FASHION RULES ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN. When it comes to my personal style, I have never listened to the archaic rule book created for plus size women. [Throws out invisible rule book.] And you shouldn’t either! I’m so excited to be sharing with you how I dare to be myself with fashion by following the only rule that matters: wear what you love! I hope that you can find inspiration here and wear what you love too, or by trying something new. With spring comes warmer weather, longer days, the blooming of flowers... and well, everything! Oh, and it’s the perfect time of the year to start trying new trends. After months and months, we no longer have to hide under layers of black, burgundy and camel to protect ourselves from the frigid cold. Needless to say, it can be overwhelming to think, ‘how am I going to be daring and try out a new trend?’ The easiest way to incorporate a new look in your wardrobe is with colour, and I’m ready to break out one of my all-time fave palettes: PASTELS! Embrace the sweet and softer side of the colour spectrum by finding fresh, unexpected ways to wear this oh-so-darling palette. Try a head-to-toe monochromatic powder blue power-suit, a blush-toned trench coat or for the daring, mix it up with mint and buttercup yellow. The pretty pastel sky’s the limit! If you’ve watched even ten minutes of Chrissy Metz onscreen, you’ve felt convinced that you know her like a friend. Her warmth and sincerity practically radiates off the screen. She feels so impossibly familiar that it’s hard not to get attached. Multiply that by 100 and you’ve got Metz in person. DARE’s spring cover shoot has no shortage of laughs, dance parties, and songs being belted out while in hair and makeup (including one of her own for her new film Breakthrough—but more on that later). Metz is a ray of sunshine in an already light-filled studio in downtown LA. While playing a part in two of the biggest shows on television (This Is Us and American Horror Story) sounds like a whirlwind to us, it’s a fact Metz herself is still processing. She’s bewildered and unfailingly grateful at what her life has become. Take when This Is Us won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at this year’s SAG Awards. “For the record, I did not think we were going to win,” Chrissy admits. “The category is stiff and network shows aren’t always the
favourite.” She’s savouring every second of the iconic show’s muchdeserved success, though. “It’s an absolute gift on every level.” It’s not lost on her that her character Kate Pearson’s existence is nothing short of “timely and necessary”. The show is unique in that it never reduces Kate to her body shape or size. Being part of a movement that’s setting a new standard for body inclusivity in movies and television isn’t something Metz just takes seriously—it’s something that she marvels at. “Oh, what a time to be alive!” This may not be the career Metz expected, but reflecting
on her childhood makes it clear it’s the one she was built for. “I always loved entertaining and doing impersonations,” she says of what first sparked her love of acting. “I loved and was inspired by Carol Burnett, Jack Lemmon and Jim Carrey. I had no shame when it came to making people laugh. I also knew I wanted to feel a part of something [that made me] feel less alone.” Part of the meteoric success of This Is Us is due to her ability to do just that. Acting is hardly a science but Metz’s approach is foolproof: “The more open and vulnerable you can be the more receptive the audience.” 19

Nailing a role as vital as Kate wasn’t enough for Metz. “Everyone’s story is important to tell and I want to be a part of that storytelling,” she says. For Breakthrough (releasing this April), she hurled herself into a new challenge. During filming, Metz grappled with portraying the true-to-life character of Joyce Smith. In 2015, Smith’s son John fell through the frozen Lake St. Louis in 20

Missouri and was declared dead by paramedics for almost an hour before his heart restarted. Telling Smith’s story wasn’t a task Metz took lightly. “There is a sense of responsibility to honour the magnitude,” she explains. Spending time with the real Joyce bolstered Metz’s determination to truthfully depict “her unconditional love and her powerful conviction.” Metz reasserts her own power as a
performer not only in her onscreen role but on the film’s soundtrack, which features “I’m Standing With You”, penned by Diane Warren. Arriving at that point of selfpossession wasn’t easy for Metz. After what she describes as “a lot of heartache and tears”, she reached a powerful realization: “We’re purposeful if we simply exist.” To Metz, celebrating the existence (and triumphs) of other powerful women in her industry isn’t a task to be completed. There is just no other conceivable alternative. Take a scroll through her Instagram and you’ll find posts cheering on Glenn Close and Regina King’s Golden Globe wins. “We don’t do it enough!” she says. “Supporting and cheerleading your inspirations just feels right.” When it comes to next steps, Metz is not afraid to set her sights high. Her to-do list of people to work with reads like a who’s who of Hollywood titans: it includes Academy Award winners like Judi Dench and Allison Janney, plus Bridesmaids director Paul Feig and The Favourite’s Yorgos Lanthimos. Lately, she’s as busy as ever. “We’re getting a powerful novel made into a film,” she hints. She’s also hard at work getting an EP of her own original music off the ground. Then there’s her aspirations to get into producing. Packed schedule aside, it’s hard to escape the feeling that Chrissy is just happy to be here (“here” being wherever her journey is taking her). When she says “literally anyone!” after we ask her about her musical inspirations, for example, it’s not a cop-out. She means it. She finds the beauty in every corner of her world. She really wants to do it all. (For the record, she’s into Lizzo right now.) Regardless of the project, though, her intention is unmistakable. “This is what I’ve always wanted: to give love, receive love, and heal our wounds collectively.” Sounds like a game plan to us. █

I was just pumped that my rent was paid for the month! Then Chubstr ran an article with a picture of me from the Target shoot. We did an interview and it got picked up by every outlet imaginable. I was invited to Good Morning America! That’s when I got a phone call from Ivan Bart, the president of IMG

It’s a matter of relatability. Larger men often feel like they can’t be sexy or dress fashionably because that’s what society has told us for so many years. When they see people like myself and fellow brawn influencers, they can connect with us on a greater level.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START THE PREP GUY? I was going through a tough period in university. Originally, it was a private online journal. Six months into writing, I showed it to a couple of close friends who said it looked great and was a unique concept. Once the blog launched, it snowballed into a full-time career. TELL US ABOUT THE JOURNEY BEHIND LAUNCHING CHUBSTR. I started Chubstr in 2011 because I was frustrated with the lack of clothing options in the styles I liked and sizes I needed. After years of frustration, I started a Tumblr blog to complain about the lack of options available for plus size men. To my surprise, people began sharing my posts and writing in, asking for advice. I realized there was something more important here than simply a place for me to
complain. A few months after that, Chubstr launched with a mission to help “men of size find, create and share their style with the world.” WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO FASHION? I’ve always been inspired by art, music, photography and fashion - even the stuff I couldn’t fit into. Finding ways to show my personality through clothing was so, so important to me as a teenager.
