Hello Neighbors!

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” No matter what holiday you celebrate in the month of December, Danville is certainly the place to be to enjoy all this season has to offer. Whether its holiday parties with friends, school concerts, or family traditions...the month of December is always filled with joyful events. I can speak from experience, that although the calendar may seem overwhelming at times, it’s always important to take a look at all the joy this season brings to you and your family. Embrace the parties, enjoy the seemingly non-stop calendar events, and rejoice in the opportunity to spend time with family and friends!

Our December Feature Family is the Kruljac Family! You may know Lindsay and Justin from being hometown sweethearts growing up right here in Danville...or maybe you have been lucky enough to pop into their bakery, The Republic of Cake. Either way, their story is both sweet and sentimental and a treat for all our readers to enjoy.

If you have a story to share or know a neighbor that you would love to see on our cover, please send me an email at aangstenberger@bestversionmedia.com. We welcome all families, couples, or individuals - the only requirement is that our feature family live on the west side of Danville. So send your friends and neighbors my way, I can’t wait to meet them!

See you around town!

Baking in Community: Where Family Traditions Rise

Photos provided by the

For many Danville natives, Lunardi’s Market holds a special place in our connection to downtown…whether it’s popping in for shopping after the Farmers’ Market, never missing the special holiday treats, or picking out a steak from the best butcher in town…it’s a treasured location for us all. That is even more true for Justin and Lindsay who met at Lunardi’s in 2006. Justin worked as a checker, and Lindsay worked in the bakery….often giving Justin the broken chocolate chip cookies…his favorite. Lindsay knew “the fastest way to a man’s heart was through his stomach.” Although they became friends at Lunardi’s, it wasn’t for several years later that they would begin seriously dating, eventually getting married in Sonoma in 2017.

Both Justin and Lindsay grew up in Danville, Justin lived on the “east side.” attended Green Valley Elementary, Los Cerros Middle School; and graduated from Monte Vista High School. Currently, Justin works for California Water Service in Atherton, CA. Lindsay Summers Pirkle loved her childhood growing up on the west side of Danville (just like her mom), attending St. Isidore School, Carondelet High School and eventually San Francisco State University. Lindsay received her degree in Employee Relations with a focus on Employment Law...but her true passion has always been in baking. Lindsay

has fond memories of baking with her moms friend who was from France and at the age of 9 began taking cooking classes through the town of Danville called “Kids Knead to Eat.” She eventually was asked to assist in teaching the classes and “loved helping ‘Mrs. Pepperoni’ and the other kids in the class.” When Andronico’s Market had their cooking school, Lindsay started with kids classes, and showing that she was much more advanced than the others, she eventually was assisting in the adult class. At the time it was both exciting and educational, even having the opportunity to help famous chefs from all over the world, such as Tony Geningnani and Martin Yan. She was even on the TV Food Network!

During her time in college, Lindsay worked at the Orinda Theater (her dad is one of the owners) and she was lucky enough to meet the owners of Republic of Cake. They knew of Lindsay’s passion for baking and when they decided it was time to sell their beloved bakery, they reached out to see if she had an interest ... .a dream falling right into place! In 2016, they purchased the bakery and continued to build on its legacy of one of Orinda’s best bakeries. Fast forward through marriage, Covid, babies, and moving back home to Danville, Lindsay decided it was time to move the bakery to their current shop in the Rose Garden. “The location is big enough to host kid’s parties, Mom’s Night Outs, and community events. I love living and having my bakery in Danville. I truly feel that having a business in the community that you are a part of is very rewarding.”

The Kruljac Family has been extra blessed with a successful business and three beautiful children. Everly (6) is a first grader at Montair Elementary. She is lucky enough to have the best teacher (Mrs. Jensen!) and she loves art and playing soccer. Lainey (4) is currently enjoying her last year of preschool at Young Learners Academy and looks forward to dance class and joining her big sister at Montair next year. Sweet baby Leo is only 9 months old and is happy to tag along to all the girls’ activities (or hang out with Mom at the Bakery!).

A Kruljac family tradition is to spend the kids’ 1st birthday at Disneyland, so with Leo turning one this February, the whole family is excited for their upcoming trip. Even though they are very busy with their jobs and young children, Lindsay and Justin love making time for weekend trips, camping and utilizing their season passes to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

Although having a business and three kids keeps Lindsay very busy, she loves being involved with the Montair PTA, currently serving as the VP of Programs and Activities

and Hospitality Chair. She is also the Leader of Everly’s Girl Scout Troop and gearing up for cookie sales! One of Lindsay and Justin’s passions is teaching their children the value of hard work and perseverance. They “want them to see that success comes from dedication and effort, not just talent.” Oftentimes the children will come to the bakery early before school and also be there after the shop is closed. Seeing their mom work towards her goals is a

priority for Lindsay. She wants them to not be “afraid of challenges and understand that work ethic will take them further than anything else” in life.

Prioritizing their love and connection to family is also something that is important throughout the Kruljac household. Lindsay recalls “Growing up we would have Sunday dinner at my grandparents’ house. I remember my grandma pulling out vanilla ice cream and cake cones every week. I never realized how important this time was until I had kids of my own. We continue this tradition and have Sunday dinner with my family. I hope my kids look back when they are older and remember this special tradition.”

Finding their way back home to Danville felt very surreal as they bought their home during the 2020 lockdown, when Open Houses were not even permitted. Lindsay and Justin knew they wanted to be on the westside and found a perfect home, but could only see the inside of the house via FaceTime. Thankfully, they ultimately trusted what they said on the call, and it “was the best decision we made for our little family,” Now they have a house that is truly a home, and they are lucky enough to

live next door to neighbors who are their best friends along with their daughters. While Lindsay spends a lot of her time at the bakery whipping up cupcakes, cookies, pastries, cakes, and more…she loves sharing her love of baking with her community. Staying connected to everyone by riding bikes around the neighborhood, walking downtown as a family, or checking out all the restaurants are treasured activities for the Kruljac family. Be sure to say hi when you see them in town or at Republic of Cake!

Closing the Year, Opening a New Chapter: Coaching Through the Empty Nest

As 2025 comes to an end, many parents are entering a new season of life, one where the kids are growing, the house is quieter, and the question becomes not “Who do they need me to be?” but “Who do I want to become?”

As 2025 winds down, there’s a different kind of quiet settling in. The house that once pulsed with energy, the music, the laughter, the late-night snack runs now feels still. The college move-ins are done or will start soon, the goodbyes have been said, and you’re learning what the silence sounds like after years of constant motion. It’s a mix of pride and ache, isn’t it? You’ve raised strong, capable young adults who are out discovering their own paths. But in the quiet moments, you might find yourself wondering, Who am I now that they don’t need me every day?

Becoming an empty nester is one of life’s biggest transitions, not because something has ended, but because something new is beginning. For years, you’ve been the cheerleader, the organizer, the late-night problem-solver. Your world has revolved around helping others grow. Now, you finally have the chance to focus on your own growth, and that can feel both freeing and unfamiliar.

Before rushing into a new set of goals for 2026, take a pause. Reflect on everything this season has taught you about patience, strength, and unconditional love. You’ve poured so much of yourself into others, and now it’s time to pour some of that energy back into you. What passions have been waiting quietly in the background? What dreams have you put on hold while raising a family?

This next chapter is an invitation to rediscover yourself, not as who you were, but as who you’re becoming. Maybe that means exploring new interests, deepening your relationships, traveling, or simply slowing down long enough to breathe and reconnect. The beauty of this season is that it’s yours to define. There’s no script, no set

playbook, just open space and possibility.

At EYH Life Coach, we believe that moments like this are where transformation truly begins. Coaching isn’t about starting over; it’s about moving forward with clarity and confidence. It’s about rediscovering your purpose and designing a life that reflects who you are today, not just who you’ve been for others.

As you close the book on 2025 and look ahead to 2026, give yourself permission to dream again. You’ve spent years helping your children step into their next season. Now it’s your turn. The house may be quieter, but your future is wide open. Let’s make 2026 the year you rediscover your rhythm, your purpose, and your joy.

Your next chapter starts with you and at EYH Life Coach, we’re here to walk beside you as you write it.

Christina Dalton, MS, MCC, is a Master Certified Life Coach and the founder of EYH Life Coach, where she helps individuals navigate life transitions with clarity, confidence, and purpose. Through oneon-one coaching , she empowers clients to rediscover who they are and design meaningful new chapters of their lives. Should Selling Your Home Be a Family Decision?

It’s that time of year again. The town is festive, homes are decorated and many special gatherings and traditions are planned. For many families, the holidays are the only time that everyone comes together. This can lead to some amazing conversations…or difficult ones. One of the most common and challenging topics that I hear from my clients is when other family members have a strong opinion about the sale of their home.

Let’s think back to when you first bought your home. Perhaps you were starting a family and you chose the perfect home to raise your kids. Fast forward 15, 30 or 40 years (maybe more). You’re likely in one of two positions. Either you still love your home and wish to stay indefinitely, or you’re ready for a change. Either way, it’s a big decision with lots of things to consider, and you’ve given it a lot of thought. With some enthusiasm, you share your decision with family members over the holidays. Before you know it, the conversation has turned and you may be hearing, “You CAN’T sell the family home!” or “You have to sell this house!”

Should selling your home be a family decision? In most cases, no. However, it really depends on your family structure and the motivation behind the decisions. If the objection to selling is strictly emotional, coming from one of your adult children, then hopefully they’ll come around when you share your reasons for wanting to sell. Odds are they are living someplace else and your move really doesn’t impact them. If the home is truly special and it’s been passed down for generations, perhaps they’ll want to buy it? Maybe the objection is not emotional, but it’s actually practical from

a financial perspective. Thoughtful estate planning can make a huge difference in tax consequences and financial outcomes. Be sure to listen and research your options with trusted professionals, if this is the concern. I see too many people decide to give up their dreams, or continue to live in a home that is no longer right for them, instead of paying the taxes. It’s a personal choice.

Now imagine that you’re perfectly happy in your long term home, and you have no desire to move…but your kids think you need to! Rather than just getting upset with them, it’s a good idea to at least listen to their reasoning. Are they concerned about your safety and general well being? Can you afford to maintain the house and your current lifestyle? Are they asking you to sell and move closer to them, out of the area?

There can be a lot of complex decisions. For example, if you’re considering moving to be closer to your family, make sure that everyone has a clear understanding of what that will look like. If you’re planning to help with the grandkids, will that be every now and then, or everyday? I’ve seen many adult children concerned that their parents are socially isolated, as they age. Their logic is that if they move closer to the kids, then they will be socially fulfilled. In reality, if the parents have a long-standing network of friends and neighbors in their current community, moving to be closer to family may actually create isolation. Depending on your family dynamics and the destination, it can also be a beautiful arrangement. Every situation is unique, and ultimately, the decision to stay, move, sell your home or keep it, should be your own.

Do you have real estate questions? Every home is unique. Please feel free to reach out to me at 925-964-5010 or via email at Lisa.Hopkins@Compass. com. Even if you’re not planning a move, I’m happy to help by providing you with relevant data, enabling you to make a well informed decision. It’s never too early to start planning for success.

Lisa’s consultative and solutions based approach to real estate has been impressing her clients for 34 years. Lisa is an East Bay native and longtime Danville resident, where she’s been actively involved in the community while raising her two children. DRE#01111126

MYOKINES: MUSCLE’S SECRET MEDICINE

The holiday season is full of joy, but let’s face it, it can also bring stress, long to-do lists, and plenty of distractions. At Mighty Pilates, we know one of the simplest ways to keep your footing through it all is to stay grounded by moving your body with purpose.

Science backs this up. Aerobic and mindful movement like Pilates, yoga, or even a brisk walk increases blood flow to the prefrontal cortex – the part of the brain responsible for reasoning, self-control, and empathy. A little movement not only makes you feel good, it also helps you think clearly, manage stress, and show up more fully for the people around you. What better way to embrace the spirit of the holiday season?

What are Myokines?

Think of your muscles as a pharmacy. Each time they contract, they release powerful messengers called Myokines. These molecules circulate throughout your body, improving health, fighting disease, and slowing decline. Muscles are the pharmacy, Myokines are the medicine. Strength training is the delivery system.

Why Myokines matter

Science is clear: resistance training is one of the most effective ways to release myokines. These molecules do far more than build muscle.

• Metabolic Regulators. Myokines like IL-6, IL-15 and irisin enhance glucose control, fat metabolism and insulin sensitivityhelping fight and prevent type 2 Diabetes.

• Anti-Inflammatory Power. Exercise-released IL-6 triggers anti-inflammatory pathways, lowering harmful systemic inflammation and supporting recovery.

• Brain and cognition. Myokines such as BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) and CTSB improve memory, mood, and learning while protecting against cognitive decline.

• Immune defense. Research suggests myokines strengthen immune signaling and may even play a role in cancer prevention.

Why Strength Training is the Delivery System

Unlike casual activity or steady-state cardio, evidence-based

resistance training provides the targeted stimulus to maximize myokine release.

• Effort-driven. It doesn’t require marathon workouts. The right level of effort is what unlocks the medicine.

• Safe and sustainable. With Exerbotics, resistance is precisely controlled and joint-friendly, so every fitness level benefits.

• Consistent activation. The Exercise Coach protocols ensure myokines are released in every session, with no wasted effort.

What Myokines do for you

When you train your muscles to release myokines, you unlock a cascade of benefits:

• Metabolic Protection. Better blood sugar regulation and fat balance

• Lower Inflammation. Healthier heart, joints, and circulation.

• Cognitive Resilience. Sharper thinking, stronger memory, elevated memory.

• Immune Strength. Improved defense and systemic resilience.

• Age resistance. Myokines counter muscle loss (sarcopenia) and drive healthier aging.

Bottom Line: Muscle as Medicine

• Muscle is the pharmacy

• Strength is medicine.

• Evidence-based medicine resistance training is the delivery system. The body’s most powerful medicine is already inside of you! Strength Training unlocks it!

If you or someone you know is ready to unlock this powerful medicine we invite you to come on in for 2 Free Promo sessions to give our Effective, Efficient and Safe Strength training program a try. You can reach us at 925-378-5941 or go online to the exercisecoach.com.

SRVEF Kicks Off Its Season of Giving:

Become

a

Friend of the Foundation and Support Elementary Visual Arts

This year, the San Ramon Valley Education Foundation (SRVEF) is proud to launch its annual Season of Giving beginning on Giving Tuesday, December 2, 2025, and continuing through January 15, 2026. During this season, SRVEF invites our community to come together in support of something joyful, formative, and deeply impactful for students across the district: elementary school visual art education.

Become a Friend of the Foundation

By participating during the Season of Giving, you can become a Friend of the Foundation, directly funding essential art supplies for elementary classrooms. Your contribution ensures that every child has access to quality hands-on art experiences.

Paint, clay, drawing tools, paper, brushes, and mixed-media materials may seem small, but for a child, they unlock imagination, confidence, and the ability to express identity and emotion. For teachers, they are the tools that bring lessons to life and nurture creativity across subjects.

Why Art Education Matters

For many students, art is the spark that makes school feel exciting, engaging, and meaningful. Research continues to show that art education plays a vital role in child development, supporting:

• Creativity & Innovation: Art encourages children to think differently, explore new ideas, and solve problems in imaginative ways—skills essential for future careers.

• Emotional Growth: Through drawing, painting, and building, students learn to express feelings, build resilience, and develop confidence.

• Fine Motor & Cognitive Skills: Using art tools strengthens coordination, spatial reasoning, and critical-thinking abilities.

• Cultural Awareness & Connection: Art introduces students to diverse cultures, stories, and perspectives, helping them understand both their own identity and the world around them.

• Academic Success: Students who participate in arts programs often demonstrate improved performance in core subjects and are more likely to stay engaged in school.

Above all, art gives children a voice. It allows them to explore who they are and who they can become.

Your Gift Makes a Direct Impact

Every contribution during SRVEF’s Season of Giving goes straight into providing classroom art supplies, materials that teachers rely on and that students eagerly look forward to using. With your support, every elementary school in our district can offer enriching visual art opportunities that inspire

curiosity, joy, and lifelong learning.

Join Us This Giving Tuesday

On December 2, and throughout the Season of Giving, we invite you to stand with SRVEF by becoming a Friend of the Foundation. Your generosity today builds the creative thinkers, problem solvers, and innovators of tomorrow. Go to srvef.org to become a Friend of the Foundation!

Shelby Pie

For the holidays, there is nothing better than a new dessert recipe. December is also my cousin Shelby‘s birthday! So, I decided to create a pie for her. A multi-layered, cheesecake-adjacent confection that includes tropical flavors like coconut and macadamia nuts. An homage to her years that she lived in Hawaii. This pie is perfect for the up-and-coming holiday season, because it can be made well in advance for a party and looks beautiful next to a cup of hot chocolate. Happy holidays, everyone!

YOU WILL NEED;

• 1 premade graham cracker pie crust

• 1-8 ounce block of cream cheese, softened

• 2/3 cup white sugar

• 2 large eggs

• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 2 tablespoons melted butter

• 1-3.4 ounce package vanilla pudding mix

• 1/2 teaspoon coconut extract

• 1 1/2 C. milk

• 2 C. of Cool Whip

• 1/2 C. chopped, macadamia nuts

• 1/2 C. toasted coconut flakes

PUTTING IT TOGETHER;

Preheat the oven to 350°. Using an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese in a medium size bowl until it’s soft. Then add the sugar and mix. Then add the egg, butter and vanilla. Mix it well. Pour the mixture into the pie crust and smooth it out. Bake for 30 minutes. Allow the cheesecake to cool and refrigerate for at least one hour. In a medium size bowl, whisk the vanilla pudding, coconut extract and milk until smooth. Pour the pudding mixer over the cheesecake layer and smooth it out. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. While it is chilling, roughly chop the Macadamia nuts. Add the nuts and coconut flake to a frying pan and toast on medium heat for one to two minutes, or until golden brown. Allow the coconut to cool on a plate. Remove the pie from the refrigerator and spread the Cool Whip evenly over the top. Garnish liberally with the toasted coconut and macadamia nuts.

The Most Valuable Gift

As December begins, so does the flurry of holiday shopping as gift-giving season officially takes off. Gift giving has been recognized as the socially acceptable way to show others you appreciate them. In recent years, especially with the rise of social media usage such as Tik Tok and Instagram, there has been a generous uptick in consumerism. With holiday basket trends taking over our feed, it can be easy to feel as though we need that new product for our friend or we must give them a plethora of goodies from Target.

The urge to buy so much for our friends and family, while coming from a good place, is simply unrealistic and severely harmful. Videos on Tik Tok showing off holiday “must-haves” only contribute to this cycle and trap viewers into believing that their friends and family need a certain product. But, how harmful can this presented ideal be?

The truth is, it’s very harmful. The National Retail Federation has predicted that, in this holiday season, American shoppers will spend anywhere between $1.01 trillion to $1.02 trillion in retail sales. While rising inflation rates has a role in this, so does the consumer ideal that social media apps are pushing out. The pressure to spend big has grown steadily throughout the years– aided by the power of influencers who promote overconsumption as the new norm.

Moreover, consumerism can not only hurt the pockets of Americans, but can be extremely harmful for the environment. Most of these “must-have” products come in plastic packaging. As more consumers rush to buy them, the more non-biodegradable materials end up in our landfills. In fact, according to CBS news, plastic waste around the holidays is typically higher by twenty-five percent in comparison to every other time of year. The problem has grown so big that at a United Nations (UN) conference in December of 2023, environmental activist Phillip McMaster dressed as Santa Claus or rather “SustainaClaus” in an attempt to urge representatives to take action. At the Conference of Parties 28 in Dubai, he called for the UN to focus on helping people move towards a more sustainable lifestyle and protect our Earth.

While it can be easy to succumb to the pressures that social media presents dictating what gifts we should buy and how many, we must consider what do our loved ones truly need. Oftentimes, heartfelt,

personal gifts that don’t require you to break the bank can make a much larger impact than the generic goodies that are showcased online.

This holiday season consider giving out a warm smile or genuine conversation. Give back to your community and spend time with loved ones. Afterall, the most valuable gift is the one that comes from the heart!

Day Trips and Getaways

The Spirit of Christmas Starts with the First Cut

By December, getting into the Christmas spirit can seem a little stale. With stores popping out the gifts, decorations, gift wrap and toys as much as 10 weeks before December 25, when does the spirit of Christmas really settle in?

Alejandro Padilla, the new owner of the Castro Valley Christmas Tree farm, has the answer, and it’s in the motto of this establishment that started in 1965: “The spirit of Christmas starts with the first cut.”

By that, the Padilla means a family trip to their farm tucked back off Redwood Road north of downtown Castro Valley. There, families have been visiting and walking the grounds to find that perfect Monterey Pine, Douglas Fir, White Spruce or Noble fir tree. The farm provides the saw, the twine and even the netting to help families get the fresh-cut tree home.

Paul Illingworth ran the farm for about 40 years, and thought of selling. Then it was decided that Alejandro Padilla, who has worked with Paul for 36 years, should have a chance to run the operation.

The farm, which runs more than 2 miles along the sides of the San Leandro Creek, resides in a canyon that the East Bay Municipal Utilities District deemed a watershed. On the slopes among the heritage oaks and other native fauna, the cleared areas are home to what Padilla estimated about “40,000 to 50,000” Christmas trees.

A 6-inch sprig in five to seven years, depending on the species, grows to 5 to 7 feet before it is ready to take home. Constant care is needed, mostly against deer. Fencing is needed particularly in the fall when the bucks are rutting, and they rub their antlers all over the tree.

“They can strip a small tree in no time,” said Alejandro.

But that point underscores one more telling attribute of the East Bay: Less than 3 miles from a major suburban city is a track of land that remains virtually untouched – save for those Christmas trees – since the Ohlone lived throughout the region.

Having worked at the farm for four decades, Padilla can now see children of older customers returning with their own offspring for the ritual of finding “just the right one.” And for that there’s something said about a family searching together for a tree in nature sure beats the heck out of finding one in the big store parking lot.

“We get in trouble,” Padilla said, “because so many people come, and we have a line outside the gate onto Redwood Road. They have to wait because we run out of saws to give them.”

Though the care of the farm is a year-round endeavor, it will sell about 1,500 trees at about $135 each during the season: “All in three weekends before Christmas,” Alejandro said. Thus, the crew of 10 on those weekend days gets more than a little busy.

So, why a fresh-cut tree? For starters, they will stay fresh longer than those cut in early November and – like most in the region –are then trucked down from Oregon. And the sheer number of trees offer a wider selection, though it’s safe to say that anyone wanting anything taller than a 9-footer might leave wanting.

All that is secondary, though, to gathering all who want to go and traversing the groves and then making the final group decision. It adds up to an indelible experience, what is recalled fondly as “Christmas memories.”

The Castro Valley Christmas Tree farm opens the Sunday before Thanksgiving, and then is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays on prior to Christmas from 8 am to 4:45 pm.
