Where we are

Sestri Levante is a little seaside town on the Italian Eastern Riviera a stretch of coast which starts on the Magra estuary, near La Spezia and continues as far as Genoa, the provincial capital of Sestri Levante.

The town is the last locality to face east on the gulf of Tigullio, which is home also to Lavagna, Chiavari, Rapallo, Zoagli, Santa Margherita and Portofino.

To the west of Sestri Levante lies Lavagna, and to the east Casarza and Moneglia. Riva Trigoso is close by to the south east, appreciated for its characteristic views, its tasty fish soup Bagnum and its vast shore.

The beaches and the little port of Sestri, internationally known for its craftsmen and its trading history, is also known as the “city of two seas”, the old town being situated between two small bays, known to the locals as the bays of “Fairy tales” and of “Silence”.

This sunny place originated from the alluvial plain of the river Gromolo and lies behind a rocky promontory, “l’Isola”, the area that divides the Bay of Fairy Tales from the Bay of Silence. The former houses the tourist port, and the latter, smaller, is famous for its beautiful sunsets.

Between these two bays is the ancient centre of Sestri; the new town occupies the plain of the Gromolo. It stretches between the sea and the woods and hills, over the lower valleys of Graveglia and Petronio.

The faithful visitor of the 1800s, Hans Christian Anderson, named one of the two bays, Sestri Levante has bestowed his name on the literary prize, created for children’s literature. From this arose the prestigious name “the City of Children”.

Où sommes-nous Sestri Levante, souvent nommée tout juste Sestri, commune et localité balnéaire du département de Gênes se situe sur la Riviera Ligure entre l’embouchure du fleuve Magra du département de La Spezia et la banlieue de Gênes.

How to reach

By air: The nearest airport is “Cristoforo Colombo” in Genoa, at an hour’s journey from our destination, linked with the two main stations in Genoa: Piazza Principe and Brignole, by volabus.

There you can get the train for Sestri. Alternatively you could use “Galileo Galilei” airport in Pisa connected by intercity and Eurostar trains to Sestri .

By land: From Milan take the “tangenziale ovest” the west underpass, then A7 for Genoa/airports.

Follow the A7 until Genova Est, take the motorway A12 and exit at Sestri Levante.

From Bologna in Emilia, take the north underpass until the junction Bologna/Casalecchio, then the A1 towards Milan, following directions for Parma, then take the A15 motorway for La Spezia, then the A12 until the Sestri Levante exit.

From Rome, follow Via Salaria, then the “Grande Raccordo Anulare” ring road Nomentana/ Firenze, the A1/E35, direction Firenze Nord, then the motorway A11 to Viareggio – Camaiore, then the motorway A12 to Sestri Levante.

The station at Sestri, in the station square, offers connections with local and regional trains, Intercity and Eurostar on the principal national lines for Turin, Milan, Genoa, Bologna and La Spezia. Only regional trains stop at Riva Trigoso.

By sea: The harbour in Sestri Levante has 150 moorings of which 6 are for transit. There are 2 landing-stages; Margherita is for mooring motor boats, while Adua is for fishing vessels and boat launching.

Navigation is controlled by “Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio”, offering very competitive prices its lines which stop at all the coastal places from San Fruttuoso to Sestri Levante. It is also possible to hire boats privately at fixed prices for journeys between Camogli and Sestri Levante.

C omment arriver

Par avion : L'aéroport le plus proche est Cristoforo Colombo de Gênes qui se trouve à environ un peu moins d'une heure. Le service Volabus le relie aux gares Genova Principe et Genova Brignole d’où des trains desservent Sestri Levante. Une autre alternative, l’aéroport "Galileo Galilei" de Pise d’où des trains directs, Intercity et Eurostar desservent régulièrement Sestri Levante.

Par route : De Milan, prendre le périphérique Ouest, suivre autoroute A7 Genova-aéroport, puis prendre A7 Genova Est, puis suivre A12 Genova-Livorno et sortir à la gare de péage Sestri Levante. L’autre alternative par Parma, toutefois plus longue, prendre alors périphérique Nord, suivre la direction Bologne, prendre autoroute A1, puis autoroute A15 direction La Spezia-Genova, puis autoroute A12 vers Genova, sortir à la gare de péage Sestri Levante.

De Rome via Salaria, prendre le périphérique « Grande Raccordo Anulare », prendre direction Firenze par autoroute A1, puis autoroute A11 direction Viareggio, puis autoroute A12 direction Genova, sortir à la gare de péage Sestri Levante.

Par train : La gare de Sestri Levante se trouve pratiquement en centre-ville sur Piazza della Stazione.

Elle est desservie par trains régionaux, inter-régionaux, Intercity et Eurostar qui circulent sur les lignes depuis Torino, Milano, Genova, Bologna et La Spezia. Par contre la gare de Riva Trigoso est desservie seulement par des trains régionaux.

Par mer : la marina de Sestri levante dispose de 150 places pour bateaux de plaisance dont 6 réservées au transit. Equipée de deux pontons : Margherita, réservé aux bateaux de plaisance et Adua réservé aux bateaux de pêche et au lancement de bateaux. La navigation est gérée par le Service Maritime du Tigullio, le tarif des courses est très raisonnable, les points de service sont distribués sur toute la baie de San Fruttuoso à Sestri. Il existe un service maritime privé entre Sestri Levante et Camogli à un prix intéressant.

H ow to move about As we have seen in other Ligurian towns, a characteristic of the Gulf of Tigullio, is the closeness of the Apennine mountains to the coast, which makes it possible to go from the beach to the mountains in a short time, giving you the chance to explore very different, but absolutely fascinating worlds on the same day.

The best way to appreciate the beauty of the coast is to travel by boat along the Regional Nature Reserve of Portofino in the north to Punta Manara in the south, either with one’s own boat or taking a boat trip. A good public transport service makes movement between big and small centers easy.

On the other hand it is preferable to go inland by car to discover it better.

You may want to visit the various reserves and valleys in the area, Gromolo is very beautiful, across the village of Santo Stegno del Ponte; or you may want to go to the marvelous Cinque Terre; Sestri is crossed by State Road 1 Via Aurelia which passes near most of the coastal towns of the Levante.

Leaving the centre of Sestri Levante there are numerous footpaths for excursions. Starting from Via XXV April and walking east, in a couple of hours one arrives at Punta Manara, the end of the Gulf of Tigullio.

Monte Castello and Punto Baffe are both worth a walk, and give way to the road that leads to Moneglia. In the ancient centre of Sestri it is best to walk, being mostly a pedestrian precinct, well kept, with many shops hidden in the narrow Genoese style streets.

C omment se déplacer Comme pour bien d’autres villes de la Ligurie et du Golfe Tigullio, l’union entre littoral et montagne est un point commun.

Cette particularité donne au visiteur l’alternative d’organiser sa journée selon son humeur entre Riviera ou Apennins, permettant ainsi d'explorer des territoires opposés et étonnamment fascinants. Les excursions en bateau sont une des meilleures façons pour découvrir la beauté du littoral de Portofino à Punta Manara par exemple. A ce propos un service maritime dessert tous les petits ports côtiers.

Pour le reste du territoire, un riche réseau de transport public structuré de bus et trains est à disposition pour satisfaire toutes les destinations désirées. Par contre l’arrière-pays est plus facile à visiter en voiture. Ne manquez pas la visite des Parcs et vallées dont Gromolo et son village Santo Stegno del Ponte.

Pour revenir à Sestri, elle est traversée par la route départementale appelée “L’Aurelia” qui relie l’ensemble des villes, bourgs et fractions de l’ensemble de la région. La visite de Monte Castello et Punta Baffe sur la route qui va à Moneglia est intéressante.

Le centre historique de Sestri impose la marche à pied voire même la flânerie au travers des ruelles piétonnières appelées “carrugi” qui jalonnent boutiques bars et cafés.

N’oublions pas la randonnée, un réseau pédestre tisse les alentours de Sestri.

Par exemple le sentier qui part de via XXV Aprile et qui arrive à Punta Manara, délimitation du Golfo del Tigullio, se parcourt en deux heures.

T he cuisine in Sestri Levante

Pane e Olio

Sestri Levante dedicates the last week in November to the celebration of the new olive oil: conferences, tasting, showcooking, themed dinners, initiatives and meetings with schools.

In spite of its harshness, Liguria is known to be rich in produce, overwhelming us with its Mediterranean tastes and scents. In Sestri Levante it is easy to discover them in the traditional Genoese cooking.

When thinking of Liguria, we have to start with focaccia, either plain or filled, or the variation with cheese from Recco and baked in a wood oven. The other essential is “farinata” made with chick pea flour, water and oil, to be baked in a copper tray. Also “panissa” is made from chick pea flour. It can be served cold, cut in diagonals, with extra virgin oil, pepper and onion, or fried. It is the forefather of the modern crisp, but better. It is fried in deep oil.

In the west of Liguria it is put inside a type of white bread, and is called “fugasette”.

The first courses you can find in the restaurants of Sestri are vegetable soup, “pansotti” with walnut sauce, stock fish ravioli, “corzetti”, “troffie” with pesto, the most typical Ligurian sauce made with basil, oil, pine nuts, garlic, sheep’s cheese and parmizan cheese. Pesto is a direct descendent of the ancient Roman “moretum”.

From the area of Sestri we can taste it with the characteristic “testaieu”, which are also very good with garlic sauce, or simply with good oil and parmesan cheese.

The second courses are the “Bagnum” of anchovies, the famous dish of Riva Trigoso.

This soup simply originated with the daily catch. It was cooked on board the “leudi”, typical Ligurian boats on charcoal stoves.

Over time, onion, tomato and crostini were added to the original recipe.

There are also anchovies marinated with lemon, anchovies preserved in salt, dried cod in garlic sauce, “capon magro”, fried whitebait, “avannotti” of sardines( unfortunately banned today). Still thinking of fresh fish but more costly are shellfish and lobsters. The famous giant prawns from Santa Margherita Ligure are fished off shore from Sestri.

Fantastic stuffed mussels (known as cozze or muscoli) are a complete dish, prepared with egg, ham or mortadella, bread crumbs soaked in milk, parmizan, sheep’s cheese and many herbs, an authentic recipe and a treasure trove.

Inland from Sestri, at Castilione Chiaverese we find high quality homemade cured meats, particularly pork, salami and sausage.

There are plenty of cheeses from the organic valley in Varese Ligure, and from Santo Stefano d’Aveto; the San Ste and Sarazzu are very good, but also the prescinseua (curd) sometimes used on focaccia.

Practically all dishes are associated with the exquisite extra virgin olive oil D.O.P. of eastern Liguria, and the excellent D.O.C. wines “Portofino - Gulf of Tigullio”, some of which are even matured under water, There is the famous Moscato and some very good fortified wines. La Ligurie, contrairement à son territoire coriace, regorge au niveau culinaire de bontés parfumées et savoureuses bien méditerranéennes. A Sestri Levante il est facile de retrouver la cuisine génoise d’antan.

Vu que nous sommes en Ligurie, la focaccia cuite au four à bois tient la première place : focaccia blanche, farcie ou au fromage, spécialité de la ville de Recco.

Juste après arrive la farinata cuite elle aussi au four à bois sur une plaque en cuivre, il s’agit d’une pâte molle à base de farine de pois chiche, d'eau, huile et sel.

Avec cette même farine mais plus dense se fabrique aussi la panissa, à froid elle se coupe forme de losanges qui sont servis assaisonnés d’huile, poivre et échalotes. Les « fugassette », ce sont ces losanges ou bandelettes que l’on frit dans l’huile d’olive et que l’on sert chaud, en quelque sorte cette recette de l’Ouest de la Riviera a anticipé les pommes frites.

Passons aux « primi », premiers plats : le « minestrone » - les « pansoti » sauce noix - les « ravioli de merlu » les « corzetti » - les “Testaiêu” servis avec sauce à l’ail ou tout simplement avec huile et parmesan - les « trofie » au pesto, typique sauce verte à base de basilic, pignons, ail, parmesan et huile d’olive extra vierge. Le pesto est le direct descendant de l’antique “moretum” romain. Passons aux seconds plats : le “Bagnun” - d’anchois de l’ail, spécialité de Riva Trigoso, il s’agit d’une soupe pauvre des vieux temps qui utilisait la pêche du jour en mélangeant aux anchois, ail, tomates, oignons, persil, vin blanc, huile d’olive. Cette soupe se cuisait sur les “leudi”, typiques embarcations de transport de la Ligurie qui possédaient à bord un fourneau au charbon – les anchois salés marinés au citron – le « baccalà » morue salée séchée à l’étuvée et ail – le chapon maigre –

Tous les plats cuisinés sont parfumés à l'huile d'olive extra vierge A.O.C. du Levant de la Ligurie. De nombreux et excellents vins du terroir ne manquent pas à l’appel, il y ceux d’origine contrôlée "Portofino-Golfo del Tigullio", dont certains subissent une vinification sous l’eau. A noter le fameux muscat et d’autres pour grands desserts.

Justement, parlons desserts, ici la maestria en pâtisserie se distingue puisqu’elle fournit le Pape. Les « Baci di Dama » - les biscuits de châtaignes et de nougat – le « castagnaccio » gâteau à base de farine de châtaigne – le « pandolce » traditionnelle brioche de Noël farcie de raisins secs, fruits confits et pignons – la « Sacripante ou Sacripantina » gâteau qui doit son nom à l'exclamation de bonté par un prêtre à qui il avait été offert. A holiday in Sestri is a holiday at the sea. One of the most loved beaches is Rena, the first after “Galleria di Moneglia” looking towards the town. The proximity of the ship yards doesn’t interfere with its beauty and is frequented by traditional families, who like its sandy beach, and more adventurous people who go to the sun soaked rocks. Most of the beaches is free, and equipped with toilets and showers, umbrellas and sun-beds to rent, pedal-boats and canoes. In Riva there are two beaches in one: Riva Vecchia and Nuovo (the old beach and the new) divided by the dry estuary of Petronio. The sand is coarse, and towards the promontory the rocks begin. The beach of the Fairy- tale Bay, along the town’s promenade, has a large stretch of soft sand and is suitable for bathing, the water is shallow a long way out. It stretches as far as the tourist harbour of Sant’Anna, where it is mainly shingle, and rocky. There are many bathing resorts, some equipped to attract young people. Then there is the Bay of Silence, almost all free beach. It is one of the most wonderful places in Sestri, and coloured with lights like an impressionist painting, both at sunset and at night.If you prefer walks in the woods, in the valleys around Sestri there is an interesting network of paths and excursions; there are numerous green areas equipped for families, ideal for camping, barbeques and outings with friends.

The centre of Sestri is an ideal place if you want to enjoy some shopping, or night-life in the summer, among the narrow streets, or simply have a cappuccino in a bar. Don’t miss the craftsmen creativity market in July and August, all day till midnight, where you can buy local made articles, engraved wood lace, macramé and original mosaics.

In Piazza Bo there is the “Vela per Colombo” monument, composed of a mast, a boom and a sail in bronze, placed on a pedestal made of two circular parts of white marble and “bardiglio”. Inscribed in the middle part of the base are the words of the poet Mario Luzzi, ”Which journey gave you the winds…..” The sculpture is by the artist Giò Pomodoro and is one of the last large public works made by him before his death in Dicember 2002. This monument, dedicated to the memory of Carlo Bo, is in the old centre of Sestri, on the sea front. On no account to be left out is the Millelire tavern, a glamourous, popular place, where you can hear good music, taste an exceptional cocktail, or a very good beer.

Among the main events we must remember: ANDERSEN FESTIVAL – first weekend in June Since 1967 a writing contest, for unpublished fairy tales is held in Sestri Levante every year, the Hans Christian Andersen Bay of Fables Award. The first weekend in June, during the prizegiving, many national and international threatre groups, perform along the streets and squares of the town, often simultaneously, giving birth to the Andersen Festival, based on two main features: storytelling and street theatre.

Storytelling takes places in many evocative areas of the town where the public can see and meet the storytellers, and enjoy the charming stories in the quiet, intimate hidden corners of the village.

Pour les passionnés des randonnées, les environs de Sestri offrent un riche réseau pédestre qui jalonne vallées et monts et où des espaces et aires de repos ont été aménagés pour campings et pique-nique. Sestri centre, fameux pour son shopping est organisé au cœur des ruelles et venelles. L’été la ville vit tard le soir à la fraicheur assis sur les terrasses des cafés et bistrots. Durant Juillet et Août, le marché de l’artisanat déploie jusqu'à minuit sur les places du centre les créations artistiques en bois sculpté, dentelle, macramé, mosaïques et bien d’autres encore que le touriste peut acheter en souvenir de son séjour.

Sur la place Bo du centre historique face à la mer se dresse la composition «La Vela di Colombo» de l’artiste Giò Pomodoro en commémoration à Carlo Bo. Un mât, une bôme et une voile de bronze reposent sur deux socles de marbre blanc et « Bardiglio ». Sur la base sont inscrits les vers du poète Mario Luzzi, alors âgé de 84 ans : "Quale viaggio ti hanno dato i venti..."Quel voyage t’ont donné les vents ...". Cette sculpture a été la dernière des grandes œuvres publiques que l’artiste a réalisée avant sa mort en décembre 2002.

SAGRA DEL BAGNUN – troisième week-end de juillet Le Bagnun d’anchois est l'une des saveurs les plus traditionnelles du village de Riva Trigoso. L'anchois se mélange à la tomate et à la galette du marin en une recette qui exalte le goût de la Méditerranée. La fête du Bagnun en fin de semaine offre depuis des décennies aux citoyens et aux invités de généreuses portions de la célèbre soupe de poisson, fête accompagnée de musique et de spectacles.

BARCAROLATA – dernier dimanche de juillet Le cadre de la Baie du Silence devient la scène sous les étoiles d'un véritable défilé de bateaux qui glissent sur la mer. Touristes et citoyens rivalisent l’ornement en papier mâché, lumières multicolores et costumes de carnaval de leurs petits bateaux de pêche. En conclusion, un grand feu d'artifice multiplie le charme de la mer dans la nuit. Un jury récompense le bateau le plus beau et le plus original dans sa décoration.

MOJOTIC FESTIVAL – SILENT DISCO – juin, juillet, août Plus de 100 concerts organisés et un festival qui attire de plus en plus de monde chaque année, Mojotic a accueilli des artistes nationaux sur la scène tels que Giuliano Palma, Morgan, Caparezza, Nada, Zen Circus e Verdena ; les internationaux : Tame Impala, Mark Lanegan, Anna Calvi, Easy Star All Star, Blonde Redhead, Steve Earle e Xavier Rudd. Mojotic est également le promoteur de l'événement innovateur Shhh !, le Disco silencieux dans la Baie du Silence qui a enregistré une croissance incroyable avec ses de 8 000 visiteurs.

Nature The abundance of typical Mediterranean vegetation is the key feature of the area, as are the pines leaning over the rocky cliffs going straight down to the sea. They soften the colour of the strawberry trees and blend with the paler colours of holm oaks and chestnut trees.

The landscape of the Levante Riviera, however is not all the same. Over the centuries man has taken up the cultivation of olive trees and vines which needed terraces to survive on this steep coast located towards the east and the Cinque Terre.

Moving west towards the Ponente Riviera the landscape changes, and the hills and greenhouse cultivation lie close to a gentler inland.

In the woods and forests the vegetation includes broom, myrtle, locust tree bushes and wild flowers dance in the breeze. In the drier, sunnier places grow wild herbs like rosemary, thyme, borage, carob and spurge. Maritime and Aleppo pines are common.

Where you see a rocky mass dividing the Gulf of Tigullio from the Gulf of Paradise, that is the boundary of the protected sea area of Portofino, ideal for outdoor sport and a paradise for scuba diving.

Sestri is very close to the Gulf of Paradise, but also to Val Bisagno, and on to Val Trebbia and Val d’Aveto in

the north, and to Val di Vara and the Levantine bay to the east.

Val Graveglia, an integral part of Tigullio, is the closest and best loved by the people from Sestri.

It is bound to the historic identity of the territory of La Spezia in the east, and to that of the territory of Genoa in the west.

Val Petronio has an extraordinary biodiversity caused by the humidity of the streams flowing down towards Sestri. It is mysterious area with ancient Roman paths and wild fluvial vegetation.

The presence of heron, water hen, and birds of prey like the Peregrine Falcon and the Short-toed Eagle are evidence of the uncontaminated nature around Sestri.

There are many churches in Sestri Levante, but we will concentrate on the most important ones.

The basilica of Santa Maria of Nazareth is of unquestioned beauty, an excellent example of a renaissance building, situated in the town centre next to the town hall. The construction of the basilica took place after the final consolidation of the Isola, when the expansion of Sestri made the old church of San Nicolò too small and unsafe.

Restoration took place in the first building in 1600, traces of which are still visible in the present day sacristy, especially in that of the bishop.

They were completed by the architect Gio Batta Carbone.

The floor design of the church is that of a basilica, respecting the canons of the counter-reformation, while the inside is divided into three naves with square pillars and rounded arches.

The central nave ends in a deep apse. The decorations, begun in the 17th century, and continued in the 18th century, give it a very intimate atmosphere, accentuated by the luminosity of the complex, and by six very precious altars, four on the left and two on the right, and by the baptistery, and by hangings and frescos that decorate the vault, by well-known Genoese artists.

The Romanic church of San Nicolò del’Isola, built in 1151 on the isthmus, is the most ancient building of Sestri Levante. It was partly transformed before the 15th century, and later in the baroque period. The façade is 15th century with a great door surmounted by a three mullioned window. Plaques and mediaeval epigraphs are fixed in the walls, and other parts of preceding structures from the 8th century are visible, the work of “Columban” monks from Bobbio. The bell tower has a pyramid spire, with two light windows on all four sides.

Another place of worship not to miss on any account is the church of the “Immacolata” to which is connected the convent of Cappuccin monks with their large church yard.

Previously established in the centre of Sestri, the friars moved to higher places to pray better in solitude inland, east of the bay.

Inside the church, on the principal altar, is a statue of the immaculate virgin, wood carved in the 18th century, as well as a picture of Domenico Fiasella depicting the miracle of Saint Antony of Padua.

The style of the church is Mediaeval with only one nave and with the characteristic façade of black and white stripes, all immersed in the Mediterranean vegetation of the inland areas, and an ideal resting place for your shady walk. In the historic center, finally, there are many renaissance buildings and villas. It’s impossible to miss “Fascie Rossi” in Corso Colombo, with its tower and battlements, now a library and museum, the museum of the town and the territory; or Villa Brignoli- Balbi, with its coloured façade looking over the sea front, and don’t forget Durazzo-Pallavicini building which is now the town hall, built in the later 17th century in the central square Giacomo Matteotti, and villa Durazzo-Solari-Serlupi renamed Rimassa which gave hospitality to the Emperor Federico II, in 1784.

L ieux d'intérêts Parmi les nombreuses églises édifiées sur les lieux, la basilique Santa Maria di Nazareth, admirable exemple de l’époque renaissance, se situe dans le centre historique à côté de la mairie.

La basilique fut construite pour satisfaire les besoins spirituels de la population qui, après la consolidation définitive de « l'île » et l’expansion de Sestri, l'ancienne église paroissiale Saint-Nicolas de l'île était devenue trop petite.

C’est en 1600, sous la directive de l’architecte Gio Batta Carbone, que commencèrent les travaux de restauration en partant de l’édifice original dont les traces sont encore visibles dans l’actuelle sacristie.

Le plan de l'église basilicale respecte les canons de la contre-Réforme, tandis que l'intérieur est divisé en trois nefs soutenues par des piliers carrés à arcs en plein cintre. La nef centrale se termine par une abside profonde.

Les décorations du XVIIe qui se sont poursuivies au XVIIIe lui donnent une ambiance très intime, laquelle est renforcée par un décor lumineux.

Six précieux autels, quatre à gauche et deux à droite, le Baptistère et des toiles complètent la scène. Les mains d’artistes génois ont décoré la voûte de magnifiques fresques.

L'église romane San Nicolò de l'Ile, édifice plus ancien de Sestri levante, sera construit en l’an 1151 sur l'isthme de terre.

Au XVe siècle, l’église est partiellement transformée, puis remaniée à l'époque baroque.

La façade date du XVe siècle et le pseudo-prothyron est surmonté d'une triple lancette. L’ancienne église conserve des pierres tombales et épigraphes médiévales et d'autres vestiges structuraux qui datent du VIIIe siècle et qui correspondent à l’œuvre des moines Colombani originaires de Bobbio. Le clocher à forme de flèche pyramidale est décoré de fenêtres à meneaux sur les quatre côtés.

Dans un premier temps les frères Capucins s’installèrent au centre de Sestri et construisirent en 1640 l’église San Pietro Vincoli à laquelle fut annexé le monastère.

Plus tard, à cause de la croissante urbanisation, les frères durent se déplacer sur les hauteurs à Est de la baie del Silenzio afin de pouvoir observer le silence durant leurs prières et bâtirent l’église Immacolata. Cette dernière de style médiéval possède une seule nef centrale, sur l’autel repose une statue en bois du XVIIIe siècle de la vierge Immacolata et un magnifique tableau du peintre Domenico Fiasella représentant le miracle de Sant ‘Antonio de Padou. Les bandes blanches et noires caractérisent la façade de cette magnifique église.

Le centre historique réunit de nombreux palais et villas de style Renaissance.

Par exemple, sur Corso Colombo, l’incomparable palais Fascie Rossi avec sa tour crénelée qui aujourd’hui est le siège de la bibliothèque et du musée de la ville et du territoire - Villa Brignole-Balbi avec sa façade colorée face à la mer - sur la place centrale Giacomo Matteotti fut construit dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle le palais Durazzo-Pallavicini, aujourd’hui siège de la mairie - la villa Durazzo-Solari-Serlupt, renommée villa Rimassa qui en 1784 accueillait l’Empereur Frédérico II.

A little History The first settlements of Sestri belong to the ancient Liguri, in particular to the Tigulli tribe, who gave the area its present name. Confirmation of this comes from archeological findings in the areas of Loto and Libiola, which have shown us that there was mining in prehistoric times. Of no lesser importance are the dating and construction of paths on the hilltops and lower down, which led to the coast, helping these people in their fishing and hunting activities.

In Roman times the town is mentioned with the name Segesta Tigullorium, or Segeste. It had long been an important commercial centre, particularly for sea traffic; also the road network, improved and enlarged by the Empire, allowed a considerable trade of raw materials going inland to Val Petronio, Graveglia and Vara, but above all to the outpost of the Lunigiana.

With the fall of the Empire, new territorial and civil organization took over in mediaeval times. The centre Sestri was sheltered by the promontory in the guise of a natural fortress, the town started to expand its territory to the mainland. Around the turn of the millenium, Sestri, with the other towns of Tigullio, was envolved in the conflict between Genova and its rival Pisa in 1072. Thanks to the alliance between the Malatesta and the Fieschi, the feudal property passed to these families, taking it away from the influence of Genoa. Under the Fieschi, the counts of Lavagna, Sestri became a deposit for goods and agricultural products, due to its favourable position, the overlords began to take over political and administrative power. Not until 1134 did Sestri returned under the power of the Republic of Genoa. In that year Genoa bought the Abbey of San Colombano of Bobbio, situated on the highest ground of Sestri.

There Genoa started to fortify the town, and built its castle, marking the beginning of the end of the influence of the Lavagna counts. Under the Genoese rule, Sestri was divided into three parts: Borgo, San Giovanni and Santa Vittoria. The neighbourhoods were called “ville”.

Under Genoa, Sestri had more autonomy than before, because it was considered a military ally providing reinforcement, with this autonomy the local economy was put on its feet, thanks to its trade in oil, wine, salt and slate. From a political point of view, things changed around 1300, when Sestri sides with the Ghibellini, on the opposite side from the Genoese. Under Castruccio Castracani, after the peace treaty with the Guelfi in 1327, Castracani, loyal to the Pope like Genoa, chose a representative, assuring peace to all who wished to remain in Sestri.

The question of the Visconti happened to both Guelfs and Ghibellines, the Duke of Milan extended his ambition towards Genoa, and to fulfill this he took the whole Riviera of Levante, including Sigestri, which thus fell under the rule of Milan. After changing fortunes under the Visconti, between 1454 and1478 there were further conflicts between the Sforza and the Fieschi when the latter, an ancient powerful family got the upper hand. In 1542 and in 1607 Sestri was a victim of the terrible invasions by Saracen pirates. Under French domination in 1797 a plebiscite saw the Republic of Genoa change into the Ligurian Republic, the power went from aristocracy to democracy. Sestri was in the first canton the principle town with jurisdiction over Gromolo and Vara, and in 1803 become the principle town of the seventh canton of Gromolo with jurisdiction of Entella. Thus bound to the first French Empire from 13th June 1805 to 1814 the town was included in the “Dipartimento degli Appennini”. From 1859 to 1926 the territory fell within the 3rd “mandamento” of the area of Chiavari and became part of the province of Genoa.

The railway was built after the first world war, as well as the tunnel of St. Anna. In the second world war Sestri became an outpost for the SS, and not until 1944, after a terrible bombing raid by the English, did it manage to free itself from the German occupation.

After 1973 Sestri was part of the Mountain Community of Val Petronio, until it was disbanded 31st December 2008.

Un peu d'Histoire Les premiers habitants de Sestri appartiennent au peuple Ligure et plus en particulier à la tribu appelée Tigulli dont le nom est attribué à une zone du territoire. Les vestiges retrouvés au sein des localités Loto et Libiola nous indiquent non seulement l’époque mais aussi la façon dont l’exploitation minière a débuté durant la préhistoire. Des détails indiquent la datation des constructions des chemins qui partaient des crêtes et qui descendaient vers le littoral au profit de la population qui travaillait la pêche ou la chasse. Déjà à l'époque romaine, le nom Segesta Tigulliorum ou Segeste est mentionné ce qui indique l’existence d’un centre commercial pour les échanges maritimes. De même, le réseau routier qui sera amélioré et élargi sous l'Empire témoigne l’existence d’une vie fervente pour l’époque au niveau des échanges des produits provenant des vallées de l’arrière-pays comme Pétrone, Graveglia, Vara et de la Lunigiana. La chute de l’Empire entraine une nouvelle organisation territoriale et civile, plus tard durant l'époque médiévale, le centre de Sestri sera transféré de son alcôve en guise de forteresse naturelle à la terre ferme et s’accroîtra.

En l'an mille, comme dans bien d'autres villes du Tigullio, auront lieu des affrontements navals entre Gênes et Pise sa rivale. En 1072, la contrée qui était sous la domination de Gênes cède son pouvoir aux familles Malaspina et Fieschi qui s’allient. Sous la tutelle de la famille Fieschi comtes de Lavagna, Sestri devient un lieu de dépôt de marchandises et de produits agricoles qui au fil du temps, vu la bonne position, s’élargit en s’activant politiquement et administrativement.

Seulement en 1134, Sestri retourne sous la domination de la République de Gênes qui en 1145 acquiert l'abbaye San Colombano de Bobbio qui se trouve dans la partie haute de Sestri.

A partir de là, Gênes fortifie le bourg, construit son château en signe d’éloigner les comtes de Lavagna. C’est à cette époque que Sestri est divisée en trois fractions : le bourg, San Giovanni et Santa Vittoria, qui englobe ensemble vingt

fractions, appelées "villes". Contrairement à l’époque des comtes, sous la domination de Gênes, Sestri jouit d’une plus grande autonomie puisqu’elle est considérée base militaire, l’économie locale reprend pied en promouvant son commerce d’huile, de vin, de sel et de l’ardoise. D’un point de vue politique, les choses changent vers 1300 lorsque Sestri soutient les Gibelins plutôt que les Génois leurs rivaux. Sous Castruccio Castraccio, après l'armistice de 1327 avec Guelfi, fidèle au Pape comme il l’était pour les rivaux génois, le châtelain élit un vicaire choisi par lui-même afin d'assurer la paix à tous les habitants de la fraction opposée qui désirent rester à Sestri. A Guelfi et Ghibellini se succèdent les événements des Visconti.

Le Duc Visconti, Seigneur de Milan, convoitait Gênes, et pour concrétiser son plan occupa toute la Riviera Est, y compris Sigestri qui était gouvernée par Milan. Après divers événements, la ville demeure encore sous la protection des Visconti, entre 1454 et 1478 d’autres conflits survinrent entre les familles Sforza et Fieschi que ces dernières remportent.

En 1542 et 1607 Sestri subit de sanglantes invasions de la part des pirates sarrasins. Seulement sous la domination française en 1797, après un plébiscite, la République de Gênes sera transformée en République de la Ligurie laquelle changera la structure politique de l'aristocratie en une démocratie et à ce point Sestri Levante fait partie du premier canton, en tant que chef-lieu de la Juridiction de Gromolo et Vara. De 1803 Sestri devient le principal centre du septième canton du Gromolo de la Jurisprudence de Entella. Liée au Premier Empire français, du 13 Juin 1805 au 1814 la ville fait partie du département des Apennins. De 1859 à 1926 le territoire est inclu dans le III commandement de la circonscription de Chiavari, actuel département de Gênes. La fin de la première guerre mondiale apporte le chemin de fer et l’ouverture des tunnels Sant ‘Anna. Durant la seconde guerre mondiale, Sestri, occupée par les Allemands devient un avant-poste d'un commando SS. Ce sera seulement en 1944 après un terrible bombardement aérien Britannique que Sestri se libère. En 1973 elle fait partie de la communauté de montagne Val Petronio jusqu’à sa dissolution le 31 décembre 2008.

Sestri Levante, has always been, in the last 30 years, one of the best estate markets in Italy, the right place where to invest; the demonstration can be found if we look at the market trend as from 2011, practically when the global financial crisis started to date. Statistcs published on “Il Sole 24 Ore”, show our small town in the 14th position in Italy as regards average prices, 8.400,00 € per sqm.
