Colored Shavings: A World Dairy Expo "Trademark"

Annual event uses about 220 cubic yards BY RON JOHNSON Staff writer

MADISON, Wis. - All that glitters is not gold, but this year’s Showring shavings certainly are, complete with gold glitter. It’s the 50th year for the world-renowned event, so gold wood shavings and glitter were chosen, according to Ann Marie Magnochi, World Dairy Expo Dairy Cattle Show Manager. Decorating the ring in the Coliseum with colored shavings is a World Dairy Expo tradition that dates back to 1984, Magnochi said. Past colors include purple, blue, red and more; using shavings dyed gold is a first. Getting the shavings dyed is an extra cost. “But it’s worth it,” Magnochi said. “It’s that unique touch that makes Expo special.” This is the 16th year American Wood Fibers is supplying the shavings used at World Dairy Expo. They come from the company’s facility at Schofield, Wis., said

nual assignment of selecting the color that is just right. Magnochi said they try to match colors used in the Showring display or from the theme art from that year. For example, they might want to coordinate with colors in an Expo poster. Picking the

The right fit

Since 2010, the Youth Fitting Contest has encouraged dairy youth to put their skills to the test in preparing animals for show. This September, World Dairy Expo announced changes to the 2016 Youth Fitting Contest that were made to increase participation in the contest. After adding an Intermediate Division and separate Male and Female divisions, 22 youth in four separate categories participated in the contest which took place on Sunday, October 2 in the Estrumate Sale Pavilion. The top participants in the contest included: Intermediate Female, Melissa Sprecher of

right color is not always easy. “For ‘Designer Dairy’, the 2014 theme, we went with red shavings. We wanted to mimic a red carpet, so we wanted a rich, vibrant red,” Magnochi explained. Turn to SHAVINGS | Page 2

Sauk City, Wis.; Intermediate Male, Grant Fremstad of Westby, Wis.; Senior Female, Elizabeth Acel of Guys Mills, Penn.; and Senior Male, Levi Banowetz of Charlotte, Iowa. Acel said splitting up the divisions was a worthwhile decision. “I want more people to take the opportunity to compete in this contest,” Acel said. “It goes to show that women can fit, too; it’s not only a man’s game.” In order to compete, participants must provide an animal to fit. The animal does not have to be owned by the participant, but must have the permission of its owner before the contest begins. Contestants are allowed to clip the animal’s head and legs prior to the competition and are given 60 minutes to fit their animal to show ready using their own equipment. Acel returned in 2016 after a tenth place finish in the 2015 Turn to FITTING | Page 3
