Introducing Miss Madison!
Expo presents special gift to Alliant Energy Center BY BRITTANY OLSON Staff writer
1967 marks the beginning of a 50-year friendship between World Dairy Expo and the Alliant Energy Center. Back then directors gifted the Alliant Energy Center – then known as the Dane County Exposition Center – with a now-iconic present. “Everyone knows about the globe,” said WDE dairy cattle coordinator Laurie Breuch. “Directors gave the globe to the Dane County Exposition Center as a gift when the first show was held on BRITTANY OLSON their grounds.” While many things have Laurie Breuch, World Dairy Expo dairy cattle show coordinator, begins to pull back the curtain changed since the first World concealing the surprise gift, a cow named Miss Madison. A throwback to an iconic trophy
WDE awards Grand Champions with near-replica of former Allen Hetts Memorial Trophies BY KRISTA KUZMA Staff writer
Shirley Barlass still clearly remembers the trophy her family’s farm won when they exhibited the Grand Champion Jersey for the first time at World Dairy Expo, in 1968. “It was almost as tall as I was, and I’m 5’2”,” Shirley said, who was at the halter of the cow and stood next to the trophy for a formal picture. The trophy, later named the Allen Hetts Memorial Trophies, became an iconic symbol for World Dairy Expo, easily distinguishing those who had exhibited the Grand Champion of a breed during the international event. Although the name of the award is still the same today, breed champions of recent years have received a different form of the trophy, an etched crystal globe mounted atop an engraved cherry base.
