This is my absolute favorite month. November is the real heart of fall - people are already starting to display that giving spirit that fills the air with warmth and joy, families come together (in whatever way they’re able to this year), and football is on every weekend!

In a year marked by more downs than ups, I truly hope that each and every one of you, my neighbors, has found reasons to smile. I am thankful for those that opened their homes and shared their families with me and our community this year and for those neighbors that read our magazine each month and support our local businesses. And to our businesses, thank you for showing up for our town, and for allowing us to create this feel-good magazine.

Meet the Houssels Family: The Boys are Back in Town

K

athleen and Eric Houssels are super parents. This busy working pair has not one, not two, not even three, but five growing boys running around their westside home: Dane (16), twins Wyatt and Will (8), Knox (5), and little Walker (3).

Eric earned his Economics degree from Stanford University.

He then went on to Duke’s Fuqua School of Business to earn his MBA and CFA. While there he met his future wife, Kathleen, also earning her MBA and CFA. Kathleen attended Duke following her time at Harvard University where she earned her degree in Economics. These investment-minded love birds married in 2009.

Currently Eric runs an investment management firm for private investors, his own business that he has proudly owned for more than two decades. He is also a founding board member of Lexicon Bank, based in Las Vegas. Kathleen has spent over 20 years in the investment management industry and just recently retired from her role as the Global Chief Investment Officer at AXA Rosenberg Investment Management. She is now focusing on helping front line and lower income workers build wealth.

On the home front, five boys certainly equates to a busy household! The kids love everything outdoors; hunting for lizards and snakes, catching insects, fishing and playing in the water, and of course riding bikes. “Golf is the special talent in our family (except for Mom),” says Eric. “In July, Dane, our oldest, became the first Houssels to make a hole-in-one during a family vacation in Las Vegas.” This year was also the year that Dane and Eric ended their annual golf trip to Bandon Dunes with a win over the other 3 father-son pairs that attended the friendly four-day competition. The family enjoys its golf at Diablo CC, where they joined in early 2020. Mom may not have been bitten by the golf bug, but she takes her talents elsewhere, although it’s been awhile since she showcased her all-state and Division 1 softball skills.

The kids also love basketball. They love to root for the LA Clippers and the Milwaukee Bucks. Other professional teams that they follow include the New England Patriots, the 49ers, the Raiders, the A’s and SF Giants, and of course Dad’s Alma Mater, Stanford, as well as the Florida Gators and the UNLV Rebels. It’s clear this family has ties all over the country, and they’re proud to showcase that in their allegiance to various teams!

When not watching and/or playing sports, the whole family loves to get together to play various board games: backgammon, cards, chess, etc. The Houssels family has been known to incorporate their Vegas ties into family time and place the occasional

household wager on a game. Will and Wyatt are ready for the big leagues; these precocious twins are sharp liars’ dice players too!

The Housselses have enjoyed getting involved with their community. Eric “helps coach a number of youth sports including basketball, golf, soccer, and baseball.” The Houssels family are also members of Community Presbyterian Church, and are involved in other organizations like Mobilize Love, National Review Institute, Next Step, and the Center for Risk Management Research at UC Berkeley.

Of their home in Danville, Kathleen says, “Our neighborhood is happy and peaceful.

Everyone is friendly and respectful. We love being able to walk to downtown Danville, our schools, and our church. We are so thankful to live in Danville - it has exceeded our expectations! It is such a great place to raise a family.”

Eric and Kathleen work hard to instill in their boys the family motto: “Do what you say and say what you do.” Their loving marriage, beautiful family and successful careers are a testament to their strength in character and the hard work that they put in everyday to show their boys exactly what that family motto means.

Each year Kathleen and Eric love to take the boys up to Tahoe for a couple of weeks. During this year’s trip they had a profound realization: “Our family is our great blessing. When in Truckee earlier this summer, Kathleen remarked beautifully that through the virus hardship, depression and reduction to organized activity for the kids, it has become clear to her that we are a happy family. This is just awesome, our #1 blessing.”

Six-month-old Stitch is a sweet young fellow who is looking for a quiet low-key forever home where he’ll have time to adjust to a new environment as well as different people.

Once he develops his confidence, he’s a very friendly guy who loves being petted. He’s hoping that his new home has lots of toys for him to play with and some sunny windows he can settle next to for some serious sunbathing. Stitch has several vertebrae in his lower lumbar spine which are abnormal, causing an awkward gait. He can jump, run, and use the litter box despite this.

Z

ion National Park in Utah was amazing, We took our bikes all the way to Utah just so we could ride through the canyon. We saw big lizards and gopher-looking animals. We were looking for bigger animals like bighorn sheep and deer, but couldn’t find any.

It was such a fun time at Zion. I stood in the river for a minute and it was freezing! It felt like another planet with all the huge rocks surrounding us. I felt as small as an ant.

The rocks were so big. They were lots of different My little sister rode her bike too! It was a colors - red, white, brown. It almost looked like the perfect day for it, not Grand Canyon, but this park wasn’t as huge. You can too hot and not busy. hike many different trails, or take the bus up to the top if you want to look around. People were camping at the bottom, where we were. Someday I hope we can go back and stay at one of the really cool hotels nearby or camp near the river.

Thankful for Sweets

T

hanksgiving is on the horizon which means two things, pumpkin flavored EVERYTHING......and Thanksgiving.

Normally, this is where I shine as a hostess with the mostest. I can still remember hosting my very first “Friends-giving” in my first apartment many years ago and somehow managed to cram 30 people into a 500 square foot space. This year, many families will be staying local and keeping things small for safety. However, that’s no excuse to skim over the important things, like a killer dessert. I couldn’t decide between a pie, a cake or a cookie, so I went with all three. Cheers to you and your family for a healthy and safe Thanksgiving.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a medium size bowl, whisk the pumpkin, sour cream, and sugar until blended. Add the eggs, spices, and vanilla, then mix until well blended. Press the pie crust into a pie plate and using a fork or your fingers, crimp the edges of the crust into whatever design you like. Pour the pie filling into the dish and bake for 45-50 minutes. Let it cool and serve with whipped cream.

Classic Pumpkin Cookie

Sour Cream Pumpkin Pie

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in a medium bowl, then set aside. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together, then mix in the pumpkin, egg, and vanilla until smooth.

Stir in the dry ingredients and blend well.

Using a tablespoon, drop rounded scoops of dough onto a greased cookie sheet.

Bake for 14 minutes. For the glaze, whisk the powder sugar, milk and vanilla until well blended and refrigerate until needed.

Allow the cookies to cool before frosting.

Easy Pumpkin Cake

The perfect secret ingredient that makes this gorgeous pie creamy and silky.

You will need: • 1 15 oz Can of Pumpkin • 1 C. Sour Cream • 1 C. Sugar • 3 Eggs • 1 Tbs. Pumpkin Pie Spices • 1 tsp. Vanilla • 1 Store bought Pie Crust

You will need: For the cookie • 2 1/2 C Flour • 1 tsp Baking Soda • 1 tsp Baking Powder • 1 tsp Cinnamon • 1/2 tsp nutmeg • 1 tsp Salt • 1/2 C Butter, soft • 1 1/2 C Sugar • 1 C Canned Pumpkin • 1 Egg • 1 tsp Vanilla For the glaze • 1 C Powder Sugar • 1/2 tsp Milk • 1/2 tsp Vanilla

This cake is ideal if you have a big family or just need a large batch of something sweet and easy to make.

You will need: For the filling • 2 C Flour • 1 tsp. Baking Soda • 1/2 tsp Salt • 1 2/3 C. Sugar • 1 C Vegetable Oil • 4 Eggs NOVEMBER 2020

2 C Canned Pumpkin 1 C Chopped nuts 2 tsp Baking Powder 1 Tbs. Pumpkin pie spice

For the frosting • 4 oz. Cream cheese, soft • 1/4 C butter, soft • 2 Tbs. Cream • 1 tsp. Vanilla • 2 C Powder Sugar Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour two 9x11 pans.

In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, salt, sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, pumpkin, nuts, baking powder, and pumpkin pie spices together using an electric mixer. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 20-25 minutes. Allow the cake to cool and chill for at least an hour before frosting.

For the frosting In a medium size bowl, blend all the frosting ingredients together with an electric mixer until smooth.

anville residents treasure the quaintness and charm of our town. There’s no question why Danville is one of the Bay Area’s most sought after communities. Much of Danville’s charm is attributable to our local shops and restaurants. But as we know, recent times have presented many challenges and obstacles for our local business community.

That’s why Montair Elementary School is organizing the first ever Fall Gift Card Drive. As we enter the season of giving, Montair is asking its community to purchase gift cards from our local businesses as a thank you for all the years they have supported our school.

Gift cards will be creatively packaged together, creating themed

experiences such as: “Life Happens: Yoga, Shopping and Chocolate Help” and “Good Friends, Good Wine, Good Food, Good Times”.

These experiences will be auctioned off during Montair’s 2021 Auction, which is the largest fundraiser for the school.

The Gift Card Drive is a wonderful way to directly support our local businesses, support Montair Elementary School and support our children. All are welcome to show their love and support for our local shops and restaurants by participating.

Welcome to Admissions Season!

ou may have recently noticed that schools in your area have begun inviting potential parents to upcoming open houses and information meetings. It’s hard to believe that planning for next school year is already underway; you may have just finished your back to school to-dos for the current school year, but most private schools’ admissions processes typically start about a year in advance of enrollment. Fall is the time they offer events to learn about their campuses, meet the staff, and hear specifics about the programs they offer. Application deadlines can vary, but most are due in December or January, and acceptance letters are typically mailed in March. If you are interested in finding out more about the local private schools in your area, please take note of the events happening in your area.

Where to Start Finding the right school for your child, regardless of their grade, can be exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. However, it is a

great time to examine what is important to your family. What environment is right for your child to learn and grow? Are you looking for a rigorous academic program? Do you want a spiritual component? Does a strong community feel essential to you?

Remember that just like each child, each school is unique and offers different experiences.

Unfortunately, the pandemic has changed the way we can tour schools right now. Many schools have temporarily halted tours and shadow days and are turning to virtual open houses and information meetings. Some administrators are offering live Questions & Answer sessions via Zoom and Google Meet.

You can also learn a lot about a school’s climate by visiting its website and social media platforms, which allow you to see the curriculum, activities, and outreach that students are offered. At the end of your investigation, you should ask yourself whether you can picture your family as part of the community.

What to Expect Students are typically asked to take a readiness test and come to an interview conducted by teachers who are trained to observe ageappropriate academic and social skills. It is essential to keep this as low stress as possible for the child. Students should not need to prep ahead of time—keeping things casual benefits everyone involved. These assessments are conducted to make sure that the school is the right fit for your child.

Remember to take the process in stride; finding the school that is the right fit for your child and family can take time.

A New Take on Homecoming 2020

H

omecoming is an amazing event for teens, grade 9-12, to dress up, have fun with their friends, and make memories.

Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus, this year’s homecoming was cancelled because having too many people in a large crowd is like having a golden ticket to the Coronavirus factory.

Many people look forward to homecoming because of the fun experience everyone has with their friends when they go. Usually there is food, drinks, music, and a dance floor; all of these things make the event very enjoyable. I remember when I was a freshman at San Ramon Valley High School, I was very excited to go to homecoming because it was my first real high school dance experience. I went with my friends and had an amazing time and made some great memories.

This year, many things that make high school such a memorable part of people’s lives are being avoided. Last year’s class of 2020 made the best of a bad situation and had a drive-through graduation, but other events like Junior Prom were cancelled altogether. This year’s freshmen are feeling an anticlimactic start to their year; many people go into high school excited because it’s a whole new realm from from middle school, but instead of those first day of school nerves, they’re just feeling... blah. No sports, no ice breaker challenges, no dances. Despite homecoming being cancelled, many students from around the country are doing a “FoCo”, meaning “fake homecoming” - shortened ever more from “Fake HoCo.” Students wear what they would’ve worn to homecoming and instead, meet at someone’s house and have a party. They post pictures on Instagram and TikTok with the hashtag #FoCo. This renewed take on last year’s virtual proms is a great idea because it shows that teens are making the best of the situation and the limitations caused by the Coronavirus. Teens are having their own fun while being safe and sticking to new social distancing guidelines. We can only hope that soon we can return to a normal world where such alternatives to events won’t have to be made and kids can have these awesome high school experiences again!

re you ready for an adventure in the Lost Sierras? Whether you are looking for an adventure with your family, a romantic getaway, a guys trip or a weekend with the girls, you will be amazed at the Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, the culinary delights of Chef Brooke, and the Dragon Golf Course designed by Robin Nelson, all nestled within the Nakoma Resort.

In the heart of the valley of the Plumas National Forest, the Nakoma Resort is a place for adventures of all sorts. In the spring, summer and fall, there are dozens of hiking trails, mountain bike tracks, fishing in natural alpine lakes, or you can take on The Dragon Golf Course. In the winter, The Nakoma Resort becomes a wonderland with snowtubing and sledding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing; downhill skiing is just a short drive away.

The Nakoma Resort’s 42 room Lodge, at an elevation of 5,000 ft., was created with modern architecture. There are windows that extend floor to ceiling in the entry way, which give you views of

the natural forest, grand pine trees and the 8th hole on The Dragon Golf Course. The modern black steel fireplace warms the room and creates a mountain lodge atmosphere. The rooms on the first floor have open patios that allow you to walk right onto the chipping and putting green, just 15 yards away.

How could one not be intrigued by the heart and center of the resort? The Frank Lloyd Wright teepee inspired clubhouse design was conceived and drawn up in 1923. The plans were purchased and the Nakoma Clubhouse was built as the architect had envisioned it in 2001. “Wright’s exquisite design includes the distinctive façade that houses a towering four-sided fireplace and the soaring ceiling with stained glass windows and decorative friezes of abstract Indian

motifs.” The view of the unique architecture captures your attention from the moment you pull up to the clubhouse, while you sit inside the main dining room, The Wigwam, and even from the 1st tee. While you are inspired by the architecture you will be amazed at the detail and attention paid to every ingredient purposefully placed within each menu item. Every menu from breakfast to dinner is creative and delicious, made with local ingredients.

Another marvel of The Nakoma Resort is Altitude. It is a recreation center unlike any you have seen. The 12,000 square foot recreation center offers a state-of-the-art fitness center with an outside yoga area on the second floor, a rock climbing wall, a younger children’s center, and an outside large lap pool that is open all year long. There is a teen center with pool tables, video gaming centers, and Apple Computers. The rolling glass doors that run the length of the building

can be opened up to let the fresh mountain air circulate through the magnificent facility.

Don’t forget the Bistro & Bar located right inside of Altitude! The culinary delights of healthy smoothies, wraps, flatbread pizza, and other creative and healthy meals are absolutely delicious. Sit among friends at the bar to watch the game or out on the patio by the firepit or by the pool.

As you drive from shot to shot on The Dragon Golf Course in your red golf cart, each hole has a different name, which might make you question what your future holds for that hole. Some of the hole names are Hope, Faith, Charity, and Looking Glass. Yes, Looking Glass, a par 3 has quite a large pond you will need to hit over to get to the green. There are many things to navigate besides the 5,000 elevation.

These are some of the sentiments of the caring and committed staff of the Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area (DSCBA), which has been able to keep its entire staff working remotely during the pandemic to provide essential services to families with a child or adult with Down syndrome in the Bay Area.

The DSCBA was established in 1998 by longtime Danville resident Martha Hogan, whose 43-year-old son Blair was born with Down syndrome. The organization has grown significantly in the past decade, under the leadership of Nancy LaBelle, DSCBA’s executive director, and with the help of a passionate staff and many dedicated volunteers.

Headquartered in Danville, DSCBA offers classes and programs in many satellite locations around the Bay. In March, due to COVID-19, the DSCBA was faced with the unthinkable—the organization had to shut its doors following safety guidelines and could no longer support members in person. The staff quickly and thoughtfully strategized about how to best support DSCBA members using online technology.

Experience World of Nature Coming Soon in 2020

Connection is a huge part of the DSCBA’s impact. Their services are meant to bring people together—to connect, to share, and to build lasting supportive friendships. How does an organization do that without the ability to physically bring people together?

The DSCBA is a lifeline for new families, so the first step was to bring the Early Connections program online. “We have welcomed 30 beautiful new babies and their families in 2020. It is the most important thing we do—connecting new parents to each other and to vital resources,” says LaBelle.

These weekly development-based classes offer opportunities for friendship, socialization, and learning, and are highly looked

forward to by participants. They are offered in 12 Bay Area locations.

Volunteers in the community are always a big part of THRIVE’s success. Several local chapters of the National Charity League delivered supplies to members’ homes for class projects as well as lawn signs to remind members that the DSCBA loves and misses them.

Next, the Music Therapy program came online. DSCBA’s music therapist provides music therapy in English and Spanish, karaoke, talent shows and yoga classes virtually. Dance classes were added as well—something fun and active for DSCBA members to do at home and they look forward to it!

At the same time, DSCBA’s director of education developed a weekly TEACH series to empower members who are faced with at-home learning, providing strategies, tools, and supports to navigate this new form of education. Support groups were also shifted to online for moms, dads, parents of children with Down syndrome and dementia/

Alzheimer’s, parents of school age children and much more.

Lastly, in collaboration with John Muir Health, Charlie’s Clinic, Global Down Syndrome Foundation, the Lowell Berry Foundation, numerous volunteers, and local donors, the DSCBA developed a food relief program for families who were hurting for basic food supplies during the pandemic. Sixty-five families (292 people) received food boxes for three months with the generous funding the DSCBA received.

he first annual Blackhawk Women’s Scholarship Fund Virtual Dog Show was a wonderful success. With more than 125 participants and 59 photo entries, we netted $6000 that will directly fund scholarships for deserving Contra Costa women in financial need. We appreciate the generosity of our donors as well as event sponsors Pet Food Express, Tassajara Veterinary Clinic and Blackhawk Living Magazine. Without all of you we could not have made this happen.
