Riomaggiore, detail

If we take a closer look, and go along the trails we can find myrtle bushes and the typical strawberry trees of the coast, it is clear that the villages were placed on the route followed by Saracen pirates, on ancient dry stone walls, created by craftsmen, primitive hunters and fishermen who have protected and encouraged a territory close to five small villages.

Starting our trip from the municipality of La Spezia and following the directions to reach Genoa, we find the following villages Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare.

Each village has a common history and traditions, but maintains particular differences and personality. For example Monterosso is by the sea, instead Corniglia is located on a cosy hill, if we walk along the steep and quiet alleys in Riomaggiore, with its important past and recent history, we don't feel the same emotions as when we are in Manarola, althought they are both shaped in a similar way, the latter looks as if it had been carved from Ligurian rocks of the Appenine, the guardian and mastermind of this environment, Vernazza stands out for its uniqueness among the most beautiful Italian hamlets. L’ensemble de la contrée, suspendue entre ciel et mer, peut à première vue sembler hostile, mais, à peine on y met un pied, on est envouté par ce territoire vraiment unique au monde !

La végétation est verte et luxuriante et le long des sentiers du littoral ombragés de myrtes et d’arbousiers qui relient les « Cinque Terre » entre elles, on devine les cachettes empruntées par les pirates sarrasins, on découvre les vieux murs de pierres sèches qui délimitent les champs en terrasses. Ici paysans, chasseurs et pêcheurs d’antan ont su protéger, développer et promouvoir le territoire qui entoure ces fameuses Cinq Petites Bourgades.

Tous ces villages, bien que l'histoire et les traditions les unissent, se distinguent par leur propre passé, leur nette particularité et leur forte personnalité.

Par exemple, Monterosso al Mare est une populaire station balnéaire alors que Corniglia vit une sagesse collinaire. Ou bien, Riomaggiore avec ses raides venelles, berceau de l’histoire, se distingue de Manarola bien que la conformation se ressemble. Ce dernier semble jaillir de la masse rocheuse des Apennins liguriens, gardiens de ces lieux. Vernazza, Terre qui brille par son cachet qui lui a valu le classement parmi « I Borghi più Belli d’Italia - les plus Beaux Villages d'Italie ». [à suivre]

Great part of the success of the Cinque Terre is due to the network of trails, that covers an area of 120 kilometres along the coast. A huge heritage of trails, slopes, landscapes and wonderful glimpes, that have always enchanted and fascinated famous people like Dante Alighieri, Boccaccio, Vincenzo Cardarelli, perhaps the most well known is the poet Eugenio Montale, nobel prize in literature in 1975, who was a great expert of the rocky environment of Monterosso. The other four villages have a common environtment, the trails overlooking the sea, are the only roads that connect one village to another, to the inland and the province of La Spezia, leaving its cultural heritage untouched.

The Cinque Terre will remain in the memory of the visitors, also for the typical coloured tower houses, built close to one another, on the slopes of the valley to defend each small bay. Loggias and carved stone portals, with the typical limestone that we also see on the steep slopes, and in Telemaco Signorini's paintings.

Une grande partie du renom des Cinque Terre est dû au réseau capillaire qui silionne 120 kilomètres de sentiers le long du littoral offrant de fabuleuses vues panoramiques. Les Cinque Terre ont emporté dans leur tourbillon des personnages célèbres tels que : Dante Alighieri, Boccaccio, Vincenzo Cardarelli, le plus célèbre : Eugenio Montale, Prix Nobel de la littérature en 1975, grand connaisseur des environs rocheux de Monterosso. Le réseau pédestre représentait autrefois la seule et unique voie de communication qui reliait un village à un autre, l'arrière-pays à la ville La Spezia et ses environs et ce, sans altérer le patrimoine naturel et culturel.

Les Cinque Terre offrent aux visiteurs ses vives couleurs, ses typiques maisons-tours aux façades peintes, calées et compactes dans la roche pour mieux défendre les petits ports des bords de mer.

Loggias et portails sont sculptés dans la pierre typique de la région, l’ardoise, parfois gravée et peinte au XIXe siècle par Telemaco Signorini qui a laissé ses empreintes.

So, briefly which is the heritage of the Cinque Terre?

We can simply use three words: roots, cuisine and independance.

The oldest remains of the area, were found in front of the promontory of Portovenere, a nearby village, they prove that men lived in the Gulf of Poets and in the Cinque Terre during the Paleolithic, in particular inside Grotta dei Colombi, on Palmaria island, that was in fact, in that period, attached to the mainland. Inside the grotto there are weapons and work tools, as well as some well preserved bones, we presume that this area was suitable for hunters, despite the difficulties of the stone age, and the wooded environment quite rich in game, the main resource for men.

There are also some menhirs in the area of Campiglia-Tramonti, considered as the first type of art, well before the stele statues of Lunigiana, inTuscany.

In the pre-roman period, the proud and independent Ligurian tribes represented an obstacle to the expansion of the Roman empire in the territory, that is why the colonizers concentrated their activities in the area of Agro Lunensense, as we can see in remains of Luni.

The social layout and the jurisdiction of the territory, ruled by the strict autarchy lasted till early Middle Ages, then the bishops took the power.

If we want to shed light about the historic roots of the area, we must say that the first inhabitants lived Monterosso and Vernazza, then others followed thanks to the military and political power of Genoa.

The fortresses date back to the sixteenth century, built to contrast the attacks of the Turks and Saracen pirates, when the raids stopped, the Cinque Terre went under the rule of the powerful families Carpena, Da Passano and finally the Fieschi family.

The area went under the “Supreme� Genoa in 1276.

A fruitful trade network, especially of farm products, enriched the local economy, thanks also to the terraced cultivalted hills, especially in the villages of Monterosso and Vernazza, where fishing and sea trade helped to increase the economy, but also the trade of silkworms, as there were mulberry woods.

We should also mention the important cultivation of citrus fruit, mainly lemons and citrons.

Quel est l’héritage des Cinque Terre ?

On le résume en trois mots : Racines, Cuisine, Identité.

A l’est des Cinque Terre s’aiguille le promontoire de Portovenere, petit port de plaisance inséré dans le Golfe des Poètes. Là, ont été retrouvés des vestiges qui témoignent la présence de l’homme dès le Paléolithique. A cette époque, en face de Portovenere, l’île Palmaria avec sa Grotte « Grotta dei Colombi » était reliée au continent.

Les outils, armes et squelettes de l’époque qui ont été retrouvés indiquent combien la végétation et les bosquets de la zone étaient propices aux chasseurs de la faune locale. Des menhirs sont également repérés à Campiglia-Tramonti, considérés les précurseurs des fameuses statues stèles de la région Lunigiana de la Toscane. À l'époque préromaine, les tribus liguriennes représentaient un obstacle important à la romanisation du territoire, forts de leur indépendance, les colonisateurs se concentrèrent alors sur la ville de Luni, ville étrusque aux frontières entre Toscane et Ligurie. La structure sociale et juridique du territoire, régie par l'autarcie stricte de cette dernière, durera jusqu'au début du Moyen Age pour laisser place à une structure plus adaptée aux évêchés.

L’origine des premiers noyaux des Cinque Terre remonte à la protection que Gênes opère sur Monterosso et Vernazza. Plus tard, seulement, grâce au pouvoir militaire et politique de Gênes, les trois autres Villages se développent. Les fortifications massives des lieux du XVIe siècle furent conçues pour contrer les attaques des pillards turcs et sarrasins. La menace cessée, les Cinque Terre subissent la domination des Càrpena, c’est-à-dire des familles Da Passàno et Fieschi, lesquelles passèrent officiellement sous la domination du pouvoir de la “Suprema” en 1276.

Un réseau se met en place et commercialise produits agricoles obtenus de l’extension des champs en terrasses, agrumes, citronniers, orangers, cèdres, puis pêche et échange maritime de Monterosso et Vernazza, élevage et culture du ver à soie présent dans les mûriers et arbousiers. [à suivre]

Monterosso al Mare, old village | Monterosso al Mare, la vieille ville

We can date the origin of Monterosso to the period of the expansion of the Roman Republic, it is said that its inhabitants came from the mythical village of Albareto. Towards mid 1200, after several struggles between the Marine Republic of Pisa and that of Genoa, Monterosso went under the rule of the latter, and increased its maritime activity, as well as the cultivation of wheat and grapes, well protected by dry stone walls in the valley. In recent times, the village developed two different areas, the new area by the sea and the ancient part, built on the hill of Saint Cristoforo, with the fortifications. Walking and sunbathing along the sunny alleys “carrugi”, it is easy to find a place where to stop, in one of the many wine bars, for a glass of the famous local wine “Sciacchetrà”, or why not take a nice walk to the former Convent of the Capuccini Brothers, from which you can enjoy a stunning view. Nowadays Monterosso al Mare, is one of the most appreciated seaside places of the Eastern Ligurian Riviera, so proud of its anchovy daily catch, that a fair is organized every year in June, it is called “Sagra dell'Acciuga Fresca” the Fair of fresh anchovy. L'origine (datable) de Monterosso al mare remonte à l'expansion de la Rome républicaine, mais il se dit que les habitants viennent du village mythique d'Albareto. Vers le milieu de l'an 1200, après des querelles alternées entre la République Maritime de Pise et celle de Gênes, Monterosso se liera à la seconde puissance, sous laquelle il développera l'activité maritime, la culture du blé et celle des vignobles protégés par les murs de pierres sèches. Plus récemment, le petit pays se divise en deux zones, celle du front de mer et la partie antique qui demeure sur la colline de San Cristoforo avec ses fortifications. Là, assis à une terrasse des « carrugi – vennelles » baignée par un rayon de soleil, un verre de "Sciacchetrà" à la main (vin local savoureux) il est bon de rêver.

Une petite visite s’impose à l'ancien Couvent des Capucins où s’ouvre une vue imprenable. Monterosso al mare, aujourd'hui, est l'une des stations balnéaires des plus populaires de la Riviera du Levant ligurien. Vernazza

The name Vernazza probably comes from the family Vulnetia, till year 1000 its inhabitants lived far from the sea, on the hills, ruled by the Da Passano family, then by the Ponzò and Fieschi families, it increased its powers as it was looked after by its goodmother Genoa. This small village is sometimes put on the back burner, but its terraced hills and cultural-historic beauties have nothing to envy to the other villages, for example its coloured houses, built one next to another look like city walls. The village has been inclued in the list of most beautiful villages in Italy.

Its endless carrugi and the steep steps that lead to the bay, the church of Saint Margherita, overlooking the sea, well represent the pionerist spirit of its inhabitants.

Corniglia

Cornelius, a Roman settler was the owner of some well known vineyards, gave the name to the village of Corniglia, re-proposing its Roman origins. Some amphoras of the gentle man were found in Pompeii. The inland is an amazing place, but also the rich marine biodiversity of the seabed, or its scented lemons, are well appreciated, they are used for making slushs and unforgettable afternoons in the square. The best places for swimming are the beaches in Guvano, just under a wide rocky ridge, a well known destinations for nudists from all over the world. [continued on page 22]

Manarola

Even if Manarola has more ancient origins, its area belongs to the municipaly of Riomaggiore, its houses are partially built on a pictoresque spur, touches by the fresh sea, its economy is based on the production of wine and olive oil. According to some academics the name Manarola, comes from a temple devoted to the gods Mani, while others are convinced that it might mention the structure of water windmills, typical of this area. Riomaggiore

Genoa made the area safe, and for this reason the inhabitants left the hills and moved to the valley in year 1000, giving birth to the hamlet by the seafront, there are rumors about the possibility that some Greek refugees created the inhabited the area of Montenero.

Clinged to the rocks, with railings and porticos, stretched on a straight axis where steep steps lead to terraced hills, in years the inhabitants lefts the hills and the hard work in the fields, even if viticulture has had a main role, the Natural Area developed between the Promontory of Punta Mesco on the west and Capo di Montenero on the east, it has become a popular tourist destination for all kind of tourists from all over the world. We should mention the dialect spoken in Riomaggiore, it is known for its peculiar words, uncommon in this area, and not spoken in the nearby hamlets. [continued on page 26]

From Riomaggiore to Monterosso, apart some areas, the cliffs are high, jagged, we hardly bump into inlets and promontories. The villages are located near streams , some of which are underground, but leave room for the residential area, as they flow only for a few kilometers, they are called "canali in local dialect. Vernazzola is the longest, at its mouth stands the village of Vernazza.

The typical territory in the Cinque Terre is made of rocks, in the underlayer, there are erodible schist formations that create deposits and debris. Ophiolites are harder rocks that can be found along the steepest slopes.

We can also find iron and magnesium deposits.

Sandstone can be found in the cliff between Monterosso and Riomaggiore. The territory of the Cinque Terre can be discovered easily crossing its many trails among the woods, or exploring the underwater routes, diving in the rich waters of the Marine reserve, or taking the boat.

An excellent and cheap way to visit this area and its villages is by train, which is in fact widely used both by tourists and inhabitants; regional trains run quite frequently, and even in the evening. The Cinque Terre National Park grants you the opportunity to buy a "5 Terre Card", which includes both the entrance to the trails, unlimited travels by train, or a daily unlimited ticket, on ecological buses another good option for travelling.

Forget about parking and get yourself a bike or a comfortable trekking equipment, for your stay. The villages have different levels of difficulty, but all the trails are easily accessible with a minimum training, suitable clothing and favourable weather conditions.

Don't forget to follow CAI signs,along your trail you will find some refreshment areas, terraces and coves where you can take a break. The main trails in the Cinque Terre are Sentiero Azzurro, Sentiero dell'Alta Via and Strada dei Santuari [continued on page 34]

Les Cinque Terre ont une prédominance rocheuse, la nature lithogénique du substrat, dont les formations schisteuses sont friables forment des dépôts et des débris. Des formations ophiolitiques plus résistantes ont donné naissance aux pentes abruptes. Il existe aussi des dépôts riches en fer et en magnésium. Les grès représentent la démarcation de la falaise formée entre Monterosso et Riomaggiore.

Le territoire des Cinque Terre se découvre tranquillement au travers du réseau de chemins de randonnée qui côtoient la végétation. Quant ’à la réserve marine, elle aussi particulièrement riche et mystérieuse, elle se découvert à bord d’un bateau pour y effectuer des plongées sportives.

Le train est un moyen de locomotion particulièrement efficace, simple et économique pour fureter les Cinque Terre. Un train régional régulier et fréquent dessert chaque village du matin au soir et toute l’année.

Le Parc National des Cinque Terre propose la "5 Terre Card" qui comprend : entrées gratuites aux sentiers payants, trajets illimités en train ou en bus écologiques. En période d’été, l’usage de la voiture est vivement déconseillé car les parkings (payants) disponibles sont limités. Les Cinque Terre est un lieu par excellence pour la randonnée.

Tous les sentiers sont balisés CAI (Club Alpins Italien). La difficulté varie selon la morphologie du terrain, toutefois tous les parcours sont parcourables, un peu d’entrainement suffit. Pour affronter les étapes, il convient d’avoir de bonnes chaussures de marche et de s’habiller avec le système multicouche selon la saison. Le long des tronçons, aires de repos, terrasses, criques, kiosques permettent de faire des pauses afin d’avancer à son propre rythme. Parmi les nombreux sentiers, citons : le Sentiero Azzurro, le Sentiero dell'Alta Via et le Sentiero della Strada dei Santuari.

Sentiero Azzurro connects all the villages from Riomaggiore to Monterosso, you will see amazing landscapes, strongly influenced by man, at present some areas are closed for maintenance. It is a dozen kilometres long.

The part that goes from Riomaggiore to Manarola is the most famous trail in the world, it is called Via dell'Amore, closed at present for works, it will be probably reopened only in 2021.

Sentiero dell'Alta Via is a long and tiring trail, but not dangerous, which dominates the whole landscape of the Cinque Terre, CAI path n. 1; forty kilometres long, it starts from Portovenere and goes as far as Levanto.

Strada dei Santuari connects the places of worship of the villages located halfway up the hills, it is problably the easiest path, even on horseback.

There is a picturesque trail on the slope that leads to the nudist beach Guvano, it is also connected to a secondary trail between Corniglia and Vernazza.

The trail was created among lush terraced vineyards, it starts from the train station in Riomaggiore, in via Telemaco Signorini, and passes through the villages of Volastra and Groppo, you will be able to reach Corniglia in about three hours. A wonderful trail with impervious landscapes among woods and streams.

On the Italian territory we can find more than twenty natural parks, and yet, the interaction between man and environment in the Cinque Terre, has created an expectional, valuable landscape, evidence of an important socio-economic role in people's life.

Le premier itinéraire relie tous les villages entre eux, de Riomaggiore à Monterosso. Cette randonnée d’une douzaine de kilomètres environ, longe le littoral en offrant des panoramas incroyables, vus des monts ou du littoral selon les endroits. Ce parcours est fortement pénétré par l'homme, d’ailleurs certaines tranches sont parfois fermées pour effectuer l’entretien extraordinaire afin d’assurer la maximum sécurité aux randonneurs. Le sentier, le plus célèbre au monde, qui relie Riomaggiore à Manarola, est appelé “La Via Dell’ Amore”, aujourd’hui fermé pour travaux, il sera réouvert en 2021.

Le deuxième itinéraire, sentier 1 du CAI (Club Alpins Italien), 40 kms, va de Portovenere à Levanto. Sa longue et fatigante marche ne présente aucune difficulté mais a l’avantage d’offrir de magnifiques vues sur les Cinque Terre.

Le troisième itinéraire, le Sentier des Sanctuaires, relie à mi-colline les lieux de culte qui unissaient les villages.

Ce parcours est le plus facile, à faire même à cheval.

Entre Corniglia et Vernazza, il y a un sentier pittoresque et abrupt qui mène à la plage de Guvano, réservée aux naturistes.

Il y a une piste créée au milieu des vignobles en terrasses qui démarre via Telemaco Signorini de la gare de Riomaggiore, passe par Volastra, Groppo et rejoint Corniglia en un peu plus de trois heures, sentier qui unit paysages, panoramas, bois et ruisseaux qui baignent la végétation.

Le territoire national italien regroupe plus de vingt parcs naturels. L'interaction ordonnée entre l'homme et l'environnement aux Cinque Terre produit un résultat d'une valeur exceptionnelle qui donne un rôle socioéconomique important au sein de la société locale. [à suivre]

That of the Cinque Terre is the smallest National Park in Italy, 3860 hectares but at the same time it is the most densely populated, thanks to its villages.

The steep and very jagged coast has been tamed over the millennia, as man, the only mastermind of these terraces, has been able to snatch a few hectares of land and use it for the cultivation of vines and olive trees.

The settlements of Corniglia and Manarola well explain this interaction, as they were built directly on the rocks, their features are what makes this territory so special.

If it is true that the natural environment has been strongly shaped by man, then we should start calling it "Man's Park".

Close to this area there is the Regional Natural Park of Portovenere, that includes the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, and the Marine Protected Area of the Cinque Terre, that goes from the picturesque area of Tramonti up to the municipality of Monterosso.

Traveling starboard towards France, challenging the waves, you might hear the sound of some whales: this area is included in the "Sanctuary Pelagos", established in 1999, for the protection of marine mammals in the Mediterranean.

This sanctuary faces the border with France, it is estimated to have about a thousand whales, rorquals, sperm whales, striped dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and common dolphins, attracted by the mild climate and the temperatures of the water, both important and necessary for food and reproduction. Les 3860 hectares du Parc des Cinque Terre est le plus petit parc national d'Italie bien qu’il soit le plus dense au niveau de la population et ce grâce à la présence des bourgs des 5 Terre. Le parc englobe une aire marine protégée qui regroupe en son sein trois communes : Monterosso al mare, Vernazza, Riomaggiore et une partie des communes de Levanto (Punta Mesco) et de la Spezia (Campiglia et Tramonti).

La côte escarpée et échancrée a été apprivoisée au cours des millénaires par l’homme qui a créé une agriculture en terrasses adaptée aux vignobles et oliveraies. Les premiers habitants de Corniglia et de Manarola sont pratiquement nés sur les falaises qui les entourent ce qui rend les lieux particulièrement fascinants, si le site a été profondément modifié par l'action humaine, par équation on peut parler du "Parc de l'Homme".

A côté, se situe le Parc Naturel Régional de Portovenere qui comprend le territoire de la commune de Portovenere ainsi que les îles Palmaria, Tino et Tinetto.

L’Aire Marine Protégée autour des Cinque Terre a été instituée par le décret ministériel le 12 décembre 1997 et s’étend d’ouest en est de Punta Mesco à Punta di Montenero, eaux qui se trouvent devant le Parc Nazionale des Cinque Terre.

Le Sanctuaire Pelagos méditerranéen qui englobe les eaux de la Riviera du Levant est un espace maritime de 87 500 km² faisant l’objet d’un accord entre l’Italie, Monaco et la France pour protéger les mammifères marins qui le fréquentent.

Cette faune marine fait l'objet d'une activité écotouristique qui se développe de plus en plus où demeurent des cétacés et bien d’autres espèces. [à suivre]

Volastra

The beauty of the Park of Man ows much to its flora and fauna, great part of the Cinque Terre park, is covered by Mediterranean maquis, thanks to the cool microclimate, climbing up its hills, you will notice that the vegetation becomes more generous: there are holm oak woods, pine trees, Aleppo pines, chestnut woods and cork trees that cover the hills, while above the sea, among coves and inlets, grow aromatic plants such as rosemary, thyme, helichrysum, lavender, euphorbia, and marine dauco. More than six hundred types of native plants and species have been listed.

The fauna in the Cinque Terre mainly consists of wild animals weasels, badgers, foxes and wild boars. The avifauna includes yellow legged gulls, cormorants, peregrine falcons, jays and crows, and red-tailed birds, goldfinches and even pheasants and partridges.

The valley of the Rio Maggiore, from which one of the five hamlets takes its name, is watched over by Mount Verugola, depicted in the coat of arms of the village of Riomaggiore. The inhabited area of this village stretches along two valleys, separated by the steep peak Carpione, on its lower part stands the castle, here visitors can breath the salty air of the coast and smell the lovely scents of the cultivated gardens.

In the Municipality of Riomaggiore, the three hamlets of Manarola, Volastra and Groppo, are proper people oriented rural areas, watched over by the Ligurian Apennines, with amazing views of the vineyards located on the terraced hills, if we're lucky we might even see some buzzards hovering in the sky. Volastra, has been isolated for over twenty years, this hamlet is located on the hills behind Manarola, is a charming destination and one of the places of production of the famous liquer wine.

From Manarola you can reach Vernazza, and the Sanctuary of Madonna di Reggio, through a path, surrounded by thick Mediterranean maquis. The sanctuary was built as place of pilgrimage; along the path you can admire some vows left by worshippers, representing the various steps of the Via Crucis.

Monterosso, has a natural appeal and seems the most visited village, mainly because of its wide sandy beach Fegina, considered by a well-known American magazine, as one of the 25 best beaches in the world. In fact Monterosso has the longest beaches and most popular areas. In Monterosso experts have examined the sea bottom and the coast, and created a series of routes for expert divers, and the first virtual aquarium of the Cinque Terre, with three dimensional videos that broadcast sea life, and a guided tour dedicated to its hidden depths.

The new structure is inside the former Tortuga restaurant, built inside the rocks, that separates the old village from the new village, right in front of Aurora Tower.

The goal is to protect this very important stretch of sea, its wildlife, and the high concentration of cetaceans and pelagic fish.

The Cinque Terre Protected Marine Area has a particular approach to these matters, very respectful for such a precious area.

The coastline, includes two reservation areas A, and two general areas B, closed in between Punta Mesco and Capo Montenero, a place that has an extraordinary variety of animals and plants, protecting all species and enhancing the marine biodiversity characteristics , helped by scientists whose aim is to spread knowledge of the protected area.

La Parc des Cinque Terre appelé aussi le Parc de l'Homme héberge une riche flore et faune. Le maquis méditerranéen, grâce au microclimat, recouvre les collines surplombant la mer de forêts de chênes verts, pins, pins d'Alep, châtaigniers et chêne-liège. Quant ’aux espaces côtiers, la douceur du climat donne naissance à plus de six cents espèces végétales endémiques tels que le romarin, thym, hélichryse, lavande, euphorbe, fenouil, plantes aromatiques…

La faune des Cinque Terre comprend les animaux de forêt à fourrure tels que la belette, le blaireau, le renard ou le sanglier… L'avifaune comprend goélands, cormorans, faucons pèlerins, geais, corneilles, buses et des spécimens à plume tels que le rouge-queue, le chardonneret, les faisans, perdrix et tant d’autres.

La vallée du Rio Maggiore qui donne son nom au village Riomaggiore est surmontée par le mont Verugola, emblème des lieux. Les deux versants habités sont séparés par la crête Campione qui abrite en son pied un château.

Tout au long du parcours au travers des jardins cultivés le visiteur réchauffé par des rayons de soleil respire l'air sain de la mer. La commune de Riomaggiore regroupe, autre que son centre urbain trois hameaux : Manarola, Groppo et Volastra, réalités rurales avec les Apennins liguriens en arrière-plan, lesquels ouvrent une vue sur vignobles, oliveraies et cultures en terrasses.

La perchée Volastra, isolée pendant vingt ans est devenue aujourd’hui une destination convoitée grâce à sa tranquillité, son panorama et est l’un des sites plus renommé de la production du célèbre vin liquoreux, le Sciacchetrà. Sur le chemin qui va de Manarola vers Vernazza, bordé de vœux religieux illustrant les stations du Chemin de Croix, on rejoint le Sanctuaire de la Madonna di Reggio, lieu de pèlerinage d’autrefois.

Monterosso, semble être le petit pays le plus visité, et ce grâce à sa grande plage de sable fin : Fegina, laquelle est classée par un magazine américain parmi les 25 plages plus sexy du monde. En effet, Monterosso est la seule localité des Cinque terre qui possède une plage qui puisse accueillir un grand nombre de baigneurs.

Monterosso se distingue pour avoir étudié les fonds marins du littoral, il a été créé une série d'itinéraires pour plongeurs professionnels. Un aquarium virtuel, le premier des Cinque terre, a été réalisé dans l'ex restaurant Tortuga, lequel fut creusé dans la roche entre la nouvelle et l’ancienne partie du petit pays en face de la majestueuse Tour Aurora. Là, vidéos tridimensionnelles racontent la vie sous-marine des lieux.

Les objectifs de ceux qui protègent ce tronçon de mer, très important pour la faune marine qui accueille une forte concentration de cétacés et de poissons pélagiques voient de mauvais œil le tourisme de masse alors qu’ils préféreraient un tourisme limité composé de vrais connaisseurs.

L’Aire Marine Protégée des Cinque Terre qui s’étend de Punta Mesco à Punta Montenero est divisée en deux zones : A et B. Ces fonds marins sont considérés parmi les plus variés et les plus riches en faune marine de la Ligurie. L’AMP protège et valorise les caractéristiques de la biodiversité marine et côtière, investit au niveau des travaux de la restauration de l’environnement, en utilisant la collaboration du monde scientifique, en promouvant la recherche, formant des laboratoires et ce dans le but de divulguer la connaissance de cette zone sous protection.

Food a nd w i ne Biological consortia, local grown products strictly used according to the season, but also starred restaurants able to reinvent the traditional recipies of the farmers and seamen, are part of the local cuisine. To be honest, the cuisine in the Cinque Terre is not just a break to satisfly your hunger, but it's a true gem, a very important part of the tourism, and of its roots.

Just think about the delicious pesto sauce, people have always thought that it has a Genoese origin, instead the steep slopes terraces of this area, are in fact one of the places where basil is grown and looked after like a son.

There are farms that organize courses on how to prepare it, using a marble mortarl and pestle like granmother used to do, with precious DOP products strictly from this coast, and the scents brought by the winds that might remind us of a table laid for an aperitif or for dinner.

We should also consider the rich, ancient tradition of the fishing boats, the daily catch based on anchovies, snappers and sea breams ..... there are strict rules in order to protect the Marine Protected Area, and help the environment , the quantity of fish caught is determined before hand.

We could consider fishermen as symbols of culture and tradition thanks to their many initiatives, and boat tours, to explain more about their work, and how important it is for the territory.

When we talk about Cinque Terre, we think about daily catch, fish and shell fish dishes, ancient crops (vineyards and olive groves), and scented aromatic plants, such as borage, thyme, rosemary, sage, often used in recipes, they grow well incouraged by the favourable climate.

Lean meat is rarely used in traditional dishes, because the shape of the area does not allow livestock like in the farms in Tuscany.

The park offers great natural resources, mushrooms, agrumes and chestnuts, this fruit in particular is used to make various dishes and cakes, the many scented spontaneous herbs, become the main ingredients of various recipes, as well as olive oil, which is also used in cosmetics.

Basically recipes use both sea and land ingredients, dishes are light and scented even if extremely simple, in winter they are obviously richer in flavour and ingredients for the sustenance of the families.

Where farmer cultivate the land, with vineyards and olive groves, we can also find small animals, such as poultry and rabbits, used in many recipes, mixed bean soups and vegetables replace dishes with shellfish and pasta with sauces, we can find troffie or trofie, a short type of handmade spiral shaped pasta, corzetti, trenette with pesto sauce, adding boiled potatoes and green beans, pansotti and ravioli stuffed with borage and served with walnut sauce, these are all typical, local dishes. In Corniglia don't forget to taste the delicious icecream made with the famous local honey, a really yummy snack.

As alredy mentioned the recipe of the real pesto sauce is disputed in the various Ligurian provinces. There are proper rules on how to make it, you need the best basil, which is the key ingredient, extra vergin olive oil, parmigiano reggiano cheese or seasoned pecorino, sweet garlic, cooking salt and pine nuts; the sauce obtained from these ingredients is a perfect match with pasta, the recipe tells that pasta must be boiled in pure water with green beans and potatoes.

Those who make pesto sauce, don't follow cooking books, and don't weigh the ingredients, everyone has its favourite techique, you may find this sauce on a focaccia or spread on a bruschetta as aperitif, or even added at the last moment in a minestrone, the typical vegetable soup.

If you go to a restaurant in Monterosso and Vernazza, the place of honour goes to fish dishes, among the many you must try stuffed anchovies, or mussels, called muscles in local dialect, a popular and special dish in the area of La Spezia and Cinque Terre. You can eat them with a sprinkle of lemon juice, or stuffed with bread, garlic, parsley and parmigiano cheese, particulary appreciated by tourists.

Main courses no longer use lean meat and scents from the kitchen gardens, but you will find fish ravioli, fish soups, a rich Genoese vegetable soup (minestrone), a link between sea and land.

Monterosso has made a fortune with its anchovies, you can find them fried, stuffed or in a timballo, fried like cutlets, or fried with other seasonal fish, the locals call it sea bread.

Anchovies can be found in many dishes made by the local housewifes, who know well that this fish is rich in nutritious elements and the same time cheap to buy.

In the Cinque and surrounding areas you can find popular fairs, with oily fish dishes, especially the famous anchovies from Monterosso.

Whitebait of anchovies and sardines can be found in soups, or fried in hot olive oil. Nowadays whitebait catch is protected and safeguarded, in the past it was quite common to find them fried in a batter with flour, eggs and fizzy water.

As fritters need a lot of ingredients, nowadays it is better to eat courgette fritters, the so called “Fris de Burbugiun”, an excellent summer sidedish.

A typical dish in Vernazza and Monterosso is “tian” (pan in local dialect), it is made with sliced potatoes, anchovies seasoned with local olive oil, white wine, garlic, lemon zest and fresh tomatoes, a sort of 42 CinqueCinque Terre Terre icons icons

In Riomaggiore taking advantage of the ancient farmers' culture the main dish is obviously based on land ingredients, it is a savoury rice cake, prepared with boiled rice, olive oil, salt, pepper, and baked in the oven, it is made to celebrate the patron Saint Giovanni Battista. This rice cake has nothing to do with the one made in Tuscany, or with the so called “silly cake” made in Sarzana The recipe of this rice cake is well kept, it can be considered a main course, made by housewives especially in winter, there is a similar recipe in Monterosso, where it is made for the celebration of the Virgin mother in Soviore.

In winter a common dish is the veggie soup, made with wild herbs and seasoned with olive oil, let the potatoes simmer in hot water, then add wild herbs, radicchio salad, chard, and valerian. As regards fish you can find stockfish, salted anchovies in extra vergin olive oil and fried panissa made with chickpea flour just like farinata, in the past century it was considered a left over dish, eaten adding different dressings.

The treasures of the woods and inland let the Cinque Terre become the unofficial homeland of the chestnut cake, the so called castagnaccio or pattona, in local dialect castagnàsu. Great importance have local ingredients such as pine nuts, strawberries, figs, artichokes, and asparagus, and marmelade made with local citrus fruit.

Talking about dessert, you must try Monterossina cake, a true sin of gluttony, it is a soft sponge cake filled with apricot jam and bits of dark chocolate, there is a similar cake in Vernazza, called Stalìn, the name of the eccentric baker who created it, the cake has a thick layer of jam, two layers of thick custard and chocolate cream, inside a shell of shortcut pastry, Artisan ice creams can be found in Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, where there are proper workshops, thanks to the organic local fruit and the variety of ingredients used, the flavours obtained are really unusual.

The quality of the Cinque Terre wine, was already well known at the time of Plinio, in the first century before Christ, he thought that it was the best in Etruria, and after him Boccaccio and Dante praised its qualities.

Passito is another timeless DOC wine in the Cinque Terre, it has a suggestive name Sciacchetrà, from "sciacàa that means to press. The colour can be straw-yellow or amber if aged, the flavour is broad, sweet, fruity, and smooth. It is an ideal wine to finish your meal The production of this wine is allowed only in some areas of the province of La Spezia.

Another excellent local wine, is Cinque Terre DOC, a white dry wine, a perfect match with soups and fish main courses, it is made in Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. This white wine is obtained by pressing Bosco grapes, as well as Vermentino and Albarola grapes. To finish you should try “Limoncino di Monterosso”, a popular scented liquer, that you will also find at the Lemon Fair in Pentecoste. In the Cinque Terre, the final goal of food and wine is to obtain a general, sustainable development process, that improves the quality of life, a meal becomes an unforgettable experience, to demonstrate that competitiveness and environmental sustainability go hand in hand, and can find a happy match at a table.

Œnogastronomie Coopératives de produits biologiques, du producteur au consommateur, production et récolte selon les saisons, restaurants étoilés qui réintroduisent sur les tables la tradition culinaire de la terre et de la mer des Cinque Terre. Voilà la gastronomie locale !

La cuisine des Cinque Terre est un moment convivial pour petits et grands, encas coupe faim mais aussi dégustation pour fins gourmets.

Les recettes typiques qui véhiculent la tradition culinaire des lieux sont présentent sur tout le territoire au déjeuner comme au dîner.

Le Pesto ! défini génois par erreur puisque le basilic qui le compose est né comme un vrai fils sur les cultures en terrasses des pentes des Cinque Terre. Ici, de petites fabriques dispersées enseignent les secrets de la préparation du Pesto en utilisant un mortier comme le faisaient les grands-mères. Le terroir offre des ingrédients AOP dont les arômes activent les papilles gustatives dès l’arrivée des mets sur les tables.

La Pêche ! Les bateaux des pêcheurs locaux ramènent quotidiennement sur les quais des petits ports dorades, brèmes, rougets, anchois…

L’ensemble des lois établies pour préserver l’Aire Marine Protégée contribue à maintenir l’équilibre des fonds marins. L’initiative de prendre à bord des bateaux de pêche des touristes lors des sorties en mer renforce les valeurs de la vie au naturel.

Les Herbes Aromatiques (bourrache, thym, romarin, sauge et autres) dont regorgent les Cinque Terre poussent spontanément grâce au doux climat qui leur est favorable ; leurs parfums et arômes font parties du secret des mets liguriens.

Vin - Huile – Légumes - Fruits: les Cinq Terres sont réputées pour la production et la qualité de ces derniers ingrédients extrêmement précieux à l’enogastronomie.

Toutes ces senteurs et l’huile d’olive sont employées pour fabriquer une gamme de cosmétiques qui contribue à l'économie de la région.

Les viandes sont peut utilisées dans la cuisine puisque le territoire accidenté des lieux ne permet pas l’élevage à grande échelle qui est plutôt réservé à la Toscane.

Le Parc des Cinque Terre, à l’automne, offre aux passionnés, champignons de différentes espèces et châtaignes. Ces dernières sont utilisées pour la confection de gâteaux typiques ou sortes de petites crêpes.

La gastronomie locale alterne en toute saison les produits de la mer et ceux de la terre tout en conservant la légèreté des spécialités culinaires locaux. Les mets sont extrêmement simples, parfumés et suffisamment riches pour alimenter tous les palais.

Les vignerons des alentours qui cultivent aussi les oliveraies élèvent très souvent lapins et volaille, légumes et fruits dans potagers et vergers. Ils sont couramment les fournisseurs des matières premières des restaurants qui transforment les produits en soupes, consommés ou sauces pour servir les pâtes.

Par exemple: les Troffie ou Trofie, pâtes courtes tournées à la main – les Corzetti ou les Trenette au pesto ou servis avec pommes de terre et haricots verts – les Pansotti et les Ravioli farcis de bourache servis sauce au noix. A Corniglia, existe une friandise locale : la glace au miel des apiculteurs des environs, à déguster sans excuse !

La recette du vrai Pesto est chicanée par diverses localités de la Ligurie bien que la recette impose : basilic (ingrédient clé), huile d'olive extra vierge, Parmesan Reggiano ou pecorino vieilli, ail doux, gros sel, pignons. La sauce ainsi obtenue sera utilisée selon la fantaisie des cuisiniers amateurs ou professionnels. Ici sur les collines, le Pesto est fabriqué sans respecter les précises proportions, il est fait comme on dit « à-peu-près ». La sauce obtenue est prête pour être servie avec différentes sortes de pâtes ou pour farcir la focaccia ou pour beurrer des bruschettes tièdes, ou pour ajouter une cuillère de ce mélange au minestrone.

Les restaurants de Monterosso, Vernazza et d’autres localités des alentours proposent surtout des plats à base de poisson : Anchois farcis, Muscoli - Moules avec zeste de citron, Moules farcies (mie de pain, ail, persil, mortadelle, œuf, parmesan) (les moules ainsi préparées sont très prisées par les touristes), Raviolis farcis au poisson, Soupes au poisson, Minestrone à la génoise…

Monterosso et ses Anchois, une fortune ! En effet, ils sont appelés des locaux le « pain de la mer ». On les trouve à toutes les sauces : frits, farcis, en timbale, en côtelette, en friture, sous sel, au citron, au vinaigre… jusqu’à la Sagra dell’Asciuga – Fête de l’Anchois. Les anchois sont très souvent utilisés pour confectionner les plats des Cinque Terre, c'est un poisson bon marché bien que nourrissant et riche en vitamines.

Le « Gianchetti – le lançon », préparé en soupe ou frit dans l’huile d'olive. Si le lançon abonde, alors des beignets sont confectionnés et enrobés d’une pâte à frire (farine et œufs) avant de plonger dans la friture.

Les “Fris de Burbugiun – fleurs de courgettes frites”, spécialité du coin, le matin, lorsque la fleur de courgette est ouverte, elle est cueillie et sera préparée pour accompagner le plat de résistance.

Le « Tian - qui signifie littéralement casserole » de Vernazza et Monterosso est un plat complet qui se présente un peu comme des lasagnes. Il est composé d’ingrédients qui rassemblent terre et mer : pomme de terre en lamelles, anchois, huile d’olive locale, vin blanc, ail, zeste de citron et tomate fraîche. À Riomaggiore, la culture est tantôt paysanne, tantôt des bords de mer. Le gâteau de riz salé illustre parfaitement ce premier aspect. Cette spécialité, préparée comme

Pour compléter la panoplie : Stoccafisso - morue salée, Anchois à l’huile, Farinata (pâte de farine de pois chiches cuite au four à bois), Panissa (pâte de farina de pois chiches bouille, refroidie, aplatie, coupée en dés ou en lamelles et frite).

En automne, les bosquets et bois des environs plantés de châtaigniers laissent tomber leurs fruits qui sont récoltés, séchés et transformés en une savoureuse et délicieuse farine qui servira à confection le fameux « Castagnaccio appelé aussi Castagnàsu ou Pattona en dialecte. Il s’agit d’un gâteau de farine de châtaignes fait sans levure avec pignons des pins des environs et raisins de Corinthe.

Les vergers et jardins des Cinque Terre permettent la fabrication artisanale de confiture d’oranges, de fraises, de figues, de citrons, d’abricots sans oublier les légumes de saison dont le surplus est transformé en « Sotto 0lio – sous huile) tels que les artichauts, poireaux, courgettes, asperges, aubergines…

Les desserts ! La Tourte Monterossina, péché mignon ! Génoise farcie de confiture d'abricot saupoudrée d’écailles de chocolat fondant. Très similaire, « La Stalìn de Vernazza » nom donné par son excentrique créateur : tarte brisée qui enveloppe et couvre une couche de confiture de fruits superposée d’une épaisse couche de crème pâtissière et d’une couche de crème au chocolat !

Le Vin ! La qualité du vin des Cinque Terre remonte à Pline l’Ancien – Ier siècle ap J.C. qui le nomma le meilleur de l'Étrurie, après lui, Boccaccio et Dante en ont vanté ses qualités. Le Sciacchetrà dont le nom vient de sciacàa – écraser - est un vin moelleux intemporel des Cinque Terre, produit DOC. De couleur jaune paille tendant vers l'ambre si légèrement vieilli, bouquet ample et fruité, velouté au palais, bien que doux et liquoreux, il accompagne fort bien les fins de repas. Sa production est autorisée et reconnue uniquement dans certaines communes du département de La Spezia. Excellent aussi « Le Cinque Terre DOC », c’est un vin blanc sec de table, parfait pour les potages et les plats à base de poisson. Ce vin produit à Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza et Monterosso al Mare est obtenu des cépages Bosco, Vermentino et Albarola.

Many agritourims organize food tasting of the typical local dishes and excursions on foot or by bike, in the surrounding areas, to pamper the guests and let them discover little by little this magic territory.

Consorzio Marittimo Turistico 5 Terre-Golfo dei Poeti and its ferries provide the cheapest and most convenient way to visit the various villages on the coast, from end of March to beginning of Novemeber, you will fill your eyes with the beauties of the territory, the impressive rocks that overlook the sea.

You can take a ferry in one of the following places, Levanto, Portovenere, Lerici and La Spezia, but you can even find a ferry in Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi that leads to the Cinque Terre, or Portofino, ferries stop in all the bays along the eastern coast.

It would be a pity if you missed a trip to the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, as well as to Capraia island.

You can spend your day in one of the villages, or try an excursion in the afternoon. Since 2001 there is the possibility of buying a Cinque Terre Card, there are two types of cards Trekking Card and Treno MS card, that provide facilities and discounts.

If you are staying in one of the many hotels in Riomaggiore, Vernazza or Monterosso, you can buy this card, at favourable conditions, with a voucher given by the hotel, or you can buy it in one of the info points of the park and online. The money gained from the sale of the card is donated for the maintenance of the territory, to improve the services of the area.

Moving in the Cinque Terre with the help of this special card will be very simple, especially using trains. The railway line is widespread, all the villages of the Cinque Terre, have a railway station and are on the efficient railway line Genoa-La Spezia, from Levanto, the "gateway to the Cinque Terre", it is possible to reach the western Ligurian and Versilia, in Tuscany. Le réseau routier est capillaire et permet de visiter et d’admirer les Cinq Terres de la fenêtre du véhicule sans rien perdre de ses beautés. La typique morphologie du territoire escarpé et échancré réduit et ressert les espaces vitaux, ceci pour noter que le stationnement est difficile, les parkings sont rares, couteux, et souvent pleins. Il est donc fort préconisé di visiter les 5 Terre en train, en bus ou avec l’efficace service navette. Les structures d’hébergement des Cinque Terre mettent à disposition toutes les informations nécessaires, dépliants, cartes, sentiers de randonnées, ferries, restaurants, plages …afin que le visiteur puisse en toute tranquillité organiser son emploi du temps. Les Cinque Terre et les bourgs des alentours sont remplis d’agritourismes, Bed & Breakfast, chambres d’Hôte, restaurants et auberges.

Hors-saison, aucune difficulté ne se présente pour séjourner alors que durant les autres périodes il est fort conseillé de réserver sa place pour dormir. Le Consorzio Marittimo Turistico 5 Terre-Golfo dei Poeti est le nom du service maritime côtier. Sa flotte composée de 15 embarcations gère différentes lignes qui couvrent une partie du littoral toscan et ligurien qui va d’est en ouest de Viareggio à Portofino. Pratique, rapide, économique, ce moyen de transport a l’avantage d’échapper à la circulation estivale mais surtout d’offrir un regard alternatif sur la conformation et sur les couleurs du littoral. Des lignes effectuent de mini-croisières vers les iles toscanes, l’ile de la Capraia en est un exemple. Le service du consortium fonctionne à partir du mois de mars jusqu’à la fin octobre.

Le Parc National des Cinque Terre propose la « 5 Terre Card » dans ses différentes versions et selon les nécessités de chacun, de la famille ou du groupe. Disponible pour un deux ou trois jours - valable pour sentiers, trains ou ferries, la 5 Terre Card offre de nombreux avantages selon la formule choisie. La Carte peut être achetée aux bureaux d’accueil des 5 Terre, en ligne, aux gares, au départ des certaines randonnées ou sur les bus qui couvrent les trajets à l’intérieur du Parc des Cinque Terre. Many are the outdoor activities which can be done in the five wonderful villages, ravines and caves, in the Marine Protected Area, are real treasures for snorkeling lovers, rocky sea bottoms, bays, the shape of the cliffs and the prehistoric caves add mystery to every experience.

For example, diving in the Gulf of Monterosso al Mare, in front of the beach is an essential experience,on the sea bottom there is the wreck of a German landing craft covered with gorgonians. In Monterosso you can also take a kayak or have the opportunity to dive in the Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area, observer and discover the various species of the seabed.

Whale watching is an activity that can be done well in this area, you will see cetaceans difficult to see elsewhere, thanks to the chilly and calm waters, the currents carry nutritious plankton in the whole stretch of coast under the protection of Pelagos Sanctuary. [continued on page 64]

Des Clubs de voile sont éparpillés sur tout le littoral pour ceux qui désirent apprendre à vivre avec les forces des courants et du vent. Le surf, windsurf ou bodyboard sont également pratiqués sur certaines stations lorsque le climat apporte de fortes ou moyennes tempêtes propices à ce type de sport, par exemple à Marina di Massa, Lerici, Levanto, localités où du matériel de location est disponible. La baignade est praticable sur toute la côte grâce aux eaux claires et chaudes. Pour les experts du diving, de nombreux endroits des environs permettent de faire de magnifiques plongeons en se lançant des falaises plus ou moins hautes.

Toute la portion de côte qui va de Bocca di Magra à Portofino cache de magnifiques et nombreuses grottes sous-marines qui peuvent être visitées en bateau, en plongée libre ou apnée. A visiter la grotte "Maemuna" « Azzura » « Byron » « Dell’Eremite » « Del Tinetto » et bien d’autres encore.

D’est en ouest, en partant du Golfe de la Spezia, se trouve la localité Campiglia - Tramonti qui ne fait pas partie des Cinque Terre mais qui est remarquable au point de vue paysages. C’est une fraction de la commune de La Spezia, située à 400 mètres d’altitude sur la crête vallonnée qui entoure le golfe.

Aux pieds de Campiglia-Tramonti, c’est-àdire au fond de 2020 marches, se cache la très belle plage de galets et de rochers du Persico. Endroit désert mais si paisible grâce à sa particulière position. [à suivre]

Riomaggiore is the first village that you see coming from La Spezia, when you get off the train go through the tunnel, then down towards the marina, and to the left, near the Cinque Terre ferry landing, there is a bathing area. Another charming beach is that of Canneto, located between Punta Castagna and Punta Cavo, you can only reach it on foot, there is a strip of pebbles and a natural waterfall that comes from the hill. We have to point out that the sea gets quite deep in Riomaggiore, so be careful when you go swimming. This village lived exclusively on agriculture, in particular vine cultivation, it helped the local economy to developed in the Cinque Terre; the beauty of the terraced hills, the hard work of the past generations, have transformed these steep slopes cultivable, the village of Riomaggiore welcomes tourists from all over the world, eager to challenge these hard and unique places. Riomaggiore, premier village des 5 Terre en venant du golfe des poètes après avoir traversé un tunnel, typique petite bourgade de pêcheur reconnue, comme les autres Terre, un chef-d’œuvre de la nature. Village agrippé à la falaise qui se protège des intempéries et qui se confond au décor rocheux. Le débarcadère relie différentes destinations dont la plage de galets du Canneto, inaccessible par route, qui se situe entre Punta Castagna et Punta del Cavo. La particularité de cet endroit est la cascade d’eau naturelle qui descend de la colline semblable à une douche. Une autre plage de galets se situe aux pieds de la voie ferrée juchée sur la roche. The fishermen village par excellence in the Cinque Terre is Manarola, surrounded by a natural barrier of cliffs overlooking the sea, it is an ideal place for landscape lovers or for people who love loneliness and quiet, but nothing prevents you from sitting on the pier for an energising siesta. The shape of the village reminds us of a fan, developed in front of the main street, with colourful tower-houses, the Gothic church of Saint Lorenzo, with a particular concrete pyramid that stands out from the roofs of the houses. Brave hikers should be informed that above Manarola, far from the beach but where you will still able to smell the scent of the sea, there are two charming hamlets, Groppo and Volastra, here the tradition for fish dishes is still strong. Volastra is at 300 metres above the sea level and develops on a round area that reminds ancient middle age walls, surrounded by wonderful olive groves.

Both villages are part of the municipality of Riomaggiore. Groppo is located halfway between Manarola and Volastra, both villages can be reached on foot through the ancient paths or using the daily regular shuttle bus service. La commune de Riomaggiore englobe les fractions : Manarola, (sur la mer - une des 5 Terre) Groppo et Volastra qui se trouvent à mi-colline à environ 300 mètres d’altitude. Groppo est composé de peu d’habitations qui ont vue sur la mer. Les terrains des alentours sont plantés d’olives et de vignes. Volastra qui se trouve au-dessus de Groppo est un ancien village collinaire à forme d'amphithéâtre, à moins d'un kilomètre de Manarola. Son nom dérive du latin Vicus oleaster - pays des oliviers. Destination idéale pour ceux qui recherchent la tranquillité et la détente, de là partent de nombreux sentiers de randonnée. Les navettes du Parc relient régulièrement toute la journée Manarola, Groppo et Volastra.

Manarola, protégé par une barrière naturelle de rochers qui tombent à pic à la mer est un village romantique. Pour ceux qui veulent se faire bronzer ou prendre un bain, ici la serviette s’étale sur les rochers. Le petit bourg est cintré par ses maisons-tours colorées. L'église paroissiale de la Nativité de la Vierge Marie est communément appelée église San Lorenzo, patron du village, célébré le 10 août. L’édifice date de 1338, comme l’indique la plaque du côté droit de la façade. Il s’agit d’une œuvre de style gothique ligure des maîtres Antelami. [à suivre]

Even if Corniglia is the only of the five villages that it's not by the sea, you can easily reach the coast, going down the hill on foot, follow the sign Corniglia-Vernazza (the cost of the path is 3 euros), or from the train station in Corniglia, through the tunnel of the former Genoa-La Spezia railway line, there is the famous nudist beach, a popular place since 1970s. While you're in Corniglia, you must absolutely visit the church of Saint Pietro, located inland, in the upper part of the village. If you need a break you can stop at Bar Terza Terra, overlooking the crystal blue waters, right next to the panoramic terrace of Santa Maria, you will find many excellent cocktails and Ligurian snacks at reasonable prices. Corniglia, fraction de la commune de Vernazza, magnifique petit village perché et écarté de l’affluence balnéaire. Néanmoins ses ruelles, ses petits jardins remplis de citrons jaunes, ses petites boutiques animent ce radieux petit bourg d’antan. Corniglia possède toutefois sa plage, très particulière, accessible par une ancienne voie ferrée devenue piétonne qui mène à une petite plage de galets "Guvano" où les naturistes l’on littéralement envahie. Légèrement décentrée par rapport au village, l'église San Pietro, exemple d’architecture gothique du XIVe siècle fut édifiée à partir d’une chapelle existante datant du XIe siècle. Le nucléo du bourg est garni de petits magasins, bars, auberges où il bon se restaurer ou siroter un cocktail par exemple au bar Terza Terra situé sur la magnifique petite place centrale et panoramique du bourg. Vernazza has a quiet marina, with a capacity of about 200 berths, right next to the church of Santa Margherita, it is also possible to lay your towel and adapt to the harpness of the place. The water here and on the rest of the coast is clear and clean. If you need a break for a snack, you can fill your stomach with yummy dishes and main courses with scampi, in all the restaurants or gastro pubs that you can find, and don't forget to climb up the terraces that lead to the castle, where you will be able to enjoy a priceless panorama.

The surroundings offer the opportunity to meet the winemakers of the priceless liqueur wine called "SciacchetrĂ ".

As long as you have a boat, you shouldn't miss a visit to the cave "Maemuna", the entrance is through the rocks from the cliff above it. Vernazza, ancien petit port de pêche pittoresque, aujourd’hui, sa crique peut contenir 200 places de petits bateaux.

L’église Santa Margherita ouvre ses fenêtres directement sur la mer, ce qui la rend très caractéristique. Talking about bathing, a perfect place is the wide beach Fegina, a typical beach with beach umbrellas and deck chairs, dominated by a sculpture made with concrete and iron in 1910, called the "Giant", located right in front of the train station, beyond the castle.

The ancient village developed on the cliffs, watched over by the remains of the stronghold. Enjoy a walk along the timeless promenade eating an ice cream, or carrying a map along the alleys full of souvenir shops. In June you can taste the famous anchovies, fried from early morning in the typical iron pan, shaped like a fish, at the well known and famous festival.

The close bond between man and nature, on a bigger scale, has enabled the develop naturopathic techniques and laboratories, wellness centres and resorts, wine and food trips to local cellars that are a sort of wonderful shops (Corniolo hill - Cantina Cinque Terre), inspired by the local colours.

Les Stations balnéaires de Bonassola, Monterosso et Levanto sont équipées de parasols et de chaises longues sur leur magnifique plage de sable fin. Par exemple les plages populaires de Fegina et de la Vieille Ville de Monterosso reçoivent de nombreux baigneurs des environs ou de passages.

Monterosso est divisé en deux parties, partie mare avec sa plage et le bourg antique. Cette dernière zone est dominée par les vestiges du fort et une sculpture en béton armé conduit à l’extrémité de plage, édifiée en 1910 par une famille renommée, ce buste est appelé « Il Gigante – Géant ». Les ruelles de Monterosso s’animent en particulier en juin lors de la fête aux Anchois, où dès le petit matin, anchois sont frits à la poêle en fer, typique des lieux.

En conclusion nous dirons que le contact étroit entre l'homme et la nature a cédé place à l'application, tant au niveau touristique qu'expérimental, à l'introduction de techniques et laboratoires de naturopathies, centres de bien-être, itinéraires enogastronomiques au sein des caves qui ne sont pas de simples chais mais boutiques aux merveilles où le vin des lieux, le "Sciacchetrà" et le Pesto sont rois.

De la colline du Corniolo, on rejoint la Cantina Cinque Terre – Cave des Cinque Terre), inspirées par les couleurs des environs. L’harmonie entre terre et mer, nature et homme, donne vie à un tourisme culturel et salvifique. La vocation du Parc des Cinque Terre est justement de développer un système éco-responsable qui réunit les vieilles et bonnes traditions d’antan avec les techniques modernes.

Event and Places of interest Let's talk about some of the most appreciated events that take place in the Cinque Terre.

Feasts and fairs date back to Middle Ages and even before, linked to the christian tradition and to its places of worship.

Halfway up the hills along Via dei Santuari, we find many churches and abbeys, the villages are connected to each other thanks to mule tracks, steps and easy paths.

It's time to mention the basilica of Saint Giovanni Battista, built in 1340, its facade has been rebuilt in neoGothic style, it is a solid and grey building located in the upper part of Riomaggiore; not far from here you can visit the house where the artist Telemaco Signorini, one of the members of the group Macchiaioli, stayed for a short period.

Another charming place worth to visit is the sanctuary of Montenero, surrounded by a lawn equipped with tables and benches for a short stop, the church was built in a perfect high position, it allows a magnificent panoramic view of Punta Mesco and Tino island.

You can reach it from the marina going up the hill, using the path called "the ring of Riomaggiore", or from another path that starts in Portovenere, and takes straight to the shade of the bell tower.

The saturday before Pentecost the inhabitants of the village organize a procession that leads to this sanctuary, former vows called "Gli ori di Montenero" are on display.

Evénements et Lieux d'intérêts La plupart des fêtes et commémorations célébrées sur les Cinque Terre sont d’origine médiévale, païenne ou chrétienne. D'un grand intérêt historique et naturaliste est la Via dei Santuari – la Voie des Sanctuaires, chemin à mi-côte qui unit les cinq édifices de culte bâtis sur les 5 Terres. Il s’agit un vieil itinéraire, emprunté autrefois par les pèlerins lors des anniversaires religieux. Ce parcours à faire à cheval, en vélo ou à pied, traverse des cultures en terrasses, des potagers, de vieilles fermes, des chemins muletiers, rampes d’escaliers, marches et de très petits bourgs souvent abandonnés. Tout le parcours offre aux marcheurs de magnifiques vues sur l’ensemble du territoire - parcours facile, à la portée de tous, fractionné en plusieurs étapes. D’Est en Ouest, voici quelques curiosités : de la partie haute de Riomaggiore, en la localité Lavaccio, part un sentier qui mène au sanctuaire de Montenero. L’édifice situé à 341 mètres d’altitude sur une colline offre une vue à 180°, de Punta Mesco aux îles du golfe de Portovenere (Palmaria, Tino, Tinetto). Un restaurant-bar où se ravitailler permet de passer une journée à l’air libre pour grands et petits dans un décor au vert. Plusieurs sentiers portent au sanctuaire : La Via dei Santuari» «l’Anello di Riomaggiore» selon le point de départ. La Tour Campanaria reste le repère à suivre. Le lundi de la Pentecôte, les fidèles de la paroisse participent à la procession pour après se réunir au sanctuaire, en l’occasion des plaquettes de vœux sont exposées, ces derniers sont dénommés "Gli ori di Montenero – Les Ors de Montenero". À Riomaggiore se dresse, grise et solidement tapie, la basilique San Giovanni Battista, construite en 1340 dont la façade a été modernisée en style néo-gothique. Tout près, se tient la maison où vécut le peintre et sculpteur Telemaco Signorini qui créa la toujours actuelle école Toscane Macchiaioli. [à suivre]

The austere church of Saint Lorenzo, located in Manarola, has a richly decorated interior, with baroque elements, apparently it was built by the Antelami masters. Every year, on 10th August the Saint is celebrated with a charming procession in the streets of the village, the statue of the Saint is then transferred from a sedan chair to a boat. Pride of the inhabitants of Manarola is the huge crib placed on the hill opposite the village, it is the biggest in the world, with more than 300 human size characters, lit with photovoltaic. The creator of this impressive work is Mr Mario Andreoli, a retired railway worker, who since the seventies has planned and dedicated his life to this masterpiece, it is usually lit every year on 8 December, and is visible to visitors until the end of January. À Manarola, le 10 août, chaque année, a lieu la fête patronale de San Lorenzo. En soirée, les porteurs de la statue du Saint rejoignent la procession qui chemine dans les ruelles du bourg jusqu’à la marina où, selon la tradition, la statue est embarquée sur un petit bateau de pêche. L’église construite alors par les maîtres Antelami est décorée de riches motifs baroques.

Manorala est désormais connue pour avoir sa plus grande crèche lumineuse au monde. Les 300 personnages, grandeur réelle, qui recouvrent l’entière colline des Tre Croci sont habillés de 15000 ampoules qui fonctionnent par un système photovoltaïque. Cette œuvre est de Mario Andreoli, employé des chemins de fer de nos jours en retraite, qui réalisa dans les années soixante-dix son rêve. La crèche est inaugurée chaque année autour du 8 décembre et illumine la colline tous les soirs jusqu’à la fin janvier.

In June there is the celebration of Saint Pietro in Corniglia, with a procession along the streets of the village, that starts from the parish church, built in Ligurian Gothic style, and continues up to the panoramic terrace of Santa Maria. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace, is located in the small village of San Bernardino, even if it is considered as part of Corniglia, it is in fact part of the village of Vernazza. It dates back to 1800, the church is also known as Saint Bernardino alla Foce, to remember when the saint passed here in 1485. From the square in front of the church, you can admire the wonderful countryside of Corniglia and the nudist beach Guvano. Our Lady of Health is located in Volastra, this is one of the five famous sanctuaries of the hamlets. There is evidence that the church already exhisted in 1240.

In Vernazza, the most important event is the festival in July for Santa Maria di Antiochia. You will be involved by the merry voices of worshippers in a magnificent procession, there are stalls placed in the main streets, especially for this event.

In the evening the best moment, a must of the whole event are the spectacular fire works. The church of Santa Maria di Antiochia was built in Romanesque style in the eleventh -twelth century along the coast, you can easily spot it thanks to its tall bell tower.

The Romanic sancturary Madonna Nera, is located in Reggio, inside you can admire a rare painting of the black vergin, the celebrations take place the first sunday, in august.

Belforte tower, the symbol of Vernazza, and the Doria castle are both located on the strip of land overlooking the sea, they were built to observe and defend the village and the coast.

They are both in good conditions, you can admire a magnificent view of the whole area, from the terraceoif the castle, the price of the ticket is only 1.50 euros.

We can't forget about the underwater Christmas nativity, a popolar event for the inhabitants in Vernazza: divers fetch the statue of child Jesus, that had been placed on the sea bottom, then a fervent procession, and the the statue is taken to the church, where the holy mass begins.

If you are in Monterosso during the celebrations of Saint Giovanni Battista, you will be impressed by the procession with all the torches lit, walk along the alleys, and then go to the beach to see the candles floating in the sea at night.

Another interesting procession is organized for the feast of Assumption that ends on the hills, in the square in front of the sanctuary of Soviore.

Early in the morning, on 14 and 15 August, the bells of the parish church ring to celebrate and attract worshippers.

The gothic church of Saint Giovanni is particulary interesting, it is located in the old part of the town, not far from the sea; the convent of Capuchin Friars and the church of Saint Francesco, are located on the top of the hill of Saint Cristoforo, they separate the old part of the village from the new part.

The most important sanctuary, one of the oldest in Italy, and perhaps the oldest in Liguria, is the one devoted to the Virgin Mother of Soviore, we find evidence of the existance of the sanctuary in a document dated 1255, the building is located behind Monterosso, where the Lemon Fair is held every year on the third sunday in May, this fair is dedicated to this typical fruit and its culinary products.

Finally, why not try a boat tour in the Gulf of Poets, exploring the protected marine area of the Cinque Terre, then reach the iron colour rocks, where Portovere is hidden, or why not try a night tour in the bays of La Spezia, looking at the stars and moving towards Tuscany, for a beer in Camaiore, tourists would never imagine the positive benefits of such remarkable itineraries and experiences.

À Corniglia, le 29 juin, fête populaire et patronale de San Pietro, pour l'occasion, la tradition veut que chaque famille prépare une tarte de riz salée et les prémices du potager à la façon ligurienne.

De l’église paroissiale de style gothique ligurien, vers 21h00 une procession se forme et serpente au travers des ruelles du village.

Les participants, un cierge à la main, arrivent au Belvédère Santa Maria sur la Piazza del Taragio. Là, commence la distribution du gâteau de riz Fieschi accompagné d'un bon verre de blanc des Cinque Terre.

Le Sanctuaire Notre-Dame delle Grazie, situé à San Bernardino, construit au début du XIXe siècle, se trouve à une heure environ de marche de Corniglia. Connu aussi sous le nom de San Bernardino alla Foce, en mémoire du passage du Saint en 1485. De la place de l'église, une magnifique vue s’ouvre sur la campagne avec pour fond la mer et la plage de Guvano.

Le plus important événement de Vernazza, en juillet, c’est la fête patronale de Santa Maria di Antiochia. En l’occasion, messe, procession religieuse, stands étalés le long des rues principales animent les lieux. En soirée, les feux d’artifices clouent la fête.

L'église Santa Maria di Antiochia, de style roman du XIe – XIIe siècle fut construite pratiquement les pieds dans l’eau, son clocher sert de point de repère pour les gens de la mer.

Le château des Doria et sa Tour Belforte, symbole de Vernazza, ont été construits sur la jetée rocheuse pour défendre la ville et contrôler les invasions des sarrasins venant de la mer. Les deux constructions qui sont en bon état permettent d’accéder à la terrasse du château où une magnifique vue s’ouvre aux yeux du visiteur.

La naissance de l’enfant Jésus est parfois célébrée sur les rives dans un original décor marin. Représentation particulière et inattendue ! Vernazza en est un exemple, les plongeurs remontent et émergent des vagues avec une statue de l’enfant Jésus. Le nouveau-né, réchauffé et vêtu est accompagné en procession jusqu'à l'église où la messe de Noël est célébrée. Vernazza est au centre d'un réseau pédestre qui relie les villes côtières des Cinque Terre. Le Sanctuaire de la Madonna di Reggio, construit au XIe siècle sur les ruines d'un ancien édifice de culte près de la crête, se trouve à moins d'une heure de marche du bourg sur un ancien chemin intercalé des stations de la Via Crucis – le Chemin de Croix. L’église des lieux conserve l’image d’une vierge noire qui est célébrée le premier dimanche d'août. À Soviore, les 14 et 15 août en l’occasion de l'Assomption, dès les premières heures du matin après la sonnerie des cloches, une procession s’aligne sur la place du sanctuaire situé à mi-colline.

Le sanctuaire de la Madonna de Soviore, édifié près de son agglomération fut mentionné pour la première fois dans un document de 1255. Il est l’un des plus anciens d'Italie et sûrement le plus ancien de la Ligurie. À Monterosso, le troisième dimanche de mai a lieu la Sagra del Limone – la Fête des Citrons. En l’occasion dégustations de tous les produits dérivés du citron sont exposés et présentés. En juin, deux jours de fête pour célébrer San Giovanni Battista, patron de la ville. Dès la veille, la parade s’ouvre par un feu de joie qui est alimenté par des vieilleries ramassées par les enfants durant les mois qui précèdent l’évènement. La fête San Giovanni, appelée aussi nuit de Saint Jean est d’origine païenne en relation aux solstices. L’église San Giovanni Battista est un bâtiment d'un grand intérêt architectural du XIIIe siècle. La colline San Cristoforo qui sépare les deux parties de Monteresso héberge un magnifique couvent des frères Capucins dont l’église est consacrée à Saint François. A ne pas manquer sur la Riviera du levant - la mini-croisière qui contourne le golfe des poètes et ses treize bourgs marins - l’église de Portovenere agrippée sur la roche noir et ses maisons-tours multicolores qui longent la jetée - la baie où la ville de La Spezia reste animée jour et nuit.
