Actress & 15-time Primetime Emmy Award Nominee
From the President & CEO
Have you heard? The Foundation is turning 40 and boy, do we have a lot to celebrate!
As we prepare to kick off our year-long celebration, we hope you’re making plans to join us for our Ruby Anniversary Luncheon on Friday, November 14 honoring our Founders. (See cover story and p. 3-4.) Many thanks to our CoChairs who represent the Foundation’s four decades of impact: Shonn Brown, Laura V. Estrada, Helen Frank, Gail Griswold and Brenda Jackson. And special thanks to our corporate sponsors,
Host Committee and Ruby Patrons for their considerable help in making this a meaningful and memorable celebration!
There’s still time to sign on as a sponsor and/or to reserve your table. Simply scan the QR code on the cover or email us at luncheon@txwf.org. Individual tickets will go on sale October 1.
“we’ll be sharing “Forty Stories” over the course of the next year – stories of passion, persistence, influence and impact”
One of the most fun aspects of celebrating a milestone is the opportunity to look back on the past. With guidance from former Foundation leaders Pat Sabin, Becky Sykes and Roslyn Dawson Thompson and help from
Board Alumnae Val Lawlor and Anne Leary, we’ll be sharing “Forty Stories” over the course of the next year – stories of passion, persistence, influence and impact, beginning with the Foundation’s founding in 1985 through present day. We’ll release the first 10 of these stories at the Ruby Anniversary Luncheon. You are in for a treat!
Of course, as we celebrate, we recognize the work that’s left to do for Texas women and girls. It’s the work our Founders started and the work they’re counting on us to finish. To be sure, we are standing on the shoulders of giants – brave, bold and kind women (and a few good men!) who believed in the power of collective philanthropy to drive change. Let’s continue to make them proud as we work to build #StrongWomenBetterTexas.
TXWF Remembers Board Alumnae Icons
Joy Mankoff
Joy wore many titles with grace and power: Mother, Nana, wife, feminist, volunteer, and civic activist. In 1955, while on spring break in the Virgin Islands, she met a young navy officer, Ronald Mankoff. They married in 1959 and settled in Dallas where she began a career of activism and community involvement with a focus on women’s issues and reproductive freedom. Joy served as president/member of multiple nonprofit boards including the convening committee and first board of the then Dallas Women’s Foundation. Joy’s commitment to making Dallas a better city was unwavering, and her contributions to TXWF, including a generous estate gift, cannot be measured.
Diana Dutton
Diana spent her life breaking barriers and was a devoted advocate for women and girls. She earned a degree in foreign service, a law degree and embarked on a pioneering career in environmental law. In 1972 she became the first female attorney hired by the Environmental Protection Agency in the South-Central Region. She became a partner with Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP where she was a trailblazer in a male-dominated industry and was instrumental in mentoring and advancing opportunities for women in law, always leading with strength, intelligence, and quiet determination. A fixture in the Dallas nonprofit world, she lent her leadership and expertise to multiple organizations including as President of the then Dallas Women’s Foundation Board of Directors. Diana’s passion for creating lasting change in our community was unmatched.
KAREN HUGHES WHITE
From the Board Chair
As I step into the Chair’s role for the Texas Women’s Foundation Board of Directors, I’m honored to build on the 40-year legacy of impact created by the Foundation’s founders and the dedicated leaders who followed, both volunteers and staff. What began as a passion for empowering women’s philanthropy in support of Texas women and girls has grown into a movement fueled by the power of collective philanthropy and nearly $90 million invested in our mission. It is truly remarkable!
And yet, there is so much left to do as we work to remove the barriers to women’s economic security, stability and success. From ensuring healthcare
access and affordable childcare to addressing the gaps in women’s access to education and professional development, Texas Women’s Foundation remains committed to leading the charge for the 14.7 million women and girls who call Texas home.
“a movement fueled by the power of collective philanthropy and nearly $90 million invested in our mission”
One of the most important ways we do this is through our research – a biannual look at the state of women and girls in Texas. Our “Economic Issues for Women in Texas Report” guides everything we do, informing our advocacy efforts, our intentional grantmaking, and our evidence-based programs designed to support lifecycle leadership development for women and girls. Best of all, we share our research freely to
inform the work of other women and girl-serving nonprofits and community and advocacy organizations.
As Texas Women’s Foundation looks to the future, we do so with a new threeyear strategic plan that will launch in January 2026. The plan will guide the organization’s work and growth in line with our vision for a strong and vibrant Texas in which women share equally in opportunities for economic advancement in support of themselves, their families, and their communities.
Of course, we’ll need your help to achieve this vision. It’s through the generosity of loyal supporters like you that the Foundation has been able to come so far. And while we’ve accomplished so much, in so many ways, Texas women and girls have never needed us more! I hope we can count on your support as we continue to build Strong Women and a Better Texas!
INTRODUCING OUR NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS
We are proud to welcome the newest members of our Board of Directors. These exceptional leaders will help advance our mission in support of women and girls across Texas. We are deeply grateful for their commitment and look forward to the impact we’ll create together as we continue building #StrongWomenBetterTexas.

FEATURED CONVERSATION: CHRISTINE BARANSKI
An unapologetic advocate for female empowerment, Christine Baranski implores audiences to join together to build a better future for women —from the educational opportunities they’re afforded early in life to the equity they should expect in the world, from equal pay and leadership opportunities in the workplace to equal rights in the eyes of the law.
She has also dealt with overcoming complicated medical hardships with her loved ones. In the last years of her husband’s life, Christine was his caretaker as he struggled with diabetes. Her mother suffered from 3 different cancers over her lifetime, and her brother and father both dealt with heart-related issues.
Whether in a moderated conversation or a speech, Baranski paints a transformative portrait of what it means to advocate for others. One of the entertainment industry’s most honored actresses, Christine Baranski is an Emmy, two-time Tony, Screen Actors Guild, Drama Desk, and American Comedy Award winner.
A graduate of The Juilliard School, Baranski received her big break in Tom Stoppard’s hit Broadway comedy The Real Thing, directed by Mike Nichols, for which she won a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award.
MODERATED BY:
CAREN LOCK
We are excited to celebrate our Ruby Anniversary with Special Guests and Partners
We are thrilled to welcome Caren as moderator for this inspiring conversation with acclaimed actress and women’s rights advocate Christine Baranski. Caren Lock served as Texas Women’s Foundation Board Chair from 2017–2018, where she played a pivotal role in launching a women’s philanthropic group that has granted more than $2 million to deserving non-profit organizations serving the Asian community.
Today, Caren is the Regional Vice President and Associate General Counsel at TIAA, serving as the company’s primary liaison on legislative, executive, administrative, and regulatory matters across the Southwest and Mountain regions. She leads all legislative lobbying and regulatory advocacy efforts in the state and is a strong voice for advancing gender and racial diversity within the organization.
Together, Caren and Christine will explore the importance of equal representation and the critical investments needed in leadership development opportunities so women and girls can truly thrive.

GRANTS awarded BY TXWF IN FY25
WE ARE INVESTING IN THE POWER OF WOMEN AND GIRLS
Texas Women’s Foundation is proud to announce this year’s investment of $3.2M through grantmaking efforts that are removing barriers for the 14.7M women and girls who call Texas home. Guided by our research and focused on advocacy, we remain committed to creating a society in which women and girls can fully participate. Included in this amount is the $822,000 awarded through our Annual Community Grants Cycle, dedicated to supporting impactful work in our North Texas community.
GRANTING BY ISSUE AREA
In partnership with our generous donors and philanthropic partners – the H100 Latina Giving Circle, our Donor Advised Fund holders, TXWF Board Alumnae and our Nineteen Network – we are supporting solutions-based programs, services and strategic initiatives supporting women’s economic security and leadership opportunities. From rural to urban areas, these grantee partners are transforming the lives of women, girls and families across the state. Together, we are fueling progress, expanding possibilities, and ensuring that women and girls have the resources, opportunities, and support they need to thrive and lead.
We remain grateful for the continued support of our donors to help us make this investment possible, and we invite you to stay with us on this journey to build #StrongWomenBetterTexas
With the demand for programs and services surging across Texas, we urgently need your help to meet the needs of Texas women and families. Stand with us today to close the funding gap. www.txwf.org/donate
MEETING THE NEED FOR WOMEN’S ECONOMIC SECURITY
HEALTH CARE ACCESS
EL PASO, TX
Ciudad Nueva:
The launch of Ciudad Nueva’s Vecinas en Acción’s Community Health Worker (CHW) Training Hub in El Paso is set to significantly boost community health by empowering 15-20 local women leaders to become Certified Community Health Workers. These “Vecinas en Acción” are already trusted within their community and are uniquely positioned to address the social determinants of health, helping neighbors navigate complex health systems, mental health resources, and essential services such as food security and job referrals. Leveraging an evidence-based “Promotora Model,” this initiative ensures that health interventions are culturally relevant and community-led, ultimately improving health outcomes for hundreds of El Paso residents by effectively bridging the gap between healthcare providers and the community.
HOUSING STABILITY
DALLAS, TX
Viola’s House:
Since 2008, Dallas-based Viola’s House has been a lifeline for pregnant and parenting mothers, ages 18-24, facing homelessness or unsafe living situations. They recently expanded their programming with the new Mini Purpose Palace, designed to address the growing housing challenges in North Texas and support mothers with multiple children. Funding this initiative provides a continuum of care, offering safe housing and resources tailored to address the unique challenges of parenting larger families. The addition of the Transitional House reflects Viola’s House’s commitment to supporting clients through every stage of their journey toward stability and independence.
AFFORDABLE CHILD CARE TARRANT COUNTY
Camp Fire Texas:
A grant to Camp Fire’s Early Education Apprenticeship Program (EEAP) is making a vital impact in Texas, strengthening both women in the workforce and childcare quality. They tackle low wages in a predominantly female early education field, offering career pathways, higher earning potential, and certifications that empower women financially. This, in turn, allows more Texas mothers to fully participate in the workforce, confident their children are in excellent care. Crucially, EEAP also elevates childcare quality statewide by equipping educators with advanced skills and helping centers earn vital Texas Rising Star quality ratings, creating a powerful ripple effect that benefits all Texas families and our economy.
Inspiration and Impact: Celebrating Women and Girls
Texas Women’s Foundation hosted a full day of leadership, learning and inspiration on May 8th at the Omni Dallas Hotel with workshops, a forum and a celebration recognizing women trailblazers.
#BESTSELF
The day began with #BESTSELF, where nearly 200 students came together for engaging workshops focused on making smart, informed decisions, navigating the physical and emotional changes of adolescence, and harnessing the power of their voices to create meaningful change. From the interactive learning sessions to networking, dancing, and connecting with peers, #BESTSELF inspired and delighted all in attendance.

Executive Leadership Accelerator
A Bold New Investment in Women’s Leadership
At Texas Women’s Foundation, we believe that when women thrive, Texas thrives. That’s why we’re proud to introduce the Executive Leadership Accelerator—a first-of-its-kind leadership experience for senior-level women preparing to step into partner or C-suite roles.
This comes at a critical moment. According to our 2024 Economic Issues for Women in Texas report, women make up 44% of the Texas workforce, yet hold only 28% of top executive roles. Couple this with the persistence of the wage gap and the economic impact is staggering. TXWF research shows that women in Texas earn just 83 cents for every dollar earned by men, resulting in a $60 billion economic impact to the state. And, over her lifetime, the average Texas woman loses more than $750,000 in earnings due to the wage gap.
The Executive Leadership Accelerator is our response to these disparities—a bold, mission-aligned investment in advancing women’s leadership devlopment.
VIP Sip & Shop at Tory Burch
On the evening of April 29, Texas Women’s Foundation hosted a VIP Reception at the Tory Burch Highland Park Village store to kick start our 2025 Leadership Forum and Awards Celebration. Sponsors and guests gathered to mingle with our inspiring Maura and Young Leader Award Recipients and were encouraged to Sip and Shop with a purpose in support of the 14.7 million women and girls who call Texas home. Twenty percent of all proceeds from the evening benefited TXWF and totaled more than $3,600. Thank you to the many supporters who participated and helped us launch this exciting celebration in a meaningful way!
Created alongside Challenger, Gray & Christmas, in partnership with Communities Foundation of Texas, the Accelerator combines immersive leadership development, one-on-one executive coaching, and peer learning, with a mission-aligned capstone project, creating a powerful, cohort-based experience. Designed for senior-level women in for-profit organizations who are “ready now” or “ready next” for executive leadership roles, the program equips participants with the tools, networks, and confidence to lead with impact—in their careers and communities.
In 2025, just 16% of rising CEOs in Texas are women, down from 23% in 2024. Together, we can close the leadership gap.
It’s a natural extension of our lifecycle leadership strategy—supporting women at every stage of their journeys, from the classroom to the boardroom.
With the Executive Leadership Accelerator, we aim to:
• Close persistent gender leadership and wage gaps
• Retain and advance women in senior roles
• Expand diverse leadership pipelines across Texas
• Amplify our mission through each participant’s journey
The inaugural cohort will launch in October 2025. We invite you to learn more at txwf.org/executiveleadershipaccelerator or reach out to leadership@txwf.org with any questions.
Thank you for standing with us in this work. Together, we are building a better Texas—powered by strong women.
Many thanks also to the Tory Burch team for their warm hospitality, beautiful setting, and thoughtful attention to every detail and guest which made the evening truly special.
Together, we are strengthening our shared commitment to empowering women and girls!

Nineteen
Grantmaking:
Evey year, Nineteen, a Texas Women’s Foundation network, continues the community-focused work of our 19 trailblazing founders by allocating a $40,000 grant to an organization dedicated to empowering women and girls across the state of Texas. This year, Nineteen selected Nexus Family Recovery Center as their 2025-2026 grant recipient. Serving solely women on their journey to recovery, Nexus is one of the few residential treatment centers in Texas that welcomes mothers with their children - helping families heal, grow, and stay together. To celebrate this selection and the powerful work of the season, Nineteen held its 1st Inaugural Impact Celebration on June 7 at Movement Gyms, focused on impact, inspiration, and mindfulness.
H100
Welcome New 2025 H100 Latina Giving Circle Committee Members to DFW Hispanic 100!
This past May, H100 Latina Giving Circle, at Texas Women’s Foundation, warmly welcomed 10 incredible Latina leaders who have been selected for the 2025 grant season! The Latina Giving Circle committee has the opportunity to select organizations and programs that increase security and safety and demonstrate economic empowerment, data-driven impact, cultural awareness and inclusion, and community commitment focusing on Latina women and girls’ long-term stability and life prosperity. Each of these accomplished individuals brings a wealth of experience, passion, and commitment to advancing H100’s mission
The afternoon began with a yoga session and was made more powerful by remarks from Katie Overman, Nexus’ Chief Strategy Officer and Nineteen supporter, and a heartfelt speech by our very own Karen Hughes White, who shared why Nexus’ mission holds a deeply personal place in her heart. Attendees closed the evening by writing messages of encouragement to the courageous mothers and children currently receiving care at Nexus – a beautiful reminder that together, we are building #StrongWomenBetterTexas.
Events:
In addition to the Impact Celebration, Nineteen also hosted several new ways for supporters to engage, connect, and amplify our collective voice in the TXWF communities we serve. Both April and May provided four events that focused on community and leadership development. The Let’s Go Dutch Soiree was held on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at Chelsea Corner. It was an evening filled with great food, laughter, and connection, followed by two Work Smart salary negotiation webinars hosted by the American Association of University Women. Work Smart webinars have equipped more than
of elevating our Hispanic community through connections, opportunities and philanthropy. Please join us in celebrating and welcoming these extraordinary new Latina Giving Circle leaders and members to the committee!
