming, hiking or simply observing. Day trips from Darwin are part of Territory life for locals and

Fishing IN THE TOP END

NO MATTER WHAT YOUR PREFERENCE FOR ANGLING - BILLABONG AND ESTUARY OR DEEP SEA COASTAL SPORTFISHING IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY OFFERS SOME OF THE BEST TROPICAL ACTION IN AUSTRALIA.

With such a diverse range of spoils to be taken from NT waters, fishing in the region is a pastime enjoyed by many. Whether you are a beginner, expert coastal or recreational river angler, the beautiful waterways within each region offer some spectacular species. Barramundi fishing in the wide Daly and Victoria rivers is best between March and May, when the popular breed is most active. These tidal rivers offer many other breeds year round, with cod, mangrove jack and mud crabs highly sought after. Other great sport and reef fish including queenfish, Spanish mackeral, golden snapper, coral trout and red emperor can be found in the pristine coastal waterways of the Top End. Many tourism operators offer daily fishing charters that provide in-depth knowledge of the best casting points and techniques for reeling in the aggressive predator species.

HERITAGE CENTRE

The original museum, first opened to the public in 1988 on a pre WWII Navy victualing yard building leased from the NT Government and is now used by the Society as a storage and restoration facility. Negotiations were carried out for some time between the Society, the United States Air Force & the Northern Territory Government to obtain a Boeing B-52 bomber and to build a museum to house and display it. This was achieved in June 1990 when the new Darwin Aviation Museum was officially opened with

a fully refurbished B-52G bomber on permanent loan from the USAF. This is only 1 of 2 B-52 bombers to be available on display anywhere in the world outside of the USA. The name was changed in September 1994 to the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre, which placed more emphasis on the pioneering men and women who since 1919 have helped in the development of the Northern Territory through aviation. There are 19 aircraft on display, as well as 38 major displays, relics of crashed aircraft, and 21 engines.

THE AVIATION HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF THE NORTHERN TERRITORY WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1976 BY A SMALL GROUP OF ENTHUSIASTS WHO SOUGHT TO PRESERVE AVIATION RELICS SALVAGED AFTER THE DESTRUCTION OF CYCLONE TRACY.

The exhibitions are being continually updated by a small group of enthusiastic volunteers of the Aviation Heritage Society of the Northern Territory, a non-profit association. Aircraft include a B-25 Mitchell Bomber – one of the few surviving in the world with a proven track record. There are Mirage and Sabre jet fighters, and a Royal Australian Navy Wessex helicopter that assisted in the clean-up of Darwin after Cyclone Tracy struck on Christmas Day 1974. The latest acquisition is an F-111C which arrived by road from Amberley on 16 June 2013.

BAR BODY BAR OFFER PROFESSIONAL MASSAGE SERVICES TO RELIEVE A C H E S A N D PA I N S , O R S I M P LY PROVIDE YOU WITH SOME MUCH N E E D B L I S S A N D R E L A X AT I O N .

Body Bar now has 4 convenient locations in Darwin, Casuarina, Palmerston and Katherine and is a proudly local owned and operated business. From students needing relief from the poor posture of studying, to office workers needing to get the blood flowing at the end of a desk bound week, Body bar has a range of massage techniques to suit each individual’s requirements. Deep Tissue Massage (Oil Massage) Deep tissue massage is a style of massage that is designed to get into the connective tissue of the body. Deep tissue massage uses a variety of techniques to deeply penetrate the muscles and fascia, loosening them and releasing tension. Many clients have a more intense experience with a deep tissue massage, but also feel that it is more beneficial, because it addresses deepseated muscle pains.

Relaxation massage (Oil Massage) This kind of massage is oil based and uses gentle, soft, slow hand and elbow movements that are rhythmic and flowing at the appropriate pressure which you need. The pressure is deeply relaxing, but not painful. Dry massage Dry massage focuses on the meridians, acupressure points and sore spots in order to alleviate muscular pain and joint problems. The benefits of the dry massage also include promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis, enhancing flexibility of joints, and calming your mind. Foot Massage (reflexology) Reflexology works on reflex zones on our feet that correspond to different organs, glands and other areas of the body. By stimulating these special areas, reflexology relieves tension,

55 N T LIFE

improves circulation and helps promote the natural function of the related parts of the body. Hot stone massage Hot stone massage is based on classic massage therapy and the application of heated smooth, flat stones to massage the whole body. These special stones are placed on key points on the body, and also held by massage therapist to scrape, glide and press certain areas of the body. The warmth of stones has a variety of benefits, such as improving circulation, relieving muscular ache, calming the nervous system, and rebalancing the body and mind. For more detailed information about the massage techniques offered and some great healthy living tips check out their website at www.bodybardarwin.com.au.

More than 80,000 Saltwater Crocodiles now roam the waterways of Northern Australia, yet they are rarely ever seen. The crocodile is a cold blooded animal, they bask in the sun during the cooler months of June, July, and early August. Most of the time it’s warm, Crocodiles are buried in the mud, under the trees in the shade. Here on the Adelaide River, the crocodiles know our boats, they leave their place of hiding, knowing they may be fed. This happens all year round!! Our crew will ensure you are equipped with the knowledge you need to survive your stay in Australia’s Northern Territory.

Crab Claw Island’s ‘Breezes’ restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving a wide selection of tasty, al a carte meals. The fully licensed bar holds a selection of wines, icy cold beers and soft drinks that will quench the thirst and cleanse the pallet of any weary traveller. Lovely ‘outback NT’ experience. stayed here for 6 nights, but could have easy stayed longer. The staff are so relaxed and friendly, nothing is a bother. Crab Claw Island is the perfect place for family getaway… the beaches are pristine, white quartz sand – perfect for sandcastles, the harbour is calm and full of fish – making first time fishing experiences full of all the right kinds of memories, the swimming pools are fenced with child proof gates and both pools have safe access, the restaurant has a special kids menu with health options as well as the ‘traditional’ holiday fare, high-chairs and knives and forks just the right size for little hands. We have two accommodation options to suit families who need a bit more space. Our Family Cabins are set on the rear of the main walkway, approximately

15m from the beach. They are twice the size of our standard cabins and fitted with a double and four single beds, a dining table and chairs, large refrigerator, and en-suite bathroom facilities. Alternatively ‘The house’ is at ground level with absolute beach frontage. It has two bedrooms, each with a double and two single beds; a large balcony with a gate, dining table and chairs and BBQ.

Board a croc-jumping cruise on the Adelaide River and see massive crocs leap from the water for bait. Next stop, Litchfield National Park, just an hour and a half drive from Darwin, features a myriad of diverse environments including rugged sandstone escarpments, perennial spring-fed streams, monsoon rainforest, magnetic termite mounds, waterfalls and historic ruins. You can spend as little as one day in the park, taking a quick dip in each of the plunge pools and rock holes on the drive through. But to really experience the true beauty of Litchfield, it’s best to camp overnight. Melville and Bathurst Islands, known collectively as the Tiwi Islands, lie 80 kilometers north of Darwin, or an easy day trip from Darwin via boat or light aircraft. The Tiwi people are world famous for their art, extending from traditional forms of paintings on bark and canvas to wood carvings, distinctive silk screened cloth, woven accessories and pottery. There are several art galleries on both Melville and Bathurst Island and you are more than welcome to purchase directly from the artists. The Tiwi Islands are also famous for their love of sports, in particular – Australian Rules Football. The Tiwi Football Grand Final is held in March and is a must-see if you are in the area at the time.

For the more adventurous, the Lost City’s impressive freestanding sandstone blocks, or the abandoned Blythe homestead are a favourite for 4WD visitors.

There is a wide range of accommodation in Kakadu. Uluru For both its Aboriginal custodians and the

travellers that flock here, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, 440 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs, represents the physical

and spiritual heart of Australia. The region encompasses Uluru and Kata-Tjuta, positioned alongside the township of Yulara, Kings Canyon, and the intermittent outback cattle stations. Rising from the broad desert plain in the deep centre of Australia, Uluru is Australia’s most recognisable natural icon. It stands 348 metres high, and, like an iceberg, has most of its bulk below the surface. It is located 440 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. To the west by 40 kilometres of Uluru/Ayers Rock is Kata Tjuta, also known as The Olgas. This massive pile of rock domes dates back 500 million years. Both Uluru/Ayers Rock and Kata Tjuta/The Olgas have great cultural significance for the Anangu traditional landowners, who lead walking tours that inform about the local flora and fauna, bush foods and the Aboriginal Dreamtime stories of the area.

elcome to the Northern Territory, the land of magnificent scenery, untouched natural beauty and a rich heritage encompassing iconic cultural treasures, which is now home to the newest Australian water to hit the domestic and international beverages market. The brands on offer are - Akuna Blue ™ Still & Sparkling, the premium product range encased in stunningly unique glass bottles & Akuna Springs™, the convenience range available in PET bottles. The beautiful tasting water is drawn from a natural artesian aquifer that’s formation is over 1 million years old. The mineral-rich water contained in the South Alligator Dolostone aquifer at Acacia Hills in Darwin, NT, is naturally purified over 10,000 years through a series of limestone and quartz rocks, giving the water a crisp and refreshingly smooth taste. The water is naturally purified, which means no chemicals or minerals are artificially infused; just a fine balance of silky smooth water drawn from an unadulterated source. The brand name ‘Akuna’ originates from the dialect of the Larrakia people, the traditional inhabitants of the Top End. It means ‘free flowing water’ and ‘the way forward, a term that is perfectly synonymous with the brand. Though the hero of both the product ranges is the single source pure artesian water, much thought and attention has also been paid to the aesthetic appeal and appearance of both Akuna Blue™ & Akuna Springs™. The custom designed glass bottles are highly desirable collectibles, showcasing embossed indigenous art paying tribute to the rich Australian history and culture. The pure artesian water not only tastes beautiful, but also possesses incredible health benefits! It boasts a high pH level of 8.1 for high alkalinity to balance the body’s acidity levels, aid digestion and assist with removing harmful toxins in the body. The water also has high levels of Silica for healthy hair, skin and nails, low sodium for heart health and is rich in minerals like magnesium and calcium for every day function. Akuna Blue™ Still & Sparking and Akuna Springs™ will be available nationally and internationally in 2017. For more information, please visit www.akunablue.com.au, www.akunasprings.com.au
