ella Liguria di Levante, in Italia, esiste un territorio unico, sospeso tra cielo e mare, a prima vista indomito, che lascia esterrefatti e che incanta da sempre… secondo il senso più letterale del termine, perché non trova eguali nel mondo.

Sviluppatosi sull’estrema lingua orientale della regione ligure, coperto da un areale verde e rigoglioso e in posizione dominante sul mare, si conosce e definisce con il nome di “Cinque Terre”.

Più da vicino, percorrendo i sentieri tra il mirto e il corbezzolo del litorale, si comprende che i borghi che lo compongono si forgiano sulla rotta seguita dai pirati saraceni, su antichi costruttori di muretti a secco, su artigiani e primitivi cacciatori e pescatori i quali hanno protetto e incentivato un territorio a ridosso di cinque piccoli villaggi.

Questi villaggi, partendo dal capoluogo di Provincia, ovvero La Spezia, e seguendo le indicazioni per Genova, risultano essere: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza e Monterosso al Mare.

Ciascuno di loro, pur nelle comuni storia e tradizioni, mantiene un vissuto assolutamente personale; ognuno, dunque, uguale ai borghi in fratellanza ma sempre diverso, per peculiarità e personalità.

Basti pensare che Monterosso al Mare è una rinomata località balneare, mentre Corniglia, ad esempio, vive di una realtà intima e collinare. O ancora, se si risalgono le vie ripide di Riomaggiore, silenziosa eppure così grande nella sua storia più o meno recente, non si vivono le stesse emozioni che si avvertono a Manarola che, pur sviluppatasi lungo un percorso simile, sembra essere uscita dritta dall’apparato roccioso dell’Appennino Ligure, il custode e l’artefice di questi ambienti. Così come Vernazza risplende nella sua unicità tra i Borghi più Belli d’Italia.

Quindi, nonostante la geografia fisica delle Cinque Terre possa trarre in inganno, nonostante alcune delle “Terre” possano apparentemente scoraggiare i meno avventurosi, non saranno certo i percorsi impervi che impediranno a chi vuole disporre il proprio cuore ad attingere a tanta bellezza, visitandole e vivendole come esse meritano.

Gran parte del successo, le Cinque Terre, lo devono proprio al percorso capillare di sentieri che ricopre il versante marino, snodato per oltre 120 chilometri. Tanto è il

n the eastern part of Liguria, there is a unique and unbowed territory, hang between the sky and the sea that will leave you astonished, it has always enchanted with its charm, believe me there are no other places like this in the world. It is located on the eastern coast of Liguria, with a lush vegetation and overlooking the sea, known as "Cinque Terre".

If we take a closer look, and go along the trails we can find myrtle bushes and the typical strawberry trees of the coast, it is clear that the villages were placed on the route followed by Saracen pirates, on ancient dry stone walls, created by craftsmen, primitive hunters and fishermen who have protected and encouraged a territory close to five small villages.

Starting our trip from the municipality of La Spezia and following the directions to reach Genoa, we find the following villages Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare.

Each village has a common history and traditions, but maintains particular differences and personality. For example Monterosso is by the sea, instead Corniglia is located on a cosy hill, if we walk along the steep and quiet alleys in Riomaggiore, with its important past and recent history, we don't feel the same emotions as when we are in Manarola, althought they are both shaped in a similar way, the latter looks as if it had been carved from Ligurian rocks of the Appenine, the guardian and mastermind of this environment, Vernazza stands out for its uniqueness among the most beautiful Italian hamlets.

Despite the fact that the geography of the Cinque Terre might deceive you and that could discourage the most adventurous hikers the difficult paths won't stop those who wish to fill their hearts with such beauties, visiting and living these villages as they deserve.

Great part of the success of the Cinque Terre is due to the network of trails, that covers an area of 120 kilometres along the coast. A huge heritage of trails, slopes, landscapes and wonderful glimpes, that have always enchanted and fascinated famous people like Dante Alighieri, Boccaccio, Vincenzo Cardarelli, perhaps the most well known is the poet Eugenio Montale, nobel prize in literature in 1975, who was

loro patrimonio, in via di saliscendi, vedute panoramiche e scorci, che ha coinvolto nel suo vortice di emozioni personaggi famosi e di spicco: si pensi a Dante Alighieri, Boccaccio, Vincenzo Cardarelli, anche se il più noto resta Eugenio Montale, premio Nobel per letteratura nel 1975, grande conoscitore degli ambienti rocciosi di Monterosso.

Un bagaglio di ambienti simili comune anche agli altri quattro borghi: di fatto i sentieri a picco sul mare hanno rappresentato le uniche vie di collegamento, sia da un villaggio all’altro, sia con l’entroterra e l’areale spezzino, lasciando intatto il patrimonio culturale.

Le Cinque Terre, restano comunque impresse nella mente dei visitatori anche in virtù delle coloratissime, nonché particolari, case-torri incuneate in salita su per il solco vallivo, compatte a difesa di ogni porticciolo. Loggiati e portali scolpiti nella pietra tipica, spesso ardesia, che rivediamo, assieme alle ripe scoscese, anche nei dipinti di Telemaco Signorini.

Ma quale è, per sommi capi, il patrimonio delle Cinque Terre?

Lo si riassume in tre parole: radici, cucina e indipendenza.

Davanti al promontorio di Portovenere, borgo confinante, sono stati rinvenuti i resti più antichi che testimoniano il passaggio umano nella zona del Golfo dei Poeti e delle Cinque Terre e, in particolare, addentro la Grotta dei Colombi, all'isola Palmaria che, durante il paleolitico, era unita alla terra ferma. Proprio lì, i manufatti (armi e arnesi da lavoro), assieme ai resti di scheletri molto ben conservati, lasciano dedurre quanto la zona fosse già ospitale per l’uomo cacciatore, malgrado le tribolazioni dell’età della pietra, anche per via di un ambiente boschivo abbastanza ricco di selvaggina, fonte primaria di risorse. Presenti inoltre dei menhir, ritrovati nella fascia di Campiglia-Tramonti, ritenuti i precursori delle statue stele dell’areale di Lunigiana in Toscana.

In periodo pre-romano, le tribù liguri rappresentarono un forte ostacolo alla romanizzazione del territorio, forti dell’indipendenza: tale fatto spiega perché le attività dei colonizzatori si concentrarono nell’"Agro Lunense", testimoniate su tutte dalla fondazione di Luni. L'assetto sociale e la giurisdizione del territorio, quasi governato sotto rigida autarchia quest’ultimo, perdureranno fino all'alto Medioevo, dopodiché spiccherà la struttura più confacente ai vescovati.

Volendo fare luce, in tema di radici, la storia ci dice che i primi nuclei da borgata propriamente detti siano nati sotto l’egida di Monterosso e Vernazza, seguiti dagli altri solo più tardi, con l’ausilio della potenza 14 Cinque Terre icons

The other four villages have a common environtment, the trails overlooking the sea, are the only roads that connect one village to another, to the inland and the province of La Spezia, leaving its cultural heritage untouched.

The Cinque Terre will remain in the memory of the visitors, also for the typical coloured tower houses, built close to one another, on the slopes of the valley to defend each small bay. Loggias and carved stone portals, with the typical limestone that we also see on the steep slopes, and in Telemaco Signorini's paintings.

So, briefly which is the heritage of the Cinque Terre?

We can simply use three words: roots, cuisine and independance.

The oldest remains of the area, were found in front of the promontory of Portovenere, a nearby village, they prove that men lived in the Gulf of Poets and in the Cinque Terre during the Paleolithic, in particular inside Grotta dei Colombi, on Palmaria island, that was in fact, in that period, attached to the mainland. Inside the grotto there are weapons and work tools, as well as some well preserved bones, we presume that this area was suitable for hunters, despite the difficulties of the stone age, and the wooded environment quite rich in game, the main resource for men.

There are also some menhirs in the area of Campiglia-Tramonti, considered as the first type of art, well before the stele statues of Lunigiana, inTuscany.

In the pre-roman period, the proud and independent Ligurian tribes represented an obstacle to the expansion of the Roman empire in the territory, that is why the colonizers concentrated their activities in the area of Agro Lunensense, as we can see in remains of Luni. The social layout and the jurisdiction of the territory, ruled by the strict autarchy lasted till early Middle Ages, then the bishops took the power.

If we want to shed light about the historic roots of the area, we must say that the first inhabitants lived Monterosso and Vernazza, then others followed thanks to the military and political power of Genoa.

The fortresses date back to the sixteenth century, built to contrast the attacks of the Turks and Saracen pirates, when the raids stopped, the Cinque Terre went under the rule of the powerful families Carpena, Da Passano and finally the Fieschi family.

The area went under the “Supreme” Genoa in 1276. A fruitful trade network, especially of farm products, enriched the local economy, thanks also to the terraced

Al XVI secolo risalgono le massicce fortificazioni, volute per contrastare gli attacchi dei predoni turchi e saraceni, e, quando la loro minaccia cessò, le Cinque Terre subirono le dominazioni dei Càrpena, dei Da Passàno e infine i Fieschi. Ufficialmente, passeranno sotto la potenza della “Suprema” nel 1276.

Una proficua rete di scambi, soprattutto di prodotti agricoli, sarà caratteristica dell’economia, data da una nuova estensione dei terrazzamenti coltivati, ma soprattutto nei paesi di Monterosso e Vernazza si aggiungeranno le punte di spicco di pesca e commercio via mare, e in maggior misura dell’allevamento dei bachi da seta, poiché ricche in boschetti di gelso. Importanza non da poco avranno le coltivazioni degli agrumi, in prevalenza limoni e cedri. Si rendono indispensabili, a questo punto, alcuni cenni sulle singole località.L'origine (databile) di Monterosso al mare risale ancora all’espansione della Roma Repubblicana, ma si dice che gli abitanti discendano da quelli del mitico villaggio di Albareto. Verso la metà del 1200, dopo alterne lotte tra la Repubblica Marinara di Pisa e quella di Genova, Monterosso si legherà alla seconda potenza, sotto cui crescerà e svilupperà l’attività marinara, così come la coltivazione del grano e quella delle vigne, protette a valle dai muretti a secco. In tempi più recenti, il paese si divide in due zone: quella affacciata sul mare e una, più antica, risalita lungo la collina di San Cristoforo, con le fortificazioni. Prendendo il sole nel centro storico, tra i "carrugi", è facile fermarsi a bere un bicchiere di "Sciacchetrà" in qualche cantina, oppure fare una passeggiata fino all'ex Convento dei Frati Cappuccini, da cui si gode un panorama invidiabile.

Monterosso al mare, oggigiorno, è una delle più apprezzate località balneari estive della Riviera Ligure di Levante, ed è molto orgogliosa della pesca delle sue acciughe, cui dedica la "Sagra dell'acciuga fresca", a giugno.

Riguardo Vernazza, toponimo che attribuiamo alla famiglia Vulnetia, sino al Mille la popolazione si terrà lontana dal mare e dunque il borgo tutto resterà relegato sulle alture del Reggio. Dominato dai Da Passano, passando poi per i Ponzò e i Fieschi, anch’esso crescerà accudito dalla madrina Genova. Il piccolo villaggio, certe volte, rimane in secondo piano, ma nulla hanno da meno i terrazzamenti e le bellezze storico-artistiche presenti all'interno della cinta di case che lo hanno caratterizzato tra i Borghi più Belli d’Italia. Nowadays Monterosso al Mare, is one of the most appreciated seaside places of the Eastern Ligurian Riviera, so proud of its anchovy daily catch, that a fair is organized every year in June, it is called “Sagra dell'Acciuga Fresca” the Fair of fresh anchovy.

The name Vernazza probably comes from the family Vulnetia, till year 1000 its inhabitants lived far from the sea, on the hills, ruled by the Da Passano family, then by the Ponzò and Fieschi families, it increased its powers as it was looked after by its godmother Genoa. This small village is sometimes put on the back burner, but its terraced hills and cultural-historic beauties have nothing to envy to the other villages, for example its coloured houses, built one next to another look like city walls. The village has been inclued in the list of most beautiful villages in Italy.

Its endless carrugi and the steep steps that lead to the bay, the church of Saint Margherita, overlooking the sea, well represent the pionerist spirit of its inhabitants.

Cornelius, a Roman settler was the owner of some well known vineyards, gave the name to the village of Corniglia, re-proposing its Roman origins. Some amphoras of the gentle man were found in Pompeii.

Vernazza in Piazza Marconi, il salotto delle Cinque Terre, si trova la Trattoria Gianni Franzi. Già "Trattoria della Stella" più di mezzo secolo fa, il locale fu rilevato da Gianni Viacava negli anni '60. Da allora è diventato una tappa d'obbligo per chiunque voglia degustare la cucina tipica di questi luoghi.

Le prime camere furono realizzate verso la fine degli anni '60, furono ricavate da vecchie abitazioni già esistenti nel centro storico del paese. Dal 1997 sono state realizzate altre stanze in un vecchio palazzo adiacente al primo, sulla scogliera.

Quasi tutte le camere godono di una splendida vista sul golfo delle Cinque Terre.

Formerly known as the "Trattoria Della Stella" more than half a century ago, the restaurant was purchased by Gianni Viacava in the 1960's. From then on it became known as the obbligatory stop for those who want to taste the typical cuisine of the Cinque Terre and the restaurant aficionados of Liguria.

lo spirito pionieristico degli abitanti.

Cornelius, un colono romano e proprietario vigneti molto rinomati, ha dato il nome a Corniglia, riproponendone le origini romane. Alcune anfore del gentile signore sono state trovate a Pompei. Fantastico l’entroterra, apprezzata la ricca biodiversità marina del fondale e rinomati i limoni, protagonisti di granite e indimenticabili pomeriggi in piazzetta. I bagni migliori si possono fare alle spiagge di Guvano, posizionate sotto un ampio costone roccioso e storiche mete dei naturisti di tutto il mondo.

Nonostante abbia origini più antiche, Manarola è frazione del Comune di Riomaggiore, e similmente, come per le case, in parte arroccate su un pittoresco sperone di roccia finito in bocca al mare, ne condivide l’economia basata sulla produzione di vino e olio d’oliva. Il nome, secondo alcuni studiosi, deriva da un tempio dedicato alle divinità dei Mani, mentre altri sono convinti possa suggerire qualcosa sulle strutture dei mulini ad acqua, tipiche della località.

Solo con l’intervento di Genova, alla quale va il merito di aver reso sicuri i mari, gli abitanti di Riomaggiore scenderanno a valle, intorno all'anno Mille, per dare origine al borgo e nello specifico alla marina. Voci associano la sua fondazione, nella soprastante località di Montenero, ad opera di un gruppo di profughi greci. Aggrappato alla roccia, tra ringhiere e porticati ed esteso lungo un asse verticale dove ripide scalette portano ai terrazzamenti, con gli anni il nuovo abitato lascerà le colline e il lavoro nei campi e, malgrado la viticoltura abbia sempre un ruolo di traino, l’Area Naturale sviluppata tra il Promontorio di Punta Mesco a ponente e il Capo di Montenero a levante tutt’oggi, diventerà meta ambita da turisti di ogni nazionalità ed estrazione. Interessante parentesi va aperta sul dialetto riomaggiorese, conosciuto per avere particolarità così uniche da distinguersi anche dai dialetti parlati nei comuni e nei borghi limitrofi.

Al tempo delle grandi rivoluzioni scientifiche seicentesche, le Cinque Terre conoscono un breve declino, ma il periodo verrà invertito già nel XIX secolo, complice la costruzione dell’Arsenale militare della Spezia e la rivalutazione di un territorio impropriamente relegato a sola presenza scenica, con la costruzione della linea ferroviaria tra Genova e il capoluogo, alle soglie del Novecento: è allora al treno che si dovrà un rapido sviluppo del turismo, soprattutto balneare, il quale a sua volta riporterà in auge tutto quello che gravita intorno a storia, natura, gastronomia e tradizioni antichissime.

The inland is an amazing place, but also the rich marine biodiversity of the seabed, or its scented lemons, are well appreciated, they are used for making slushs and spend unforgettable afternoons in the square.

The best places for swimming are the beaches in Guvano, just under a wide rocky ridge, a well known destinations for nudists from all over the world.

Reaching Corniglia takes its time, if you want to go on foot, from the train station or the beach, you need good legs to go up the 377 steep “Lardarina”steps, if you want to avoid the carriage way.

Even if Manarola has more ancient origins, its area belongs to the municipaly of Riomaggiore, its houses are partially built on a pictoresque spur, touched by the fresh sea, its economy is based on the production of wine and olive oil. According to some academics the name Manarola, comes from a temple devoted to the gods Mani, while others are convinced that it might mention the structure of water windmills, typical of this area.

Genoa made the area safe, and for this reason the inhabitants left the hills and moved to the valley in year 1000, giving birth to the hamlet by the seafront, there are rumors about the possibility that some Greek refugees created the inhabited the area of Montenero.

Clinged to the rocks, with railings and porticos, stretched on a straight axis where steep steps lead to terraced hills, in years the inhabitants lefts the hills and the hard work in the fields, even if viticulture has had a main role, the Natural Area developed between the Promontory of Punta Mesco on the west and Capo di Montenero on the east, it has become a popular tourist destination for all kind of tourists from all over the world.

We should mention the dialect spoken in Riomaggiore, it is known for its peculiar words, uncommon in this area, and not spoken in the nearby hamlets.

At the time of the great scientific discoveries in the seventeenth century the Cinque Terre had a short downfall, but in the nineteenth century, the situation changed radically, thanks to the construction of the military arsenal of La Spezia, and especially the constuction of the railway line Genoa-La Spezia at the beginning of the twenthieth century, which helped the development of tourism, particulary in the seaside areas, it also incourouged the discovery of all the features of this territory, its history, nature, food and wine and ancient traditions.

mbrosi cascinali, boschi di castagno e pinete secolari, aziende vinicole, frantoi, uva vermentino e colture freschissime, sono i tratti distintivi delle Cinque Terre se le riproponiamo in una cartolina d’autore con vista panoramica dall’alto. Dal basso invece, cernie occhiute, gorgonie, ambienti pelagici e gozzi beccheggianti colmano le discrepanze.

Come suggerisce la geografia del luogo, amalgama ideale tra una delle coste italiane più apprezzate e pulite e sentieri che serpeggiano oltre i 100 mt s.l.m., considerati piena montagna, le Cinque Terre non hanno problemi a dar sfoggio di uno dei connubi più riusciti, e con ecosistemi talvolta unici, in tema di interazione uomo-natura e aspetti paesaggistici tipici.

L’ambiente antropico, di per sé, non ha alterato la natura circostante, e l’esigua striscia di terra compresa fra il mare e la cresta che la separa dalla retrostante Val di Vara e dal Golfo della Spezia, vale al comprensorio il suo posto quale uno dei Patrimoni dell'Umanità dell'Unesco. Da Riomaggiore a Monterosso salvo brevi interruzioni, la scogliera è alta, frastagliata, difficilmente ci imbattiamo in insenature e promontori. I paesi nascono situati nelle prossimità dello sbocco di torrenti, molti interrati, lasciando spazio agli abitati, i cui bacini si estendono talvolta per soli pochi chilometri, appena definibili "canali" a sentire il dialetto locale. Fa eccezione il Vernazzola, alla cui foce sorge Vernazza.

Il terreno delle Cinque Terre è caratterizzato da un'ossatura di prevalenza rocciosa, e la natura litogica del substrato, della quale le formazioni scistose sono le più erodibili, formano depositi e detriti. Formazioni ofiolitiche più resistenti danno luogo a ciò che vediamo formare i pendii più ripidi. Altresì possiamo rinvenire giacimenti ricchi di ferro e magnesio. Le arenarie sono una linea di demarcazione dove sorge la scogliera tra Monterosso e Riomaggiore.

Il territorio delle Cinque Terre si lascia scoprire comodamente attraversando i suoi numerosi sentieri immersi nel verde, con la possibilità di esplorare di pari passo gli itinerari subacquei, immergendosi nelle ricche acque della riserva marina, o prendendo il largo in battello. Ottime sono ugualmente le possibilità date dal treno, scelta economica per spostarsi via terra da un paese all'altro. Il mezzo, e la gestione della viabilità in particolar modo, ha il pregio di essere quello più utilizzato per i col-

hady farm houses, chestnut woods and centuries-old pine woods, wineries, olive presses, Vermentino grapes and fresh crops, these are the distinctive features of the Cinque Terre, that we could easily print on a postcard plus taken from a panoramic view, instead by the sea we can admire eye-catching groupers, gorgonians, pelagic environments and skiffs complete the scenario.

The shape of the area suggests an ideal bond between one of the most appreciated and clean Italian coasts, and it trails, that meander for over 100 metres above the sea level. The hills of the Cinque Terre are considered as proper mountains, with unique ecosystems, in terms of interaction between man and territory, and show peculiar landscape features.

The anthropic environment has not altered the surrounding nature, and the small strip of land located between the sea and the ridge, that separates this area from Val di Vara and the Gulf of La Spezia, really deserves to be part of UNESCO World Heritage.

From Riomaggiore to Monterosso, apart some areas, the cliffs are high, jagged, we hardly bump into inlets and promontories.

The villages are located near streams , some of which are underground, but leave room for the residential area, as they flow only for a few kilometers, they are called "canali in local dialect. Vernazzola is the longest, at its mouth stands the village of Vernazza.

The typical territory in the Cinque Terre is made of rocks, in the underlayer, there are erodible schist formations that create deposits and debris. Ophiolites are harder rocks that can be found along the steepest slopes.

We can also find iron and magnesium deposits.

Sandstone can be found in the cliff between Monterosso and Riomaggiore.

The territory of the Cinque Terre can be discovered easily crossing its many trails among the woods, or exploring the underwater routes, diving in the rich waters of the Marine reserve, or taking the boat.

An excellent and cheap way to visit this area and its villages is by train, which is in fact widely used both by tourists and inhabitants; regional trains run quite frequently, and even in the evening. The

Chi siamo Franco D’ Ambra, vernazzano puro e pescatore esperto, decide di dare una svolta alla sua vita quando si rende conto della possibilitá di realizzare un progetto che gli permetta di coniugare la sua passione per il mare e la pesca con il desiderio di condividere con altri tale passione e di raccontare le Cinque Terre dal punto di vista di chi il mare lo vive, lo conosce, lo ama, ma anche lo rispetta e lo teme.

Vede nella Pesca – turismo la possibilitá di realizzare il suo progetto e decide di dar vita alla 5 Terre Soc. Coop. ma, ben presto, si rende conto della necessitá di una spinta giovanile e un po' piú tecnologica alla sua sfida.

Entra dunque in contatto con 3 ragazzi di Monterosso, giovani imprenditori del settore turistico che condividono con lui la passione per il mare. Si tratta di Diego Beretta e dei fratelli Daniele e Davide Betta che, affascinati dal progetto, non si lasciano sfuggire l’occasione per farne parte.

About Us Franco D’Ambra, an experienced fisherman from Vernazza, decided to change his life when he realized that it was possible to start a new and important project which allowed him to share his great passion for the fishing and the sea and telling the Cinque Terre history with people loving this place. He decided to realize his new project by founding the 5 Terre Soc. Coop. but he realized soon that he needed help in order to achieve his new challenge.

He got in touch with three young entrepreneurs in the tourism sector: Diego Beretta and the two bothers Daniele and Davide Betta, from Monterosso. Attracted by Franco’s idea, they didn't miss the opportunity to become part of the project.

legamenti: esiste un trenino regionale che passa con grande frequenza, effettuando corse perfino la sera. Il Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre vi concede la possibilità di acquistare la “5 Terre Card”, che comprende sia l'entrata ai sentieri a pagamento, sia viaggi illimitati proprio sui treni, sia la salita giornaliera, anch’essa illimitata, sui bus ecologici buona alternativa alla tratta ferroviaria. Scordatevi dei parcheggi e munitevi di biciletta o attrezzature comode, il trekking è parte preponderante del soggiorno. I vari paesi mantengono livelli di difficoltà variabili, ma tutti i percorsi sono facilmente agibili con un minimo di allenamento, con indumenti idonei ed in condizioni meteo favorevoli, senza dimenticare l’opportuna segnaletica del CAI, e, a tappe, vi attendono dislocati punti di ristoro, terrazze e calette dove tirare il fiato. I principali, alle Cinque Terre, saranno il Sentiero Azzurro, il Sentiero dell’Alta Via e la Strada dei Santuari. Il primo percorso collega l’insieme dei borghi, da Riomaggiore a Monterosso, evoluto a ridosso di un panorama incredibile – e fortemente influenzato dall’uomo, tanto che alcuni tratti possono essere chiusi per manutenzione. Una dozzina di chilometri, in totale. Il tratto che porta da Riomaggiore a Manarola è il sentiero più famoso al mondo, chiamato la Via dell’Amore, anche se ad oggi se ne prevede la completa riapertura solo nel 2021, visto il tentativo di renderlo del tutto agibile. La successiva proposta è una traversata lunga e faticosa, ma priva di pericoli, che domina dall’alto tutto il paesaggio delle Cinque Terre e corrisponde al sentiero n. 1 del CAI della Spezia; lungo una quarantina di chilometri, il tragitto comincia a Portovenere e arriva fino a Levanto. D’altro canto, la Strada dei Santuari, che collega a mezza costa i luoghi di culto dei rispettivi borghi, sembra essere lo snodo di sentieri più facilmente percorribile, praticabili anche a cavallo.

Pittoresco il sentierino digradante verso la spiaggia naturista di Guvano, unito alla tratta secondaria tra Corniglia e Vernazza.

L’itinerario creato tra vigneti terrazzati, comincia da Riomaggiore partendo dalla stazione in via Telemaco Signorini e passando per Volastra e Groppo giunge a Corniglia, in poco più di tre ore. Un tragitto che sbalordisce perché coniuga i panorami impervi con i boschi e i ritagli di torrenti nel verde. Sul territorio nazionale italiano troviamo dislocati più di venti parchi naturali. Eppure, l’interazione ordinata di uomo e ambiente naturale, alle Cinque Terre, ha prodotto un paesaggio di eccezionale valore, ancora oggi testimone di un ruolo socio-economico importante, nella vita della gente. La costa ripida e molto frastagliata è stata ammansita nel corso dei millenni, dal momento che l’uomo, unico architetto dei terrazzamenti, se ne è servito per poter strappare alla natura pochi ettari di terreno adatto alla coltivazione di viti e ulivi. Gli insediamenti, Corniglia e Manarola bene ce lo spiegano, sono nati direttamente sulla roccia, e l’insieme delle caratteristiche si compone di ciò che rende speciale questo territorio.

Se è vero che qui l'ambiente naturale è stato profondamente modificato dall'azione dell'uomo, va allora utilizzato un termine appositamente creato: state visitando il “Parco dell'Uomo”.

Monterosso, a livello naturalistico, pare rivelarsi il paese più visitato, principalmente per la sua ampia spiaggia sabbiosa di Fegina, giudicata da una nota rivista americana tra le 25 più sexy del mondo. In effetti, considerando le aspre ripe, Monterosso è la sola località che accoglie una bella portata di bagnanti. Qui, dopo aver studiato i fondali della costa, per creare una serie di percorsi per subacquei esperti, Monterosso ha realizzato il primo acquario “virtuale” delle Cinque Terre, con video in tridimensionale che trasmettono la vita marina, una curiosa immersione guidata, interamente dedicata alle profondità celate. La nuova struttura è stata realizzata nell' "ex Tortuga", un ristorante scavato nella roccia viva, a cavallo tra la parte vecchia e quella nuova del paese, dinnanzi alla maestosa Torre Aurora.

Eppure, tra le finalità di chi tutela questo tratto di mare, importantissimo dal punto di vista faunistico, giacché nelle sue acque si ha una elevata concentrazione di cetacei e di pesci pelagici, il turismo di massa non è al primo posto. All’Area Marina Protetta delle Cinque Terre vige un approccio quasi di nicchia, rispettoso. Il litorale, comprendente due zone A di riserva integrale e due zone B di riserva generale, chiuso tra Punta Mesco e Capo Montenero, vanta una ricchezza e varietà straordinaria di specie animali e vegetali, tutelando e valorizzando le caratteristiche della biodiversità marina e costiera, non risparmiandosi in lavori di recupero ambientale, di nuovo, impiegando la collaborazione del mondo scientifico, promuovendo ricerche e, come già detto, laboratori, con l'obiettivo di assicurare la conoscenza sistematica dell'area sotto protezione.

In the Municipality of Riomaggiore, the three hamlets of Manarola, Volastra and Groppo, are proper people oriented rural areas, watched over by the Ligurian Apennines, with amazing views of the vineyards located on the terraced hills, if we're lucky we might even see some buzzards hovering in the sky. Monterosso, has a natural appeal and seems the most visited village, mainly because of its wide sandy beach Fegina, considered by a well-known American magazine, as one of the 25 best beaches in the world. In fact Monterosso has the longest beaches and most popular areas.

In Monterosso experts have examined the sea bottom and the coast, and created a series of routes for expert divers, and the first virtual aquarium of the Cinque Terre, with three dimensional videos that broadcast sea life, and a guided tour dedicated to its hidden depths. The new structure is inside the former Tortuga restaurant, built inside the rocks, that separates the old village from the new village, right in front of Aurora Tower.The goal is to protect this very important stretch of sea, its wildlife, and the high concentration of cetaceans and pelagic fish.

da 37 anni al centro della vita culturale di Vernazza, con pittori “Rosa, Gianni Novak, Guy Harloff, Hoffmann”, scrittori “Edouard Glissant”, poeti, cantanti, registi, musicisti “Vittorio Centanaro” che Piva accoglieva con la sua personalità eclettica e le sue canzoni in dialetto di Vernazza.

Il figlio Raphaël Resasco, scultore, ha ripreso il Ristorante senza cambiarne l'anima e continua a cantare le canzoni di suo Padre!

For 37 years known as the cultural centre of Vernazza, where painters such as “Rosa, Gianni Novak, Guy Harloff, Hoffmann”, or writers such as “Edouard Glissant”,plus poets, singers, film directors, musicians "Vittorio Centanaro" gathered thanks to Piva's eclectic personality and his songs, sang in the local dialect of Vernazza. onsorzi biologici, prodotti a chilometro zero e raccolti dalla terra che inseguono una scrupolosa stagionalità, ma anche ristorazioni stellate in grado di riadattare la tradizione, comunque contadina e marinara, fanno parte della gastronomia locale. La cucina, se vogliamo essere onesti, alle Cinque Terre è sia un momento per colmare la fame, sia una punta di diamante dello stesso turismo a tre e sessanta, dal momento che non è possibile scindere le ricette tipiche, tutte quante, dal valore contestuale mai solo relegato alla sola tavola, ad un pranzo o a una cena. Si veda per esempio il pesto; erroneamente definito genovese, tra questi declivi arrabbiati ha uno dei suoi luoghi “natali”: le Cinque Terre sono cultrici – ed anche tutrici – di un basilico venuto su come un figlio, proprio lì in mezzo ai terrazzamenti, ci sono aziende che insegnano come prepararlo, corsi per realizzarlo adoperando il mortaio alla maniera delle nonne, ci sono ingredienti DOP che gridano la loro appartenenza all’arco di costa interessata e profumi portati dal vento che sembrano l’apericena, o l’antipasto sensoriale, delle portate ufficiali. Si consideri anche la ricca tradizione dei pescherecci, lo stesso pescato giornaliero a base di acciughe, dentici e orate… l’intero apparato di ferree regole messe a tutela dell’Area Marina Protetta che si legano

a un discorso naturalistico, il pesce preso non eccede mai e dunque i pescatori diventano simboli di cultura e tradizione grazie alla propria iniziativa. E’ addirittura possibile fare un tour con i pescatori locali, affinché sia possibile prendere atto dell’attività più sostenibile che venatoria. Quando si parla di Cinque Terre, al pescato o ai piatti a base di crostacei vanno associate le colture storiche (vigneto ed oliveto) e gli orti che custodiscono le erbe aromatiche la cui crescita è incentivata dal clima propizio, grandemente adoperate in cucina (borragine, timo, rosmarino, salvia…). Sporadiche e di magro sono le carni impiegate nei piatti della tradizione, dal momento che la morfologia del suolo non consente l'allevamento di animali di grandi dimensioni quali vedremmo nelle masserie toscane di bestiame.

Il parco si mette in gioco a sua volta, lasciando a disposizione funghi, agrumi e castagne, questo in particolare frutto prediletto nella preparazione di dolci, e il proposito dell’istituzione apre le porte alla realizzazione di apparenti “magie alchemiche” in grado di trasformare i “profumi”, ovvero le erbe spontanee, e gli “ingredienti” base, come ad esempio l’olio di oliva, dando vita ad essenze e prodotti di cosmesi, a loro volta eccezionali varianti dell’economia di zona. Sostanzialmente, la gastronomia varia quindi tra alimenti di mare e altri di terra, tenuto da conto che i piatti tipici risultano sempre leggeri, profumati ed estremamente semplici, arricchendosi per la stagione fredda, specchio di una frugalità comunque gustosa e necessaria al sostentamento di numerose famiglie.

Dove i contadini praticano la coltivazione della vite e dell’olivo con dedizione, prendiamo pure Corniglia a modello, si diffonde l’allevamento di animali da bassa corte, conigli e pollame, i legumi subentrano ai crostacei, e le verdure e gli ortaggi diventano elementi ricorrenti nelle zuppe, preferite ai primi di pasta e sugo. Ma non è detto: le troffie (o trofie) – sorta di pasta corta arricciata a mano –, i corzetti o le trenette al pesto, meglio se guarniti da patate lesse e fagiolini, i pansotti e i ravioli ripieni di borragine al sugo di noci, le ricordiamo in quanto ricette care a tutta la gastronomia locale, e ai dintorni.

Proprio nel bel borgo di Corniglia non dimenticatevi di gustare un particolare gelato ricavato dal famoso miele di zona, vera e autentica leccornia locale. La ricetta del vero pesto, si diceva, viene contesa fra le varie province della Liguria. Eppure la disciplinare, anche alle Cinque Terre, parla chiaro: vi serve il basilico migliore, che è poi l’ingrediente chiave, l'olio extravergine di oliva, del parmigiano reggiano o del pecorino stagionato, aglio dolce, sale grosso, pinoli, e con la salsa ottenuta si procede al condimento di primi piatti. La pasta va bollita in acqua, meglio se pura, dove è concesso aggiungere le verdure estive di cui sopra. Considerate che, qui sulle colline, chi fa il pesto lo produce “ad occhio”, senza consultare libri di cucina, e che ognuno ha le sue preferenze di “guarnizione” e metodi d’impiego, capiterà di trovarlo sulla focaccia o spalmato per l’aperitivo su bruschette tiepide, o perfino aggiunto, a fine cottura, ai minestroni.

Recandovi ai ristoranti di Monterosso e Vernazza, viceversa, il posto d’onore vedrete che spetterà a piatti a base di pesce, tra cui è d’uopo menzionare le acciughe ripiene, o le cozze, chiamate “muscoli” in dialetto, specialità di punta della cucina del Capoluogo e delle Cinque Terre più in generale, spruzzate col limone o di nuovo ripiene, e il ripieno si prepara con un impasto a base di mollica, aglio e parmigiano; facilmente i “muscoli” diventano l’alimento favorito dei turisti. Le portate dei primi non sono più farcite utilizzando carni magre od odori dell’orto, ed ecco allora spuntare sulla tavola i ravioli di pesce, le zuppe, sempre di pesce, un sontuoso minestrone alla genovese, ponte tra mare e monti. Monterosso si avvale delle acciughe per costruirci una fortuna, proposte fritte, ripiene o ridotte in timballo, riadattate a cotoletta, in paranza, e definite non a caso quale “pane del mare” dagli abitanti locali. Le acciughe, altresì, sono presenti quasi in ogni piatto delle Cinque Terre, dalle massaie del borgo vengono apprezzate perché le signore la sanno lunga, si tratta di un pesce poco costoso ma veramente ricco di sostanze nutritive. Nei borghi delle Cinque Terre, e nei dintorni, al solito, come niente potrete visitare sagre popolari a base di pesce azzurro, e l'acciughina di Monterosso ne è un esempio. Seguono i “gianchetti”, questo il nome dato al novellame di acciughe e sardine, consumati o in zuppa oppure fritti in abbondante olio di oliva. Prima che la tutela ambientale salvaguardasse la pesca dei pesciolini, era frequente assaggiare le frittelle di gianchetti, gustandoli assieme ad una pastella a base di uova, farina e acqua frizzante, di conseguenza fritti. Per l’ovvio motivo che una frittella ha bisogno di un notevole impiego di materia prima, oggi è lecito accontentarsi delle frittelle di fiori di zucca, le cosiddette “Fris de Burbugiun”, ottimo contorno estivo. Emblematica, tuttora a Vernazza e a Monterosso, è la pietanza del “tian” (tegame, in dialetto locale), piatto unico e corposo ottenuto tagliando le patate a listelle sottili, arricchito con acciughe, condito con olio del posto, vino bianco, aglio, scorza di limone, e pomodoro fresco; dal tegame che ne compone il nome, otteniamo così una specie di squisita lasagna… indovinate…, mare e monti.

completamente marinara, come ci si potrebbe aspettare, a Riomaggiore il piatto di spicco non si basa sul pesce, ma è di terra. Si tratta della torta di riso, preparata secondo tradizione in occasione della festa patronale di san Giovanni Battista. Cotta al forno, e impastata con riso, formaggio, olio, sale e pepe, non ha niente a che vedere con la cugina toscana, dolce, o con la torta di riso “scema” di Sarzana, via di mezzo tra le due. A Riomaggiore ne custodiscono la ricetta considerando la torta un autentico piatto unico, e tassativamente salato, offerto dalle massaie ai famigliari specialmente d’inverno. Per la festa della Madonna di Soviore, facciamo un altro salto a Monterosso, la ricetta della sostanziosa torta di riso salata è in effetti la medesima. La minestra di “campo”, condita con olio di oliva e fatta lasciando sobbollire le patate, aggiungendovi le erbe selvatiche e il radicchio, le bietole e la valeriana, dal periodo freddo transita, a Riomaggiore, verso la brezzolina tiepida già da sola grande condimento per lo stoccafisso, le acciughe salate sott’olio e la “panissa”, variante della celebre farinata di ceci, laddove già nel secolo trascorso la si serviva fritta o con l’intento di riproporre la stessa pietanza di riciclo con condimenti differenti. Per mezzo del tesoro di bosco ed entroterra, le Cinque Terre diventano patria non ufficiale della torta di farina di castagne, chiamata pattona o castagnaccio, castagnàsu in dialetto. Ampio spazio viene lasciato a pinoli, confetture realizzate con agrumi, dal lavoro nei campi abbiamo fragole, fichi, carciofi, porri e asparagi. Giungendo al dessert, doveroso provare la torta Monterossina, peccato di gola che abbraccia un morbido pan di Spagna riempito da confettura di albicocche e scaglie di fondente. Molto simile, potete assaggiare la Stalìn di Vernazza, la quale prende il nome dall’eccentrico pasticcere a cui si deve la creazione. Il dolce è composto da uno strato di marmellata di frutta e da due più spessi di crema pasticcera e di crema al cioccolato, il tutto racchiuso da un guscio di pasta frolla. Gelati artigianali, laboratori nello specifico si trovano a Vernazza e a Monterosso al Mare, anche in virtù della frutta fresca biologica e della grande varietà di sapori indirizzata nella produzione, rapiscono con sapori inusuali dolci e salati. La qualità del vino delle Cinque Terre risale a Plinio (I sec. D.C.), che ce lo nomina come il migliore di Etruria, e dopo di lui Boccaccio e Dante ne hanno decantato le qualità. Passito intramontabile alle Cinque Terre è un prodotto DOC che porta l’evocativo nome di Sciacchetrà, da "sciacàa", schiacciare. Di colore giallo paglierino, dal profumo ampio e fruttato, vellutato sul palato, tendente al colore ambra se leggermente affinato, benché dolce e liquoroso rientra nella categoria dei vini, fornendo l’ideale accompagnamento di fine pasto. La sua produzione viene consentita solo in alcuni comuni della provincia della Spezia. Eccellente anche l’altro grande vino proprio dei borghi, il Cinque Terre DOC. Vino Bianco da tavola, secco, perfetto per zuppe e secondi a base di pesce, a Denominazione di Origine Controllata, proviene dalle località di Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza e Monterosso al Mare, inevitabile. Il bianco si consegue dalla spremitura di vitigni in parte di uva Bosco e in parte di Vermentino e Albarola. Gran finale se lo aggiudica il “limoncino” di Monterosso, digestivo profumatissimo di gran voga durante la Sagra del Limone, in paese, per la Pentecoste. L'obiettivo superiore della gastronomia (così come dell’eno-), alle Cinque Terre, in ultima analisi è quello di innescare un processo generale di sviluppo sostenibile, migliorando la qualità della vita individuale e rendendo indimenticabile l’esperienza del pasto, nell'intento di dimostrare, concretamente e realmente, che competitività economica e sostenibilità ambientale vanno di pari passo, e possono trovare un felice punto d’incontro anzitutto a tavola.

iological consortia, local grown products strictly used according to the season, but also starred restaurants able to reinvent the traditional recipies of the farmers and seamen, are part of the local cuisine. To be honest, the cuisine in the Cinque Terre is not just a break to satisfly your hunger, but it's a true gem, a very important part of the tourism, and of its roots.

Just think about the delicious pesto sauce, people have always thought that it has a Genoese origin, instead the steep slopes terraces of this area, are in fact one of the places where basil is grown and looked after like a son.

There are farms that organize courses on how to prepare it, using a marble mortarl and pestle like granmother used to do, with precious DOP products strictly from this coast, and the scents brought by the winds that might remind us of a table laid for an aperitif or for dinner.

We should also consider the rich, ancient tradition of the fishing boats, the daily catch based on anchovies, snappers and sea breams ..... there are strict rules in order to protect the Marine Protected Area, and help the environment , the quantity of fish caught is determined before hand.

We could consider fishermen as symbols of culture and tradition thanks to their many initiatives, and boat tours, to explain more about their work, and how important it is for the territory.

When we talk about Cinque Terre, we think about daily catch, fish and shell fish dishes, ancient crops (vineyards and olive groves), and scented aromatic plants, such as borage, thyme, rosemary, sage, often used in recipes, they grow well incouraged by the favourable climate.

Lean meat is rarely used in traditional dishes, because the shape of the area does not allow livestock like in the farms in Tuscany.

The park offers great natural resources, mushrooms, agrumes and chestnuts, this fruit in particular is used to make various dishes and cakes, the many scented spontaneous herbs, become the main ingredients of various recipes, as well as olive oil, which is also used in cosmetics.

Basically recipes use both sea and land ingredients, dishes are light and scented even if extremely simple, in winter they are obviously richer in flavour and ingredients for the sustenance of the families.

Where farmers cultivate the land, with vineyards and olive groves, we can also find small animals, such as poultry and rabbits, used in many recipes, mixed bean soups and vegetables replace dishes with shellfish and pasta with sauces, we can find troffie or trofie, a short type of handmade spiral shaped pasta, corzetti, trenette with pesto sauce, adding boiled potatoes and green beans, pansotti and ravioli stuffed with borage and served with walnut sauce, these are all typical, local dishes. In Corniglia don't forget to taste the delicious icecream made with the famous local honey, a really yummy snack.

As already mentioned the recipe of the real pesto sauce is disputed in the various Ligurian provinces. There are proper rules on how to make it, you need the best basil, which is the key ingredient, extra vergin olive oil, parmigiano reggiano cheese or seasoned pecorino, sweet garlic, cooking salt and pine nuts; the sauce obtained from these ingredients is

a perfect match with pasta, the recipe tells that pasta must be boiled in pure water with green beans and potatoes.

Those who make pesto sauce, don't follow cooking books, and don't weigh the ingredients, everyone has its favourite techique, you may find this sauce on a focaccia or spread on a bruschetta as aperitif, or even added at the last moment in a minestrone, the typical vegetable soup.

If you go to a restaurant in Monterosso and Vernazza, the place of honour goes to fish dishes, among the many you must try stuffed anchovies, or mussels, called muscles in local dialect, a popular and special dish in the area of La Spezia and Cinque Terre. You can eat them with a sprinkle of lemon juice, or stuffed with bread, garlic, parsley and parmigiano cheese, particulary appreciated by tourists.

Main courses no longer use lean meat and scents from the kitchen gardens, but you will find fish ravioli, fish soups, a rich Genoese vegetable soup (minestrone), a link between sea and land.

Monterosso has made a fortune with its anchovies, you can find them fried, stuffed or in a timballo, fried like cutlets, or fried with other seasonal fish, the locals call it sea bread.

Anchovies can be found in many dishes made by the local housewifes, who know well that this fish is rich in nutritious elements and the same time cheap to buy.

In the Cinque and surrounding areas you can find popular fairs, with oily fish dishes, especially the famous anchovies from Monterosso.

Whitebait of anchovies and sardines can be found in soups, or fried in hot olive oil. Nowadays whitebait catch is protected and safeguarded, in the past it was quite common to find them fried in a batter with flour, eggs and fizzy water.

As fritters need a lot of ingredients, nowadays it is better to eat courgette fritters, the so called “Fris de Burbugiun”, an excellent summer sidedish.

A typical dish in Vernazza and Monterosso is “tian” (pan in local dialect), it is made with sliced potatoes, anchovies

seasoned with local olive oil, white wine, garlic, lemon zest and fresh tomatoes, a sort of yummy lasagna, and guess what … a bond between sea and land.

In Riomaggiore taking advantage of the ancient farmers' culture the main dish is obviously based on land ingredients, it is a savoury rice cake, prepared with boiled rice, olive oil, salt, pepper, and baked in the oven, it is made to celebrate the patron Saint Giovanni Battista. This rice cake has nothing to do with the one made in Tuscany, or with the so called “silly cake” made in Sarzana The recipe of this rice cake is well kept, it can be considered a main course, made by housewives especially in winter, there is a similar recipe in Monterosso, where it is made for the celebration of the Virgin mother in Soviore.

In winter a common dish is the veggie soup, made with wild herbs and seasoned with olive oil, let the potatoes simmer in hot water, then add wild herbs, radicchio salad, chard, and valerian. As regards fish you can find stockfish, salted anchovies in extra vergin olive oil and fried panissa made with chickpea flour just like farinata, in the past century it was considered a left over dish, eaten adding different dressings.

The treasures of the woods and inland let the Cinque Terre become the unofficial homeland of the chestnut cake, the so called castagnaccio or pattona, in local dialect castagnàsu. Great importance have local ingredients such as pine nuts, strawberries, figs, artichokes, asparagus, and marmelade made with local citrus fruit.

Talking about dessert, you must try Monterossina cake, a true sin of gluttony, it is a soft sponge cake filled with apricot jam and bits of dark chocolate, there is a similar cake in Vernazza, called Stalìn, the name of the eccentric baker who created it, the cake has a thick layer of jam, two layers of thick custard and chocolate cream, inside a shell of shortcut pastry, Artisan ice creams can be found in Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, where there are proper workshops, thanks to the organic local fruit and the variety of ingredients used, the flavours obtained are really unusual.

The quality of the Cinque Terre wine, was already well known at the time of Plinio, in the first century before Christ, he thought that it was the best in Etruria, and after him Boccaccio and Dante praised its qualities.

Passito is another timeless DOC wine in the Cinque Terre, it has a suggestive name Sciacchetrà, from "sciacàa that means to press. The colour can be straw-yellow or amber if aged, the flavour is broad, sweet, fruity, and smooth. It is an ideal wine to finish your meal The production of this wine is allowed only in some areas of the province of La Spezia.

Another excellent local wine, is Cinque Terre DOC, a white dry wine, a perfect match with soups and fish main courses, it is made in Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. This white wine is obtained by pressing Bosco grapes, as well as Vermentino and Albarola grapes. To finish you should try “Limoncino di Monterosso”, a popular scented liquer, that you will also find at the Lemon Fair in Pentecoste.

In the Cinque Terre, the final goal of food and wine is to obtain a general, sustainable development process, that improves the quality of life, a meal becomes an unforgettable experience, to demonstrate that competitiveness and environmental sustainability go hand in hand, and can find a happy match at a table.

a stagione turistica difficilmente va di pari passo con sovraffollamento e problemi contingenti, perché territori del genere vivono del e col turismo e, in tal senso, le Cinque Terre sono perfettamente attrezzate: si può dire senza problema che sono una meta ambita dai viaggiatori di ogni dove, e i colori sono belli e accattivanti durante ogni periodo dell’anno.

Ciò nonostante, non bisogna dimenticarsi della natura circostante e di quanto, per certi versi, possa diventare volubile. Vero è che il clima locale mitiga ogni eventuale disagio, mai troppo caldo, grazie a un vento temperato soffiato dalle colline al mare, ma non si può prescindere da un muretto a secco crollato o un albero sradicato da un temporale, proprio per la tipicità di alcune zone e gli stretti passaggi tra la terra e il mare.

Anche la scarsità di parcheggi, in realtà, può essere un problema, ma mai d’ostacolo. Infatti, l’amministrazione comunale viene in soccorso del turista con servizi navetta, con le guardie del parco, e con gli stessi residenti, cuore e motore di questa “loggia” sul Mar Ligure, che si occupano di mantenerla al meglio.

Molti agriturismi organizzano escursioni negli immediati pressi, a piedi o in bicicletta, parimenti degustazioni di piatti tipici e infrastrutture all’avanguardia coccolano i loro ospiti lasciando scoprire a poco a poco terre di magia.

Il battello – e il Consorzio Marittimo Turistico 5 Terre-Golfo dei Poeti ha fatto scuola – detiene il titolo di uno dei modi più pratici e a buon mercato per visitare le diverse località della riviera: riempitevi gli occhi con le rocce a strapiombo sul mare, con partenze in funzione da fine marzo a inizio novembre. I principali punti di imbarco il turista li trova a Levanto, Portovenere, Lerici e La Spezia, e in generale in tutto il Levante della bella costa ligure. Anfratti e grotte, all'interno dell'Area Marina Protetta, costituiscono il tesoro di tutti gli amanti dello snorkeling, e i fondali rocciosi, le baie, l’impronta delle scogliere e le grotte preistoriche che qui dimorano da millenni aggiungono mistero ad ogni singola esperienza. Irrinunciabili, ad esempio, le immersioni nel golfo di Monterosso al Mare, di fronte la sua vasta spiaggia, sul cui fondo marino troviamo un mezzo da sbarco tedesco ricoperto dalle gorgonie. Il whale watching, invece, vale a dire l’avvistamento delle balene, è un’attività che in questo tratto di mare e non solo permette, come abbiamo visto, di catturare il passaggio di cetacei difficilmente avvistabili altrove, per merito delle acque relativamente fredde e calme, con correnti che trasportano plancton nutriente – interessato è l’arco costiero sotto la protezione del Santuario Pelagos.

Altissime balze a picco sul mare, anfratti e insenature accattivano i principianti - e di pari passo gli esperti - del diving e della vela, stesso discorso per coloro che praticano il surf. Numerosi “hot spot” vi attendono dislocati sul territorio, anche se Levanto prima di altri, vero e proprio paradiso della disciplina, si dedica con passione a questo sport, fornendo agli interessati la possibilità di noleggiare l'attrezzatura, inclusi il windsurf e il bodyboard. Campiglia, frazione del comune della Spezia a 400 metri s.l.m., chiude l’areale limitrofo a Riomaggiore – ed ospita la bellissima spiaggia del Persico, raggiungibile dopo una faticosa discesa – e completa lo scenario rivelandosi uno strategico punto di sosta per gli escursionisti, già punto panoramico dove comincia la zona dei “Tramonti di Campiglia”.

Many are the outdoor activities which can be done in the five wonderful villages, ravines and caves, inside the Marine Protected Area, are real treasures for snorkeling lovers, as rocky sea bottoms, bays, and the shape of the cliffs with prehistoric caves add mystery to every experience.

For example, diving in the Gulf of Monterosso al Mare, in front of the beach is an essential experience, on the sea bottom there is the wreck of a German landing craft covered with gorgonians. Un’altra spiaggia, irraggiungibile da terra a causa dello stato del percorso, è quella del Canneto, tra Punta Castagna e Punta del Cavo; la fascia di ciottoli ha la particolarità di avere una cascata naturale di acqua dolce che scende dalla collina, simile ad una doccia naturale. Bene sarebbe ricordare, a chi si immerge a Riomaggiore per la prima volta, quanto il mare possa diventare subito profondo: prestare attenzione non guasta mai.

A suo tempo sviluppatasi quasi esclusivamente sull’agricoltura, ed in particolare sulla coltivazione della vite, è proprio l’economia riomaggiorese che sembra trainare i commerci odierni alle Cinque Terre: grazie alla bellezza del paesaggio terrazzato, il lavoro delle generazioni passate, che hanno trasformato e reso coltivabili i ripidi versanti delle colline, il borgo del Rio accoglie turisti da tutto il mondo, desiderosi di cimentarsi con prove di fatica e scenari probabilmente davvero unici.

Il borgo di pescatori per antonomasia delle Cinque Terre, Manarola, viene circondato da una barriera naturale di scogli a picco sul mare, ideale per gli amanti degli scorci e della solitudine, ma nulla vieta di sedersi sul molo per una siesta corroborante. Tutto il paese si struttura sorgendo a ventaglio di fronte al corso principale con le coloratissime case-torri, la chiesa gotica di San Lorenzo e la particolare piramide di cemento che fa capolino dagli edifici. Una nota a parte per gli intrepidi camminatori: sopra il paese, molto lontane dalla spiaggia ma non per questo meno baciate dall’aria di mare, e con una mirabile tradizione a base di cucina di pesce, si inerpicano le case di Groppo e Volastra, frazioni collinari di Manarola nel Comune di Riomaggiore. Volastra in particolare è posizionata a 300 metri s.l.m. e si raggruppa, formando una pianta rotonda che mira a ricordare le antiche origini medievali, in un terreno circondato da splendidi uliveti. Groppo si trova a metà strada tra le due. L'uno e l'altro paese sono raggiungibili a piedi attraverso gli antichi sentieri o per mezzo del servizio di bus navetta regolare, con varie corse giornaliere. In una decina di minuti, le navette collegano Manarola con Volastra e viceversa.

Corniglia, pur essendo l’unica a non avere accesso diretto alla costa, scendendo verso il livello del mare e seguirete una deviazione dal sentiero Corniglia-Vernazza (a pagamento per il costo di 3 euro), o dal tunnel della dismessa ferrovia Genova-La Spezia, segnalata dalla stazione della stessa Corniglia, ospita l’altra grande e fresca spiaggia delle cinque, famosa per l’afflusso di naturisti oggi come negli anni settanta, ovvero il “Guvano”.

Situata nella parte alta di Corniglia, vi è la Chiesa di San Pietro, assolutamente da vedere risalendo nell’entroterra. High cliffs overlooking the sea, ravines and inlets attract beginners and expert divers, sailors and surfers. There are several hot spots along the coast, Levanto is a true paradise for surfers, you can also hire the equipment for windsurf and surf. Finally, Campiglia, a hamlet part of the municipality of La Spezia, located at 400 metres above the sea level, hosts the beautiful beach Persico, reachable on foot going down a long slope, this is a strategic place for hikers, from the panoramic area called Tramonti di Campiglia.

Riomaggiore is the first village that you see coming from La Spezia, when you get off the train go through the tunnel, then down towards the marina, and to the left, near the Cinque Terre ferry landing, there is a bathing area.

Vernazza, d’altro canto, ha un porticciolo tranquillo, con una capienza di circa 200 posti barca, accanto alla chiesa di Santa Margherita, dove però è possibile stendere l’asciugamano solo nell’ottica di adattarsi alle asperità. L’acqua, qui, rispecchia la costa ed è limpida e pulita. All’ora del break dalla tintarella, potrete riempirvi la pancia con succulenti piatti primi e portate a base di scampi presso tutti i ristorantini o i bistrot che vi potete trovare e non dimenticate di salire fino alle terrazze del Castello che a Vernazza vi faranno godere di un panorama impagabile.

Nei dintorni, complice il suo ambiente mediterraneo, ricordatevi della possibilità di incontrare i viticoltori, protagonisti della raccolta di ciò che è la matrice di quel vino liquoroso, l’inestimabile nettare denominato "Sciacchetrà". Purché muniti di barca, la grotta "Maemuna" non dovrà mancare alla vostra vacanza: la scoprite accedendo fin dentro la roccia della scogliera sovrastante. Chi ama l’attività subacquea avrà la possibilità di immergersi esplorando i ricchi fondali dello specchio d’acqua antistante Vernazza. Si può contare sulla presenza di un centro diving, direttamente in paese.

Venendo alla balneabilità, quella vastissima spiaggia di Fegina, la classica con ombrelloni e sdraio, che abbiamo detto aspettarvi a Monterosso, dominata da una scultura in cemento armato e ferro del 1910 denominata il “Gigante”, si trova proprio di fronte alla stazione dei treni, oltre il castello. Il borgo antico cresce invece sviluppato intorno alle anse scure e alla scogliera, sormontato dai resti del forte. Intramontabile la passeggiata, gelato o cartina alla mano, tra i suoi vicoli e nei negozi di souvenir.

Tappa fissa a giugno lungo le vie del paese, quando si possono degustare le famose acciughe che già dal primo mattino vengono fritte nella tipica padella in ferro, a forma di pesce, presenziando all’ormai nota sagra.

Lo stretto contatto tra uomo e natura, trasversalmente, più in grande ha dato il via all’applicazione, sia a livello turistico, sia a livello esperienziale, all’introduzione di tecniche naturopatiche e di laboratori, centri benessere e resort, percorsi enogastronomici in cantine che non sono semplici cantine ma botteghe delle meraviglie (dalla collina del Corniolo si arriva alla Cantina Sociale delle Cinque Terre), ispirate ai colori del posto.

Questi cenni di educazione alla salute e alla comunione del “binomio” danno vita ad un turismo che diviene culturale e salvifico, necessaria tabella di marcia per uno stile di vita in armonia con le leggi della natura. Ne è un esempio l’ente-parco, e lo sviluppo ecosostenibile rappresentato, il quale proietta all'esterno non solo un discorso di “passeggiate” nel verde, trekking o assalti all’alta stagione, ma raggruppa i valori che sono quelle discipline con un occhio rivolto alla scienza moderna e l’altro al passato semplice, rurale.

Talking about bathing, a perfect place is the wide beach Fegina, a typical beach with beach umbrellas and deck chairs, DOMINATED BY a sculpture made with concrete and iron in 1910, called the "Giant", located right in front of the train station, beyond the castle. The ancient village developed on the cliffs, watched over by the remains of the stronghold.

Enjoy a walk along the timeless promenade eating an ice cream, or carrying a map along the alleys full of souvenir shops. In June you can taste the famous anchovies, fried from early morning in the typical iron pan, shaped like a fish, at the well known and famous festival. The close bond between man and nature, on a bigger scale, has enabled the develop naturopathic techniques and laboratories, wellness centres and resorts, wine and food trips to local cellars that are a sort of wonderful shops (Corniolo hill - Cantina Cinque Terre), inspired by the local colours. Luoghi

d'interesse Consideriamo a questo punto alcuni degli eventi maggiormente apprezzati alle Cinque Terre. Feste e sagre affondano la loro storia nel medioevo ed ancor prima, e rimangono legate a doppio filo con la tradizione cristiana e i luoghi di culto ad essa votati. A mezza costa, molte delle chiese e delle abbazie vengono collegate dalla summenzionata Via dei Santuari, la quale collega ogni tappa al rispettivo borgo attraverso mulattiere, serie di scalini e/o scalinate e varianti sul tema più o meno facili da percorrere rigorosamente a piedi.

E veniamo alla basilica di San Giovanni Battista, costruita nel 1340 e con una facciata rimodernata in stile neogotico, la quale si leva solida e ingrigita nella parte alta del paese di Riomaggiore; nei pressi potete far visita alla casa in cui soggiornò Telemaco Signorini, caposcuola della corrente dei Macchiaioli. Il santuario di Montenero, al contrario, si staglia consentendo di abbracciare il panorama che va da Punta Mesco fino all’isola del Tino, ma separato, quasi un’oasi. Viene circondato da un prato e da un’area verde in cui sono sistemate alcune attrezzature per il ristoro. Doverosa la visita a questo complesso, assolutamente imperdibile. Potete raggiungerlo salendo dalla marina alle colline, servendovi del percorso de «l’anello di Riomaggiore», oppure scarpinando sul sentiero che da Portovenere porta fino all’ombra della torre campanaria.

Il sabato prima della domenica di Pentecoste gli abitanti del borgo fanno la processione fino al santuario, e nell’occasione si svolge l'esposizione degli ex voto, che ha nome "Gli ori di Montenero".

La spartana chiesa di San Lorenzo, con un interno decorato a ricchi motivi barocchi, a quanto pare fu costruita dai maestri Antelami, e si trova a Manarola. Il 10 agosto c’è la festa del santo, al solito seguita da processione nelle vie del paese, culminante col trasferimento della portantina, dove è collocato San Lorenzo, su una barca. Vanto e orgoglio dei cittadini è un primato da guinness: il più grande presepe nel mondo, illuminato – per mezzo del fotovoltaico – tanto da dar vita ad una scena con più di 300 figure a grandezza naturale sul pendio della montagna. Mario Andreoli, ex ferroviere in pensione, negli anni settanta lo ha fortemente voluto e ha dedicato perciò la sua vita alla realizzazione di un'opera più che encomiabile. of interest Let's talk about some of the most appreciated events that take place in the Cinque Terre. Feasts and fairs date back to Middle Ages and even before, linked to the christian tradition and to its places of worship.

Halfway up the hills along Via dei Santuari, we find many churches and abbeys, the villages are connected to each other thanks to mule tracks, steps and easy paths.

It's time to mention the basilica of Saint Giovanni Battista, built in 1340, its facade was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style, it is a solid and grey building located in the upper part of Riomaggiore; not far from here you can visit the house where the artist Telemaco Signorini, one of the members of the group Macchiaioli, stayed for a short period. Another charming place worth to visit is the sanctuary of Montenero, surrounded by a lawn equipped with tables and benches for a short stop, the church was built in a perfect high position, it allows a magnificent panoramic view of Punta Mesco and Tino island. You can reach it from the marina going up the hill, using the path called "the ring of Riomaggiore", or from another path that starts in Portovenere, and takes straight to the shade of the bell tower. The saturday before Pentecost the inhabitants of the village organize a procession that leads to this sanctuary, former vows called "Gli ori di Montenero" are on display.

The austere church of Saint Lorenzo, located in Manarola, has a richly decorated interior, with baroque elements, apparently it was built by the Antelami masters. Every year, on August 10th the Saint is celebrated with a charming procession in the streets of the village, the statue of the Saint is then transferred from a sedan chair to a boat. Pride of the inhabitants of Manarola is the huge crib placed on the hill opposite the village, it is the biggest in the world, with more than 300 human size characters, lit with photovoltaic. The creator of this impressive work is Mr Mario Andreoli, a retired railway worker, who since the seventies has planned and dedicated his life to this masterpiece, it is usually lit every year on 8 December, and is visible to visitors until the end of January.

In June there is the celebration of Saint Pietro in Corniglia, with a procession along the streets of the village, that starts from the parish church, built in Ligurian Gothic style, and continues up to the panoramic

A giugno si festeggia San Pietro, a Corniglia, con processione per le vie del paese che parte dalla chiesa parrocchiale, in stile gotico ligure, e arriva fino alla terrazza panoramica di Santa Maria. Il Santuario di Nostra Signora delle Grazie, pure se annoverato fra i beni di Corniglia, si trova nella piccola frazione di San Bernardino, sotto Vernazza. Databile al 1800, è noto anche con il nome di San Bernardino alla Foce, giacché originariamente intitolato al santo per ricordare il suo passaggio, avvenuto nel 1485. Dal piazzale della chiesa, si apre un bellissimo panorama sulla campagna di Corniglia e sulla spiaggia naturista di Guvano. Nostra Signora della Salute è posizionato a Volastra, uno dei cinque famosi santuari della collezione privilegiata dei borghi. Le prime attestazioni della chiesa ce la documentano in piedi dal 1240.

A Vernazza, la manifestazione più importante è la festa patronale di Santa Maria di Antiochia, in luglio. Verrete coinvolti dalle voci festose di una sontuosa processione, banchetti nella via principale verranno allestiti per l’occasione. Durante la sera, i fuochi, vero must dell’evento. La chiesa è in stile romanico, messa a frangersi lungo lla costa e con la torre campanaria ben visibile, ed è stata costruita nel XI-XII secolo.

La torre di Belforte, simbolo di Vernazza, e il castello dei Doria alla quale si lega proprio sul lembo di terra lanciato in bocca al mare, sono stati costruiti a difesa della città e per consentire l’osservazione di tutta la costa. Essendo entrambi in buono stato di conservazione, la municipalità offre tuttora un bellissimo panorama dalla terrazza del castello. Per il modico prezzo di 1.50 euro, potrete ammirare il lungomare vernazzolese a tutto tondo. Innalzato nell’XI secolo sulle rovine di un edificio di culto più antico, il romanico santuario della Madonna Nera, in località Reggio, conserva l’immagine del volto di una rarissima vergine dello stesso colore. La prima domenica di agosto si è soliti celebrarne la festa.

Come non citare il Natale Subacqueo, a Vernazza, manifestazione sentita e ormai punto fermo della comunità: i sub riportano alla superficie, pescandola dai flutti, una statua di Gesù, e una accorata processione la accompagna sino alla chiesa, a sua volta immersa nel verde, dove si svolge la Santa Messa.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace, is located in the small village of San Bernardino, even if it is considered as part of Corniglia, it is in fact part of the village of Vernazza. It dates back to 1800, the church is also known as Saint Bernardino alla Foce, to remember when the saint passed here in 1485. From the square in front of the church, you can admire the wonderful countryside of Corniglia and the nudist beach Guvano. Our Lady of Health is located in Volastra, this is one of the five famous sanctuaries of the hamlets. There is evidence that the church already exhisted in 1240.

In Vernazza, the most important event is the festival in July for Santa Maria di Antiochia. You will be involved by the merry voices of worshippers in a magnificent procession, there are stalls placed in the main streets, especially for this event. In the evening the best moment, a must of the whole event are the spectacular fire works. The church of Santa Maria di Antiochia was built in Romanesque style in the eleventh -twelth century along the coast, you can easily spot it thanks to its tall bell tower.

The Romanic sancturary Madonna Nera, is located in Reggio, inside you can admire a rare painting of the black vergin, the celebrations take place the first Sunday, in August.

Belforte tower, the symbol of Vernazza, and the Doria castle are both located on the strip of land overlooking the sea, they were built to observe and defend the village and the coast. They are both in good conditions, you can admire a magnificent view of the whole area, from the terrace of the castle, the price of the ticket is only 1.50 euros.

We can't forget about the underwater Christmas nativity, a popolar event for the inhabitants in Vernazza: divers fetch the statue of child Jesus, that had been placed on the sea bottom, then a fervent procession, and the statue is taken to the church, where the holy mass begins.

If you are in Monterosso during the celebrations of Saint Giovanni Battista, you will be impressed by the procession with all the torches lit, walk along the alleys, and then go to the beach to see the candles floating in the sea at night. Another interesting procession is organized for the feast of Assumption that ends on the hills, in the square in front of the sanctuary of Soviore. Early in the morning, on 14 and 15 August, the bells of the parish church ring to celebrate and attract worshippers.

The gothic church of Saint Giovanni is particulary interesting, it is located in the old part of the town, not far from the sea; the convent of Capuchin Friars and the chur-

ranno il cuore. Oppure, vanto di una tradizione quasi millenaria, siate testimoni della processione per la festa della Assunzione, diretta al piazzale del santuario di Soviore, sulle prime alture. Il 14 e 15 agosto, già di buon mattino, le campane della chiesa parrocchiale suonano a festa, richiamando i fedeli.

Edifici di grande interesse architettonico li individuiamo nella chiesa gotica di San Giovanni Battista, innalzata dove comincia la parte vecchia della città, non lontano dal mare, e nel convento dei frati Cappuccini con annessa la chiesa dedicata a San Francesco, sulla cima della collina di San Cristoforo, posta a separare la zona vecchia della città dalla nuova. Un altro santuario, forse “il santuario”, di immensa importanza poiché considerato uno tra i più antichi d’Italia (menzionato per la prima volta in un documento del 1255) e sicuramente il più antico della Liguria, è quello dedicato alla Madonna di Soviore. L’edificio si trova alle spalle dell’abitato. Monterosso è altresì casa della Sagra del Limone, la terza domenica di maggio, dedicata al frutto tipico e ai suoi derivati culinari.

Per finire, non rinunciate ad un’escursione più ampia ed in barca lungo tutto l’areale del Golfo dei Poeti. Staccarsi dall’Area Marina protetta delle Cinque Terre e approdare tra le rocche colore del ferro dentro cui Portovenere dorme abbarbicata, o scivolare a notte fonda nelle baie di La Spezia, guardare il cielo stellato per una sosta e una birra in quel di Camaiore, daranno la sfumatura di emozione più perfetta, al soggiorno in itinere, che mai turista possa immaginare.

The most important sanctuary, one of the oldest in Italy, and perhaps the oldest in Liguria, is the one devoted to the Virgin Mother of Soviore, we find evidence of the existance of the sanctuary in a document dated 1255, the building is located behind Monterosso, where the Lemon Fair is held every year on the third sunday in May, this fair is dedicated to this typical fruit and its culinary products.

Finally, why not try a boat tour in the Gulf of Poets, exploring the protected marine area of the Cinque Terre, then reach the iron colour rocks, where Portovere is hidden, or why not try a night tour in the bays of La Spezia, looking at the stars and moving towards Tuscany, for a beer in Camaiore, tourists would never imagine the positive benefits of such remarkable itineraries and experiences.
