launched our first topper! The idea at first was to remain anonymous when posting postbox topper pictures online, with us creeping out at night to plant the topper, under the cover of darkness. Out on our daily walks, we noticed people stopping to admire and photograph the topper, and we were so glad to be making people smile in such a dark and isolating time!

For me, it all began in the first Covid lockdown, which coincided with my recovery from breast cancer.

Looking through Facebook, I saw the wonderful creations across the UK of these postbox toppers, and on daily walks around my area, I saw a sad-looking, bare-headed postbox crying out for an injection of colourful life, which no one had yet claimed. Enthusiastically, I researched patterns and soon realised this was a growing hobby, with groups on Facebook sharing their own patterns and creations. With masses of time on my hands, and to distract from my treatment and the Covid lockdown, I set to work on my first topper: an Easter-inspired scene.

After 3 weeks, and with the help of my grandson, whom I taught to knit when he was younger, we

After the success of the first Easter-themed topper, made up of chicks, rabbits and daffodils, I continued to create additional toppers for summer, Halloween, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Christmas, Remembrance Day, the Queen’s passing, Valentine’s Day and my current topper, for the King’s Coronation. Once the pictures have been posted online, I enjoy reading the positive comments, giving me the inspiration to create my next topper.

Although initially incognito, I think my secret is now out locally, with my community spotting me swapping the toppers, and I do occasionally get comments in person while transitioning to the next themed topper. I really enjoy giving people a small moment of happiness when they walk or drive past, and I will endeavour to continue to maintain my seasonal contributions to the local community!

DARTFORD’S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE RIVER THAMES

Thames. Up until the late 1800s, it was deemed one of the ‘finest trout chalk’ rivers in the country and was extremely popular amongst anglers.

Beginning in Bromley, the River Cray joins the Darent at Dartford Creek and today both chalk streams are home to a wide variety of fish. Today, walkers can enjoy the beauty of the River Darent on the 19-mile Darent Valley Path.

Another of Dartford’s rivers, the River Cran, was little more than a stream that ran through Central Park and near to what is now Cranford Road. In 1923, one of the stone arches from the medieval town bridge was rebuilt there and can still be seen today, although the river itself now flows underground.

At the end of April, I took a boat trip along the Thames with the Port of London. This river, which has served us for generations, is still very busy.

The Port of London is the largest in the UK and since last year has been a Freeport. This status means it is expected to grow in the next few years.

From the water you really get to see how much the Thames has developed with numerous businesses working on its shores. There are many warehouses and factories along the banks as well as aggregate and cargo terminals.

The Port of London Authority works hard to ensure the river can operate to its full potential, particularly ensuring the riverbed is sufficiently dredged to allow large container ships to access the port. The vision is for the Port of London to be the number one net zero commercial port with transportation of light freight to London with more and more businesses using the river as an alternative to road traffic.

At the end of the 18th century, one writer described seeing large wharfs on the Thames at Greenhithe and how a ferry was used to transport horses and cattle over the river to Essex.

Dartford has also been a river crossing point since the Roman times, with the river connecting London with the rest of the world and the south through the Darenth Valley.

It’s thousands of years since our rivers brought people to Dartford and it is great to see them being used more and more today, for both business and pleasure.

Dartford’s relationship with the Thames has evolved over thousands of years and it is because of this river and some of our smaller ones, that Dartford first became a settlement.

The banks of the River Darent provided fertile farmland, and this is why people settled on them, together with its link to London. The river begins its journey in Westerham, flowing more than 20 miles to the tidal estuary in Dartford where it joins the 8

HEALTHY LIVING CENTRE - THE GROWING COMMUNITY PROJECT Healthy Living Centre Dartford is working to develop a thriving food growing network across the borough, connecting with schools, community groups and passionate growers to encourage a relationship with where our food comes from. Utilising unused space to grow food, we aim to promote community cohesion through enjoyment of food – growing, cooking and eating – and providing opportunities for community action to encourage biodiversity, share skills, knowledge, resources, and access to fresh food and healthy exercise in the outdoors.

Our partners include Dartford Science and Technology College, The Galaxy Trust, Wentworth Primary School, Our Lady’s Catholic School, Friends of the Earth, Spirit’s Rest, Big Barn and Planet Dartford. Frances Jones joined our team at the beginning of March, bringing her expertise in horticulture to support the Growing Community Project, and is the contributor for this month’s Dartford Living article.

March – April This month brings a new start for many things, including myself! At the start of March, I took on the position of project lead for the Growing Community initiative. Being from a Horticultural background, a gardener by trade, the first thing I wanted to do was get my gardening boots on and get to work!

My first port of call was at our Community Garden in Cedar Road, getting things in shape ready for the growing season ahead, and preparing ground for gardening club sessions.

The herb garden was cleared of weeds, plants moved to make room and then some new perennial varieties added, all labelled so people can see what they are.

The flower bed by the entrance was weeded and some new decorative perennial plants introduced - Geraniums, Sedums, Daisies and annual bedding to add a bit of colour. The raised bed was also weeded, and Gladioli bulbs planted for summer.

I was given a new plot and have taken over the maintenance of this, as well as another raised bed. These will both be used for Gardening

Club growing. Our Wednesday Gardening club is going well, and membership has grown.

Each week I go through various horticultural practices, explaining the different methods used and why, starting from ground clearing

and seed sowing through to planting.

In March we took part in the RHS Big Seed Sow, and each week we spend time discussing how seeds germinate, how they grow, when is the best time to pot on and when best to plant

them outside or to sow directly into the soil.

As well as meetings with various members of staff in school settings regarding growing spaces, we have taken part in site visits around Dartford and assisted with volunteer days for local school and community projects. The first being the Food Forest project at Dartford Science and Technology College. During the first session we helped to build raised beds and clear brush to make space for the new greenhouse. At the second volunteer day at DSTC we helped to create a new wildlife pond and fill the raised bed with layers of topsoil and mushroom compost.

During our Easter Family Activity Day at Tree Estate Community Centre, Growing Community set up a seed sowing stall, where people attending could learn how to sow seeds. We had saved up cardboard tubes to make pots and supplied those along with compost and

pond, that will be getting a facelift too!

Runner Bean, Pea and Sunflower seeds. The Gardening Club team are having a competition to see who can grow the tallest sunflower and the most productive legume plants!

With May upon us there’s no rest for the wicked… we’ve lots of projects in the pipeline, and numerous jobs to do on the allotment.

We’re raising vegetable seedlings to share in our seedling swaps and to encourage “growing your own” at home.

Tending to *“Ann’s plot” is next on my list of projects, and we’re taking on an additional plot, which will increase the amount of fresh, homegrown food Healthy Living Centre Dartford will have available to use in its cookery projects and community lunch clubs. And once our tadpoles have made their way out of the

TALES FROM THE RIVERBANK: WALK THROUGH HISTORY ALONG THE DARENT VALLEY (PART ONE)

HAWLEY Summer is the perfect time for an adventure, so a fascinating insight into life during this time, as why not head out of Dartford and follow the Darent well as the Bronze age, Iron age and beyond.

Villages sprang up around the river, which was used for transporting grain and other goods.

Sutton-at-Hone and Lullingstone are derived from Saxon names while William de Eynsford made his mark on the area from the 1080s, when Eynsford Castle originates. Lullingstone castle is mentioned in the Doomsday book and was the Lord Mayor of London’s residence from around 1279. Strictly speaking, it is more of a manor house than castle but remains a grade two listed building.

Another notable 13th century site on the route is St John’s Jerusalem, the chapel (now owned by the National Trust) on a moated island in Sutton at Hone. Originally a monastery, the chapel and surrounding gardens are still accessible to the public on certain days.

The 15th century saw the first pedestrian bridge erected over the river at Dartford, which had grown into a thriving market town. The river became central to local industry, particularly as a resource for local mills. Flour, cotton and gunpowder mills were established between the Dartford-Farningham section of the Darent and at one point there were thirty eight paper mills in existence!

CASTLE FARM/SHOREHAM

Royal visitors to the area have included Henry VIII and Queen Anne, who both stayed at Lullingstone Castle. King Henry also spent time at Otford Palace, built in 1514 by William Warham, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Apparently the design was inspired

by Lullingstone’s architecture, especially its gatehouse, although only part of a tower remains today (and is a scheduled monument). Henry enjoyed deer hunting in the local countryside, which remained largely rural despite the impact of mills and growing industry. Valley dwellers, generally farmers and labourers, liked to enjoy their free time too – often in public houses, which still exist today. You might want to visit one or two on your tour – Farningham alone has two pubs dating back to the 16th / 17th century: the Lion and the Pied Bull, originally a coaching inn and terminus for carriages to London.

Next month we’ll explore the Darent’s history further, looking at how the industrial revolution made its mark on the valley and surrounding villages. There are wartime stories too, with Darent valley residents playing their part in the war effort – both on land and in the skies above! And, being July, one particular (rather profitable) crop gets a mention. You’ll be sure to spot it if you’re heading Shoreham way this summer (Clue: it’s purple and has a very distinctive scent…)

BACK HOME I had a flying visit back to Dartford last week.

Eldest Offspring invited me to stay with her over coronation weekend. Leaving Other Half to feed the cats, I boarded the ferry and sailed to the mainland. Apart from roadworks on the A3, an overturned lorry and the usual creep up the M25, the journey was uneventful.

There will always be those who argue the upkeep of the Royal Family simply isn’t worth it.

I hope the new King will streamline the working family, cutting loose those who benefit from its largesse but do very little. They will have to find other ways of making a living. It will be a step in the right direction towards a modern, working and valid Royal Family to take us into the future.

At a time when so many of us are struggling to make end meet, such an extravagant ceremony may have seemed out of place. However, I’d rather have some colour and spectacle than be a republic. I do believe having the monarchy is one of the few experiences we can offer the rest of the world. The income generated from visitors to the Royal palaces and associated royal events during 2019/20 reached £71.5 million pounds according to a recent report in The Independent.

As we age, we often experience normal changes in our sleeping patterns, such as becoming sleepy earlier, waking up earlier, or enjoying less deep sleep. Sleep is just as important to our physical and emotional health as it was when we were younger.

These tips can help you overcome age-related sleep problems and get a good night’s rest.

Maintain a consistent sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same times every day, even on weekends.

Keep busy. Social activities, seeing the family, volunteering, or learning something new can all help exercise the mind and tire it out for the night.

Don’t watch TV or look at a tablet or computer for an hour before bedtime. Doing these activities can suppress melatonin levels and affect subsequent sleep.

Limit caffeine late in the day. Avoid caffeine (from coffee, tea, soda, and chocolate) late in the day.

Minimize liquid intake before sleep. Limit what you drink within the hour and a half before bedtime.

Get out into the sunshine. Sunshine regulates melatonin levels and hence affects sleep cycles.

Try to get outside for a little while every day. When at home, open the curtains during the day and move your chair into a sunny spot of the room.

It is important to remember that just because you are sleeping less, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have sleep ‘problems’. However, if you are not sleeping well, having to get up frequently at night, or not waking up feeling refreshed, consider visiting the doctor for more advice and information.

Health and wellbeing If you are a carer, it is important to look after your own health and wellbeing. After all, you can’t pour from an empty cup. 60% of carers have a long term health problem or disability. They may struggle to access health services due to their caring responsibilities. All GP surgeries have a carers register – please let us know if you are a carer so that we can add you to it. Our social prescribing team and/or care coordinators can provide advice and support, and put you in contact with other agencies that can help to support you as a carer.

Who cares for the carers?

National Carers Week (5-11 June) is a time for us all to recognise and offer thanks to those unsung heroes – our unpaid carers.

Carers may report feeling lonely or isolated. This can contribute to stress and depression. It is important that you recognise if this is happening and seek help. Caring can involve a range of emotions, from feelings of resentment and guilt, to grief and even anticipatory grief, where you grieve for the person your loved one once was.

If you are struggling with your feelings, talk to someone about it. This might be a friend or family member, or you could join a carers support group and speak to those who are going through the same. If you are feeling overwhelmed, reach out to your GP practice or other agencies such as the Samaritans or Mind.

A carer is anyone who looks after a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness, addiction, or who needs extra help as they grow older. There are an estimated 5.7 million carers in the UK and many do not recognise that they are a carer. Compare this to the 1.3 million NHS employees. SERV KENT, THE BLOODRUNNERS We are able to quickly respond to requests for donated breast milk which helps mothers & their babies at this important time in their lives.

Since February 2013, SERV Kent volunteers have been working in partnership with the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Trust to supply them with regular stocks of blood which are carried onboard the aircraft, enabling the specialist Doctors & Paramedics to provide instant emergency treatment at the scene of an incident. This service was the first of its kind in the UK outside London and ensures that the people of the three Counties receive the highest quality trauma care possible. Many lives have been saved since the service began.

We have also been working with the Demelza Children’s Hospice & the Ellenor Hospice Group since 2013 to transfer urgent medication and equipment between the Hospice and hospitals, pharmacies and even to family homes to bring parents whatever is needed for their children.

What to do: Preheat your oven to 180° C Fan. Put the Plain Flour and Icing Sugar in a large bowl.

Add the cold, cubed Butter and rub the flour into the butter – using only your fingertips – until the mix resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Stir the Egg Yolk into the flour mixture and combine into a dough. Pop into the fridge for 20 minutes while you weigh out the ingredients for the filling.

Press the dough evenly into a greased & lined 8” square cake/brownie tin. Silicon brownie trays are good as there is no need to grease/line them.

Prick the shortbread with a fork.

Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes until the surface looks slightly golden.

While the base is baking, make the filling. It is important to add the lemon mix onto the base while the shortbread is still hot so the lemon curd will start cooking immediately.

To make the filling, simply whisk all the ingredients together until light and fluffy.

LEMON MERINGUE SQUARES

These are equally delicious - and moreish - with or without the meringue layer.

Cut into different size squares for adults and children.

What you need: For the base: 175g Plain Flour 75g Icing Sugar 150g Cold Butter, cut into small cubes 1 Egg Yolk For the filling: 2 Large Eggs 200g Caster Sugar 2Tbsp Plain Flour 4Tbsp Lemon Juice – Either juiced fresh or from a bottle is fine.

For the topping: 2 Egg Whites – it’s important to make sure no Egg Yolk is in this.

As soon as the base is looking golden, pour the lemon mix on top of the hot shortbread, return to the oven and bake for another 1525 minutes – until the surface starts to turn a light golden.

Take out of the oven for a few minutes while you make the meringue – but these treats are equally delicious without the meringue if you prefer.

To make the meringue, whisk the Egg Whites until they create soft peaks. Continue whisking while you add the Caster Sugar - gradually - until all the Sugar has been combined and the mixture creates stiff peaks when the whisk is lifted out.

Spoon or pipe the meringue, carefully, over the surface of the lemon mix and pop back in the oven for 5 minutes (or until perfectly coloured).

Leave to cool, then cut into squares and enjoy! xxx
