Among Legends

Expo Celebrates Decades of Supreme Champions BY CASSIE OLSON Staff writer

For breeders, exhibitors and visitors alike, the feeling one gets on the Saturday of World Dairy Expo is unlike any other. The Grand Champions have been named, the stage has been set and the crowd falls silent as the lights cut and the spotlight falls. It is time to name the Supreme Champion of World Dairy Expo. The title of Supreme Champion is one that every breeder, owner and exhibitor dreams of. These winning cattle, however, have changed and evolved just as much as Expo itself. No stranger to Expo or the Showring, Ernie Kueffner has seen this change firsthand since taking home the title with the Jersey, Waymer Patrick Nadine, in 1996. “In the spring of 1996, I heard about Nadine after she won the Ohio Spring Show. I went to look at her and fell in love with the cow. I purchased her and was fortunate enough for her to be named Supreme that year,” Kueffner said. A cow not to be forgotten, Nadine is a timeless

legend to the Jersey breed. However, Kueffner said as breeds have developed, it’s a whole new playing field for dairy breeders. “There is an extreme difference now; when I look at the picture on my desk of us with Nadine when she won 20 years ago, she was such a beautiful cow that now wouldn’t

be nearly as competitive,” Kueffner said. Jim Ostrom, co-owner of Milk Source, LLC. and 2015 Supreme Champion, Lovhill Goldwyn Katrysha, agreed that the top cows have continued to develop over time. “There was a period of time when large cows with great udders were what we

looked for,” Ostrom said. “In recent years, as I have seen it, is that it’s not necessarily the biggest cow; it’s the most complete, highest quality cow that wins it all.” For Kueffner, what makes an Expo-winning Turn to SUPREME CHAMPIONS | Page 6
