Bagni "Il Gabbiano" Chiavari

L’attività a conduzione familiare dello stabilimento balneare “Il Gabbiano” esiste a Chiavari sin dall’anno 1947!

Dall’anno 1969 l’attività si trova in località Preli, al centro del Golfo del Tigullio, detto anche “Golfo Marconi” per i primi esperimenti radio transoceanici qui effettuati proprio dal celebre scienziato.

Questo spazio, di grande pregio turistico e dotato di una invidiabile qualità paesaggistica, è delimitato a ponente dal promontorio del monte di Portofino e, a levante, da quello di Sestri Levante.

La spiaggia, protetta dalla scogliera antistante che è anche popolata da una pregevole varietà di fauna marina, è impreziosita, all’esterno della stessa barriera, da un percorso protetto delimitato da boe della lunghezza di un miglio marino, e riservato al nuoto amatoriale in acque libere. Alle spalle, a fare da cornice, la “Collina delle Grazie”. Verde e rigogliosa di pini marittimi e di lecci, offre sentieri percorribili in un ambiente salubre, di grande panoramicità spettacolare.

Le strutture dello stabilimento balneare, condotto oggi da Anna Maria Barozzi, hanno tutto il sapore del passato, con l’uso quasi integrale di legno e tela declinati nei turchesi e nei blu della tradizione marinara. Il servizio bar, la ristorazione ed il noleggio dei servizi di spiaggia, nei mesi da Giugno a Settembre, corredano la cordiale e disponibile accoglienza della gestione, anche con l’agevolazione di tariffe in abbonamento. E infine, davvero importante per chi in vacanza desidera rilassarsi anche facendo a meno dell’auto: il piazzale antistante i Bagni “Il Gabbiano” è raggiungibile anche con mezzi pubblici, collegati con il centro Città e la Stazione Ferroviaria.

“IL GABBIANO” a family run beach resort has been in activity in Chiavari since 1947!

It has been in the area of Preli, since 1969, in the centre of the Gulf of Tigullio, also called Marconi Gulf (for the first radio transoceanic experiments conducted here by the famous scientist).

This area of great tourist value, has an enviable quality landscape, is delimited on the west by the promontory of Portofino and on the east by the promontory of Sestri Levante.

The beach is protected by the cliff placed opposite, is also the set of a remarkable marine life and at the same time is embellished by the same cliff and by a protected path delimited by nautical mile buoys, reserved for amateur swimming in open waters.

Behind we find the “Collina delle Grazie”, a luxurian green hill with maritime pines and holm oaks, that offers accessible paths in a healthy environment with a spectacular landscape.

The facilities of the bathing resort, run by Anna Maria Barozzi, have the scent of the past, having used almost everywhere wood, blue and turquoise canvas that belongs to the maritime tradition.

The bar services, the restaurant, and the beach rental services from June to September, added to the kind and available welcome by the management and the benefits of subscription fees.

Just one last but important thing for those who wish to relax while on holiday and forget about the car: the square opposite the beach resort "Il Gabbiano", is reachable by public transport, connected to the town centre and the train station.

Chiavari, la città del buon vivere Chiavari è un centro costiero della Riviera di Levante di antica origine, con un importante nodo stradale già in epoca romana. E' una delle località del Tigullio più conosciute poiché offre una ricca offerta turistica, negozi, palazzi storici e di pregio, spiagge attrezzate, un entroterra affascinante ed un clima mite che la trasforma in meta di villeggiatura anche nei mesi più freddi. Il centro storico è caratterizzato dai portici medievali con archi e capitelli ancora oggi ben preservati: e’ il “Caruggio Dritto”, un percorso pedonale con un'estensione complessiva superiore al chilometro, dove la parola d'ordine è "Shopping!". Tanti infatti sono i negozi presenti; si tratta di un centro storico commerciale, dove la tradizione si rinnova da padre in figlio, dove ancora numerose sono le botteghe che proseguono un'attività intrapresa alla fine del 1800. Un vero outlet a cielo aperto, vivo e vivace, capace di ospitare più di 400 vetrine, dove la ricerca di un oggetto speciale è accompagnata da un ambiente unico e straordinariamente bello, dai portici che offrono rimparo sia dal sole che dalla pioggia, e da un'ottima scelta di bar ristoranti, locali.

Chiavari rappresenta inoltre un centro nautico considerevole nel Tigullio: il suo Porto Turistico costituisce una prestigiosa base diportistica nel sistema turistico del Tigullio, a poche miglia dalle perle del turismo nautico (Portofino, S. Margherita, Cinque Terre) e dalle mete più frequentate di Toscana, Sardegna, Corsica e Costa Azzurra. L'attuale struttura, che ospita oltre 400 imbarcazioni, ha aumentato la sua ricettività con l'ampliamento, denominato Calata Ovest, dove vi sono 151 ulteriori posti barca tra gli 8 ed i 24 mt, oltre a 107 posti auto e a 80 box auto coperti, offrendo tutti i servizi più moderni legati all’uso ed alla manutenzione della propria imbarcazione. Questa caratteristica si riflette nella forma della sua passeggiata a mare, tra le più ampie e avveniristiche rispetto a molte altre nel Tigullio, che con i nuovi lavori previsti nella zona a ponente sarà ulteriormente ampliata.

Chiavari, the town of good living Chiavari is a coastal town of ancient origins, located on the East Riviera, which had an important junction even in Roman times. It is one of the most popular places of Tigullio, as it offers many attractions for tourists, such as shops, historic and valuable buildings, equipped beaches and a charming inland with a mild climate, that's why it's a suitable destination even in the coldest months.

The historic centre can be distinguished by its Medioeval porticos with well preserved arches and capitals: "Caruggio Dritto" is a pedestrian road, longer than a kilometre, here "Shopping!" is a must.

There are so many shops; it's a historic trading centre, where traditions passed down from fathers to sons, several of these shops opened at the end of 1800.

A true lively outdoor outlet, with over 400 shops, where the search for a special object is accompanied by a unique and extraordinary place, with porticos that offer a shelter from both sun and rain, and an excellent variety of local bars and restaurants. Chiavari also represents an important nautical centre of the Tigullio Gulf: its Tourist Port is a notable pleasure boat centre, of the tourism system in Tigullio, it is located at a few miles from the nautical tourist perls of Portofino, S. Margherita and Cinque Terre and the most popular destinations in Tuscany, Sardinia, Corsica and the Côte d'Azur. The current nautical centre has over 400 boats and has increased its capacity, with the construction of Cala Ovest, where there are 151 additional moorings, for crafts between 8 and 24 metres, there are also over 107 parkings and 80 garages, that offer the most modern services for the use and maintenance of your our own boat.

Chiàvari, o Ciavai per chi la conosce in dialetto, con i suoi caratteristici portici da percorrere sotto il sole estivo, alla ricerca di qualche ristorantino tipico, è un importante centro storico e commerciale ed è il secondo comune più popoloso del comprensorio del Golfo del Tigullio, là dove il torrente Entella si getta nel Mar Ligure al termine della sua piana alluvionale. Vicinissima alle cave di Lavagna, ai borghi di Sestri, Riva e Moneglia che la fronteggiano a partire dal levante, e circondata dalla baia di Santa Margherita e Portofino ad ovest, è famosa oltretutto per il pescato di giornata e la lavorazione del pizzo macramè.

Viene collocata nella provincia di Genova, e rappresenta una perla del turismo ligure, testimoniata non solo dalla pittoresca passeggiata a mare e dal conseguimento della Bandiera Blu nel 2006, ma con i suoi reticoli di strade e sentieri, delineata sulla linea di un cielo limpido come un'importante punto di riferimento per arrivare ai boschi dell'entroterra chiavarese e alle bellezze della Val Graveglia.

Where we are

Chiavari, or "Ciavai", for who knows the dialect, with its characteristic arcades shading us from the summer sun, while we are looking for a small local restaurant, is an important historic and commercial town, and is the second most populous town in the Gulf of Tigullio, situated where the river Entella flows into the Ligurian Sea at the end of its flood plain.

It is very close to the quarries of Lavagna, to the towns of Sestri, Riva and Moneglia which are in front of it on the eastern side, and surrounded by the Bay of Santa Margherita and Portofino to the west. Above all, Chiaveri is famous for its daily fishing catch, and for macramĂŠ lace.

It is situated in the province of Genoa and represents a pearl of the Ligurian tourism, proved not only by its picturesque seafront promenade and by the achievement of the Blue Flag in 2006, but lalso by its road network and paths, outlined by a clear sky as an important landmark to reach the woods located inland of Chiavari and the beauties of Val Graveglia.

Via aerea: L’aeroporto di riferimento è il Cristoforo Colombo di Genova, a una trentina di minuti dal centro cittadino. In alternativa ci sono il Galileo Galilei di Pisa, a poco più di un’ora di distanza, e, se volete considerare il viaggio in treno per raggiungere il borgo, Malpensa e Linate a Milano.

Via terra: Da qualsiasi direzione proveniate, l’autostrada di riferimento è la A12 Livorno-Ventimiglia. Il casello di Chiavari si trova nel tratto compreso tra Genova e Sestri Levante, seguendo le indicazioni per Genova se si proviene da sud o dalla riviera emiliana, e per La Spezia-Livorno passando per la camionabile della Cisa da chi si immette dal nord.

Dal punto di vista ferroviario, Chiavari è molto ben servita, intersecandosi proprio nel tratto di competenza fra Roma e Milano. Partendo da quest’ultima, meta ideale per chi si avvale dei grandi voli internazionali, anche con lo scalo obbligato a Genova P.za Principe con l’Intercity, a prezzi veramente modici, si arriva a destinazione nel giro di un paio d’ore. Da Roma, con lo scalo a La Spezia, il tempo per arrivare è il doppio. In entrambi i casi, sono previste partenze da e per Chiavari della flotta Freccia di Trenitalia, senza scali e in tutta comodità sempre a prezzi di realizzo.

Via mare: Per i vostri spostamenti via mare, rivolgetevi al Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio, che propone oltretutto gite turistiche in battello sia nello stesso golfo che, durante tutta l‘alta stagione, verso le destinazioni più belle del Levante, compresi il Golfo dei Poeti e le Cinque Terre.

A walk along the centenary porticos of the Cittadella, the famous "Caruggio" with its ancient workshops and vibrant shops, only a few minutes separate us from the sea to enjoy the charm of a sunset over the water. H ow to Get There By air: the nearest airport is Cristoforo Colombo in Genoa, about 30 minutes drive from the centre of Chiavari. Alternatively there’s Galileo Galilei in Pisa, a little more than one hour away, and, if you want to make a train journey to reach the town, there are Malpensa and Linate airports in Milan.

By land: from whichever direction you are coming, the nearest motorway is the A12 Livorno- Ventimiglia.

The Chiavari exit is located between Genoa and Sestri Levanti, following the signs for Genoa if one is travelling from the south or from the Emilian Riviera; or for La Spezia – Livorno if travelling over the Cisa Pass from the north.

If travelling by train, Chiavari is very well positioned, lying midway between Rome and Milan. Leaving from an international airport in Milan, although you have to change at Genoa Piazza Principe, with a moderately priced intercity train, you can reach Genoa in a couple of hours. The journey from Rome, stopping at La Spezia, takes twice as long. From Milan or from Rome, there are very comfortable trains - Freccia di Trenitalia - from and to Chiavari, without changing, at a convenient price.

Воздушный транспорт: ближайшим является аэропорт Христофора Колумба в Генуе, примерно в тридцати минутах езды от центра Кьявари. Дорога до аэропорта имени Галилео Галилея в Пизе займет у вас чуть более часа езды. Чтобы добраться до аэропортов Мальпенса и Линате в Милане, удобнее воспользоваться поездом. Наземный транспорт: автомагистралью, ведущей к городу Кьявари, является А12 Ливорно-Вентимилья. Выезд с автомагистрали «Chiavari» находится между Генуей и Сестри Леванте. Ci si abitua facilmente alla tranquillità di Chiavari, e non ci si annoia mai ad attraversarla a piedi come in bici in particolare: la "ciclovia dell'ardesia", lunga circa 35 km e lungo il corso dell’Entella, permette addirittura un collegamento tra la costa e l’entroterra dal borgo di Lavagna fino alla località Bassi di Tribogna. Dal centro storico raccolto, sede delle famose botteghe medievali, come dalla stazione dei treni, si arriva inoltre ai numerosi bed&breakfast e agli affittacamere vista mare, tutti a prezzi modici. .La ATP, azienda trasporti provinciali, garantisce gli spostamenti in corriera verso tutte le località limitrofe e i comuni di Santa Margherita, Portofino e Recco, fino a Genova. Ad appena una cinquantina di chilometri ad est di Chiavari, il parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre interrompe i panorami pianeggianti della costa del Tigullio nelle gole scoscese fra terrazze e vigneti, raggiungibili ad un tiro di schioppo in treno come con qualsiasi rent a car. Ancora, a due passi troviamo la Val di Vara, celeberrima per i suoi antichi manieri medievali. Se invece preferite la mondanità, da Camogli a Bogliasco,di nuovo fino a Genova, si comincia con il tour delle case torri-genovesi fino a raggiungere il capoluogo con l’Acquario omonimo e le sue tappe culturali, riconosciuto patrimonio dell’umanità dall’Unesco per la sua eccellenza museale. Per apprezzare la fetta di mare intorno a Chiavari, le società che si occupano dei collegamenti sono il Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio, per le escursioni verso le mete turistiche delle cittadine più vicine; Il Consorzio Liguria Viamare e Sanremo Cetacei, che offre la possibilità di una gita per l’avvistamento delle balene, con partenza da Genova Porto Antico da Aprile a Ottobre e nel periodo estivo anche da Varazze, Savona, Loano, Alassio e Andora; Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti di cui abbiamo già trattato per le escursioni sulla riviera del levante nello specifico, in rotta verso le Cinque Terre e Portovenere, con scali giornalieri all’Isola della Palmaria.

H ow to Get Around

It is easy to get used to the tranquility of Chiavari, and one can never get bored on the “ciclovia d’ardesia” either on foot or by bike. It is 35 kms. long and follows the Antella, forming a connection between the coast at the town of Lavagna and the inland location of Bassi di Tribogna. From the mediaeval centre of Chiavari, or from the train station, one can reach numerous Bed & Breakfast houses, and numerous houses with with sea view rooms to rent, all reasonably priced. The ATP (the local bus company) garantees transport by bus to all the neibourhood, and to the areas of Santa Margherita, Portofino and Recco as far as Genoa. At about 50 kms. east of Chiavari, the national park of the Cinque Terre breaks the view of the flat coast of the gulf of Tigullio, with the steep terraced slopes and vine yards, easily reachable by train or hired car. Farther on we reach the Vara Valley, famous for its ancient mediaeval castles. If, on the other hand, you prefer something more worldly, from Camogli to Bogliasco and on to Genoa, you can start with a tour of the Genoese tower houses and go on to the Aquarium and visit other cultural treasures, famous heritage sites of UNESCO for the excellence of its museums. To appreciate the sea around Chiavari, the Servizio Marittimo do Tigullio runs boat trips to the coastal towns. The Consorzio Liguria Viamare e Sanremo Cetacei offers the possibility of whale watching trips, leaving from Porto Antico Genoa, from April to October, and in the summer also from Varazze, Savona, Loano, Alassio and Andora; Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti which we have already mentioned, offers trips to the levante coast, to the Cinque Terre and Portovenere, with daily trips to the Island of Palmaria.

Natura Di indubbia grazia e complementare ai panorami dei grandi boschi norvegesi, in un piccolo spazio vitale è racchiusa la Val d’Aveto, un’area naturale protetta riconosciuta nel 1995 e compresa nella circoscrizione di Santo Stefano d'Aveto, Rezzoaglio, Borzonasca e Mezzanego. Testimonianza della riuscita biodiversità dell’Appennino Ligure, connubio ideale tra le caratteristiche climatiche e geologiche della regione, regala incontri che facilmente potreste perdervi altrove. Qui, tra le cime basaltiche del monte Penna e del Pennino, dal quale si può godere di un panorama a 360° gradi del mar Tirreno fino alle Alpi Occidentali, sopravvivono i gatti selvatici e persino i lupi, mentre upupe, cuculi e ghiandaie, e non di rado maestosi aironi, fanno da indicatori alla salute delle acque e dei boschi.

Piante delicate come le ninfee colorano i laghetti della foresta delle Lame, nel cuore del parco, in un paesaggio che si snoda tra i 1600 e 1800 metri di altitudine. Le valli, nella ormai famosa unione fra mare e montagna, subiscono la stessa gradevole struttura verdeggiante fino al Parco regionale di Portofino, compreso tra i comuni di Camogli e Santa Margherita Ligure, ricco della rigogliosa macchia mediterranea.

E’ palese che da Chiavari per tutto il Tigullio, l’escursionista esperto possa trovare un mondo su misura, fra un agriturismo e un villaggio fortificato, un maneggio e una gita in barca a vela. Without a doubt, similar to the views of great Norwegian forests, in a much smaller space lies the Val d’Aveto, a nature reserve recognized in 1995, in the localities of Santo Stefano D’Aveto, Rezzoaglio, Borzonasca, and Mezzanego. Proof of the biodiversity of the Ligurian Appenines, the ideal union between the climate and the geology of the region, can give experiences that one could easily miss in other places. Here in the basaltic peaks of Penna and Pennino, from where one can enjoy a view of 360° from the Tirrenian sea to the Western Alps, wild cats and wolves thrive, while hoopoes, cuckus and rollers and often majestic herons, assure us of the quality of the uncontaminated water and woods.

Un po’ di storia

Le prime fonti certe su insediamenti stabili nella zona di Chiavari sono datate al VIII secolo a.C., testimoniate dai resti funebri e dai monili in ferro, oro e bronzo della necropoli, conservati al museo Archeologico.

Durante l’epoca romana, la zona era cara all’Impero per la sua felice posizione strategica, sfruttata come punto di scambio e di frontiera.

Conosciuta col nome di Clavarium, “chiave delle valli”, situata infatti allo sbocco delle quattro valli Val Fontanabuona, Val Sturla, Val Graveglia e Val d'Aveto, alcuni documenti la citano come Tigullia, altri erroneamente come Segesta, nome che in realtà si riferisce a Sestri Levante.

Di quel periodo non c’è molto da prendere in analisi, a parte il prematuro corteggiamento dell’uomo verso i suoi territori. E’ solo successivamente, precedentemente all’anno mille, quando il borgo era attraversato dall’antica strada litoranea diretta dal Levante e al Ponente ligure, che cominciano

a svilupparsi gli insediamenti che precorrono l’abitato moderno.

Genova, che si sta velocemente espandendo, trova allora forti resistenze per guadagnarsi il rispetto dei cittadini della primigenia Chiavari, fedele ai Conti di Lavagna.

Nel 1167 i consoli genovesi cercano di trarre quel favore con l’erezione del Castello, e nel 1178, sulla scia del persistere del carisma dei conti, ecco che delineano il borgo vero e proprio come più o meno lo conosciamo oggi, secondo un un preciso piano urbanistico. Nascono i carrugi e i portici che percorrono le case. Con il favore di Genova, che la perde per mano dei Fieschi e la riguadagna solo nel 1332, Chiavari si immette in una sfavillante età dell'oro, e nel corso del XVIII secolo, il grado di stabilità economica viene accresciuto e controllato con discrezione da una via via sempre più elitaria classe borghese.

The first certain traces of settlement in the area of Chiavari go back to the 8th century b.c. They are findings of iron, gold and bronze neclaces from the burial sites, and are kept in the archeological museum.

During the Roman period, the area was prized by the empire for its good strategic position and used as a trading area and a border point. Known by the name of Clavarium, which means “key of the valleys”, it is in fact situated at the ends of the four valleys: Val Fontanabuona, Val Sturla, Val Graveglia and Val d’Aveto. Some documents cite it as Tigullia, others mistakenly as Segesta, a name that really refers to Sestri Levante. From that period there isn’t much to analyze, except the first relationship of man with his territory. It is only later, before the end of the first millennium, when the settlement was crossed by an ancient road, running from the east to the west of Liguria, that the settlements that precede the modern town, began to develop.

Genoa, which was expanding quickly, met with great resistance from the citizens of this first Chiavari, who were faithful to the Counts of Lavagna. In 1167 the Genoese consuls tried to attract allegiance by building of the castle, and in 1178, seeing that the attraction of the Counts persisted, laid the foundations of the town itself, more or less as we know it today, according to a precise urban plan. The streets and arcades, which run in front of the houses, took shape. With the help of Genoa, which lost Chiavari on account of the Fischi, and only to get it back in 1332, Chiavari entered a brilliant golden age, and in the course of the XV111 century, the degree of economic stability was increased and controlled with discretion, by an ever more elite middle class. It was to be this class of fine thinkers, stimulated by illuminist and revival ideas who would find the fertile ground to let Chiavari grow spiritually,and also structurally, building aristocratic houses in the newest and best architectural styles.

After the sad but fortunately short period of plague, the city lends itself to follow Ligurian affairs under the Napoleonic campaigns, and in the 1800s finds itself annexed to the first French Empire and its extensive territory beyond the Appenines. Looked after, silenced but always at the centre of attention, both at the dissolution of the Ligurian republics, and under the following Kingdom of Sardinia, from 1900 onwards another point in its favour attracts the aristocratic tourism, in a mirrored destiny in the levante of La Spezia: the sea, the clean beaches and the healthy air, attract wealthy tourists for thalassotherapy. The flourishing commerce from handicrafts to the daily fishing catch are still enjoyed under the Gothic arches of the arcades and the remaining mediaeval shops. In the sparkling atmosphere of Caffe Defilla, young Genoese graduates still meet today as they did during the splendid age of the quiet town of fishermen. These things are still the spirit of Chiavari.

La Liguria, soprattutto nell’area del Tigullio, è la patria della focaccia.

Quella tipica della zona è la superstar col formaggio di Recco, conosciuto come prescinseua, ma non disperate che nessuna delle varianti fornite, alle acciughe coi pomodori salati, con la cipolla o farcita degli ingredienti più ghiotti, vi lascerà delusi.

Per i break fra un bagno e l’altro, inimitabile è la farinata, una sorta di sottile testo salato fatto di ceci, acqua, olio e cotta al forno in una teglia di rame.

Tipica e per quanto ci si sforzi nelle altre regioni, inimitabile altrove, la genovesissima torta pasqualina che farà da piatto unico alle vostre portate, precorritrice della festa e della primavera che raccontano i suoi ingredienti: uova, bietole, carciofi di Albenga, piselli, maggiorana, borragine ed erbe dell’orto, dentro strati fragranti, la sfida di tutte le casalinghe del circondario.

Ma, oltre gli stuzzichini e le torte salate, Chiavari è un mondo più ricco, in cucina, vicino al concetto di piatti di riciclo tipico dei liguri, rappresentati dalle zuppe ricche di odori con legumi (famosa la mesciua), o i ripieni delle carni arricchiti con maggiorana, timo e parmigiano (chiedete di assaggiare la cima, assolutamente), eppure notevolmente più raffinato.

Complice è forse il pesce, che, servito in ristoranti di lusso tanto quanto nell’osteria dell’angolo, sembra avvertire i benefici di un clima che lo rende assai più prelibato. Il “pesce azzurro”, le acciughe crude o marinate, il tonno appena scottato, i crostacei, ottimi gli scampi in qualsiasi ricetta proposta, i tagliolini con l’aragosta o lo stoccafisso in umido, il baccalà in agliata, sono piatti assolutamente da provare.

L’insalata di polpo, i moscardini macchiati col sugo, le cozze, che qui vengono chiamate muscoli, ripiene col pan grattato o bollite, i guazzetti di scorfano e pesce di fondale, sono tutti pezzi di storia che ogni ristorante personalizza e arricchisce, senza dimenticare il sapore tipico e genuino della tradizione locale.

Luoghi d’interesse Chiavari, nonostante il boom del turismo, è un paese felicemente sposato alla pesca e all’artigianato, attività che l’hanno aiutato a crescere molto prima: tra le sue produzioni particolari ci sono le cosiddette sedie “campanino” e i bellissimi pizzi “macramè” di cui già vi abbiamo accennato.

In Via Martiri della Liberazione, altrimenti chiamata “caruggio dritto”, riscoprirete cosa significa passeggiare per il centro storico di Chiavari, magari dopo una sosta per fare le foto sul bel Lungomare, vera e propria terrazza fiorita sul Golfo del Tigullio e su Portofino, il cui culmine è la mole della Colonia Fara.

E’ proprio lì che comincia l’avventura tra i colori, i suoni e gli odori della comunità all’epoca del medioevo… Chiavari ha infatti conservato quell’impronta da crocevia marinaro, di crocicchio di commerci, e assieme anche i suoi classici portici, luogo d’elezione dei mercatini dell’Antiquariato e del Sapore, ma vedremo meglio in seguito di loro.

Da Via Martiri le strade si sviluppano tutte dritte, intersecandosi solo ad angolo retto: i carruggi corrono in mezzo a due file continue di portici, sostenuti da colonne di stampo gotico, un’omaggio alle corti genovesi del duecento che è sopravvissuto.

sua ricchezza ci sono i palazzi, su tutti quello dei Portici Neri, il Palazzo Torriglia, sede della Pinacoteca Civica, e il Palazzo Rocca, costruito da Bartolomeo Bianco nel seicento e casa sia dell’orto botanico con le strabilianti serre delle orchidee, che del Museo Archeologico, con i suoi reperti della necropoli preromana rinvenuta in Viale Millo.

Tra gli edifici di maggiore interesse ritroviamo universalmente le chiese: ad emblema del maestoso stile classico che domina su Chiavari, c’è il Santuario di Nostra Signora dell’Orto, eretto dopo la miracolosa apparizione della Vergine Maria il 2 luglio 1610. La cattedrale è il principale spazio di culto cattolico della città, nonché ufficio della diocesi e santuario mariano.

La facciata, sorretta da colonne corinzie, comprende cinque riquadri marmorei a bassorilievo raffiguranti episodi della vita della Vergine, che si ricollegano agli affreschi interni e alle opere d’arte degli scultori del calibro di Borzone, Coppola e Pogliaghi.

La struttura è un mirabile esempio di architettura neoclassica, un tripudio di marmi bianchi e buona suddivisione delle geometrie.

Castello è il tramonto: costruito tra il 1146 e il 1147, uno dei primi eretti nel Tigullio, mantiene parti della cinta muraria lungo il percorso. Chiavari, notwithstanding the tourist boom, is a town happily married to fishing and handicrafts, activities which have helped it to grow quickly. Among its particular products are the “campanino” chairs and the beautiful macramè lace which we have already mentioned.

In Via Martiri della Liberazione, also known as “Strait Street” you will discover what is meant by going for a walk in the ancient centre of Chiavari, perhaps after a break taking photos on the beautiful sea front, a real flowering terrace on the Gulf of Tigullio and Portofino, and on to the point of the Colonia Fara. It is there that the adventure with colours starts, the sounds and the smells of the mediaeval community…. Chiavari has in fact preserved that footprint of a seafaring crossroads, a trading point, and together with its classical arcades, its original places of antique fairs and food fairs, but later on we shall come back to them.

From Via Martiri, all the roads continue strait, intersecting at right angles. The streets run between arcades, continuous on both sides, sustained by gothic style columns, surviving and recalling the 13th century Genoese court.

Another recollection of the past, and of its richness, we find in the buildings, all those of Portici Neri, The Palazzo Torriglia, home of the civic art gallery, and Palazzo Rocca, built by Bartolomeo Bianco in the seventeenth century and home of the botanic garden with its amazing glass houses of orchids, and the archeological museum, with its findings from the pre-roman burial site found at Villa Millo.

Among the buildings of most interest, we always find churches; emblems of the majestic stile that dominates Chiavari, there is the “Santuario del Nostra Signora dell’Orto “, built after the miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary on 2nd July 1610. The cathedral is the focus of Catholicism in the town, being the centre for the diocese and marian sanctuary. The facade, supported by Corinthian

columns, includes 5 marble bas-relief works of art showing episodes in the life of the Virgin, which are related to the frescoes inside and to the works of sculptors of the caliber of Borzone Coppola and Pogliaghi.

The building is an excellent example of neoclassical architecture, an exultation of white marble and good geometric devisions. Its floor plan is in the shape of a latin cross and has two rows of arches. Once inside, it is worth admiring two large stained – glass windows in the apse, showing Saint Sebastian and Saint Rocco, created in 1928

by Costante Panigati, famous for having been the Artistic Director of the Luigi Fontana & Co. of Milan.

Equally attractive is the church of Saint John the Baptist in a small square named after the ancient town; the monastery of Clarisse- near the auditorium which was the church of Saint Francis- with the altar dedicated to Saint Anna, and the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell’ Olivo in Bacezza along the road called Aurelia. This sanctuary is also wholely built in marble and famous for its Tamburini church organ installed in 1936.

Going up the “Salita”, the best time to admire the impressive castle is at sunset.

It was built between 1146 and 1147, one of the first castles built in the Tigullio, and forms part of the city wall. There are two well preserved water cisterns in front of the tower, the wall of the old citadel and the external four sided structure of the fortifation which seems even now to protect the city from barbaric pirates.

Towards the end of the fifties, the location of a pre-Roman burial site was found and in the 1980s the findings were officially put on display in the then archeological museum for the pre historical finds of the Tigullio. Today it is the archeological museum of Chiavari, housed in the prestigious Palazzo Rocca.

A proposito degli incontri religiosi, si celebra Sant'Antonio abate nella Fiera che si tiene la domenica più vicina al 17 gennaio. Fiera e festa patronale di Nostra Signora dell'Orto, il 2 e il 3 luglio, con un magnifico spettacolo pirotecnico, e la festa di Nostra Signora della Salute nel quartiere Ri Basso l'ultimo fine settimana di luglio.

To welcome you during your stay you will find bathing establishments with every possible comfort for a daily fee, and also free beaches. These lie beneath the long promenade at the sea. The sports which this seaside area offers include surfing and deep-sea diving. For subaqua and diving courses there are 4 centres at Lavagna alone; there is also sailing and even trips on catamarans. In nearby Rapallo there are excellent hotels and a harbor with more than 350 moorings. For the ladies, above all in the area of Sestri and Santa Margherita there are boutiques with the best designer names. The whole of Tigullio, from May to August celebrates the “Paglio Marinaro” or marine races which, with the beginning of the summer, involves the canoeing clubs of the different neighbourhoods ,which prepare with enthusiasm for the race which has taken place every year since 1974. The fair of Saint Antony and the agricultural fair take place in the centre of the town on Saturdays and Sundays around17th January, attracting stall holders of every kind and for every occasion. You mustn’t miss the Carnival, with numerous days of entertainment, occasions for children, dances, stands and “breaking the Pentolaccia”, an event which takes place in Piazza Matteotti.

In spring time the events not to miss are Chiavari in Flower, a market which envolves all the streets of the ancient town in May: the Rivarola Vintage, a public event with a 60s theme taking place in Via Rivarola in collaboration with the association Images 360, the market Chiavari Damare in Roma square, on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.

The second weekend of each month there is the antiques market, which attracts hoards of visitors from all Liguria; and the market of Tastes and Traditions, the last weekend of each month in Via Rivarola.

As far as religious holidays, there is the fair of Sant’Antonio Abate is held on the Sunday nearest to 17th January, and the fair of Nostra Signora dell’Orto on the 2nd and 3rd of July.

We can also remember the Premium Classicum Clavarense, a prize for the best student of the year in classical studies.

It has a climate among the best in the whole of Liguria, protected from the north east Tramontana wind and the cold air from the Appennines. The Gulf of Tigullio, conventionally formed by Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo, Zoagli, Chiavari, Lavagna and Sestri Levante, encircles the area of sea, in front of our small town of fishermen and trades people. It is useless to sing the praises of a semi circle of ancient towns, one older than the next. From the inland hills, following the many paths, one comes down to touch the sea bed of the clean Ligurian sea. Nearby, following the Maestral wind, the Cinque Terra, La Spezia and the Lunigiana form an amphitheatre to the Tuscan coast and the night life of Versilia, while towards Genoa the hills of Savona and the border with the Cost Azzura after Ventimilia, open the road to the marvelous lavander colour of France. What more could anybody want from what began as a pale road among mule paths, an outpost of centurians?

Nature reserves, good food, fairs and events of every kind become indistinguishable from ancient maritime traditions, and crumbling fishermens’ villages, long ago attatcked by pirates, today are avantgarde hotels and residences. Chiavari is the ideal place.
