Texas Women’s Foundation Invests 100% of Assets in 100% Gendered Impact Portfolio In November 2019, we became the first women’s foundation to place 100 percent of our invested assets in a 100 percent gendered impact portfolio, designed to yield strong financial returns and social benefits to women and girls. This bold and strategic move reflects the Foundation’s commitment to align all our resources to our mission. We are grateful for the tremendous commitment by our Board and Investment Advisory Committee (IAC) to the “all-in” strategy. Special thanks to our CFO Dawn Hooper and the IAC for their hard work in selecting the asset management team, collaborating on the portfolio design, and continuing to provide oversight and counsel on performance and impact. The Foundation’s 100 percent mission-aligned portfolio – managed by Graystone Consulting, a business of Morgan Stanley – is fully diversified across asset classes. Every fund within the portfolio is evaluated based on its financial benchmark as well as its gendered impact, measured by manager activation and intentional focus on one or more of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that specifically and disproportionately affect women and girls. As the graphic rendering of the portfolio shows, the Foundation adopted

five key gender themes within the Sustainable Development Goals: Gender Equity, Broad-based Sustainability, Inclusive Workplace, Improving Lives and Climate Action. Each of these themes is reflected in a sub-set of the portfolio, as shown here, with groups of investments chosen for financial performance and gender impact. The Foundation’s donor advised fund holders, as well as funders of named endowments, are invited to quarterly meetings where we present and discuss the performance of the portfolio – measured by financial returns and social benefits to women and girls. Women hold nearly two-thirds of the outstanding student debt in the United States—about $929 billion. In Texas, tuition and fees for public universities have climbed 21% in the past five years., on top of tuition doubling from 2000 to 2015.

The first building block, which sets the stage for success in so many ways is Education. Texas public university tuition has increased more than 21 percent in the past five years alone. While women

Throughout the report, Texas Women’s Foundation examines not only the impact of gender, but also of the intersection of gender and race on barriers to success. This is very important in health care where women of color experience the highest uninsured rates in Texas, with around one in four Hispanic women and one in seven Black women being uninsured.

On April 30, we held the first in this series. It was on the impact that the pandemic has had on child care. The positive long-term impacts of highquality child care are beneficial for children, the economy and working parents – especially working mothers. During these unprecedented times with families staying at home, many child care centers are struggling to stay open. Dena Jackson, Ph.D, COO, Texas Women’s Foundation, spoke with experts in the child care industry about the challenges they are facing as they continue providing this critical work support for families who are essential workers in our community, and how we can make sure all children are equipped with accessible quality child care.

Virtual Viewpoints: The Essentials – Education Our next Virtual Viewpoints, held on May 19th, focused on education. Our research shows that women experience significant barriers in obtaining higher education credentials due to lack of enrollment process guidance, high cost, lack of social connection and faculty support, and family financial considerations. Removing these obstacles will strengthen women and their families, and give them the means they need to succeed. Lisa de la Garza, VP-Programs, Texas Women’s Foundation, had a discussion with education experts about these barriers, how they have been heightened in our current environment, and how community agencies are working to support students through these challenges.

Our Investment Advisory Committee and Investment Managers presented the design and performance of our 100% gendered impact portfolio – its financial results and social benefits to women and girls.
