ERA OF EXHIBITIONS - MYSTIC SEAPORT IN THE 21ST CENTURY The opening of the Thompson Exhibition Building signals a new era of exhibitions at Mystic Seaport. Soaring architecture, advanced security, and state-of-the-art climate control combine to provide an ideal environment, not only to celebrate our extraordinarily diverse collections, but also to host some of the most valuable and historically significant objects from museums around the world. The opportunity provided by the Collins Gallery, the site of tonight’s gala, is to pull these artifacts together to tell the story of how we as Americans have always related to the sea; how it reveals our sense of discovery, drives our ingenuity, demands our fortitude, and inspires our perseverance; in essence, how the sea defines our very nature. Yet this is not a history we can tell through artifacts alone. Success in this new era will be measured by how well we connect these histories with our public; and how we achieve this connection will be most dramatically impacted by technology. Through new projection techniques we will simulate crashing waves at the entrance to our first exhibition, SeaChange; visitors will see for the first time between decks on a three hundred-year-old ship model by controlling an arthroscope; and media players will integrate photographs, film, ephemera, and interviews to present the histories of the guano trade, a Chinese bed, and an Alaskan umiak, among others. These breakthrough solutions are only the beginning of how we will employ technology to revolutionize audience engagement in the exhibition spaces centered on the McGraw Gallery Quadrangle. Your support during tonight’s paddle raise will allow Mystic Seaport to emerge as a leader in how museums leverage the best of technology to build a diverse, national audience, one experience at a time. Please consider participating tonight as we ask your to support this exceptional funding opportunity!
