NEW PLAY AREA FOR DARENTH COUNTRY PARK AS £1.5MILLION PLAY SPACE REGENERATION CONTINUES

Work is stepping up pace in a borough-wide programme of regeneration for Dartford’s play spaces.

Work to improve the play area at Darenth Country Park is complete, with new equipment including climbing frames, slides and sensory play officially unveiled on Wednesday, November 9th by Leader of the Council Jeremy Kite MBE and Lead Members for Parks and Open Spaces Cllr Patsy Thurlow and Cllr Drew Swinerd. Dartford Borough Council has committed to spend £1.5million updating play spaces to ensure that play is fully accessible for all children. The improvements at Darenth Country Park follow refurbishments at Queens Garden and the installation of a new playground on the Bridge Estate.

Work is already underway at Jessamine Place, while further improvements are expected at Worcester Park and Hesketh Park over the coming months.

Central Park is to undergo a huge regeneration to create Buccaneer Bay, a unique destination for families to visit.

Leader of Dartford Borough Council Jeremy Kite said: “Dartford is bucking the trend and continues to invest in play spaces and outdoor gym equipment.

“This is an investment in our local communities. It’s great to see the changes at Darenth Country Park and I’m very excited to reveal even more changes over the coming months.”

COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING DAY AT DSTC

Healthy Living Centre Dartford is working in partnership with Dartford Science and Technology College to create a food forest on the school site in Heath Lane. A food forest contains fruit and nut trees that grow in harmony with other edible shrubs and plants. This will offer unique educational opportunities for the students of DSTC, and provide a green, peaceful place for the local community to come together for seasonal events and workshops.

We’d love you to join us in creating this exciting new venture. Bring your family and friends on Sunday 8th January from 12:30 – 15:30. As well as planting fruit trees, there will be arts and crafts and other activities to keep you occupied, together with a delicious warming chilli for lunch!

DING-DONG MERRILY ON THE HIGH STREET! WALK THROUGH DARTFORD’S CHRISTMAS HISTORY

Many of us will be heading into Dartford this December as part of our festive preparations. It might be for a spot of Christmas shopping, to enjoy panto at the Orchard Theatre or even to visit Santa himself at Acacia Hall. We won’t be the first; Dartford has always been at the heart of things in the run-up to Christmas – so let’s follow in the footsteps of local residents past and walk through its yuletide history…

Dartford town centre has supplied local residents’ Christmas shopping for centuries. Its market originally showcased produce from surrounding farms and Dartford has been officially recorded as a market town since the medieval period. As with local industries, the high street saw increased development during the 19th century, when sellers gained access to imported goods. Local blog www. suttonathonehistory.co.uk contains a fascinating archive of the High Street’s seasonal offerings

for the year 1912 – do have a look if you can. In it, Turners Supply Stores boasts a fine selection of Christmas pudding ingredients, meat and cheese, while the off licence C.C. Berrall boldly advertises the finest blends of whisky, beers and spirits in local newspaper the Dartford Express.

Christmas Toy Quiz:

Phillips Toy Shop had an array of goodies in its 1912 Christmas advert. But which of the following did they NOT sell? a) Magic lanterns b) Mechanical novelties c) Nintendo Switch

Today, the Orchard Theatre is famed for its pantomimes but did you know Crayford was once a panto hotspot too? In 1916, The Princess Theatre was built as part of the Vickers factory estate for the benefit of its munitions workers during the First World War. In later years the theatre was primarily a cinema, but its early Christmas shows were hugely popular amongst the Vickers staff.

Theatre Season Quiz: Why was The Princess Theatre opened twice? a) The original building was burnt down b) The original building was flooded c) The original building collapsed

Also closely linked with Dartford’s First World War history was the Joyce Green airfield. In 1911, Vickers established the airfield on farmland, building hangars and workshops for aircraft testing. On Christmas Day in 1914, it first saw active service when a gunbus was sent up from the airfield in pursuit of a German plane.

The Second World War created another legacy for Dartford – did you know the famous Trafalgar Square Christmas tree has a temporary home in the borough? Since 1947, the Norwegian government has gifted a spruce tree – known as ‘Queen of the Forest’ – to the British people in

14
www.dartfordliving.com

memory of our alliance during the war. Dartford based warehouse / installation company Beck and Pollitzer store the tree overnight before transporting it to Trafalgar Square! Bringing Dartford’s Christmas story up to date, why not visit Santa’s House at Acacia Hall this year? It may be a new attraction but this historic building dates back to the 13th century, when it was originally used as a cornmill. Restored over the centuries, the Grade Two listed building became part of the GlaxoSmithKline development and is now an exciting new events venue. It’s also supposed to be haunted – maybe even by a few ghosts of Dartford’s past..?

222 QI ANSWERS TO YOUR QUITE INGENIOUS QUESTIONS

A special quiz put together for Dartford Living

1 The word ‘Kent’ comes from the old Celtic word Cantus, meaning what?

a) Rim or edge b) Walled town c) Centre d) Sing or chant

(a) The word ‘Kent’ comes from the proto-Celtic word cantus meaning rim, edge or corner. The word also has links to the Dutch kant (meaning ‘side or edge’), while in Latin the region was known as Cantia or Cantium. In Old English it was named Cent - all words referencing the county’s place on the corner of Britain, along the coast.

2 The first speeding ticket was given in 1896. How fast was the driver going?

a) 4 mph b) 8 mph c) 12 mph d) 16 mph

(b) In 1896, Walter Arnold was the first Briton to be fined for speeding. He was doing 8mph in Paddock Wood, Kent, at 4 times the speed limit (2mph). He was chased down by a policeman on a bicycle and fined 1 shilling at Tonbridge Assize Court. It was the world’s first speeding ticket.

3 Aphra Behn, one of the first British female novelists, was born in 1640 in Wye, Kent. What did she do before taking up writing?

a) She was a nun b) She modelled for painters c) She acted on the stage d) She was a spy for the government

(d) Aphra Behn once said she was “designed for a nun”, but rather than joining a religious order she was employed by Charles II and his government to spy on the Dutch in the 1660s. She reported on the movement of English exiles and

worked to convince anti-monarchists into becoming double agents. However, the crown was slow to pay her, and she eventually quit to take up writing. Although she never acted on the stage herself, her plays were popular and The Rover was a favourite at court.

a) Vials of his blood

Painted wood carvings of his face

His hair and fingernails

Chips of the stone slab he died on

(a) After Thomas Becket’s assassination in 1170, the monks at Canterbury Cathedral saved some of his blood and used to it heal people. It was in incredibly high demand and there wasn’t a huge amount to go around, so they diluted a few drops into a massive vat of water to distribute to as many pilgrims as possible.

Orlando

(c) Born in Dartford in 1943, Mick Jagger was a huge J.R.R.Tolk ien fan, and on hearing about the plans for the animated film called up director Ralph Bakshi about voicing the lead. While Bakshi was interested, the film’s producers wanted classically trained British actors to do the voices - not a world-famous rock star. Orlando Bloom would later rise to fame by playing the elf Legolas, but he was just one year old when the anima tion came out.

4 What did the monks at Canterbury Cathedral give to pilgrims after Thomas Becket died?
b)
c)
d)
5 Which of the following wanted to voice Frodo in the 1978 animation of Lord of the Rings? a) Len Goodman b) Pip Torrens
c)
Mick Jagger d)
Bloom
6 Copies of the Kent Messenger from the 1930s were turned into papier-mâché and found holding together what iconic museum piece? a) The mummy at the Maidstone Museum

b) Tippoo’s Tiger at the Victoria and Albert Museum

c) The Roman mosaics at the Canterbury Roman Museum d) The blue whale skeleton at the Natural History Museum

(d) In the 1930s the blue whale skeleton at the Natural History Museum in London was held together by copies which had been turned into papier-mâché and fitted between the bones. Issues of the Christmas edition from 1932 were found support ing the intervertebral discs.

7 In 1875, Matthew Webb became the first person to swim the English Channel. As he reached the coast, he was greeted by what?

a) A swimmer going the other way b) People singing Rule Britannia to cheer him on c) A beach full of jellyfish d) Doctors waiting with medicinal laudanum

(b) As Matthew Webb approached the coastline he was met by the British mail boat The Maid of Kent. Webb later wrote in his diaries that he would never forget ‘when the men in the mail boat struck up the tune of Rule Britannia. They sang, or rather shouted, in a hoarse roar.’ Although there were no jelly fish waiting on the beach, he was stung while swimming - and given some medicinal brandy to manage the pain.

a) Frederick Douglass b) Anne Boleyn c) John Keats d) Pocahontas

(d) Pocahontas was buried in St George’s Church, Gravesend, in 1617, after becoming seriously ill at the start of a voyage back to Virginia. The exact location of her grave isn’t certain, as the church was destroyed by a fire in 1727.

(b) Spitfires in the Second World War were often crowdfund ed - raise a certain amount and you’d get to name the plane. Methods for raising money were inventive; one farmer in Kent charged people sixpence to see ‘the only field in Kent without a German aircraft in it’. Over in Wiltshire an outline of a Spitfire was drawn in the market square, and people were asked to fill it with coins.

a) Crabs b) Syphilis c) Scorpions d) Bubonic plague

(c) Sheerness is home to Britain’s largest scorpion colony. 250 years ago, yellow-tailed scorpions came to Sheerness in the Isle of Sheppey via Italian merchant ships. While they used to be the only colony, now several thousand have migrated towards London, while roughly 10,000 continue to live in the dockyard walls. The Sheerness scorpions might occasionally sting the odd person, but they mostly live on a diet of woodlice and spiders.

11 What caused a 2-mile traffic jam at the en trance of Dartford Tunnel in 1991?

a) The cricket commentary made people laugh too much to drive b) A lorry full of strawberries spilled all its cargo c) Giant, inflatable Christmas decorations floated onto the road d) A stampede of cows caused people to flee their cars

(a) In 1991 Jonathan Agnew’s cricket commentary led to a 2-mile traffic jam at the entrance of Dartford Tunnel because it was so hysterical. In a description about Ian Botham, Agnew said he 'couldn't quite get his leg over', which allegedly caused thousands of listeners to pull over and stop because they found it so funny. One man was unable to pay the toll for laughing, and it turned into a jam.

LIFE UNDER THE STAIRS

LIVING THE DREAM

It’s been several months since I last wrote as Real Life took over, and I stepped away from Dartford Living. Now I’m back with my view from Life Under The Stairs. In August, we left Stevenson Towers for good and decamped to a small island known for its quiet pace of life and mostly temperate climate. It’s not quite Maui but we love it anyway.

We live near the Needles on the Isle of Wight, a few minutes away from a quiet beach, and all other amenities.

During our thirty years in Dartford, we watched as it went through the enormous changes due to land grabbing and development. We saw the amount of housing involved, and worried about the lack of infrastructure for those already living in the town.

However, it is going in the right direction, although at the expense of the older generation. As it did in the 1970s, Dartford is reinventing itself. Given a few years it will once again be a vibrant place to live and enjoy. It will be a town

for young people, either single or with families. The easy travel links to London and Europe, a lively shopping and entertainment area at Bluewater seem primarily aimed at those under thirty. Change is good.

However, being older, we felt a little left out; an afterthought for the council and entrepreneurs; not seen as big spenders or users of the café society Dartford is rapidly moving towards.

It was time to go. We decided to buy a holiday home, before the realisation that it simply wasn’t worth paying two lots of bills and the rather high ferry costs for a few weeks away each year. Eldest Offspring sealed the deal. ‘You’re always there. Why don’t you just move over for good’ was her comment when we mentioned our plans to family. It made sense the more we thought about it, although moving two decrepit adults, thirty years’ worth of ‘stuff’ plus three elderly cats isn’t everyone’s idea of fun, we are here and loving it.

There are subtle differences about island living, which wouldn’t suit all. We have most of the bigname shops on the island. However, deliveries

26 www.dartfordliving.com

take longer as everything must be shipped over from the mainland, be it furniture, clothing or white goods.

Anything requiring an electrician, plumber, builder etc can result in a wait of several weeks. Most are booked up months in advance. There are no NHS dentists, and all veterinary surgeries have closed lists. Surely this is a major opportunity for some enterprising young people to get over here and offer these services.

There are no motorways and only a small stretch of dual carriageway. A far cry from the M25/A2 junction where we lived before.

On a personal note, I have foregone any theatre trips – the bigger shows and plays simply don’t come here. However, Portsmouth and Southampton are only a short ferry trip away, and being a resident, we now qualify for reduced travel costs.

Despite the holiday season being over, and the crowds reduced to a mere trickle there is a frisson among those who live here that the

quieter months are ‘our’ time .Shops and cafes are readied for Christmas and I’m told the competition for the best decorated home is fierce. There is still life around the marinas and bigger towns, although many attractions close for the winter.

It is a great place for artists of all types. There is a literary festival in October, a county show and several art groups which run all year round. Local crafts flourish, from glasswork, pottery through to driftwood carving. Many will know about the annual music festival, Cowes Week, the round the island yacht race. The excellent beaches are home to surfers and swimmers. The countryside is perfect for walking, cycling or horse-riding.

Time will tell if we made the right move. I think we did. Stevenson Towers is now home to a young family with school age children, as it should be. As for us, in the family tradition of naming our home, Life Under The Stairs now comes from the Stevenson Beach Retreat. Aloha

WALKING WITH THE DARTS

13 games. Unfortunately, the unbeaten record of twelve games came to a shuddering halt last weekend (Saturday 12th November) after a 3-1 defeat at the hands of an excellently organised Farnborough side.

The excellent recent form of the team saw Alan Dowson collect the recent Vanarama National League South Manager of The Month Award, which is well deserved to say the least! So, congratulations and thank you to him and his coaching staff for all the hard work they do in order to bring us success on the pitch. The team has climbed up to second place in the league table and continues to battle it out with Ebbsfleet United and Havant & Waterlooville for top spot.

Hello again, welcome to another edition of Walking With The Darts, a monthly update on all things related to Dartford FC, courtesy of Dartford Living Magazine.

I’d like to take this opportunity to sincerely apologise for the lack of an article last month. Personal circumstances got in the way, and I was unable to write my piece in time for it to go to printing, so I apologise for that.

The schedule has been extremely hectic for all involved with Dartford FC recently, as the games come thick and fast for both the men’s First Team and Dartford FC Women.

With the First Team being on the receiving end of a shock early exit in the FA Cup Qualifying Rounds at the hands of an excellent Beckenham Town team back in September, Alan Dowson has taken advantage of the free dates by altering league fixtures in order to get them played earlier than expected. This has seen the Darts go on an incredible run of results of eleven wins, one draw, and a defeat in all competitions in the last

By the time you read this, Tom Bonner and Co will surely have bounced back from the recent defeat with a strong performance on the road again, as we travel to Swindon Supermarine in the Second Round of The Isuzu FA Trophy. That fixture will then be followed by further trips on the road to Oxford City and Ebbsfleet United, as November sees the team rack up a few miles. The latter game will see the Darts begin their defence of the Kent Senior Cup against our local rivals in what should be a feisty game!

As far as the squad is concerned, goalkeeper Dan Wilks has recovered from the ankle injury he picked up at Taunton Town earlier in the season. However, with Wolves loanee Joe Young performing so well, Dan has joined Hayes & Yeading United on loan in order to get minutes on the pitch. Striker Dan Roberts has also gone back out on loan, having signed for National League South strugglers Hungerford Town. Midfielder Jack Smith’s loan from Stevenage Town has been extended, while fellow midfield man Joshua Johnson has proved to be effective since his arrival on loan

from Oxford United.

Meanwhile, Connor Dymond and his Dartford FC Women’s side continue to impress and make history of their own. Last weekend (Sunday 13th November) saw the ladies take part in their first ever Vitality Women’s FA Cup (proper) First Round. The game took place in front of 233 supporters on the Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park main pitch against Ascot United Women, where they dominated for a majority of the 120 minutes. Two superb free-kicks from Georgie Davis and Shauni Griffiths ensured that the game remained locked at 2-2, before they endured the extra time and then a penalty shootout. That was locked at 5-5 and, as we nervously watched the sudden death knockout spot-kicks, goalkeeper Jade Charlton (who only delivered her second baby in August!) saved the decisive kick to see the Darts through with an 8-7 success. The historical moment was fantastic to witness, and they now host Hashtag United FC Women in the 2nd round.

By the time you have read this, the ladies would have also faced Ashford United Ladies FC in the

Quarter Final of the Kent Cup, as well as continued their league campaign which has been disrupted a little due to the successful cup runs. The team currently occupies fifth place in The London & South-East Regional Women’s Premier Division, having won four of their opening eight games.

So, a huge congratulations to Connor and his team for making history! Let’s hope that the good form continues and they achieve well-deserved success this season.

Finally in other, more disturbing news, the club has been forced to update its policy concerning 13-17-year-old supporters. With reports of disturbances and other anti-social behaviour at games, the club has had to make important changes to protect everyone at games, including the players and match officials. Please check out the official Dartford FC website for more information and how these policy updates might affect you.

As always, thank you for your continued support and thanks for reading.

BUYING A PRESENT FOR AN ELDERLY FRIEND, NEIGHBOUR OR RELATIVE

If you’re like me, your mind may go blank when it comes to buying gifts for loved ones! As Christmas is almost upon us I thought you may like a few suggestions for presents for an elderly friend, neighbour or relative…..

Time. Enjoying time with others is core to our emotional needs, especially after having to stay apart for so long these past 20+ months. Good company is always welcome, and it shows you want to spend time with them too! Giving them an event or trip to look forward to (in say February) can really help lift the winter blues. And the fun doesn’t stop with the trip itself – they create great memories that can be recounted to others or relived in quiet moments.

Yum Yum. Everyone loves a varied and exciting food parcel! Customised hampers from a deli, or perhaps a homemade cake really show you’ve thought about your loved one. If they don’t have a sweet tooth, try a selection of their favourite teas, or perhaps some foods that will bring back memories, for example from where they used to live or visit. …. Of course, with foods we do need to give a thought to any changing preferences or allergies they may now be managing.

Clothing. Many senior folk really feel the cold, and may be worried about energy costs, so a new and jolly piece of clothing, that makes them feel snug, will be most welcome. How about warm socks, fingerless mitts, soft scarves, slippers (new ones may prevent a fall), fleece pyjamas, or new dressing gowns….

Music. Music is the language of the soul! It can lift moods and bring back many happy memories. We can of course browse and buy online for their favourite pieces or artist. Do think about the equipment your loved one is familiar with… MP3 or CD or Tapes even! Don’t forget to buy some headphones so the neighbours aren’t disturbed . Audio Books or Video. Great for those cold winter evenings and ideal for someone who now finds it hard to get out…… There are loads to choose from – different eras, box-set series, life histories, explorer’s tales, political memoirs, old comedies (e.g. Flanders & Swan or The Goons), and of course romance or general fiction. Videos are also welcome – try and find out their favourite or meaningful film or a perhaps seek a box set

from the distant past that they’ll enjoy.

Hobby gifts. Crafts and other hobbies really help with mental stimulation, dexterity and of course mood. Everyone loves to show off their latest creation….. So why not seek a painting or sewing set, or perhaps a colouring book (therapeutic & fun), or weaving set, or puzzle set.

Pamper gifts . Soaps, perfumes, manicure, massage…. Perhaps subscription to a weekly or monthly magazine – they’ll feel pampered each time it arrives!

Practical Gifts. Smoke alarms, torches, hot water bottles, new electric blanket, kettle or iron (this will help with home safety too – it’s amazingly easy for a worn out item to be overlooked), or perhaps an easy to use radio, with a large day & date display….. How about something for outside?.... Boot removers, new walking stick, litter-picker-handle (which is great around the house too), and for someone who likes to walk how about a fluorescent jacket, and perhaps a GPS tracker if they wander too far.

Finally, why not ‘Be a Santa’ this Christmas by delivering a present to an elderly neighbour on Christmas Eve, and label it from Santa….. or even better, invite them to your home for Christmas Day – that‘s the best gift for a live-alone person! Hope this helps…. I best get to the shops now …. ! Brought to you by Christina Uppenkamp of Home Instead Dartford – specialising in bringing joy to the elderly through practical support and fun in their homes and nearby.

In this month’s article we look at the growing range of electric models and changes proposed road tax for electric cars.

2023 Audi Q8 e-tron electric SUV – this is the refreshed model to the original E-tron in 2018 which offers revised air suspension for a better ride. There is also more offer in the range –going up from 197 miles to 305 miles. The entry level version will produce a combined 335 bhp from dual electric motors and draw energy from an 89kWh (usable capacity) battery. The sporty version will have a third electric motor and more power to reach nearly 500 bhp. The interior has as many gadgets including a giant panoramic glass roof and four-zone climate control. The infotainment and climate controls are handled by two touchscreens, with the former measuring 10.1in and the latter 8.6in. Among the Q8 e-tron’s suite of driver assistance technology is a new self-parking system. It will come on sale in Spring 2023 with the price starting from £68,595.

2023 Volvo EX90 electric SUV – this is the replacement to the XC90 and will be powered by electric power with no petrol, diesel or even hybrid variants offered. When on sale it will have two electric motors (one on the front axle and the other at the rear to give it four-wheel drive), with these producing a combined 510bhp, matching range-topping rivals. Power for the EX90’s comes from the same 111kWh battery to give it a 373 miles range. You’ll be able to get its battery from 10-80% in less than 30 minutes if you use an ultra-rapid public charger but this will be 11 hours from a home charger wallbox. Its interior will be more modern, with a massive, 15.0in central touchscreen with large icons which are easy to use. It will have seven seats which many other electric vehicles cannot offer. At launch in late 2023 it will be priced starting from £96,255.

Changes proposed to road tax for electric cars

from 2025 - Electric cars will no longer be exempt from vehicle excise duty from April 2025 announced at the budget on 17th November 2022. The chancellor said company car tax rates for electric vehicles will remain lower than for traditionally fuelled vehicles. Rates of VED vary largely according to emissions and the age of the car, with all zero-emission vehicles currently exempt. EVs will be charged the lowest band for new cars in the first year – currently £10 – and will then pay the same rate as other vehicles. Current feedback suggests it will put off buyers of new electric vehicles – but time will tell!

The 2022 Football World Cup is held in Qatar but the build-up has been dominated by concerns about the hosts.

Qatar has been criticised for its stance on same-sex relationships, its human rights record and treatment of migrant workers. Although the concerns are real and need to be addressed, football players are not politicians and cannot be expected do anything meaningful on these matters. Instead, these questions must be addressed when hosting is decided.

So, although the peaceful protests planned by some players, and gestures such as England’s Harry Kane and eight other captains of European teams wearing ‘One Love’ armbands are laudable, they should not be required… as those in authority should have managed the situation and not allowed it to reach this point.

Sporting events in December include:

3: Boxing: Tyson Fury vs. Derek Chisora, WBC world heavyweight championship, London

18: Football - World Cup final, Lusail Stadium, Qatar

26: Football - Premier League season resumes after World Cup

MERRY CHRISTMAS - A QUICK GUIDE TO STAYING HEALTHY OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON

Many of us look forward to Christmas, even if we don’t celebrate its religious significance. It’s often a time when the world slows down just for a day or two and we get time off to relax, whether on our own or with friends and family. Here is a quick guide to staying healthy over the festive season.

‘Tis the season to be jolly Alcohol excess can be a problem for some over Christmas. For most people, drinking within sensible limits is not a problem but often binge drinking is a problem at Christmas. There are a few strategies to help you control your alcohol intake.

• The earlier in the day that you start drinking, the more you will consume. An extra hour will probably mean an extra two or more drinks. If you are going to drink alcohol, consider starting later in the evening.

• Drink water or fizzy drinks in between each alcohol drink. This will slow down the speed at which you drink alcohol and also make you feel full.

• Consider substituting an alcoholic drink with something non-alcoholic. There are lots of alcohol-free alternatives to wine, beer, cider and spirits. Try a cordial with soda water or even tonic with a slice of lime.

• If you are going somewhere where you will be offered a drink have a get out plan to escape early. Alternatively drive and don’t drink.

• Think about how you will feel in the morning and the impact that will have on what you will want to do tomorrow.

Get stuffed (or not)

We often eat too much at this time of year, and the food is often full of fat or sugar, so not the healthiest options. One reason we can over indulge is stress, which causes us to reach out for comfort food. Avoid this by looking to distract yourself with activities including socialising, playing games and exercise. Reduce temptation by not keeping comfort food at hand – if it’s not there it requires more effort to get it, whereas what we are looking for is a quick emotional sugary hit. Drink some water – this will make you feel fuller and may help to reduce cravings. But if you have overindulged, don’t feel guilty, just resolve to go back to healthier eating habits.

Mindful eating is a useful technique. This means being aware of what you are eating, enjoying each mouthful but knowing when you have had enough to eat and stopping. You should eat away from distractions (ie not in front of the TV), slow down the speed of eating and not feel that you have to clear your plate.

Baby it’s cold outside

There is nothing better than spending time outside on a crisp winter’s day – going for a walk or cycle. Being outside in natural light lifts our energy, alertness, cognitive processing and mood. There is scientific evidence that being outside in natural surroundings, such as a park, can improve the brain’s cognitive function. We also burn more calories walking in the cold than we do sitting in the warm, so it is a win-win all around!

Looking after you

Some people find Christmas a very difficult time. They may struggle with mental health issues or may be alone. Or they may have financial worries that causes stress. If you fall in this group, it is important that you prioritise what is important to you and look after yourself. Reach out to others for help, whether they are friends and family, on line support groups or organisations such as the Samaritans (call 116 123) or text SHOUT to 85258 – both offer 24/7 support.

Getting help over the bank holiday weekends

Although many GP surgeries will be closed over the

40 www.dartfordliving.com

Christmas and New Year bank holiday weekends, there are lots you can do to look after your own health and to seek help when needed.

• Make sure you have requested your repeat medication in plenty of time so that you don’t run out

• Ensure you have a stock of remedies to treat aches and pains, minor ailments, indigestion and so on

• You can get advice on 111.nhs.uk or by calling 111 24/7

• Community pharmacists may be open and can offer advice on self-help

• Urgent treatment centres may have different opening hours to usual – the local ones to Dartford are at Erith, Queen Marys and Gravesham

• Only attend A&E if it is a life-threatening emergency or serious injury

I wish you all the health and happiness over the festive season.

Comedy’s no laughing matter... “misleads”, “straight reverses”, “telegraphing”, “the rule of three” “the law of C”, “jumping the shark”…. these are the rules of comedy. You can’t just learn them. You have to live them.

Five strangers gather in the conference room of a shabby hotel on the outskirts of Farnham. Despite character differences there is one thing that links Pam, Gavin, Morgan, Dale and Amy … to realise their dreams through comedy.

Frank Donohue, the finest sitcom writer of his generation has flown in from Los Angeles to conduct a seminar teaching his five lucky disciples the tricks of the trade, and how to write the perfect sitcom. During the class, their everyday lives are exposed revealing mix ups, farcical revelations and gut-wrenching tragedies.

From the writers of Round The Horne… Revisited and BBC TV’s My Family. The term “jumping the shark” comes from which TV series starring the character “Fonzie”?

CHRISTMAS PUDDING

It’s not too late to bake your own Christ mas pudding this year. As always, it’s a recipe you can adapt to your own per sonal tastes.

You will need:

600g mixed fruit – made up of a 500g bag of mixed dried fruit plus your choice of additional flavours – how about dried cranberried, grated apple, candied peel, glace cherries

100ml liquid – this can be alcoholic, such as brandy/rum/sherry/fruit liqueur/cider, or non-alcoholic such as fruit juice

100g butter

100g dark brown sugar

150g Self Raising Flour

2 Large eggs

1tsp mixed spice

½ tsp cinnamon

What to do:

Soak the fruit selection in your chosen liquid for a few hours (preferably overnight) until the liquid has been absorbed.

Gently heat the sugar and the butter to gether in a saucepan until the sugar has dissolved. Pop aside to cool.

Butter the inside of a 2L pudding bowl and pop a small circle of greaseproof paper in the bottom of the bowl.

Add the sugar/butter mix to the fruit and stir. Add the eggs, flour and spices and mix until combined. Add nuts if using.

Pour the mixture into the pudding bowl and smooth the top.

Cover with a double layer of greaseproof paper, then wrap the whole bowl in foil – place a large square over the top and smooth down the sides, then repeat with a square of foil underneath, wrapping upwards. Secure in place with string tied, tightly around the rim of the bowl. Make a ‘handle’ out of sting to help lower the bowl into the saucepan for cooking.

Fill a large saucepan (big enough to hold the pudding bowl) halfway with water and bring to the boil.

Lower the pudding bowl in carefully and steam/boil for 6 hours – checking the level of water throughout and topping up as needed.

When cooked, remove from the saucepan and allow to cool.

Re-move the wrapping and wrap with fresh foil/film. Store in a cool place, or freeze, until Christmas.

Reheat in the microwave for 3 or 4 minutes until hot and serve with custard or delicious cream. Enjoy!
