Fashion month is officially in full swing and curves are ruling the catwalks. Curvy models took to the runway for both Hayley Elsaesser and Mani Jassal at Toronto Fashion Week. In New York, Christian Siriano, Chromat, and Cushnie (all longtime champions of body diversity) featured a starstudded mix of straight and curve models in their spring shows. Here’s to inclusivity as more than just a passing trend!

here were you when #JusticeForBarb happened? Were you one of the fans who took to Twitter to bemoan the death of Stranger Things’ most beloved underdog, Barbara Holland? Were you too busy binge-watching to tear your eyes away from your television screen? Neither here nor there, if you’re into high school drama, sci-fi, comedy, or just plain good television (so... pretty much everybody), you know and adore Shannon Purser.

I feel the need to constantly prove to myself that I deserve to be here.
“When the internet exploded with support for [Barb], I was blown away,” Purser says. “I thought people would forget about her by the end of the season.” Despite Purser’s surprise at the overnight explosion of the Cult of Barb, understanding the actress’ scenestealing charm doesn’t require much digging. Barb has multigenerational cult icon appeal: for older audiences, she’s a nod to wisecracking John Hughes heroines of the 80’s. For younger fans, she feels approachable and warm—less like a flattened teen stereotype and more like the girl who sits behind you in homeroom. “[Barb] feels out of place and awkward and she wants to be accepted without having to compromise who she is,” says Purser. “I think a lot of us relate to that.” Not long after Stranger Things came roles on Netflix’s Riverdale
and NBC’s Rise that only reaffirmed her ability to portray the complexity of being a teen on screen. Oh, and there was that Emmy nomination last year too! “I was on my way to Canada to do Riverdale when all the texts started flooding in,” she says. “It’s only driven me to work harder. I feel the need to constantly prove to myself that I deserve to be here.” With her latest role in Sierra Burgess is a Loser (out now on Netflix), Purser’s doing just that. It’s a step outside her comfort zone of darker fare—think a mashup of feelgood comedies like Pretty in Pink or Some Kind of Wonderful. “I definitely tend to gravitate to more serious, dark material because I’m a pretty serious person and I’ve dealt with a good amount of darkness in my life. It feels familiar,” she says. Shooting Sierra Burgess is a Loser involved decidedly less screaming at monsters from parallel dimensions, but came with its own set of challenges. “Some of the most difficult scenes I’ve done have been comedic,” she admits. That she pulls them off is a testament to this powerhouse’s ever-growing range. 25
ON THE COVER Purser’s keen on continuing to flex her acting muscles and tell the stories of teens on film, citing an adaptation of the YA bestseller Eleanor & Park as a dream project. “[It’s] one of my favorite books,” she gushes. “It is such an honest depiction of what it’s like to be young and in love for the first time.” Her reason for eyeing the role of Eleanor is likely not far from why she strikes such a chord with fans who don’t recognize themselves in other clichéd portrayals of teens. “When I was a teenager, I didn’t feel like a stereotype. I had so many complex emotions and experiences during that time of my life and I want to honour that in my acting,” she says. “Honesty is very important to me and I try my best to bring that to every role I play.” That commitment to honesty runs through all of Purser’s acting choices and beyond. Since being catapulted into the spotlight, she’s been a vocal advocate for increased representation in film. The persistent disconnect between reality and

who gets to be visible in the media frustrates her. “The stories we see on screen should be an opportunity for marginalized voices to be heard. They should be an opportunity for us to experience empathy for people different than ourselves,” she says. She counts Ava DuVernay as “a revolutionary” in creating films with complex and empowered female leads and giving a voice to previously ignored communities. Purser hopes to be an equally strong voice for plus size women. “I can think of less than 10 plus size actresses who are well-known in this industry. That just boggles my mind. A large percentage of women in this country are over a size 12 and yet we very rarely see them on screen,” she says. Like any curvy woman with a love of clothes, she’s also eager for the fashion industry to start responding to the needs of consumers. “When I go to awards shows, a very small amount of designers are willing to dress me,” she says. “The fashion industry needs to do better.” 27

One quick scroll through her Twitter timeline—where she deftly toggles between shutting down hate and starting conversations on body positivity and mental health—makes that clear. On set and off (she’s currently filming season 3 of Riverdale), she’s optimistic and empathetic with a good dose of grit—in other words, the perfect young heroine for our times. “Some actors want to be known only as actors and that’s fine,” she says. “I feel that I have this amazing platform and I want to do it justice.” █ 28
