English Roadmap Danebank

The English Department at Danebank is committed to developing effective communicators, critical and creative thinkers, and reflective learners. Our students study language in its various textual forms to understand how meaning is shaped, conveyed, interpreted and reflected.

At Danebank, we believe in the power of storytelling. By engaging with a wide range of past and contemporary literature from Australia and across the world, our students encounter a range of cultural and social perspectives. In a Christian learning community, we encourage students to critically examine values and compare them with their own worldviews, helping them strengthen their identities and values.

We create engaging and high-quality learning experiences. By standing on the shoulders of literary giants, students respond by taking risks in their own writing and crafting their own purposeful compositions. We aim to deepen student learning through immersive experiences and real-world connections, inspiring students as they reflect on the role of language and literature in their lives.

We believe that the knowledge, understanding and skills acquired in English will empower students to find their own unique voices as they grow into informed learners and active leaders in our ever-evolving world.

Stage 6 (Year 11 and 12)

In Stage 6, students engage with and explore a variety of texts that include widely acknowledged quality literature of past and contemporary societies. Through their responding and composing of critical and creative texts, students develop an understanding of themselves and of diverse human experiences and cultures. Students reflect on their own learning and continue to develop their ability to adapt their knowledge and skills to new contexts.

Stage 5 (Year 9 and 10)

By the end of Stage 5, students respond to and compose a comprehensive range of texts to extend their imaginations and engage with images of their real and imagined worlds. They reflect on, critically assess and articulate processes of response and composition. In considering possible meanings, they develop sustained interpretations supported by evidence and think creatively beyond the text.

Stage 4 (Year 7 and 8)

By the end of Stage 4, students understand and use language effectively. Students learn to appreciate, reflect on and enjoy language, and make meaning in ways that are imaginative, creative, interpretive, critical and powerful.
