The Big Interview: Sir Mick Jagger Returns Home!

What is it like being back at your old school and how much has it changed?

Well, it's changed a lot, one would hope, since I've been here, it's just a really long time ago. It's changed a lot for the better, I would hope. And there's lots of new buildings, but there's still a lot of it, I recognise exactly as it was. So it brings back a lot of memories. And it's nice to see kids that seem happy, you know, the basketball team seems to be, I just met, they seem to be, you know, enjoying the game. It's more of a bigger sport than it was and it's great.

I mean, it’s a very successful school and it features a lot, however you measure that achievement. I think measuring, it is the happiness of the kids and their achievements in the school, and of course their exam results. And getting into university, which brings Dartford Grammar School into the top group of schools in the country, which is pretty amazing if you think about it.

And it's 25 years of your performing arts centre. Particularly in a state school, when music and drama provision is getting cut back, you're providing something like that. How important are the creative arts?

Well, I think, yeah, the creative arts are super important.

You know, education's not only about learning English, all of these things are important. You have to learn English, you have to learn maths. You should learn languages, which this school is particularly good at, which is, as we all know, in decline in the UK. But this school is in the ascendance, so that's a very good thing.

But of course expressing yourself, you can't only express yourself in English and you can't only express yourself in maths and, if you can, express yourself through song, drama, art, dance. All these things are important and the school does all those things. So I'm very proud of that. My involvement's been, honestly, pretty minimal in a real way but I do feel connected to it and I think all the people involved with it have done a really wonderful job.

Now you've mentioned music a lot in your speech, but originally you wanted to be a journalist or a politician.

Where did it all go right?

Well, I mean, I think the thing was in those days, when I was being brought up, music wasn't much of a career. It wasn't a career path. I mean, now, you know, my son learned (music) in university. I'm talking about, in the last two years, my son learned the business of music. It's a course and all kinds of other things involved in music.

Whereas in those days it wasn't a career path at all. It was really, for most, musicians or singers were people that came from a sort of poor background who got a lucky break and were probably good looking. And they got a lucky break and maybe they went on to do good things. And maybe they went on to do things for a very short time. So it wasn't a career path. So people that were educated weren't supposed to go into that sort of career. So, but of course, that all changed very, very quickly in the early sixties. Do you think we put enough weight on the music industry in this country?

It generates so much wealth for the country. I think everyone knows that the British Isles produces a lot of musicians and it has a lot of soft power and it makes a lot of money. And that applies to one or two other countries too, like Sweden. And so I think it's very important for this country and we still continue to produce really great people.

I know your Dad popularised basketball.

We've met the basketball team. The teams seem to get bigger every time I meet them.

You yourself played, but you're also a keen cricketer. What do you reckon about the Ashes and Kent's chances next year?

Yeah. I think Kent's chances are good, this improving team. As to the Ashes, I think it's finally going to be one of the closer (ones), hopefully a close one, because we haven't won it in ages. I just wish it was on a bit earlier, but I'm really looking forward to it. Now there's a lot of chat about it, we've been talking about it already today. So I'm looking forward to that series very much.

And finally, what's your advice to somebody who wants to star in any career? You've done it. What would you recommend?

You've got to be passionate about it, I think. You have to be passionate about it and if you work really hard at it and not give up. I mean, and you have to have a lot of luck.

BE A PART OF CHANGE WITH ADSS In Dartford, the 2021 Census showed that 10.5% of residents identified as Black, Black British, Black Welsh, Caribbean or African. A further 3.1% identified as mixed or multiple ethnicities, 9.9% as Asian, Asian British or Asian Welsh, and 2.0% as other ethnic groups. All of these groups saw an increase in population since 2011.

In July 2023, Dartford was recorded as having one of the highest proportions of people aged 65 and over living with dementia in England. By October 2025, 76.3% (1,007 people) of Dartford residents aged 65 and over had received a dementia diagnosis.

Dementia affects 1 in 3 people in the UK, with individuals from Black and South Asian communities at higher risk, particularly of developing dementia at a younger age. This increased risk is linked to higher rates of vascular conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and greater levels of deprivation.

For example, high blood pressure increases the risk of stroke, which is more common in Black communities. One in four people who experience a stroke will go on to develop dementia.

Research conducted in 2020 found that many South Asian and Black communities are more likely to live in areas of deprivation. This can create barriers to education, housing, and healthcare. These communities are also more likely to experience higher levels of pollution and poor-quality living environments, further increasing dementia risk.

Across many cultures and ethnicities in the UK, there remains stigma and a lack of understanding about dementia— what it is, how to obtain a diagnosis, and how to support someone to live well with the condition.

Reflections and Resolutions for the New Year

As another year draws to a close, we prepare to welcome 2026 with renewed hope and anticipation. The past year has been marked by extraordinary advancements in science, technology, and global connectivity, yet it has also brought significant geopolitical turbulence and uncertainty. In the midst of these contrasting realities, a recurring question continues to surface: despite all our progress and material success, why do so many of us still struggle to find lasting peace and happiness?

We come into this world with a natural desire to be happy. However, as life unfolds, we often find ourselves chasing happiness in ways that leave us unfulfilled. This realisation has shaped my first resolution for the new year: to consciously embrace happiness. I want to prioritise the activities and choices that genuinely bring joy and contentment. Being different has sometimes meant that people see me differently, and in the past, this deeply affected me. But I now understand that happiness is an inner practice. Even when circumstances are not ideal, I will work on remaining centred. Often, we contribute to our own unhappiness and then assign blame elsewhere. By cultivating happiness from within, we can transform both our inner world and the world around us.

My second resolution is to cultivate stronger focus. Just as the body requires physical exercise to stay strong, the mind needs consistent training to remain disciplined and healthy. I hope to achieve this through meditation, mindful breathing, and paying close attention to even the smallest daily tasks. By sharpening my focus on simple routines, I believe I can gradually build the mental strength needed to handle more complex and demanding responsibilities. A focused mind is a calm mind, and a calm mind can navigate challenges with clarity.

My third resolution is to maintain a healthy diet—both physically and emotionally. What we consume shapes who we become. I plan to follow a balanced, nutritious diet and avoid gluten, as it often triggers anxiety for me. Equally important is being selective about the information I consume—what I read, watch, or listen to. Emotional well-being depends greatly on the quality of our mental “diet.”

Because I am autistic, I choose my resolutions with thoughtful care. Yet I believe these goals—seeking happiness, focus, and mindful nourishment—are universal aspirations that can guide anyone toward a more meaningful and fulfilling 2026.

Mindful Beginnings: How ‘dots’ Supports Children’s Emotional Growth Mindful Beginnings: How ‘dots’ Supports Children’s Emotional Growth At KatieB Kids day nursery, our youngest learners are developing key life skills through a specially designed programme called dots. Created by the Mindfulness in Schools Project (MiSP) for three to six-year-olds, dots is a gentle yet powerful mindfulness curriculum that supports children’s awareness, connection, and emotional understanding in a fun and age-appropriate way.

Each dots session focuses on a different aspect of mindfulness: the practice of paying kind, curious attention to the present moment.

What Makes dots Special?

Dots is based around three key themes: • Awareness– helping children notice what they feel and think, grounding their attention in the present moment.

• Connection– encouraging empathy, kindness, and understanding of others.

• Emotion– building emotional literacy- recognising feelings, learning how to self-regulate, and understanding choices.

Practices are introduced gently, often through guided play, stories, and simple breathing or attention exercises, allowing children to enjoy being fully present and calm.

Benefits for Young Children Our preschool children at KatieB Kids love dots because the sessions are engaging, playful, and tailored to their developmental stage. Over time, we’ve observed benefits such as: • Increased calmness during transitions or group activities.

• Better emotional vocabulary- children are learning to name feelings like “frustrated,” “happy,” or “worried.”

• Quieter moments of focus during art, reading, and play.

Our MiSP mindfulness trainer, Dr Nick Buckley, has spent many years training adults, most often teachers, early years educators, and school staff. But he became very interested in the ‘dots’ curriculum for young children when MiSP developed this a couple of years ago. He said, “I think that ‘dots’ can help children to develop behaviours and skills which reduce the very habits that I have spent years helping adults to get out of.” When asked why he particularly enjoyed teaching ‘dots’ he said, “I know it’s a cliché, but I learn something new every time I teach ‘dots’. Mindfulness is about cultivating a beginner’s mind, and the Oaks children still have this. There is always joy, and laughter, which means they have a light-hearted appetite for something with such serious value”.

Alongside their peers, children are encouraged to practise mindfulness not only at nursery, but also carry these skills into their home routines.

Mindful Moments at Home: Parent Tips Here are some simple ways parents can bring dots-inspired mindfulness into everyday family life: 1. Chest and Tummy Breathing: Sitting quietly together, place one hand firmly on your chest and the other on your tummy. Notice, once you have allowed your breathing to settle naturally, whether your chest is moving most, or your tummy, or both the same. Discuss this with each other. Use phrases like “today” or “just now” to highlight the fact that our breathing can vary over time.

2. Five-Senses Game: Ask your child to notice: “What can you see, hear, feel, smell or taste right now?” This is a playful version of grounding in the present moment.

3. Emotion Naming: At bedtime or while drawing, talk about emotions: “How did your body feel when that happened today?” Helping them notice bodily sensations linked to emotions supports emotional literacy.

4. Pause Before Action: Create a small routine like “Stop, Breathe, Choose” when a child feels upset-pause, take a breath, then think about the next kind action.

Let’s Talk EBSA Emotional Based School Avoidance is a subject that has become a widespread situation for many families. Once referred to as ‘school refusal’ – experts realised that this was not the correct term. Most of these children want to be in school. They want to learn, but situations and barriers make it impossible for them to manage school.

With further support outside of school and mental health services limited amid a funding crisis, services are struggling to keep up with demand and do not have the required number of professionals. This has created long wait times, which can be overwhelming for families. Parents/carers are left in limbo, not knowing where to turn or find support for themselves during the process.

As a parent, it can be difficult to know what to do and how to respond when school attendance seems difficult. It stems from an extreme emotional response at the thought of going to school. Whether this is due to friendship issues, difficulty learning or academic pressure, it can be subtle to begin with until the day comes when you cannot get them through the gates.

So, what can you do? First, connect with your child and look at ways you can help them heal from their anxiety and fears of school. Find ways to lower levels of anxiety by encouraging good sleep habits, regular exercise, breathing exercises and regular meals. Help them work out what they feel would need to change to make them more comfortable in school.

Work closely with the school on a plan for their return.

Raising a teen who is struggling can be extremely overwhelming. Time to Talk Teens and Tweens is a parent support group, kindly funded by the National Lottery, which runs every Thursday evening at Welling United FC during term-time.

Steamed Jam Pudding

By The Little Lavinia Bakery

Christmas festivities are over and the winter is taking hold. How about a nice warming pudding that’s delicious served with ladles of custard.

It can be made in a saucepan on the hob – or in a slow cooker.

If you fancy changing it up a bit, swap the jam out for 5tbsp Golden Syrup mixed with 4 tbsp fine breadcrumbs (you can make your own by blitzing a couple of slices of bread in a food processer)

What to do: Grease the pudding bowl with the extra butter.

Spoon the Jam into the bottom of the pudding bowl.

3 Eggs 200g Se lf Raising Flour Zest of 1 O range (op tional) 2tbsp milk You will a ls pudding o need a heat pro b o slow coo owl and a saucep f a k stand in. Y er big enough for n or it dish, but ou can use a glass to make sure /p it is heatp yrex roof!

In a large mixing bowl mix the Butter and the Sugar together until pale and creamy.

Crack the eggs into small bowl and beat gently.

Add the beaten Egg to the Butter/Sugar and mix until combined.

Fold in the Flour gradually.

Add the Orange Zest and Milk and stir to make sure everything is well mixed.

Tip the mixture onto the Jam in the pudding bowl.

To cover the bowl, cut a large circle of greaseproof paper and wet under the tap. Scrunch it up and squeeze any excess water off.

Cover the bowl completely and, using string or a large elastic band, secure round the bowl - under the rim - to hold the paper in place.

Repeat with a dry sheet of greaseproof paper.

Using string, tie a handle across the top of the bowl to help you take it out of the saucepan once cooked.

Carefully place the pudding bowl in a large saucepan or your slow cooker Pour very hot water (ideally from boiled kettle) into the saucepan/slow cooker until it reached about halfway up the side of the bowl.

Pop the lid on the pan/slow cooker.

Bring the water up to a boil, then reduce to a simmer.

Simmer the water for about 2 hours (high setting on slow cooker) until you can feel the pudding is firm, but spongy – you should be able to feel through the greaseproof paper.

Once cooked, carefully remove from the saucepan/slow cooker and remove the greaseproof paper. Remember – it will be very hot and so is the pan/water!

Place a plate on the top of the bowl and flip over (carefully) to turn out the pudding.

Delicious served immediately with custard.

Dartford Choir Marks 10 Years of Music and Community

This January, Dartford’s Make a Noise Choir proudly celebrates its 10th anniversary. A whole decade of singing, laughter, and vibrant community spirit.

Founded in 2016, the choir was started to bring people together through a love of singing and a passion for musical theatre favourites. The set takes classics from shows such as ‘Les Mis’, ‘Evita‘, ‘Moulin Rouge’ and many more. The choir’s repertoire is entirely arranged and conducted by its founder and musical director, Scott Hayes.

Rehearsals take place at St Anselm’s Church at the top of West Hill, where members gather each week to harmonise, laugh, and enjoy making music together. Over the years, the choir has performed in various places, including The Mick Jagger Centre, Cadogan Hall, and The Actors’ Church in Covent Garden. For larger concerts, they are joined by other singers from their sister choirs in Gravesend and Eltham, creating an exciting and powerful choral sound.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL! As we enter 2026, it might come as a surprise to some that New Year, as we know it, has been fairly moveable, depending on culture, religion, lunar path and solstices, being celebrated throughout history on Christmas Day, March 1st and March 25th. Although the January 1st date was informally used in the UK, it was only from 1751, that it was officially adopted.

The chap who laid the rules as it were, was Julius Caesar. He decided it should officially start on January 1st as to honour Janus, the Roman god of gateways and beginnings. Seems like a good reason as any, to me.

However, I think, over time, New Year has lost some of its appeal. Although it is still the most widely celebrated public holiday in the world (thanks Wiki) I wonder if we are more concerned with day-to-day living than marking a monthly changeover. Although it has always been more popular with the under 30s, it seems more people are staying at home, maybe reining the celebrations with just family or friends.

Times have changed. Years ago, New Years Eve was the time for our group of friends to travel from Dartford to London, stopping for a few drinks at various pubs, maybe listen to some bands. We’d grab a burger and around 11pm make our way to Trafalgar Square. The atmosphere was magical. Everyone in high spirits, strangers being friends for a short time. The highlight of the evening was the loud cheer when Big Ben sounded midnight and the year changed, followed by the frantic scramble at Charing Cross to get on any train to Dartford where we would exchange banter and best wishes with fellow revellers.

It wasn’t unusual for complete strangers to give a hug to my friends & I, before wishing us a Happy New Year and then moving on. No-one took offence, no-one thought it at all unusual.

Have such revelries stopped? Are we more concerned about the possible dangers a late night brings? There is an awareness of the possibility of an awkward or unwanted situation developing. There was an innocence about those times which has disappeared and is unlikely to

return.

In these times of upheaval and unease, surely a show of affection to celebrate a new year is just that – a little bit of good cheer to start off the year.

THE SCENT OF SUCCESS Other Half and I have been intrigued by the recent spate of perfume ads on the TV. They’re more entertaining at times, than the scheduled programmes.

Mini storylines, featuring impossibly beautiful young people, the ads are very stylised, sometimes including a celebrity wafting around looking gorgeous, in an existence many of us would envy. It has with little to do with Real Life.

That, however, is their point.

Mind you, I wonder what would happen if I started appearing in public wearing stylised gold corset a la the Jean Paul Gaultier advert. I rather suspect I’d be arrested and lose the few friends I have. Ditto the young girls dancing in a field endlessly calling out ‘daisy’. Again, I think the neighbours might have me carted away somewhere for my own safety!

I know these ads are deliberately unreal. Their job is to persuade us to buy into such lifestyles. I love watching them though. They present an unattainable level of wealth and elegance, suggesting that should I douse myself in such fragrances, untold riches will be mine!

I do like the way they demonstrate the power of women, how they can lead the way; this has been lacking in advertising for far too long.

Perhaps they should be shown throughout the year and not just at Christmas. Forgive me if I don’t appear in the corset, or with back drop of the Eiffel Tower or emerge from a lake of molten gold, but I will let you know if my splash of Chanel No5 changes me into someone ethereal and mysterious. After all, don’t we all occasionally need a squirt of something expensive to lift the spirits?

Dartford Borough Council’s award winning strategy to protect the River Darent

Dartford Borough Council has celebrated outstanding success at the 2025 Royal Town Planning Institute Awards (RTPI) for Planning Excellence last week, winning two prestigious national awards for its pioneering riverside strategy.

On November 27, 2025, The Lower Darent Riverside Strategy won: The award for excellence in planning for the natural environment, and The national competition’s overall award ‘The Silver Jubilee Cup’.

Developed in partnership with global consultancy Arup, The Lower Darent Riverside Strategy sets out a bold, long-term vision to secure sustainable development along the River Darent while strengthening flood defences and improving connections between the river, Dartford town centre, and surrounding communities.

More than 90% of Dartford lies within flood risk zones, making it highly vulnerable to flooding, and high tides and river levels can cause tidal locking, preventing watercourses from discharging. Whilst the current flood risk in the town centre is low, this is expected to rise due to climate change and aging infrastructure.

Leader of the Council Jeremy Kite said: “Looking after Dartford’s natural spaces and making sure they’re protected in the future is one of our proudest achievements. We already do a lot of work to protect the river and keep it clean, and this strategy ensures that we can continue to look after it properly in the future. The River Darent is a huge part of our local identity, and with growing environmental and developmental pressures, we want to make sure that doesn’t change.”

The judges for the Awards for Planning Excellence praised the project, saying: “The project stands out for embedding flood alleviation at the heart of its design and delivery. It offers valuable lessons on a challenge that is being faced by many communities, demonstrating a collaborative and forward-thinking approach that fosters innovation and shared learning. By adopting an ecosystems-focused framework, the strategy delivers sustainable, resilient, and lasting benefits for both people and the natural environment.”

By integrating nature and human systems into placemaking design, the strategy will deliver significant environmental, economic and social benefits throughout the river corridor. Increasing flood risk, driven by climate change, will be managed through nature-based solutions wherever possible, alongside flood defence treatments that encourage people to safely interact with the river.

In urban areas, re-designed river edges will create attractive social spaces that reconnect communities to the river while increasing flood storage capacity. The strategy supports economic growth, protects residents, and sets a new benchmark for climate adaptation.

New bridge locations and improvements to cycle and pedestrian paths will create seamless links between key pathways, including major routes like the Thames Path, National Cycle Route 1 and the Darent Valley Path. The strategy has now been formally adopted by Dartford Borough Council and is referenced within the Dartford Local Plan, ensuring sustainable riverside development for the future.

New Greenhithe Medical Centre to Boost Local Health Services for Residents

Dartford Borough Council Cabinet has agreed plans to work with the NHS Kent and Medway Integrated Care Board (ICB) to deliver a new Medical Centre at Steele Avenue, Greenhithe.

This modern facility will bring two local GP practices — Swanscombe and Bean Partnership and Temple Hill Group — together under one roof, replacing three outdated branch surgeries and creating a single, convenient home for highquality primary medical care.

The new centre will better serve local people by offering a wider range of services in one accessible location, designed around the needs of our existing communities and equipped for the future.

Jeremy Kite, Leader of the Council, said: “We have taken action to unlock a major investment in the health and wellbeing of local residents. By bringing services together in a purpose-built, modern setting, we’re making it easier for people in Greenhithe and the surrounding area to access the care they rely on — in a building designed to support our communities now and in the years ahead.

Our Council is not normally responsible for healthcare delivery locally, but the truth is that without some action, this facility is unlikely to come forward and we are not the sort of Council to standby and allow that to happen.”

Ed Waller, Chief Strategy and Partnerships Officer at NHS Kent and Medway, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Dartford Borough Council to deliver this priority healthcare estates project. The brand-new medical facility will cost in the region of £9 million, funded from NHS Capital funding, along with £3.6m of Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding which has already been committed by the Council.

While the delivery of health facilities is not typically within the remit of the Council it has decided to take the lead and work with the NHS to jointly secure accessible services and improved health outcomes for Dartford residents.

January and February are widely referred to in the travel industry as “Peak” booking season: the time of year when many people lock in their holidays for the months ahead. Annual leave can be requested, dates are open across the calendar, and travellers start searching for the best deals in destinations around the globe. Unfortunately, as demand increases, so does the opportunity for travel fraud.

In recent years there has been a rise in bogus travel firms and scammers posing as legitimate providers. Using slick websites, convincing social media adverts and impersonation tactics, fraudsters target holidaymakers looking to book quickly. Each year, criminals con unsuspecting travellers, leading to losses totalling millions of pounds. The consequences are not purely financial: victims can be left with cancelled plans, non-existent bookings and the disappointment of a ruined break. In many cases, people simply cannot afford to book again.

Certain scams appear time and again. One of the most common is fake holiday accommodation. Fraudsters create convincing copycat websites, hack genuine accounts, or post counterfeit adverts on social media and booking platforms. Travellers may think they have secured a bargain, only to find the property does not exist, is not available, or was never listed by the real owner.

Airline ticket scams are another frequent problem. Customers believe they have bought genuine flights, but are issued fake tickets—or receive nothing at all. Flights are attractive to fraudsters because demand is high and the travel dates are fixed, meaning some victims do not discover the issue until they try to check in. Prices that are far cheaper than competitors should set alarm bells ringing.

Fraudsters also focus on sports and religious trips, where demand is intense and tickets are limited. Scammers exploit urgency and “last few spaces” pressure to push people into paying before they have had time to check the details. Timeshares and holiday clubs can be particularly costly, with victims often losing thousands of pounds through so-called membership fees, deposits or contracts that offer little or no real value.

There are several sensible steps you can take to protect yourself. First, stay safe online: check the web address carefully.

Criminals often make small changes that are easy to miss, such as swapping “.co.uk” for “.org”, or altering a letter or two in the domain name. Next, do your homework. Don’t rely on one review or a single star rating—look across multiple sources and see whether others have raised concerns. Be wary of firms that only use personal email addresses (such as Gmail or Hotmail) and avoid businesses with no clear trading information.

Look for recognised accreditation. If you are booking a flight-inclusive package, check that any ATOL claim is genuine by verifying the ATOL number on the Civil Aviation Authority website. When it comes to payment, choose secure methods: avoid bank transfers to private individuals, and consider using a credit card for additional protection.

Finally, scrutinise the paperwork. A legitimate company should provide proper receipts, invoices and clear terms and conditions. They should also be contactable—by phone at the very least. If it is difficult to reach someone, or contact details are vague or missing, treat it as a serious warning sign. Above all, trust your judgement: if an offer feels too good to be true, it usually is. Staying alert and taking a few checks can significantly reduce the risk of fraud and help ensure your holiday remains something to look forward to.

How do you know when your child is sick?

It is worrying when your child is ill and it can often be difficult to know when to seek medical advice. This article explains how to manage common problems and how to recognise when your child is really unwell.

Temperature A temperature is part of the body’s normal immune response to infection and helps the body fight infection. If your child has a temperature, take off their outer clothing to allow them to cool down. You can give paracetamol or ibuprofen if your child seems bothered by the temperature but you do not need to treat it.

Rarely, young children have a fit when they have a temperature. Treating a temperature won’t stop this. Although this can be scary, it is usually not serious. Make sure they can’t injure themselves on anything, roll them onto their side in the recovery position and call for an ambulance.

Coughs and colds Children will get 8 or more coughs and colds a year and these can last for 2-3 weeks. Antibiotics are often not needed.

Children often get a noisy or rattly chest with a cold, but this does not mean they have a chest infection. Children with a chest infection will often be more unwell. If your child has difficulties breathing, seek urgent medical attention.

Sore throat Most sore throats will get better on their own after 3 days without treatment, but some can last longer. Many children have big tonsils, which can look red when they have a throat infection. Most throat infections are caused by viruses and do not need antibiotics. If your child has a sore throat and temperature without a cough, you can use Pharmacy First to see if antibiotics are needed. Giving paracetamol or ibuprofen can help ease symptoms.

Ear ache Ear infections are often caused by viruses and don’t need antibiotics. Some children complain of ear ache when they have a sore throat. Give paracetamol or ibuprofen to settle the pain. The symptoms usually get better in less than one week. Again Pharmacy First can help.

Rashes Lots of childhood illnesses are accompanied with rashes. You do not need to speak to your surgery if they have a rash unless they are unwell or you are concerned. Please be aware of the rash associated with meningococcal septicaemia, which doesn’t disappear under pressure (the glass test). If your child develops a rash like this, they need urgent medical attention.

General advice on caring for your ill child Most children will get better on their own, given time. You can help your child by making sure they drink plenty, eat healthy food and get some rest when they feel unwell. Paracetamol or ibuprofen can be used, if needed, to treat pain or a temperature. They work differently and can be used together if one doesn’t work.

When to seek further help Signs that your child may have a serious illness and needs urgent medical advice include: • If they are drowsy and irritable.

• Problems breathing: breathing rapidly, working hard to breathe.

• Cold or discoloured hands and feet.

• Having a fit.

• Unusual skin colour (pale, blue or dusky around the lips).

• Temperature of more than 39oC in a child aged 3-6 months (more than 38oC if under 3 months).

• A baby that is feeding significantly less than usual or any child that seems dehydrated (dry mouth, sunken eyes, no tears, peeing less).

• Symptoms related to meningitis - Unusually severe headache - Stiff neck (difficulty putting their chin to their chest) - Dislike of bright lights - Rash that does not disappear with pressure ‘the glass/tumbler test’ Parents know their child and we always listen to your concerns. In most cases, we can reassure you that they will get better on their own. If you are worried it could be serious but you aren’t sure, you can go online to 111.nhs.uk or call 111 for advice.

A survey conducted by Home Instead found that 88% of family caregivers neglect their own health, with many reaching a breaking point. Home Instead identifies that open communication and sharing responsibilities with other family members can help alleviate stress, as sibling teamwork helps to share the care.

Organising care with siblings means being part of a team. Here are five tips for siblings to effectively share caregiving duties: 1 Talk and Listen: Establish regular communication about your parents’ care wishes long before they become urgent. This helps ensure everyone is aligned.

2. Research Options Together: Involve all siblings in exploring care options. This collaborative approach prevents any one person from dominating the decision-making process.

3. Plan Ahead and Stay Flexible: Care needs change over time, so it’s vital to plan for the future while remaining adaptable.

Consider a mix of family and professional care and divide responsibilities based on each sibling’s strengths and availability.

4. Be Honest About Your Limits: If you’re feeling overwhelmed as the primary caregiver, communicate your limits and ask for specific help from your siblings.

5. Keep an Eye on Stress: Caring for ageing parents can be exhausting. Regularly check in on the sibling managing most of the caregiving and offer support to prevent burnout.

Care shouldn’t have a negative perception. It doesn’t mean somebody’s independence is slipping away; in fact, care prolongs their freedom and ability to enjoy life’s pleasures.

Time waits for no one, so get talking about care options with your older loved ones today and it will be a much smoother process if or when the time comes when you need it.

Momentum is growing on National Highways’ Lower Thames Crossing, with the process of buying one of the world’s largest tunneling machines now under way – just days after funding for the scheme was announced in the budget.

It comes after the Chancellor of the Exchequer last week committed £891m of investment into the road connecting Kent and Essex.

The Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP described the scheme as an example of infrastructure “that is the backbone of economic growth across our country”.

The financial support from the Government means work can start next year and enable the project to harness billions of pounds of private sector investment to deliver the remainder of the construction.

Following last week’s announcement, the scheme’s tunneling partner Bouygues Travaux Publics Murphy Joint Venture is now inviting tenders from prospective suppliers who could build the tunnel boring machine.

Delivered by National Highways, the Lower Thames Crossing will be the first major infrastructure project to be carbon neutral in construction.

It is taking a low-carbon approach that only requires one machine to dig both the north and southbound tunnels, which also keeps costs down while not adding additional time to construction.

The 16.4 metres wide tunnel boring machine will excavate one of the widest tunnels in the world, allowing three lanes of traffic in each direction and doubling road capacity across the Thames east of London. More than 4 kilometres in length, it will be the longest road tunnel in the UK. The machine is expected to be purchased next year before digging begins in 2028. Next summer, work on the northern tunnel entrance where the tunnel machine will begin its journey will get under way.

The 110 metre long, 26 metre deep structure will be built within a new worksite that will include the temporary factory that will produce the concrete segments needed to line the tunnel. The structure will eventually be hidden underneath a new landscaped park overlooking the Thames near Tilbury docks, called Tilbury Fields.

Roads and Buses Minister Simon Lightwood said: “The launch of the procurement process for one of Europe’s largest tunnelling machines marks a major step forward for this transformational project, backed by £891 million in the Budget which demonstrates this Government’s determination to deliver the infrastructure our economy needs to grow.

“By unlocking vital capacity across the Thames, the Lower Thames Crossing will relieve congestion at Dartford and create better connections between our ports, manufacturing centres and communities, but also be a key driver of jobs, growth and opportunity.”

Matt Palmer, Executive Director of the Lower Thames Crossing said: “The search for our giant tunnel boring machine is now on, putting us on track to open the Lower Thames Crossing in the early 2030s. We’re a step closer to delivering this vital piece of infrastructure, that will improve the journeys for millions and drive growth by creating jobs and new opportunities for business and trade.”

The project has already started preparatory work along the route of the new road, including ecological and archaeological surveys, utility diversions, and creation of new habitats for local wildlife.

The Lower Thames Crossing will be Britain’s greenest road.

Two new public parks will be created by using material excavated from the tunnel, keeping over 470,000 lorries off local roads and saving millions of tonnes of carbon.

The project will leave behind six times more green space than road, with almost 40 miles of new or improved pathways for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. A new community woodland, Hole Farm, near Brentwood, Essex will open next year, along with a new wetland for migratory birds on the banks of the Thames.

In total, around 80% of the scheme will be underground or behind a cutting or embankment, minimising visual and noise impact for local people, and protecting habitats for wildlife.

The project will tackle congestion at Dartford and drive growth by creating a new connection between the ports of the southeast, the Midlands and the north. The project received planning permission in March 2025.

The new road is expected to open in the early 2030s.

In this month’s article we’ll look at two new small electric cars coming to the UK soon and an EV tax announced by the Government at the end of November.

2027 Renault Twingo - The 2027 Renault Twingo returns as a fully electric city car, blending retro charm with modern tech. Built on Renault’s AmpR Small platform, it features a lightweight design, front-wheel drive, and a 60–95 hp motor for agile urban performance. Powered by a cost-efficient LFP battery (27–35 kWh), it offers up to 163–190 miles of range and fast charging (10–80% in ~25 minutes). Practicality shines with five doors, sliding rear seats, and 360 L of boot space. Tech highlights include Google-integrated infotainment, advanced driver aids, and bidirectional charging. Prices start under £20,000 when released in 2027, making it an affordable, stylish EV for city living.

Honda Super-N - The 2026 Honda Super-N is a compact electric hatchback designed as the spiritual successor to the Honda e. Built on Honda’s lightest N Series platform, it combines city-friendly proportions with a sporty, wide stance, blistered bumpers, and aero ducts. Inside, it features blue-accented seats, a clean horizontal dashboard, and physical controls for simplicity.

A standout feature is BOOST Mode, which temporarily increases power and simulates gear shifts with Active Sound Control for an engaging drive. Expected range is around 168 miles, with vehicle-to-load capability.

Launching in Japan and the UK in 2026, pricing is anticipated below £30,000.

EV Pay-per-mile tax – The UK government has announced a 3p-per-mile tax on electric vehicles in the Autumn Budget on 26 November 2025, with implementation planned for April 2028. Dubbed “VED+”, the levy will apply on top of the existing £195 annual Vehicle Excise Duty and could cost typical EV drivers £250–£300 per year. Plug-in hybrids will pay a reduced rate, while electric vans are exempt. Drivers will estimate annual mileage and pay upfront, with adjustments later; no tracking devices are planned. The measure aims to offset falling fuel duty revenues but has drawn criticism for potentially slowing EV adoption and penalizing rural drivers.

Caring for your mental health over the darker months

By Louise Garner, MBACP Integrative Counsellor Summer feels like a distant memory, Autumn is over ad we are now into Winter. Many of us notice a shift in our mood and energy as the days become shorter, the evenings darker, and the colder weather encourages more time indoors.

While these seasonal changes can feel cozy, they can also affect our mental health. For some, the reduced daylight brings lower motivation, fatigue, or even symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Here are some practical steps we can take to support our wellbeing during this time of year.

Even as daylight hours decrease, it’s so important to get outdoors. Exposure to natural light helps regulate our body’s internal clock and boosts serotonin, a hormone linked to mood. A daily walk—even on cloudy days—can lift energy levels and provide a sense of calm. Consider starting your day with a brisk walk or maybe get some of those winter garden jobs done. If you can’t get out of the house, sit by a window with natural light so you can still gain the benefits.

It's important to keep to a good routine. As daylight fades earlier, it’s easy to slip into irregular habits, whether that means going to bed later, skipping exercise, or spending more time on screens. Good sleep habits, eating well, keeping moving as well as enjoying the coziness of winter and resting. A few minutes of gentle stretching, planning the day ahead can start you off on the right foot.

It can feel tempting to retreat and spend more time alone during the darker months of the year and sometimes it’s what we need, but loneliness and isolation can have a negative effect on our mental health. Be sure to keep in touch, meet a friend for coffee, join a class, or make a point of calling family and friends over the phone regularly. Conversation is a great way of keeping our brains active, through listening, thinking and responding.

We really are what we eat and it’s so tempting to reach for comfort foods in this weather. Aim for a balanced diet that includes fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains alongside the odd mince pie and hot chocolate. Staying hydrated and limiting excess caffeine or alcohol can also stabilize mood and energy.

Our internal body clocks can become a bit confused once the clocks change, so it’s important to open the curtains first thing in the morning and let that natural light in. Use soft lighting in the evenings as you start to wind down for the day.

Remember that it’s okay to ask for help. If you find that your mood consistently feels low, your motivation is slipping, feeling overwhelmed, reaching out to a healthcare professional is an important step. Mental health deserves the same care and attention as physical health.

Young Dartford writer wins award Dartford has another reason to celebrate as Syeda Abeeha Hussaini, a Year 5 pupil from Temple Hill Primary Academy, has been named one of only five national winners in the Young Writers Monster Mini Tales competition. The contest saw an incredible 15,300 students from across the country take part, making her achievement both rare and remarkable.

Abeeha, taught by her class teacher Mr Byrne, impressed judges with her creativity, imagination, and flair for storytelling — qualities that have earned her well-deserved recognition on the national stage.

Community Comes Together at The Oddfellows for Homeless Charity “Big Peeling Day”

The Oddfellows pub, owned by Jemma and Paul, recently opened its doors for a heart-warming community event. On Wednesday, 11th December, the pub hosted a Homeless Charity Big Peeling Day, bringing locals together to prepare homemade soup for those in need.

Volunteers of all ages joined in peeling and chopping fresh vegetables, creating generous batches of hearty soup.

These meals were later distributed to homeless individuals on Sunday, 14th December, offering warmth, nourishment, and kindness during a cold winter weekend.

The Oddfellows received vegetable donations from residents, allotment holders, and local businesses. Carrots, potatoes, onions, leeks, and parsnips all went straight into the charity soup pots, helping ensure the event’s success and demonstrating the community’s generous spirit.

Adding to the effort, Alan arranged for clothing donations to be delivered to the pub. Thanks to his organisation, warm coats, hats, gloves, and other essential winter garments were collected and passed on to support homeless individuals facing freezing temperatures. His actions helped inspire others and highlighted how one person’s initiative can make a meaningful impact.

Jemma, Paul, Alan and bar staff expressed their sincere gratitude to everyone who donated, peeled, chopped, or helped spread the word. They shared how proud they were to see their pub become a hub of kindness and community support.

Donations: Fresh vegetables and warm clothing were gratefully received in the week leading up to the event.

A heartfelt thank-you goes out to all who took part—your generosity made a truly positive difference.
