DARE WAS THERE

Follow us @daremagcanada to join DARE at events, photoshoots and more!

From the moment that I launched the first issue of DARE, I knew that this was just the beginning—the beginning of something new for myself, the industry and most importantly, curvy women worldwide. From the press sharing the debut issue and identifying the need for diversity in fashion, to the heartfelt emails from women of all ages and sizes filling my inbox, the feedback received within the first week of launching was so inspiring. “Finally, a magazine for me! Thank you for empowering all the fashion-loving plus size ladies,” expressed one reader in an encouraging email. With this, it is now our turn to thank you! Thank you to all of those who have supported DARE, believed in the magazine and of course, thank you to our readers. DARE aims to inspire plus size women, one issue at a time. In doing so, we make it our mission to fill our pages with confident, fashion-forward women. Through pages 15 to 18, the first (and only!) plus size model to win America’s Next Top Model, Whitney Thompson shows us how to work our curves, while we round up the best in fashion and beauty trends from pages 27 to 46. Looking for this season’s staple? Check out our favourite wide-calf boots on page 21 (and we’re giving away a FREE pair to one lucky winner!). From trend reports to autumn essentials, we’ve fallen for fall and are confident that you will too!

THE FIRST PLUS SIZE DESIGNER LINE TO EVER SHOW AT NYFW

Extra, extra! Read on for the latest news in fashion, beauty and curvy culture.

REVLON MEETS RUNWAY

Old Navy is adding to the exciting world of e-commerce by launching its first plus size collection exclusively available online at OldNavy.ca as of August. Unlike the in-store items, each piece being offered online is tailored specifically to flatter a curvy figure, with contoured waistbands and denim with 4-way stretch to ensure a proper fit. Every item on the site—including fall staples like chambray shirts, cord jeggings and embellished sweatshirts—will be available up to size 30. Add the fact that there is free shipping in Canada on orders above $50 and we’re already pulling out our wallets.

The nail art trend is alive and well, as proven by the new collaboration between Revlon and high-end designer Marchesa. The global beauty brand has joined forces with Marchesa to create three separate collections covering nail art and nail enamel as well as lip, eye and beauty tools. The first collection to launch will include eight nail appliqués, made with 3D jewel designs inspired by Marchesa’s runway couture pieces. Each separate design retails for $9 and comes with 18 strips of various nail sizes to ensure a good fit. These nail sets will hit drugstore shelves nation wide this October.

This is a moment that many fashionable and patient Canadians have been waiting for. After hopeful speculation, the rumour about Nordstrom setting up shop in Canada has (finally!) been confirmed. The massive retailer that carries plus size brands such as Adrianna Papell, Calvin Klein and MICHAEL Michael Kors, announced that its first five stores in the country will be situated in Calgary (Fall 2014), Ottawa and Vancouver (Fall 2015), and two in Toronto located in Sherway Gardens and Yorkdale Shopping Centre (Fall 2016). CURVY QUEEN

The original Queen of hip-hop is coming to television this fall. On September 16th, Dana Owens—better known as Queen Latifah—is debuting her own talk show aptly named The Queen Latifah Show on CBS. Known just as much for her rhymes as for her candid opinions on plus size fashion, Latifah seems to be the right fit for an open and honest talk show. The voluptuous Latifah promises celebrity interviews, human-interest stories, musical performances and many laughs along the way. (via USA Today and E! Online)

AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL WINNER WHITNEY THOMPSON TALKS ABOUT LIFE AS A PLUS SIZE MODEL AND WHAT IT TAKES TO BE ON TOP. BY ASH KOWALEWSKI

AG ..C A

D RE 16 M

daremag.ca

RE

–WHITNEY THOMPSON

“I’ve been thinking a lot about what I’ve accomplished up until this point in my life and if I quit tomorrow I would be completely satisfied with what I’ve done.” Modelling work, like so many other contract jobs, isn’t always consistent, but Whitney’s career is still in full swing. While she shows no signs of stopping just yet (booking campaigns in London and Singapore just in the last few months), the 25-year-old does see herself settling down one day, possibly to speak out about self-image and eating disorders, or maybe even to open up her own modelling agency. Her advice for becoming a model is quite simple: “Do your research.” Like anything in life worth doing, you need to have a passion and ambition for what you want to do and confidence in yourself to actually accomplish it. “You have to have good motivation and can’t just be [big] and pretty,” Whitney says without reserve. “You have to have something [driving] you.” Not sure where to start? “Fake it ‘til you make it.” Uncomplicated wisdom from one top model so inherently comfortable in her own skin. And while the world of modelling may not be for everyone, Whitney’s wise-beyond-her-years pointers apply to everyone: “You can do anything you put your mind to if you genuinely want it. Stop talking about it and do it. You can’t wait until your life looks like it’s ready. You have to just do it.”

DA

YOU CAN do ANYTHING YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO.

Modelling isn’t an easy career path; the competition is fierce and the pressure to look good all the time is a hard to keep up, no matter what your size is. Whitney Thompson realized this when she first immersed herself into the modelling world during her teen years, attempting to become a straight-sized model that was later deemed “too curvy”. It wasn’t until America’s Next Top Model (ANTM) producers discovered her while she was in an airport en route for spring break that she made her foray into plus size modelling. She embraced her killer curves and won cycle 10 of ANTM, becoming the TV show’s first (and only!) plus size winner, which jumpstarted a successful career since her win in 2008. Sitting down with Whitney, we immediately figured out the tall blonde (or rather brunette turned blonde) is more candid than you would expect, by reaffirming our suspicions that living in a house with 12 other girls, all vying for the same prize, was less than ideal. But there’s no denying that her experience on Top Model gave her a push in the right direction and put her in contact with industry leaders. After her first main gigs with CoverGirl and a spread in Seventeen Magazine wrapped up, Whitney went on to book other contracts before her make-it-big job with Vogue Italia, which has been one of her career-highlighting moments.

TIPS from the

TOP PLUS INDUSTRY EXPERT LIIS WINDISCHMANN SHARES FIVE TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE IT AS A MODEL.

1. BE RESPONSIBLE: Your career will fall flat if clients are worried that you might miss a booking. If you’re on time for your initial interview, you have already demonstrated your responsibility level. 2. BE GROUNDED: Contrary to what you see on TV, being a diva will not win you any favours. If you are the type of person that brightens the days of others, you will go far in this business.

Modelling is a career that needs maintenance and those willing to update their portfolios regularly make it easier for their agencies to promote them to clients. Agents look for potential models who will do their part.

DUO Boots cap-toe boot, $360, available in October at duoboots.com

ERIN: Your clothing has a very global aesthetic. Tell us about your background and how it has informed your designs. SERWAH: I was born and raised in NYC to Ghanaian (West Africa) parents, so in many ways I had the advantage of living in two cultures simultaneously. I think that this experience of dual identity informs my designs in that my aesthetic is very much a reflection of both my “Ghanaianess” and my “Americaness.”

E: Rue 114 is proof that designing for all sizes can be done well, despite what largers companies seem to think—what got you interested in designing for plus size women? S: I always knew that I wanted to design for both the straight and plus markets. I fundamentally just believe in creating cool clothes for cool chicks. Whether you wear a size 4 or 22, I got you covered! PHOTO: ESTRELLA FASHION REPORT.

SEASON STAPLE

E: Who are your fashion icons? Where (or who) do you look to for your personal style inspiration? S: For artistic fantasy and vision, I’ve always been a huge fan of Alexander McQueen, Thierry Mugler (women’s collection) and Stéphane Rolland. My personal style inspiration comes from a myriad of places from street fashion, to art, to whatever is going on inside my head! E: Tell me about the experience of seeing your own designs on the runway at this year’s Full Figured Fashion Week (FFFW). S: FFFW was such a wonderful experience! It’s the first time that I have presented in NY and to be on that stage was absolutely amazing. It was so surreal that up until the time I was awarded the Designer of the Year award by Gwen Devoe, the founder of FFFW, I was expecting Ashton Kutcher to jump out and yell, “You’ve been punk’d”! E: What can we expect from Rue 114 in the future? S: I hope to continue to grow as a business, strengthen my craft and build a brand that is synonymous with the celebration of different sizes and the beauty of them all! AG ..C A

Nail down this season’s metallic trend with some easy-to-create tips in shiny, glittery, autumn-worthy shades. BY ASH KOWALEWSKI

While it may not be the most practical for those glued to their keyboards, this textured caviar look is great for a night out on the town.

Who says metallics can’t be neutrals? This all-silver mani is chic, edgy and stands out against any ensemble.

This luxe-looking nail art will instantly jazz up any look and can be switched up by swapping in new shades.
